Lesson learned: Don't cheap out on the coffees! I usually go to Summer Moon, but it's a bit pricey. Today I was feeling adventurous and Austin Java made me deeply regret it. First I tried the dirty chai breve. TBH I knew when the barista asked if I mind whole milk that I was in trouble. The insanely hot liquid trash I received tasted like neither chai, nor coffee despite supposedly having 2 shots. Once it was cool enough to drink (about 30min later) I decided swing back by to maybe get something worthwhile. I mentioned it was too sweet and suggested that they just comp a cold brew so I could balance it out. Maybe I should have asked for a couple shots instead, but I was trying to keep it simple. Much to my dismay, the server snatched up that chai and dumped it down the drain (with somewhat of a no-soup-for-you vibe). They then drew me a cold brew so weak that I'm pretty sure there was more caffeine left in my bladder from yesterday's Summer Moon than in that cup. Hopefully something decent goes in this location soon, otherwise it seems like a real waste of real estate. read more

When they get it right, the food is great. I don't review service (unless it's a high end "old school" restaurant - let's face it; service in Austin will almost always subpar compared to most other cities). I initially gave this location some slack when ti was new but it's pretty obvious the problems are deeper than that. First, I highly caution against on-line ordering. These orders are bottom of the priority list and even allowing them more than the 20 minutes they state online, your order will often not be ready. This leads to the staff having to rush your order because now your sitting at the take out window waiting, which leads to mistakes. Apparently management really isn't interested in feedback of any kind as their website offers to contact options other than to discuss catering or ordering bulk coffee. Their Facebook page has multiple negative reviews but most have generic (or no) responses from AJ management. So in the end AJ is like many other Austin eateries. The population is overly tolerant of poor service but because it's pervasive across the city, you either live with it or eat at home. read more

First time having breakfast here. Chicken and waffles with cinnamon butter was tasty. Cold brew was good, but had to ask for creamer twice. Service wasn't too attentive, didn't check if anyone needed drink refills or anything else. Friends had standard breakfast and eggs benedict. Loved the Austin Java on Barton Springs so was psyched when this location opened up. Unfortunately, my experience was less than stellar. Parking wasn't terrible even on a busy Saturday as there is another lot next door. It was busy so we had to wait at least 20 minutes and the only place to wait is in the parking lot or a few plastic chairs in a circle inside. We split the wait 1/2 outside and 1/2 inside but the AC blew directly on us while we waited inside even though it was not hot outside. I was a little disappointed in the cold atmosphere since the BS location was more cozy. Our waiter was very nice but the food took awhile and when it came my pancakes were so cold the cold butter would not spread. I tried to power through them since we had waited so long already and I didn't want my daughter to eat alone by they were also hard. I finally told the waiter and he assured me that they could rush a new order but when it came out they were not much better. Just got back from Charleston so I guess my expectations were still high. After I was led to my table I waited for ten minutes before I was asked for anything to drink, while the two tables near me that had sat after me had their drinks and were placing orders. I stood up and spoke with the manager. I was helped immediately, even given the avocado toast on the house which was a nice gesture. My review is based off the food alone, which was the brisket Benedict. Dish looked stunning and was plated perfectly. My issue is that you are selling brisket in Austin. You can not, I repeat CAN NOT pass off mediocre brisket here. Rubbery sole of a shoe comes to mind, and I hate to beat this meal down but by far the worst brisket I have had in my life. If you've never been to Austin Java you might think it's a coffee shop but it's actually more of a restaurant that also has an espresso machine. I wouldn't say they have the best brewed coffee but their light roast AKA "Morning Glory" is pretty good. I enjoy the Californian omelet (no onions) and I like to ask for extra salsa because their salsa is very very good but not much comes with it by default. The staff is friendly but may sometimes be overbooked ... in these cases a visit seems to take much longer than it should. Other than that, it's pretty nice! read more

My daughter and I stopped in for a quick bite in the early afternoon. We ordered quesadillas and the hummus plate. The quesadillas were good (kind of hard to go wrong, right?). But the hummus looked like a scoop of wet concrete--same consistency and color. And I've never tasted concrete but I imagine it might taste like this hummus? What happened to this place? The first time we took the kids (kids eat free with adult entree on Wednesdays) Lance was our server. He was so attentive, even my kids noticed! I have been here about 4-5 times since they opened, The good-the coffee is really good. They have this cold whiskey which is great! The bad-the sauces. They need to take some training in sauce cooking. The two I had were terrible. The Hollandaise tasted like a Lemon Creme Pie had been blended and poured on top the Brisket! It was waaay too sweet, dreadful. The classic Lox and Bagel should be left alone. The weird dill cream cheese was heavy handed and too strong a taste. It overwhelmed the delicate salmon. I like the decor but my other 2 family members hate it. I tried going there solo to hang out and sit on the couches but they were low, too deep and uncomfortable. The new Austin Java location is great. For those who have been to other AJ locations may be surprised by the table service and needing to be seated. It has more of a restaurant vibe than a coffee shop but it still holds on to the original Austin Java feel. The staff is friendly and the service is fast. I was greeted by a friendly staff member and shown to a table the moment I walked in. I ordered a Toffee Crunch frappe and it was delicious. We thought this place was related to cafe java on Metric Blvd but after eating here I can confirm it is not. The Staff was very nice but the food was not every good. The potatoes had zero flavor and the pancakes were not as good as they looked (but I will admit the cinnamon butter was tasty.) Also, you can get twice the food for a lot less at Cafe Java on Metric and it's more of a homey vibe and food has never been a problem. read more

Great food... SHITE service. Completely abominable. The brunette girls at the counter have always given me attitude no matter how many times I've walked in. I can understand one time with bad service as anybody can have a bad day but the fact that me and my friends have walked into this establishment many times and still have been treated poorly reflect upon the staff. Today when I walked in I was meeting a friend and waved to her upon her arrival and coincidentally the cashier at the counter had her friends coming in right behind her (My friend). She (The cashier) waved and greeted her friends and then turned to me with a stone cold stare, asking if I was ready to order. I disregard her behavior and order politely. Came here to get some coffee between classes. I decided to try the honey nut latte with sugar-free hazelnut and almond milk. Y'all this coffee is giving me life! It's so good! I never would have thought to put honey in coffee but it's delicious. The guy who made it was also very nice. Been here MANY times with my family, never had a bad experience, till today. We arrived and were seated, 10 minutes into being seated we got water from a sever. No drink order or anything was taken she just gave us water and walked away. We sat for another 20 minutes and finally decided to leave. There were two other waitresses in the back talking, my family and I saw them. We waited a total of 30 minutes or more and no order was taken, not even drinks. This location has the friendliest employees that I had to write a review (which I NEVER do). Every Saturday and Sunday morning I go through the drive-thru and order a Cafe Au Lait, and I always bring my dogs with me. The lady and the guy with the tattoos (sorry I can't remember your names!) who work the window on the weekends are super nice, friendly, and always give bacon to my dogs. She is actually working the drive through simultaneously as well. However much she is getting paid to run this restaurant, it's not enough. I understand it's a team effort and the food was flying out of the kitchen, the kitchen staff was killing it too. How is it you only have one of her working though? On a Sunday? Java - Your restaurant has got to be doing well, I just paid $20 bucks for a reg coffee and a smoked salmon bagel. The place is packed every time I come in. Your food and coffee is delicious! I ordered a Carmel macchiato and I could hear them as there were making my drink say, "how do you make one" and the lady who took my order said "oh it's just like a carm latte, she should have just ordered that because it's the same thing" then after waiting at the window for 7 minutes they gave me a hot Carmel drink, I ordered it iced. They came back 5 minutes later with an iced drink. The milk and coffee was not depressed like a carm macchiato should be and they didn't put actual Carmel in, just the syrup flavor. I am so happy that this Austin Java opened in the neighborhood! I stopped by recently for dinner with a gf, and I got a fantastic burger with goat cheese and tomato jam (I think it was the Lady Bird) for less than $10!!! The servers are always polite and offer customer service. I recommend for dinner, brunch or simply grabbing a coffee while working remotely.
