Proves the saying you can't pay someone to care about their job. I looked at the glasses on the adjacent table to my right. Same. I looked at the glasses on the table to my left. Same. "We don't wear gloves when we set the table, they're just fingerprints." No, they were covered in muck from whatever was on the person's hands (who was too lazy to wash them) when they set the table. Stopped into Avenue Kitchen a little while back and I am happy to say that our experience was nothing like some of the more negative reviews I have read, in fact, it was a downright splendid experience in a bright, upbeat space, with perfect outdoor dining and a wonderful staff. We were greeted immediately after stepping inside and asked if we wanted to be seated inside or enjoy the beautiful weather that day. Usually, I will choose to sit inside, just to avoid any baking sun or exhaust from passing cars, but something that day spurred me to sit out front, and boy did it help make the whole experience! The patio out front is spacious, comfortable, and even quiet and somewhat private despite being right up against the shopping center parking and right next to a neighboring restaurant. Our server was absolutely outstanding; she was the only thing standing between the small issue I experienced when ordering! They didn't have bagels and I couldn't order my initial menu choice, and although I was slightly annoyed, she smoothed this over impeccably and helped me ease into several of the other choices that I had wanted as well, so it was actually a win. The menu isn't "extensive" but the choices that are there are unique and wonderful, and many of them have interesting twists and takes on other dishes from the past as well as creations you may never expect. I decided ultimately to go with a Brûléed Grapefruit, which was a half a grapefruit with sugar poured overtop and then caramelized into a perfect glasslike sweet crust that was an experience unlike I have ever had before with any fruit. This alone would keep be coming back again to try it over and over. In addition, I also tried the avocado toast that was loaded with perfectly fresh avocado and so many other things that created a wonderful balance of fresh vegetal flavors and smooth buttery umami that makes this modern classic so popular. This was just another highlight of their menu, at least for me. This is a wonderful woman-owned and operated space that is worth checking out if you are ever in the area and should be a repeat staple for those of you who live nearby. If I was just a bit closer, I'd be coming every Friday or Saturday morning for just the grapefruit alone, not to mention the rest of the menu to explore. read more

We used to frequent here years ago when we lived here and was one of our favorite spots. We are traveling and decided to go back for breakfast. First the positives, the service was good and the atmosphere is nice. I ordered the Latke which was over cooked so much the outside was hard. My wife had a waffle and bacon. The waffle was good. I also had an order of bacon. So for $7 you get 3 pieces of thin sliced smoked bacon that comes out tasting like it has been under a heat lamp for hours. They were nice when we sent it back and they removed it from the bill. Seriously though for that price is should be regular cut bacon and cooked fresh to order. Very disappointed. The inside of this restaurant is cute and luxurious. I remarked to my fiancé that it feels like Christmas in the best of ways. Definitely a cute place to take someone for lunch or dinner if they're visiting the area. While in town for a wedding, we stopped in for lunch and we're pleasantly surprised by the menu. Check In was smooth and I server Matt was excellent! Avenue kitchen restaurant has very nice ambience for a restaurant located in a strip mall. When you approach the restaurant there is nice outside seating that most likely existed prior to COVID. Inside is very stylish a modern open concept with 'exposed' beams etc. The bar is a statement piece large, bright and neat. Overall inside has the look of a large semi expensive condo in a major city. Major upside? plenty of parking! All of the breakfast/brunch menu items are interesting. Using Yelp to view the food was extremely helpful. I went with the Creme Brûlée waffle and loved it. It wasn't extremely sweet it was delivered with a nice golden brown caramelized sugar top with fruit and mint garnish. The firm waffle worked well with the custard topping and fruit. A little too much custard topping for me but I moved the 'extra' to the side. Hubby enjoyed his steak, potatoes and eggs. The steak was cooked as requested and tender. He love the bacon bloody Mary so much he did it twice. My St. Germain spritzer was good not special. As usual the La colombe coffee as usual was strong but good. Wow, first time here. Lovely decorations and nice bar! They are only open for breakfast and lunch right now. The place was not busy when we got there but filled up quickly! Then we realized this poor server was on her own. She kept up with orders, seating people, delivery food and bills. She did it with a smile on her face. The food was great! She was greeting, seating, waiting tables, bartending, clearing and setting tables. If I'm paying $16 for a grilled cheese and $12 for my Maple Rye Smash, I want more people waiting on me. Had a nice A-OK dinner here with girlfriends a few weeks ago. The food was pretty good- we ordered a lot of different apps and entrees to share! Pizza was okay but a little lacking in toppings, farro salad was very good. Short rib grilled cheese could have had a little more cheese but the fries it was served with were good! Baked goat cheese was very interesting and I think worth the split between a group. We love the chips and buttermilk dip it's a favorite. As an aside, I think it would go well with fried pickles LOL. Cocktail selection was impressive and it was nice to have a glass of wine with dinner. I think the ambiance was just okay for an evening meal. It was very bright inside and we were a little cold. This was our fourth visit to Avenue. The food and service is always very good, however today we had a strange experience. Our bill was $40 and change . My husband had a $100 dollar bill for payment . The waitress said she didn't think they could make change for that amount . Mind you it was after 11:00 and they had been open for a few hours. My husband said he would use his debit card, however he was not paying the three percent charge. The next thing we know the waitress says they can make the change . She gave my husband his change and said "they usually do not accept large bills." I find it odd that a business will not accept $100 bills, especially a restaurant . My husband took me here for a early Friday lunch. I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is quaint and luxury. They have a full bar. The restaurant was beautiful. All cream with neutral Decor. The only thing that I did not like was the white Christmas trees LOL. But the restaurant made a great backdrop for my Instagram post. I ordered the chicken and waffle. The chicken was delicious. The cider donuts were soft and delicious. I did not care for the dipping sauce. However the sauce was not needed. My husband got the French toast that was actually very good. The potatoes had a better on it that was interesting I don't think I need it on my potatoes moving forward. One big downfall is that they did not have any breakfast meat besides pork. Most Philadelphians don't eat pork. The chicken with my chicken and waffle was the best part of my meal. Even better than the Donuts. To eat, we ordered the fig & prosciutto flatbread, the chicken sandwich & the prosciutto sandwich. All were delicious! The fig pizza was my favorite. This place was all I heard it was. Lets start with the coffee. Its from La Colombe coffee roasters so I assumed it was good.... delicious as always. Smooth, bold, and absolutely no bitterness. I gad the latke with a fried egg for my breakfast with a side of fruit and one pancake. The latke was flavorful with crispy edges, the perfect mate to my over easy egg. The pancake... This was the best pancake I've had outside of Gilchrest in Atlantic City. Thin with slightly crisp edges. Just how I like them. Enough flavor and sweetness that syrup wasn't even necessary. We went on the Monday after Thanksgiving for mid-day brunch. Being a Monday, it was not crowded when we arrived and so we had our choice of seating. Our server was extremely nice and personable, as was the other waitstaff that interacted with us during the meal. For drinks, we ordered the apple cider mule; it was delicious. For food, we ordered the creme brulee waffles and a bacon cheeseburger. The creme brulee waffles were a little too soggy from the glaze, but I was able to navigate through and somewhat enjoy it. As for the bacon cheeseburger, no complaints; it was a decently-sized patty cooked perfectly, with crisp bacon and a soft bun with fresh lettuce and tomato. Everything (drinks, food, service) is offered at an above-average rate, so the price can get steep depending on the order. We were in the area Saturday and decided to try Avenue Kitchen for the first time for a late breakfast. We checked them out on Yelp and they had some interesting items. It was a beautiful morning so we decided to sit outside. The young lady that showed us to our table did inform us they were really busy and short staffed. No problem I understand, we are in no rush. Our waitress came to our table with water and glasses. The water came in a wine shaped bottle which we thought was nice. She took our drink and food order. I got an ice tea and the short rib eggs Benedict, hubby got a black coffee with cream and the caramel apple French toast. It took about 30 minutes for our food to come out but no drinks. Our waitress said I'll be right out with your drinks. We start eating and our food was lukewarm. She finally brought the drinks out at the end of our meal. She forgot the cream for the coffee which took about another 5-6 minutes. No big deal we had water to drink although I think the drinks should have been removed from our bill. Hubby really liked his French toast. I have mixed reviews about the short ribs Benedict. The eggs were cooked perfectly and there was a lot of short rib meat. However, the hollandaise sauce had absolutely no flavor very bland and the potatoes had no seasoning. Over all not a bad experience. Waitress did give us another tables bill but was corrected. Food wasn't bad mine needed seasoning. Took most of mine home added a little salt and pepper which helped a lot. I think if they weren't so busy it may have been a better experience. read more

I hoped they were preparing lunch.. that menu looked more exciting than the breakfast menu, but it was still breakfast. So my mother and I ordered the omelette with multigrain toast. My omelette had ham and cheese, while she had ham, cheese, and veggies. It also came with potatoes. It was just ok. There was obviously a lack of seasoning on everything. Aside from the crunchy exterior, the potatoes were very dull. There was jelly that I suspected were made with beets and they provided no flavor. When I spread it on the toast, the only thing I could taste was the butter that was on the toast when it came to our table. My mom also said the omelette could've used more cheese. Service was average. The first time I had to ask the server several times for refills on my drink. The second time, we ordered an appetizer to split. When it came I asked the waitress for plates since we were sharing. She seemed like this was an out of the box ask, and came back with one. So, my friend ate off the main plate and I had the little one. Food was ok. First time there we shared a friend chicken sandwich (overcooked and hard) and tacos (delicious). The fries were a strange consistency and weren't hot. Second time was the shared truffle fries, a salad, and a BLT. Good but not spectacular. Price point is above average, which would be ok if the food was great and service was better. This place has a nice clean line to it when I walked in. It took a while to see my server, Kyra, but she was nice and helpful in selecting between two appetizer dishes. The mimosa took a while to come and she was very apologetic; however, I noticed that I was the only table without water and it remained that way my entire dining experience. I enjoyed the crispness of the bacon on my stuffed dates. It was the right blend of sweet and salty with the dates. The sea scallops were broiled just right and I enjoyed them with the risotto that had just a hint of butter and salt.
