I've heard of this spot quite a few times as an alternative to Wah Fung, so I really wanted to give it a try. Located nearby Wah Fung, New Kim Tuong offers seating inside (note: you do have to pay an additional fee for this) and often times, there's little to no line. They have the same offerings as Wah Fung, and probably a larger menu. I got their 2 meat platter for $9.50 but because we wanted to dine-in, it was $10.50. The portion was a lot bigger than Wah Fung and they gave more rice, meats, and bean sprout veggies (opposed to cabbage). While the meat was flavorful, I felt that it was a bit on the drier side than other spots I've been to. Not bad if you're looking for a seat to eat or bigger portions, but there are better delis/meat shops in Chinatown.

char siu and roast duck over rice

Why wait in line at Wah Fung No.1 for char siu when you can get EVEN BETTER char siu right next door with NO LINE!? New Kim Tuong might be one of the most underrated cantonese roast meat spots in NYC. It's a no-frills, quick casual shop with some indoor seating. What surprised me most was that the char siu was piping hot when they handed it over. Steam rushed out of the takeout box when I opened the lid! Only $12/lb is easily one of the best deals you'll find in Chinatown. The char siu was thick-cut, super juicy, and tender, with the perfect half-fat, half-lean balance (半肥瘦). It even had a malt sugar glaze and caramelized, charred edges. My mom ordered the two BBQ meats over rice for just $9, and the portion was generous. The char siu and roast duck completely covered the rice, with a solid serving of pickled cabbage on the side. Honestly a great bang for your buck. ***CASH ONLY

Just tried this for the first time to avoid the crazy line at Wah Fung, and it's a solid alternative for those who are in a rush. I ordered the C5 Combo where you get to pick 3 BBQ meats over white rice for $10.50. I went with the roast duck, pork belly, and char siu. All the meats came out hot and fresh, and the cabbage served with it tastes great with their sauce. It might just be your meat choices thrown on top of rice with no fancy presentation, but it really hits that comfort food craving. You get a lot of food, easily enough for two meals or something to share, which makes it really worth it. The ambiance is pretty no-frills, but the authenticity speaks for itself when you see Chinatown locals coming in and ordering whole ducks. Overall, the food quality is good and tastes right for the price, just not something I'd overhype. But with the value and convenience, it earns that extra star for a solid 4.

We heard a lot about this place serving affordable BBQ over rice without the long wait like Wah Fung, so of course after trying Wah Fung, we wanted to check this spot out too. We went on a random Tuesday around 3PM -- no wait at all, just walked in and ordered. I noticed the menu had Vietnamese on it, so I tried speaking Vietnamese to the butcher, but he didn't understand. After hearing the staff talk to each other, I realized none of them were Vietnamese. Just something I found interesting. We originally wanted two meats over rice, but they were out of pork and only had duck left, so we went with duck. It's cash only. We ate there since they have tables and seating, and they provide Sriracha and other condiments on the table. Looking at the menu, they actually offer a lot more than just BBQ -- there are other Chinese dishes as well. The first bite came with high expectations because we were hungry, but honestly, it was disappointing. The rice was too wet and overcooked, the vegetables were bland with no seasoning, and the duck was just okay. Only a few pieces had solid meat -- most were small pieces with bones. We were so disappointed we couldn't even finish it. We just ate some of the meat and left the rest. To be honest, $7 for one meat over rice is actually more expensive than Wah Fung, and the portion wasn't very filling. The only plus is that they have seating available. I guess we still haven't found our go-to Chinese BBQ spot yet -- maybe we'll have better luck in Chinatown.

You might be influenced by a social media reel to come here bc there's no line like at wah fung and it's also affordable Chinese bbq. There's a reason there's no line. We got bbq pork, roast pork, and roast Duck combo over rice. Terribly dry. Only positive note is the crispy skin on the roast pork and duck. No issues with service.

Char Siu Roast Pork over Rice

Their name on the awning, 金祥飯店 means Golden Auspicious Rice Shoppe, a big name for a little hole-in-the-wall shop here on Chrystie St. My sister swears by this place for their roasted meats that are top notch in Chinatown. I grew up in the neighborhood eating char siu (roast pork) from just about all the restaurants and markets within a mile radius because my mom knew I loved it. New Kim Tuong is definitely in my top 3 places for Cantonese roasted meats. Char siu is probably the most popular, as it can been seen hanging in many Chinatown restaurant windows, easily recognizable as strips of boneless pork loin, glistening in sweet red sauce. Whether you get the roast pork, whole roast pig, roast duck, soy sauce chicken, BBQ ribs, spatchcocked duck or BBQ chicken wings, you can't go wrong. And if you are lucky enough to get them straight out of the oven, it's phenomenal! They will even take special orders if you want a whole roast suckling pig or roast turkey for special occasions, which we've done for birthdays and Thanksgiving. Make sure you place the order at least a week in advance. Though the roasted meats are front and center, the kitchen also does dishes, stir-fried from the wok or in soup. You can even combine roast meats in noodle soup with wontons and different types of rice or egg noodles, thin and wide. I like to get a good beef chow fun or a spicy Singapore rice noodle once in a while or even an order of Peking pork chops! So if you don't want to wait in that ridiculously long line a few doors down (looking at you, Wah Fung and all your internet followers) for mediocre char siu, just walk a few steps to New Kim Tuong for some eye-opening taste.

Three meats over rice. Came with cabbage. Highly recommend
    Rose N.

I ordered the three meats over rice. Ordered the char siu, roasted duck and chicken. Omg it was amazing. I took a bus and a 25 min walk and I would do it again. I only had half the meat and 10% of the rice and cabbage. This is THE BEST. I saw two ordered of whole roasted pig get picked up while I was here. Idk how they operate with such a low cost. It was ~$10-12. I ate there. Couldn't finish it and they gave me a bag. I mean, that's so nice of them. I took it come and forgot about it (nap). My husband ate it and said wow it's really good. Best thing he's eaten in nyc besides a Michelin star place for yakitori. The duck was succulent, yummy skin. The chicken omg (steamed?) was covered in a lemongrass salve, and the char siu. Wow that is a good lean char siu. Amazing!

Couldn't help myself and stole a piece of pork before I took the picture! Well worth it!! The meat is so tender and flavorful and for 8.50 for both duck and pork this was a great deal. Located right next to Wah fung without the line and great flavor- definitely come check this place out. Service was quick and friendly and definitely worth the support

Choice of 2 Proteins with White Rice
    Vivian N.

2 protein of choice: Char Siu (middle) & Duck (right) with white rice. This was delicious especially in the cold weather. Everything was fresh. The duck was the winner between the two proteins. Juicy and tender. Flavor profile was the perfect amount of sweet and savory. The char siu was dry. Staff are quick so if you're in a hurry this is the spot. $8.50 for all of this. For inside seating it was additional $1/person, but there's a park right across the street if you want to enjoy nature!

Like many, used to be a fan of Wah Fung No 1 before it turned viral. Today we passed by it and saw the line was 23 people strong. We immediately recalled seeing a Tik Tok post saying the BBQ a few doors down has the same thing but without the line. We decided to give it a shot. First, I'm not amused by the inconsistency of the restaurant name. The signage on the awning says "New Kim Tuong", the Chinese says "Jin Shang", and the menu says "Kien Tuong". I had to look up Google and Yelp to see what it is referred to by the populace. Not cool. Not sure if this is a full service restaurant as there are a few small tables inside, with menus, but most people ordered to go. We ordered the first item on the cover of their take-out menu, 1 BBQ meat over rice. We picked pork. $7 vs $8 at Wah Fung. I would say the portion is slightly less. The pork wasn't as moist or tasty. So if you bail out of Wah Fung, you can get a quick substitute here. But personally, if time permit, I'd go to Hey Hey Roasted on Mott Street instead.

Better char siu pork than wah fung and there's no long line. Cash only. The entire paper menu is in Vietnamese but none of the workers speak Vietnamese.

    Roast pork
    M T.

Stopped in and got a roast pork with veggies and rice for $8. This place is just as good as wah fung but instead of waiting 30 minutes in line, you walk right in and out. Silly tourists don't know what's good for them.

    Elaine T.

This place is right next to a restaurant that always has a really long line. When I went, there was no line. I got this char siu rice for $8 and it was fresh and really good. No need to wait in line for the other stores when this one has similar meals for a similar cheap price! The meat portion was great and there is cabbage also. Note that the entire menu on the wall is in chinese (the paper menu has english) but you can probably also just show the chef an image of what you want. There is a bathroom inside but it is small and a little grimy but kind of what you would expect.

This second go around was a celebration dinner with my brother so we ordered quite a bit to share. For starters we had their crab rangoon, wontons in chili oil, and salt pepper wings. The rangoons were perfectly crisp but the filling just didn't impress me all too much. I love a good smack of green onion & crab, this one lacked both. Definitely not my favorite rangoons and only 3??? Hmm. The wontons were sublime though. They were nice and plump with a nice punch from the chili oil they bathe in. The chicken wings were pretty standard, I kinda wish there was more pepper on it. It was nice and salty but severely lacked pepper for being a pepper oriented dish. As for the General Tsos? YUM. This was great. The ratio of batter to chicken wasn't bad and it had such a great crisp. The actual General Tso sauce was perfect as well, I could not stop picking at this. The Shrimp Lo Mein was also fantastic, very smoky which I'm a sucker for. The shrimps were perfectly cooked as well and the noodles..... bouncy umami goodness. Delicious food, decent prices, great service I should add. In Chinatown, you learn that hospitality is entirely optional. Here though, they are welcoming and communicate very well with you. Our waiter and the hosts were especially lovely on this night. For next time, I'd pass on the crab rangoons and go for their crispy garlic chicken over the salt pepper wings. There will definitely be a next time though!
