Food is 10 out of 10! Which I'm surprised since there wasn't a single yardie in the kitchen lol. (For those who don't know, a yardie is a native Jamaican). Nonetheless it was a pleasant casual dining experience! I don't know what they put in they Mac n cheese, but it's addicting!! Chicken was cooked perfectly, plantains were perfectly ripened and fried. I am so glad they opened a location near home. They are in the same plaza as bon chon and other great restaurants. Parking is easy access and the restaurant is so clean! Though on the smaller end, everything about our experience was great. Service was quick and the food came out so fast. Prices here are affordable and I HIGHLY recommend the oxtail. The best oxtail in town! They do serve beer, sangria, and I don't recall if they serve wine... but beer and sangria, forsure! I love that they also have combos, where you can mix your meats. Back A Yard Caribbean Grill has opened their third location in the Gould Shopping Center in San Jose at the old Crabaholic spot. I go there just as it opened so I placed my order right away (having been to the Menlo Park and Downtown San Jose locations before). The staff were friendly and attentive as I placed my order for a Beef Oxtails plate and a Guava Pineapple drink. Got the drink and sat down at one of the tables -- the place was spacious. My plate came out soon thereafter. The Oxtails were tender and falling off the bone and were delicious as were the sides of Rice and Beans and Fried Plantains. The Guava Pineapple drink was refreshing and tasty and not too sweet. If I am craving Caribbean food and I'm in the area, I won't hesitate to stop here for a meal. read more

With all these praise, I too love Back A Yard. From my perspective, everything is decently priced (~$10), the outside looks lackluster and small but the inside was actually spacey and clean, and the up front ordering style is a nice and quick touch. Because I didn't want beans, I ordered the Pork Sandwich. The pork was a little dry but the white sauce and fat helped it, and a decent amount of meat was added. Using big white buns is a little downside but it makes the burger look SO big. Fries are both hot and crispy with the right amount of hint of salt. Back A Yard becomes one of my favorite BBQ restaurants and I highly recommend it! read more

Just want to say that I came here last night to this location and I ordered an all white meat, barbecue plates and a chicken plate with barbecue ribs. I proceeded to go to my vehicle to check my food because this is something I always do just to make sure that my order was correct. I take a bite of the chicken breast and the entire chicken breast was raw. It was charred on the outside. The inside was still pink. It was not cooked. I still ended up swallowing a part of the chicken. I am now suffering from food poisoning can't express how important that the temperature of the food being served. I took the food back in. They offered to make me a new plate, but I wanted my money back. I asked for a refund. She says she processed the "return" but it's still not showing up on my statement so hopefully that money goes through within the next 72 hours or by Monday at the latest. Their freshly made juices are on the sweeter side but are still really good too. I would recommend the guava pineapple drink! The mango passion fruit juice is good too. They have a bunch of options worth trying. This places gets pretty packed/busy so if you're hungry, you should definitely order ahead of time! They had a bunch of orders in the evening so we waited over 30 minutes for our food. If you're deciding to eat there, they have a decent amount of casual, indoor seating as well. read more

Back A Yard is totally awesome. The food packs flavorful and tastes great. The jerk chicken combo plate was so freaking good. I love the balance between the plantains, beans and the chicken. The marinate on the chicken pairs really well with the plantains and makes the combo meal very hearty and filling. I also got to sample the salmon combo plate from a friend and the salmon was well cooked. The jerk chicken is not dry whatsoever and very tender. Ugh it really pains me to give them a rating this low but I've been consistently disappointed with this location! My first visit here, I gave them a break because it was within a month of their opening so maybe it was too new but I've been back several times and things haven't gotten much better. I love their oxtails and jerk chicken plates either one or the other or combo, I'll take them all! But I feel like 2/3 times, the oxtail is not tender :( there's nothing worse than chewy and tough oxtail. It has to be tender and fall off the bone! Their downtown location is pretty consistent with this. But here? Not so much. I also looooove corn festivals. Do my hips need them? Nope but they are so darn good, I usually can't resist! No complaints here, these are good every time. Service is usually just ok but this last time omg they were so busy and people were hovering other people's tables hoping they would leave. When one would open up, it took a long time for an employee to clean it so I saw people cleaning other people's plates just so they could have a table! I stopped by Back A Yard on the way down south to Big Sur for the weekend. It was conveniently located not too far off of the highway, so I didn't have to take too much of a detour. I'm really glad I did! It's located within a strip mall, so I have to say that I probably wouldn't have found it if it weren't for Yelp. The food here was pretty spectacular--I got a chicken and oxtail plate, with an additional side of collard greens to add some veggies. Jerk Chicken had a good amount of spice and seasoning and if you wanted more, there was a squeeze bottle of additional jerk sauce available. Plantains were fried perfectly and oxtail meat was falling off the bone, just as it should I paired it with some of their homemade ginger beer, which had a good spice level, which is great for me, since I like mine more zesty than sweet. The plate was pretty hearty and I left stuffed. Couldn't have asked any more about the service and the food came out fast. I would definitely suggest either calling ahead or ordering online if you're planning to do takeout as Caribbean food does take some time to prepare. For about $15 a plate, the portions are very generous and everything was so delicious. We ordered the Thursday special of curried shrimp, which I thought was very tasty. There was a perfect amount of spice and flavor to it. We also ordered the jerk chicken and beef oxtails combo- oh my god the oxtails are life changing! They're so beautifully spiced and they just melt in your mouth. If there's anything you should try at Back-a-Yard, it's their oxtails. What you get in the order: CHICKEN-- First impression on the chicken: t-tender. SO TENDER. Genuinely impressed. The BBQ sauce was good imo, a blend of sweet, slightly acidic, and bold. They really lather it up with the sauce. FRIES-- Crinklecut! My fries were a little dry the second time around but were perfect the first time. They lightly salt the fries. COLESLAW-- Somewhat small container but I don't find this to be an issue personally. Your average coleslaw, nothing extraordinary. The entire thing is a monster of a portion (relative to me anyway..). SAUCES-- Inside the order you get a small thing of BBQ sauce. I implore, GET THE JERK SAUCE. I don't know how to properly describe the taste but imagine the jalapeño had a less spicy, full flavored cousin.
