Whatttt, I've never had Caribbean food til now and BOY was I missing out. We ordered the curried goat and beef oxtails and jerk chicken. Also the sauces they had were super good so I didn't mind paying an extra 35 cents for those. The jerk sauce is super good and I asked them for the spiciest sauce they had which was good as well! I love spice and it always makes dishes better imo. There were bones we had to be careful about, but other than that everything was sooooo good. Their mac was so good as well, REALLY good actually I'm craving some as I type. It's been a long time coming since my last bite at the Menlo Park location years ago. Coming to this new location and tasting the food brought back memories. My wife and is decided to come during lunch. I ordered their curry goat & oxtail combo while my wife just had the oxtail meal. The food was packed with so much flavor, meat was tender and fell off the bone, sauces mixed well with the rice, and of course my favorite, plantains were on point. I tried ordering an extra side of plantains but I guess there was a shortage? Everything tastes perfect. I wasn't that much of a big fan of their corn bread but that's for another day. Actions speak louder than words. Between 2 locations and Door dash, I've had Back A Yard at least 30 times over the years. I mainly get a combination of jerked pork, jerked chicken, and oxtails. Sometimes the chicken and pork could get a little dry and other times it is moist, juicy and delicious. The plantains are fried and has a perfectly balanced sweetness. I'm always doing low carb, but the rice here is my weakness when it's always so flavorful. On average, this is still 5 stars. Been a fan of this place for quite some time. Used to work over near the one in downtown San Jose. This is the first time trying this venue. I like it better because the parking situation is easier. This place is amongst a large shopping center as well as a McDonald's so of you have a kid that isn't a fan of Jamaican food at least you have another option for them within walking distance. My husband and I came in on a Thursday around 5PM. Due to Covid they are not allowing dine-in and don't have outdoor seating. We've gotten used to car picnicking anyway. Backayard knew what they were doing when they made 1/2 curry goat and 1/2 oxtail a plate option. How would one even choose one over the other? It comes with rice and beans and fried plantains.y husband wanted the chicken and ribs plate only that plate comes with fries and coleslaw so we subbed it out for rice and beans and plantains. You HAVE to sub it out...don't go to a Jamaican restaurant ordering some French fries and coleslaw you are liable to get punched in the throat...by me...lol..jk! I also ordered a jerk chicken plate for my son and some plantains and collard greens for my other son. My husband also ordered a pineapple guava juice. All in all I paid about $60. Not bad as portions are huge. The goat was tender and NOT gamey AT ALL! The curry was soaked into every morsel. You couldn't help but lick your fingers not wanting anything to go to waste. The oxtail pulled away from the bone without effort. Both are well done. The rice and beans had that hint of coconut that you need to temper the curry and oxtail on your lips. The plantains sweet and toasted just enough to have a crisp outside but soft inside. Husbands ribs were also very succulent and fall of the bone. Chicken tender and seasoned perfectly. My son enjoyed his jerk chicken and even tasted my goat and is a fan. My other son didn't approve of collard greens, he used to the way I make mine and it's difficult for him to find another that compares. The portions were huge. We had plenty leftovers. I add on hush puppies (basically cornbread). The sauce they use is addictive, I dip/pour it with all the food, it's tangy and spicy. The jerk chicken is flavorful and juicy. The best item is the plantain, it's so good. I like the sweetness of the plantain then dipping it in the sauce. Hush puppies are a good contrast in texture when everything is soft. Decided to call in my order for the Jerk Chicken/Oxtail combo plate and was told it would be ready in 10 minutes. Twelve minutes later, we roll into the Gould Shopping Center parking lot. I was expecting to see a line out the door, but it was still early. The restaurant is still accepting take-out orders only, with their tables and chairs stacked up against the walls. My order was ready and waiting for me. I proceeded to "check-in" on my Yelp app and discovered I had earned a free order of their fried plantains, which they happily redeemed for me! If you crave something a touch lighter but still want your Carribean food craving filled, try one of the bowls. It's a smaller portion that includes one protein and one scoop of rice over greens.
