First time in. We planned to grab a bite and drink before seeing a movie next door at the attached ACX theatre, which can be risky business to make it to your movie on time, which turns out was the case. The two of us sat at the bar. It was otherwise empty apart from a couple of tables scattered throughout. While the bartender was so sweet, she was surely overwhelmed as the restaurant was very understaffed. We waited a good 10-15 before being served drinks, and I was hesitant to put in food at risk it wouldn't make it out in time. Alas, we went for it and were able to eat in just the nick of time before heading over to our movie. We went with the burrata app, and it was OK. Maybe I have have burrata standards (lol), but I was hoping for the big ball in the middle to dip into. Instead it was slices a top of sourdough and arugula. Wouldn't order this again, but we did see some of their pizzas coming out of the kitchen which looked delish, so maybe that's the play next time! I've got mixed feelings about this place. Hubby and I are regulars next door at Buchanans and got to know our servers there pretty well there. They were closed this day for some reason, but I knew Backlot had the same owners and wanted to give them a try and thought this was a good opportunity. We thought it'd be good to have another "regular" joint to get our happy hour fixers for the week. Our server Nivea was nice enough and came by often to clear out the table for us. We tried talking with her a few times, but she wasn't in a talking mood. A little more friendly would have gone a long way, but that's ok, we weren't there to make friends. She was still very helpful, giving us good directions as to how to place the order and pay, which was all done at the bar, and she would bring the food to us. The best part of the night was the ambience. It's really pretty inside, and super airy and well lit. We came in a little after 5 on a Tuesday, so it pretty empty, and sat by the window where a lot of light was coming in so it just felt really nice. The food was medium. The wings were exactly the same as what I get at Buchanans - not the best wows I've had, but solid. I got mine naked with sauce on the side, and actually, the sauce was a tad better. Our friends had theirs tossed, and they looked really good. The Detroit Classic pizza was good. But not worth $16. We were at happy hour, so only paid $9, so we were pretty happy. It's more of an individual sized pizza for a man rather than a sharable. Spinach and artichoke dip was not worth $13, but good for the happy hour price of $7. actually, I really enjoyed the dip, but it came with a HUGE portion of sourdough (I didn't have any cuz I'm on keto, but the rest of my table killed them - apparently pretty good lol). It was really too little dip for too much bread. Thankfully, it came with carrots and celery too, which was perfect for my keto. But...! the veggies were dreadful. It was mushy rather than crunchy. Weird. I asked our server whether they are blanched or something, just to make sure. She had no idea, and said she could get me more, and came back to tell me that the kitchen will cut up some more for me. It took about 15 minutes, and the new ones that came out weren't much better. Out of the 3 pieces of carrots, one was actually crunchy, while the others were bendy and mushy. Gross. Celery looked just as wilted. My friends didn't want to touch them, but commented that they looked like they were maybe frozen previously. When our bill came, we found out that Lakefront IPA and Alaskan Amber aren't domestic. Since when did Lakefront go international? So, word of caution, check which "domestic draft beer" in their happy hour is considered domestic. They seem to have a different definition of the word. Also you may have to check your bill to make sure the happy hour items are billed to happy hour prices. I just feel that overall, the prices are higher than warranted for the fare received, but ok for happy hour. Despite the subpar reviews, I've been looking forward to trying Backlot Pizza + Kitchen since they opened because I want the restaurant/bowling alley/theater concept at Bayshore to succeed. My family won a gift card for them on social media, so that was the perfect opportunity to stop by. I ordered the meatball pizza and added cream cheese, my wife got the Detroit classic pizza without sauce, one kid got chicken tenders, and the other got grilled cheese. We also shared cheese curds. The cheese curds are the greasy, cornmeal-like breaded kind I don't care for. Sigh. The kids liked their chicken tenders and grilled cheese, but one didn't like the pepper in the seasoning on the fries. For the most part my wife and I liked our pizzas. Both of us thought the shredded Parmesan on top was unnecessary and I wish they had put more cream cheese on mine. I wouldn't rush back for the pizza, but I'd get it again. Near the end of our dinner our server brought over a QR code and said she'd give us a discount on our meal for a "shout out" in a Google review. Like pretty much everyone else we didn't think the service was worth a positive review, so we skipped the discount. It is sad, though, that they need to bribe customers for good reviews. read more

First visit. Backlot has locations at Bayshore Town Center and Elkhorn, NE and owned by the ACX Entertainment company that took over the former IPiC Entertainment Center movie theater, bowling lanes, and restaurants. I sat at the bar and received great service from Vee, who had a busy bar to take care of on her own. I arrived during Happy Hour, which is 3:00-6:00 during the week and 1:00-6:00 on Sundays. I ordered the Detroit Classic pizza which is "double pepperoni" and the Calamari, both $9 each during Happy Hour. Tbe Calamari came with three dipping sauces, Marinara, garlic aioli, and some kind of ranch. The flavors of the marinara and garlic aioli were decent but the textures were off. The marinara was too thick, and tasted just like the pizza sauce, so I'm pretty sure they are one and the same. The garlic aioli was a bit clumpy. The herbs in the seasoning on the calamari was really good, but the breading was too thick for my liking. The calamari itself was fine. The Detroit Classic didn't have the amount of pepperoni I expected for having "double pepperoni" in the description but for a $9 Happy Hour price, I'll give them a pass. The pizza sauce was thick and had a good, slightly spicy flavor, and the pizza tasted good overall, but it did not meet the characteristics of a Detroit Style pizza. The cheese didn't spread to the edge and caramelize, the pizza crust was too dense and fluffy, similar to Rocky Rococo, and did not have the buttery and crisp texture underneath that is common with Detroit style pizza. So, the flavors hir but textures did not, and texture on Detroit style pizza and calamari matter to me. So you should check it out to see if the food works for you, but I learned what I needed to learn on this visit, so I won't have to go back. read more

It's a bit pricey, but in a pretty, open space with an intimate feel. Conveniently attached to the bowling alley and right next door to Buchanan's. Family friendly. My husband ordered the Bourbon BBQ hamburger, minus the BBQ sauce, and I ordered the BPK Salad with the dressing on the side. While the kitchen initially made the burger with the sauce, our server caught it in time, and they made another one without. It was very good, with the double burgers being nicely seared on the outside and juicy on the inside. The fries were hot, crispy, and perfectly salty. My salad, on the other hand, was a disaster. Firstly, it didn't have the advertised feta cheese or black olives, and I looked. What I did find was salad dressing and diced veggies at the bottom of the bowl. So what it looked like they did, was make my salad minus the feta and olives, put on the dressing, realize they messed up, took off as much dressed lettuce as they could, flipped the salad over into a new bowl, then threw on extra lettuce. After asking for feta cheese and getting a very small amount, I tried to make the best of it but couldn't do it. I told our server I couldn't eat it, and she took it back. While she was apologetic and told me she'd discount the salad, I laughed after checking the bill and seeing the discount on my $15 salad was only $3. Very cute environment, conveniently connected to ACX bowling and movies. Bar seating and booth and table seating. Went with friends and it was a great girls night. We went on a Friday and they were not busy at all we were seated very quickly. Joanne our server was super friendly and so nice! One of the best waitresses we've ever had! They had a nice cocktail menu and even had dessert cocktails. My friend loved their espresso martini. I had the "Tijuana Brass", strong taste and smell. The pizza was good I loved how buttery and thick the crust was while not being too crunchy! I personally was not a big fan of the smoked bacon Mac n cheese. It was very creamy and there were lots of bacon pieces but the overall flavor just wasn't there, it was bland. Overall we enjoyed our time there and the price is reasonable (some items could be lowered) for the ambiance, service, and quality. read more

Was told to seat ourself when we wandered in. Our waitress was not very friendly, but opened up as we continued to try and have conversation. Needs attention to detail for cleaning. Just seemed sticky, and the windows had food and handprints smeared all over. The firecracker dip is literally pizza sauce with red peppers and goat cheese, it didn't even come with the sourdough that was described on the menu, surprise we received pita bread. Wine was overpriced for a small pour. Pizza was good, but didn't stand out compared to the rest of the experience. read more

Date of visit: October 15, 2023 The North Shore is--let's be honest--a bit of a restaurant desert. Many of the other Milwaukee-area shopping centers have a plethora of dining options but Bayshore is lagging behind. I viewed the pending opening of Backlot Pizza + Kitchen with a fair amount of trepidation; this space has been a couple different things in the past and both had some solid bits but also left much to be desired. Our initial visit during their soft opening however, was excellent! I was able to make reservations through OpenTable (always a plus!) and we had a great meal. They were running a great Happy Hour on Sunday evenings, I always appreciate opportunities to stretch my dollar further. We started with some Spinach & Artichoke Dip, which was amazing. The breadcrumbs on top have a bit of spice to them, but it doesn't linger too much, so don't be scared off if spice isn't your thing--it definitely isn't mine! I ordered the Detroit (essentially pepperoni) and my husband went with the BBQ Bourbon Chicken. After trying a piece of the other's we ended up swapping! The Detroit wasn't bad, it just had an herb-like flavor that wasn't hitting for me. The sweetness of the barbecue though, was fantastic. Pizzas are about the size of a piece of paper, and come cut into four pieces, though the toppings definitely encourage you to use a fork and knife, at least initially. The happy hour prices are right on for the pizzas, the regular prices a bit less so. Hope they adjust that when they "go live." Anton, our server, was attentive and great at explaining menu options. A great addition to Bayshore. I've been here several times since they opened and the pizza is very good! They have a nice cocktail menu- and the space is causal and fun. Date night appropriate, or just hanging out- it fits the bill. My favorite pizza is the Cadillac and it's even good the next day cold! read more

Came for happy hour only to be told they didn't have anyone there old enough to pour drinks. No management on site and two 16 year olds that didn't really know what was going on. We've been here several times and while service has always been hit or miss, we wanted to keep giving this new restaurant a chance as we don't have many options in this neighborhood. However, it's clear management doesn't care and sets their staff up for failure, so we wont be back. read more

My burger was tasty the ambiance is fine BUT Staff is desperately in need of proper training. I totally blame ineffective or nonexistent training for; Not knowing what the wine is on the menu when ordered. I.e. having to hold the menu and point to the words Pinot Grigio. Having to ask twice for flatware and napkins. Why are these not on the table?? White wine served not chilled Wait staff was polite and friendly but seemed ignorant of basic understanding of their own menu and oblivious to basic set up practices. The service was one of the worst I have ever experienced in the Milwaukee area. Despite many waiters, they did not have a clue what they were doing. Many reminders for missing food / no cutlery, napkins or plates. Everything took forever... in the end they as well seem to have entered our order wrongly in their system and couldn't figure out the check anymore . The pizza's were ok. Nice looking restaurant. Took forever to get a menu, drinks took forever and the food took even longer. We were there 2 hrs and never asked if we wanted drinks refilled. Had to go to the bar to ask for more water. Most of the food was bland, made incorrect and barely warm. Took 30 minutes to get a Caesar salad after everyone else was served. Pizza was ok. Don't order a Bloody Mary, it was vodka and tomato juice, no seasoning or flavor at all! The music was so loud that we had to yell to speak to each other and the waitress couldn't even hear us as we ordered. Don't plan on returning. read more

I ordered 4 gluten free pizzas on Christmas Day (2 Detroit Classic and 2 Combos). I arrived 25 minutes early and waited. When the pizzas were ready and handled over to me in a bag, I did not look at them until I arrived at the family gathering. All 4 of the pizzas were burnt on the top and the crust was brown. The Detroit Classics were inedible due to the black burnt toppings. The Combo pizza toppings were brown but not black as the Detroit Classic. Date of visit: November 4, 2023 My husband and I dined here again (we had previously during the soft opening, enjoyed it with great pizza and wonderful service) over the weekend looking forward to the full menu being offered (past soft open stage when the menu was limited) as promoted on the website, through emails, etc. We had reservations for 5:15 knowing last time it took awhile and didn't want to rush to make a 7:00 start of a theater performance. We were seated by a server who immediately took our order after telling us that the "handheld section" on the menu was not available (disappointing for my husband who wanted the Italian Beef, he opted for the Detroit pizza instead), but everything else was available so I ordered the black bean burger Poblano style with sweet potato fries. He comes back in a few minutes asking me how I wanted my burger which confused me because I ordered the bean and not a beef burger. When I repeated that the server said, "oh, that's right, never mind." Fast forward about 45 minutes and the food arrives, my husband's is correct and mine is wrong (a beef burger arrives (wrong) with regular fries (again, wrong as I ordered sweet potato fries)). The server apologizes and rushes back to the kitchen, I persuade my husband to start eating because this won't take long to rectify. About a minute later the server comes back and says they don't have bean burgers either - what? At this point we've been there almost an hour so I order the veggie pizza asking the server to please rush it. He says he will, that in "8 minutes it will be here" which turned into 25 minutes. In the meantime he never asks my husband how his pizza is and doesn't refill his soda glass which has sat empty for 30 minutes. My husband eventually went up to the bar and asked the bartender to refill it. At around 6:25 my pizza (which was delicious) arrives which I eat quickly in order to leave by 6:45 to make the start of the play. Needless to say this was a disappointing and frustrating experience (the restaurant was not that busy, we counted only five other tables and at least three other servers) especially after such a good experience the first time. We are all for supporting new businesses and trying new restaurants, but unfortunately may not be returning to this one. read more

Had a wonderful dinner at Backlot Pizza. The Buratta appetizer was excellent. Creamy burrata cheese, bacon jam and balsamic vinegar on grilled sourdough bread. The Detroit style pizzas are very good. Stopped for lunch on July 4th. We were first customers for lunch around noon. Nobody there to greet or seat us, so we grabbed menus and sat ourselves. Someone finally noticed us and took our order. Could not order anything from the bar, no bartender working so just had a soda. Didn't wait long for pizza which was pretty good aside from way too many green peppers. Four more tables came in and sat themselves, we told a couple where to find menus. Only one waitress working who appeared to be new and very inexperienced. Waited for check and got our own to go boxes instead of waiting longer. Never saw anyone else other than our waitress. Nice ambiance, it's a shame they can't staff place adequately. read more

The people that work here are so nice. The bartenders are quick and considerate. The pizza is delicious. This restaurant is the first time I've tried Detroit style and it's great. We waited over 30 minutes just to be told they are out of the wines we ordered. Over 40 minutes for one pizza to come out and only one at a time. The last pizza came out when we asked for the check. The same happened to the table next to us. Unfortunately the food was pretty good, however will not be returning do to the s****y service. Took 45 minutes for my DIET COKE to come out. Absolutely disappointed. Additionally they kept being good we never ordered, seemed like they did not even know table numbers. Good food bad service. There was one server, one bartender, one bus boy. The waitress greeted us and said we will be seated. We waited. She came back to seat us. We sat and wated. The bartender came over. She said are you still waiting. She brought us water and menus. Then came back and took our order. She brought our order later. At 8:30 the busboy asked to clean our table. We were still eating and drinking. At 9 he returned interrupting our conversation. At 9:30 a lady scantily dressed walked by and said can I take that. We looked puzzled. After several minutes of contemplating she continued "I work here and I want to close them out." We gave in. When she returned with our change we explained our hesitation. We explained we didn't know she worked there, and she didn't introduce herself. She stated I never introduce myself. We were very disappointed with the service. We had the fried cauliflower and Buffalo sauce. The atmosphere was ok all three businesses flowed after awhile. The bowling alley had large tv screens playing foot ball the Bar next door had live music. When backlog turned off their music the band music was ok. read more
