Excellent food and very friendly service with a smile. I ate the chicken wrap with bacon and avocado. My son ate the Baja burger. We both very much enjoyed it! If I can leave no star I would... The soup came out cold and when I sent it back to be heated up, it actually came back colder then before... The fried calamari was no different, came out ice cold... The tuna was also extremely old, it looked like rubber and was chewier then eating a candy... The 10 oz steak that my daughter ordered was about 50% fat and the side of mashed potatoes that came with it was filled with a ridiculous amount of pepper... I got the risotto and it looked and felt like paste... It was so clumped together and just like the appetizers before it, it was cold... Do yourselves a favor and stay at your beach house and eat a bowl of cereal with some sour milk.... Would not recommend. Food was way overpriced and awful. Any place that offers calimari we will try once. What a huge mistake. We might as well have ordered battered rubberbands. chewy and no flavor and barely warm. one bite and we sent them back. Main dishes; Cajun Fish Tacos and the Sesame Tuna Steak. The Cajun Taco's were way over seasoned. My spouse managed to eat most of one before pushing the plate away. I tried a bite and immediately my taste buds were attacked with nothing but burning cajun spices. No other flavors were present. I had the Tuna "steak" which was ordered rare. The result was a sesame seed coated slab of some kind of fish that was rare in the middle, but I got the sense it had but pulled out of a plastic bag "as is". I picked at it for about 3 bites worth and pushed it away as well. The waiter looked to be 14yrs old and couldn't care less how our meal went. He had no idea about specials and had never even heard of an Arnold Palmer. Clearly we blame the owner for the untrained waiter. Good Servers expect good tips, but if the food sucks, their customers will not tip well, no matter how well they are served, so the smart and talented servers will quickly run for the hills. What customers are left with is kids and dolts who think a $5 tip on a $50 bill is awesome. Finally, as we were leaving, we figured out the appeal and the only reason this place still exists; its location. Baja has always been one of my favorite places. The food and drinks always pair perfectly with the sunsets. My go-to is the Baja shrimp tacos or any of their burgers on "burgers and brews night". The wait staff is always friendly and willing to help, Lauren was our server tonight and was awesome. A summer must-visit for anyone down in Sandbridge. The main dining building is admittedly small so any large parties should try to call ahead but well worth any wait. read more

This place is great! Found this by accident one morning, I was actually lost, and I was running late for breakfast and just stopped in. Got a breakfast burrito that was phenomenal and two Bloody Mary's since the first one was so good. The atmosphere inside is fantastic. Open windows all around with a great view of the bay and a constant breeze. It looks like they have live music there but not the morning I was there. Bill the owner was very friendly with a great since of humor and the young women who waited on us were just the same. I will be going back for more, I won't be lost the next time. read more

Spare yourself the trouble. Just drive into town and find anything besides this place. They told us it was gonna be five minutes to be seated it took them over 15 minutes to seat us and then it took over 45 minutes just to get us a burger. Definitely not worth the investment of time. read more

It's off season but the restaurant was still busy. The sodas and tea were way to sweet. The service was good, the food leaves a little to desire. We visited on a Wednesday night during off season. The place was about 1/4 full around 7pm. We asked the hostess (we think her name was Gracie) if it were possible to get a table outside. She said outside was by reservation only. Ok no problem we understand that. She said it would be about a 10 minute wait for a table inside. Again no problem. We moved out of the way to wait. Less than a minute later a group of 3 people walks in and asks to be seated outside. The hostess says "let me go see if anything is available". The wife and I look at each other in disbelief. She comes back and says it's about a 30 minute wait for a table outside. Say what ??? They say we will just eat inside so she picks up menus and seats them ahead of us while we just stand there in disbelief. 5 minutes later she decides to seat us. Our waiter was decent and the food was just average. If there were any other restaurants in the area this one would be out of business in one season. We gave 2 stars just because our server was good but unfortunately his tip reflected not just him but the overall service of the restaurant. read more

Took the family to eat, many state it is a tourist trap for the condos across the street which we are staying at, but the parking lot is always full, so we gave it a try. First bowl ever of she crab soup, it was very think, maybe too thick, but also very good, lots of crab and flavor. The margaritas were very good. The crab cake dinner and the goat cheese salad were shared between myself and my wife, both were very good, and the kids enjoyed their hamburgers. Price a bit high, but it is right on the bay so not sure what else to expect. I would go back. read more

I hate to update reviews and downgrade, I truly do... we revisited this place on our annual visit to Sandbridge, and I have to say we were downright disgusted with the service, food, and drink we received. We were sat in the bar area as a party of 6, and waited about 5 minutes for a kid who couldn't have been more than 15 to greet us. He took our drink orders, and then proceeded to mill around between the back of house, expo area, and who knows where else. He finally returned roughly 5 minutes later (we are 10 minutes in now, with small children) to drop off drinks and take the order. The drinks, I'm dissapointed to say, had little to no alcohol. I am a margarita aficionado, and I know my drink, and this had tons of margarita mix and no tequila. We waited to catch a glimpse of the waiter / kid, and finally after another 5 or so we found him, let him know the drinks were wrong, and asked him to have them remade. Instead, he brought a second round (which we were charged for), and they weren't much better than the first, if at all. Now for the food... after roughly 20 minutes, he brought the entrees in pieces (2 here, 2 a couple minutes later), and lo and behold, no pizza for the kids. Everyone else had food, the kids didn't - crazy, right? So waiter says "it'll be 5 minutes"... 20 minutes later, after everyone else but me and the kids had eaten, I asked for a manager... the owner comes over (with a rather belligerent attitude, I might add), and tells me that the pizza oven was backed up as an explanation (never bothering to acknowledge the waiter told us 5 minutes and never came back), and, that he personally watched the bartenders pour the drinks and they weren't wrong. Listen, pal, first of all, I don't care what the excuse for the pizza is - they are 4 and 6 years old, and if your pizza kitchen's that backed up, at least bring them bread to eat so they don't blow up - As for the drinks, don't argue with the customer --- you might be right, I might be wrong, but instead of being a jerk and bicker, offer an alternative solution (I'd have happily tried another drink in substitute). Very poor customer service all the way around, and it tells me they could care less about his patrons. To top it all off, they had the gall to charge us an 18% tip on the bill, even though the waiter did a terrible, terrible job and our experience was poor. Seriously, save your hard earned money and go elsewhere, or skip dinner if that's the only option (you may never get your food here anyway...) read more

I agree with these last two reviews in 2013. The owners are not paying attention to what is going on in this restaurant. This used to be a great place to get food. The new owners used to be there all there the time and had a presence. They are not there anymore. It has gotten very sloppy with slow service. The she crab soup used to be their claim to fame.....so much that they would not give out the recipe. It is now become too thick....too gunky to even handle. I ordered their scallop special, to go, so I could take it back to my house. It was $12. It was 4 scallops on a bed of lettuce. Nothing else was given to me and they were so undercooked, I had to put them into my oven to get them up to par. read more

Our food was good. Service was great. The restaurant is really clean and has a nice setting. It can even be considered romantic but def family friendly. It is super overpriced though. It's a great place though for the area. Our food came out hot and pretty quickly. The bartender was very nice as well. I guess if you can drive 20 minutes away, I suggest going to a different restaurant with better prices. I get that it's in a tourist area but I'm a local so I know other restaurants with better prices and food exist about 20 min away. read more

Not sure how to rate this place. It's the only place on the strip to really hang out at a bar. The atmosphere is great, however if you don't like hot, humid air-conditionless, open windows and doors and you are comfortable being the buffet for the millions of mosquitos this is the place may not be for you. WORD OF ADVICE - Bring bug deterrent for yourself and your group. Bring some extra cans for your fellow bar mates and charge $2.00 per spray. You will drink for free all night. The sole drink we had was cold, mixed well and served quickly at the bar. We chugged ours halfway through because we were losing so much blood from the mosquitos. Good luck. read more

While I understood that the kitchen was short staffed, it is no excuse and the restaurant should have had an even more limited menu, as what was served was horrible. Food took forever and tasted terrible. Cold and undercooked. At least a manager should have come out to apologize to the tables rather than leaving it to the wait staff. The Baja is convenient if you are staying in Sandbridge. That is its best feature. 1) Wear almost nothing, as the temperature in the restaurant is unbearable. This makes it very unappetizing. My sister in law passed out from the heat in Baja last year. 2) My family has been here 3 times in the past year. We had to return food to the kitchen everytime. The calamari was dripping in oil and not thoroughly cooked, the rice was crunchy, and the risotto could have been used as glue. Be careful what you order! 3) The food that was delicious is as follows: a) She Crab Soup- best we had in VA Beach. b) Shrimp and Mahi Mahi tacos- fresh and flavors are delicious. c) Pizza- thick, hot, and toppings were plentiful. d) Hush puppies- huge and flavorful Food is a hit or miss here, but it is the temperature that ruins the experience. It doesn't appear the owner is going to fix the AC anytime soon. We complained after my sister in law passed out last year, and the temps were just as warm this year. read more

I went to Baja (in the bar portion) on a Thursday night. This happened to be karaoke night and, unlike most karaoke places I've been to, there was lots of energy, good talent, dancing, and everyone had a good time. I had such a good time on karaoke night that I decided to go back Friday for dinner and to listen to a local band at the bar afterwards. The food was decent, and there was something for everyone. The food was served pretty quickly even though it was very crowded as it was all of the vacationers' last night at Sandbridge. Overall, Baja is definitely the place to be in Sandbridge if you're looking to have some fun. Even if you don't live in Sandbridge, Baja is a nice change to the downtown Virginia Beach crowd. 2 stars for the drinks, which are priced great at happy hour. Food is poor and overpriced. I am a local and went here with my family, awful po boy and the crab cakes were small and very poor quality. The food here needs more attention from somebody, it is a crime to serve something labeled as seafood and present it as deep fried, overcooked dog toys. I was actually embarrassed because I had guests with me. Our server was sweet and the place is clean, a nice beach vibe and young staff make the potential of this place huge! We made the drive because it is local and off the beaten path. Most hidden gems are like that. So we traveled for a Sunday Brunch. Get this, in high season, they were out of eggs! The place was not busy. Not a surprise. What is the management thinking? What are the owners/investors thinking? Yikes. 5 stars to the staff. 5 stars to the bloody mary. Mediocre food, terrible service , bad management. I am sure the only reason this place is in business is that it's the only restaurant in south sandbridge. Went today (Sunday) around noon for brunch, when we get there we are told that they are not serving brunch today because they ran out of eggs. We were disappointed but decided to just order a couple of crabcake sandwiches and the special of the day (short rib quesadilla). It took almost an hour for our food to arrive, minus our french fries (they would arrive 5 minutes later unseasoned and raw in the middle). The crabcakes were average, the quesadilla was terrible. The short ribs were not slow cooked or braised they looked like they were just thrown on the flattop and fried. Our waitress never asked how our food was. (I am sure she knew it was terrible), we never were offered refills on our drinks and it took another 10 minutes for her to take our check. About the only thing that would have made this experience worse would be food poisoning... We will not be back read more

I can't recommend it. Food was alright for the price. Service was not very good. Overwhelmed waiters and waitresses. We were a group of about 17 in two tables. Placed orders at about the same time. One table got done before the other one got its order. The owner of the restaurant, Jim Reeves, brought his explanation of the delay with technical excuses and a loud, menacing tone of voice. If a waiter had communicated with clients in that way he or she would have been fired on the spot at any other restaurant, or for that matter, at any other business. Also gave us trouble to split the bill. Poor treatment from the owner, left us all upset and with a terrible taste. Some of us had the impression that his behavior was quite strange. He was aggressive and out of sorts. We are locals, and bring our out of town friends there once a year to drop $300 in dinner and drinks. We all think that that might not happen again. read more

My family and I stayed across the street from Baja when I graduated from college a few weeks ago. Having lived in this area for 5 years, I have been dying to try this place out and I'm so glad I finally got the chance to. We had a really late dinner here and we all thought our food was okay. What really makes this place amazing though is the coffee bar they have every morning. What normally is a bar at night, turns into a full blown coffee shop in the morning with tons of drinks, pastries and breakfast sandwiches. Every morning, we would walk here and get coffee and breakfast. The view is incredible and we really enjoyed having a coffee while overlooking it. The service here is impeccable. The first day we tried this, we must've looked like we didn't know where to go or what to do, and one of the employees pulled us aside, told us about all the different coffee options, where they get their coffee beans from, etc. You even have an area on the side where you can customize your coffee to exactly your liking with many flavorings, sugars, etc. We really loved this place and hope to be back next time I'm closer to Sandbridge! read more

Honestly this place surprised me. With the 3.5 star review we weren't expecting much. But from the moment we arrived, the hostesses and our servers were above and beyond. Our choices from the menu (steamed shrimp, diver scallops on greens, and one of their salads) were very fresh and not loaded down with dressings or spices. The restaurant and their viewable kitchen area was super-clean and organized. The Baja-Rita w banana liquor was strong and excellent. My husband enjoyed the options for craft beers. And the sunset makes it the place to be. Lots of people, dodgeball with kids was happening. A nice place to be on a Sandbridge weeknight. read more
