Upon referral from a local friend, we stumbled upon this quaint little cafe/bakery, packed full of Southern charm, right in the "Hart" of Seattle's Colombia City. We were greeted warmly by the owner, Bill Hart, who took his time answering all of our questions and helped us decide on our perfect rainy day dessert-- Banana pudding which he prepared for us on the spot. Layered with Nilla Wafers, this wonderfully flavorful dish is full of childhood nostalgia, and paired with a fresh cup of piping hot coffee, was the perfect afternoon treat. The atmosphere is cozy... you feel like you are in a living room full of love. A warm fire, a comfy chaise, and a chess board complete the space, and Bill hanging out with his friends in the adjoining room, hurrying to the front whenever someone comes through the door, makes you feel as though you are hanging out in the home of a good friend. His pies come in bite size tarts, medium personal sized pies, and full size, so there is something here for every appetite. We will definitely be back to try the Tropical Chess! read more

The crust was perfectly flaky and buttery, and neither pie was too sweet. Mr. Hart's 2017 Thanksgiving could be summed up as one of major growing pains. And for several of us who were part of that overnight growth, it was a bit painful for our schedules. Just 12 days earlier, a glorious newspaper article described his heavenly pies in such detail that many more orders came into his small shop. As is often the case with some especially talented individuals, he didn't have all of the business support or systems he needed. Some of us waited for hours. I'm sure this will be all fixed. But as I walked to the car, as I left his little slice-of-heaven kitchen/cafe, where I had stood with a group of people waiting much longer than we had hoped to wait, in a space that smelled like the best pie ever but also was awfully warm by necessity, surrounded by people in the state of mind common to the frenetic day before thanksgiving, something hit me. We could have left, cancelled, a number of other options, but even when he admitted the new flood of holiday orders were overwhelming his kitchen and the wait would continue a couple more hours for some of us, I was tickled to see that many just made calls home to say "I will be here a bit longer. This is my new favourite place. I had Bills pie after a Philly across the street. I quickly became obsessed! Haha. He is such a good baker! I love the sweet potato, sweet bean supreme, and brownies. Bill Hart is so nice and friendly. His pies are delicious! My friend and I just happened to stumble upon this shop while on vacation and loved our treat. I got the sweet potato pie and it was superb! The shop is so cute! It feels very home-y like when you walk in. The furniture is mismatched and there are pictures of black artists and famous people hung up on the walls. I pre-ordered a coconut custard pie two days prior to pick up. I ask for less sugar, baker tells me they don't make their pies too sweet. I tell him that I want to get it at 2pm on Friday. I come by the store at 2:30pm on pick up day. He tells me "girl it won't be ready until 4pm." I say well I have to leave town with the pie soon and ask him if it isn't ready are there other pies. He says yes. I call at 4pm and it is ready. No apology for having my pie late and when i come to pick it up I asked if there were any samples of the other flavours, he tells me he has no samples and the mini pies are 2 bucks. Lol! Thought it would have been nice to get a little smthg for him not being on time. So we are at the cabin with friends the night after and I serve the pie. I ordered a coconut custard pie, it is lemon flavor with tiny bits of coconut shreds. The pie was also very sweet and I asked for less sugar. I wanted to go there to support small businesses but I would have been better off buying a frozen pie from QFC. Quite disappointing. read more

I stopped in and picked up a small pie today (key lime chess) and it was great! Flaky crust with a smooth, tart filling. Bill was warm and friendly and I can't wait to try more of his pies. My partner bought a small blackberry cobbler pie + mini sweet bean supreme pie while getting food to-go from Philly's today, especially since the pies are from a black-owned business. We heated them up in the toaster oven and they tasted so delicious - buttery, flaky crust and not-too-sweet blackberry purée, and comforting (again, perfectly sweet but not overly so) $1 mini pie. Hart is such a sweet guy. His shop is so welcoming and the fireplace is on in the winter time. His pies comes in different sizes, 2 inches, 4inches, and 9 inches. The 2 inch pie is super adorable and perfect if you want something sweet just for yourself. We got the 2 inch pecan pie and the 4 inch apple pie. We stumbled across Bills shop getting my car serviced a block down. It's very easy to miss but cozy once coming inside. Had a tropical and sweet potato pie that were to die for.. Crust is perfectly fluffy and light. He has many varieties and full stock of his 2" tartlet ($1.50) and 4" personal slice pie ($5). It is dangerously close to the Mr baker light rail station and is a small gem in the city! read more

I was in Seattle for the first time at the Urban Book Expo. One of the authors suggested this location for a delicious treat. With a couple of hours to kill we took an Uber to Baked from the Hart. My spouse ordered the Sweet Potato Pie and I the Bean pie. The male staff member talked the Sweet Potato pie up so much we couldn't wait for them to be warmed and delivered to our table. We were not disappointed. In fact, I purchased two pies to go. One sweet potato and the other peach cobbler. As a late night snack I devoured the Sweet potato pie. Once morning arrived I was excited to try the Peach cobbler. Which was, "smack yo mama" good. Patti ain't got nothing on these pies. Great place! Got the tropical chess and blackberry tart and both were excellent. Chef hart even put some ice cream on our tart. cappuccino was also really wonderful. I'm still in complete shock after my experience today. I get holidays are busy and hard, however I also believe that when chaos breaks lose the least you can do is apologize for the 4 hour wait to pick up a pie ordered 3 weeks prior. I had to go back 2 different times, both times showing extreme patience and understanding. They still were never ready. On my last trip I wanted to cancel and just dispute it with my credit card company for not getting what I wanted however at the end of the day I needed the pies and paid (with a $15 tip for the chaos of the holidays) $80 for them already which was mandatory. When they said they were ready they asked me what kind I ordered and told them the two different ones I did and they said they can only give me one because they "stopped making the others ones today". Wrong time to tell me that, i should have been told that when i first ordered them OR the other two times coming to grab them. No apology was ever given and I showed patience the whole entire time. On my way out I was extremely disappointed to see that they also use store bought pie crust. For a $35 pie? I could have done that all within one hour for $5.99. I don't care how good some people think they taste, respect is half the battle and I feel like I got slapped in the face. If they would have apologized i wouldn't have even come close to writing this review however Unfortunately all 20 other guests I saw come and go had the same experience. I have finally found a peach pie that uses nutmeg, just like my mother used to make. AND, their pecan pie is as good as mine, also from my mother's recipe box, and I have NEVER said that about any pecan pie anywhere. Most are too sweet, but this pecan pie holds the right balance, so the flavor of the pecans shines. I am thrilled to have found this pie bakery. Also, I love it that I can stop by and purchase a lot of little pies of different flavors, and know they will all be great, when I take them to a potluck or gathering with friends. I'm not sure what happened with the ordering for this thanksgiving. I was not very pleased having to wait for a pie I ordered almost 2 weeks ago, and then having to bring home a raw pie and bake it myself. Especially after paying $35.00 for a raw peach cobbler pie. My husband and I have often passed by this cute pie shop and have wanted to stop in many times. We are always eager to patronize small businesses. We read many Yelp reviews that gushed about amazing pies and a warm down home reception from the owner. We were looking forward to finally going, and got there as a soon as it opened. We told the owner how thrilled we were to finally come to the shop after reading the glowing reviews on Yelp. Flat affect, no response. We kept engaging him in conversation, but it didn't get any better. It was like pulling teeth to get a response. We were baffled by his reluctance to carry on a conversation because he certainly wasn't busy. We were the only ones in the establishment. We purchased 4 mini, and I mean mini pies at $7.50 a pop. We both left feeling let down by the chilly reception. We thought we'd at least enjoy the pies. The pumpkin was a bit dry, the coconut tasted like lemon with some coconut flakes on the top. If blindfolded, I never would've guessed it was coconut. I didn't get it. Sadly, my hopes were high with the coconut pie, since I purchased 2 of them. Spendy decision. We haven't tried the key lime yet, but are in no hurry. 2 stars for the beautiful shop, but no repeat customers here. read more
