I'm not really sure whether the swarm of flies in Bakery Nouveau came before or after the West Seattle residents who I believe all came descending from way beyond down under Shit Avenue. I would not be shocked to discover the latter because all flies can't help but be attracted to organic filth that is sullied underwear, jam-filled toenails, and chaffed up, disdainful personalities dressed in outdoors Columbia gear that obviously do wonders for their foul body odor. People swear up and down the Washington coastline that their pastries, the twice-baked almond croissant to be specific, are objects of affection that leave you wanting to stroke yourself after consumption, but I couldn't get past the fact that I felt like I was dropped right on some lice-ridden, indie hair. Everybody gets crammed in here to the point you're rubbing elbows with each other while you're sharing tables. The almond croissants, along with many others that rest on the bottom shelf, are haphazardly dropped and piled on top of each other like some unappetizing doggy pile. I didn't find anything in their display cases that looked tempting. In my opinion, I think the French Bakery does the almond croissant better because after eating it, I didn't have grease dripping out of my eye sockets. Plus, the French Bakery doesn't smell like twice-baked farts. Rome wasn't built in one night but I believe that Bakery Nouveau may have been. The process of ordering and paying is laughable and unnecessarily complicated. You wait in the same line regardless of whether you want a hot, savory pastry like pizza or a sandwich, baked goods, or coffee. We ordered a pizza and two coffees at first. The slice of pizza came out immediately and ended up progressively getting colder before we received both of our coffees (coffees that came out 5 minutes apart, mind you). As well, prior to leaving, I wanted to get an almond croissant to-go. Again, we had to deal with the clusterfuck of a line and crowd. Luckily, my partner sensed my impatience and urgency to peace out that he cut the lines to grab this sacred, butter beacon, which ended up half-eaten. Everything took far too long and I'd expect management to brainstorm a better strategy. I guess with a near perfect rating praising my business, I also wouldn't give a fuck about time or efficiency when I have all of these loyal customers strapped to the skin of my scrotum. To their credit, I enjoyed both my drip coffee and the pizza, or at least the little bite that I had. My drip coffee was the least burnt I have ever had. I was impressed by this simple cup of coffee from beginning to end. The rectangular-shaped pizza had mushrooms and pepperoni, I think, and cooked with a subtle herbal, tomato sauce. It had a perfect amount of cheese melted with bread that was neither too dense nor thick. I enjoyed the homey taste of this pizza as opposed to the likes of Pagliacci's and other chains. This is a place you pump and dump and only when it's convenient. You could do better. read more

The first thing I ever ate at Bakery Nouveau was the Praline Dream cake. Read on: A chocolate mousse with a praline Feulletine mixture (delicate and flaky milk chocolate and praline paste) layered on a chocolate biscuit finished with Gianduja (milk chocolate with hazelnut paste). Now, if your mouth isn't watering I can't tell you why it's not but you need to go there asap. I love Feulletine! Wasn't super impressed with the macarons or the bon bons. Both, as pretty as they were, I've had better. The bread is great, and pizza is alright. The cofffee is pretty dang good, too. My favorite is the twice baked croissant(s) - multiple because I'll eat more than one. and of course the Praline Dream cake. They were 4 people working and nobody seems happy to work here and to want to take my order... one woman started to ask me what i wanted... then when i answered by a question because i need a information before making my choice, she just went away leaving me like this without answering me! Qs: Why did the sweet tooth cross the bridge? A: Because it wanted a Nouveau experience! It's a good story. William Leaman, as captain of the U.S. team beat the French in their own backyard during the 2005 World Cup of Baking. Woo hoo!! But, as a patron of this West Seattle bakery does it matter to you as to who won the gold medal in 2005, if on a daily basis, you are served baked goods that struggle to better those at other top bakeries of the city? Maybe, given their story and the stratospheric Zagat rating (28), I had unrealistic expectations of Bakery Nouveau (BN). I woke up early on a misty morning with extremely poor visibility and was at the bakery by 7 am to sample their famed croissants. But, their pain au chocolat would certainly win no awards from me. It was neither warm nor airy. On the other hand, I will concur with the majority vote that the twice baked almond croissant is excellent. BN's version was surprisingly neither oily nor oversweet, as is normally the case with even competent versions. To sample more from the bakery, I decided to take a chance on their macaron collection and ordered one of each: Chocolate, Raspberry, Pistachio, Café, Passion fruit, Coconut, Caramel, Blood Orange, and Cassis. Honestly, I thought they looked prettier on the website than in real life, and were MUCH smaller than what I expected. At $1.50 each, they were a good deal, but were by no stretch the best in Seattle or even close. The texture was often too chewy (for some) or crumbly (for others). Perplexed by the continued misfires, I left BN taking some pastries back with me. Almost as a sign, the sun broke through the clouds, for the award winning Phoenix cake (pear mousse, 70% chocolate mousse, and caramel mousse with pecan dacquoise and sponge cake) was definitely one of the best cakes I've had lately. Similarly thrilling were the Praline Dream (chocolate mousse with a praline mixture layered on a chocolate biscuit and topped with Gianduja) and the Black Currant Panna Cotta (chocolate and black currant mousse and vanilla bean Panna cotta). Even the Classic Chocolate Cake (with moist chocolate cake, mousse, and glaze) turned out to be superior to any chocolate version I tried in the city. Clearly the talent and creativity behind the pastries is amply manifest, and beyond debate. If it weren't for the pastries, I would've thought that Bakery Nouveau was a continuation of the culture wars and Seattle's response to the French marketing phenomenon of Beaujolais Nouveau, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaujolais_nouveau. Delicious if a bit 'foo-foo' for my down home tastes. I went in with one thing in mind, macarons. They weren't in the case, it was 10am, I started to panic. The girl behind the counter- while attractive as all get out- seemed to be very lackadaisical when telling me they're in the back. Do you not understand my need for cookies? It is strong. I need them now. I asked for one of each, except the mint- and got a plethora of flavors, all very fun but the consistency of the cookie left something to be desired. It was mushy, so perhaps they hadn't set out long enough, because of my greed for them. Came here on my Birthday and it was top notch birthday breakfast. I lived in France for a few years and never had anything quite like the twice baked chocolate croissant and I am not complaining! It is the perfect pastry. Not too sweet, crispy and buttery. It was both out favorites. We luckily arrived right before a line started forming outside the door. The service was prompt. I'm not sure if it's like this all the time, but my only complaint would be the selection seemed small. I was so happy with what we chose that it wasn't a huge deal but it would have been neat to see what else they could offer. Bakery Nouveau is often crowded. In a city like Seattle, with so very many bakeries and coffee shops to choose from, this usually means that they offer something quite wonderful. I've been to Bakery Nouveau several times, once having pizza, picking up a loaf of bread, grabbing a quick coffee. I had managed to avoid the tempting lovelies inside the pastry case, but I finally slipped a few weeks ago. Now I really understand the crowds! While I've always been partial to chocolate croissants (and theirs is definitely a 5-star, the chocolate is mixed throughout and not just a chunk in the middle), what truly stands out is the twice-baked almond croissant. It has a delightful toasty, caramel flavor, with creamy not-too-sweet almond in the middle. I'm hooked! Staff is friendly and move people through the line quite efficiently. What's impeccably crafted at this bakery doesn't stop at the artisan breads, perfectly crusty and delicious though they may be. No, this talented team thinks way outside the breadbox, creating incredible pastries, desserts, sandwiches, quiche, pizza, chocolates, jams, and special seasonal treats to make your mouth water. Leading up to Mardi Gras, this was the hub for Polish paczkis (traditional filled donuts) that were seriously eyes-rolling-back-in-your-head good! If you come here on a weekend morning, prepare for lines stretching out the door and snaking part way down the street. Also, have your eagle eyes on, so you can spot and snag any free seat you can get your hands on once you're inside. There are a couple of small tables outside if you miss out on the limited indoor seating, but if you're there during the pastry rush, you might just have to plan on grabbing your goodies to go. Bakery Nouveau's double baked almond croissant is no joke! It was so big I could only eat half. At $3.85 I thought it was a good price considering the size of the pastry and the quality. I gave the rest to my Mom that afternoon and she loved it. The line was long but my friend who lives in West Seattle said the line wasn't bad compared to what she's seen because it wasn't stretching outside yet. Everything in the glass cases looked good. I'll start this review by saying I very much enjoy the food here and that my experience has more often than not been a good one. Save for the long weekend lines, service has been pretty excellent. For context, I've spent $407.13 at Bakery Nouveau this year, according to my Quickbox My most recent experience was pretty terrible, however. I went in Monday to place an order for 10 sandwiches and 10 cookies for pickup on Tuesday. In a not so pleasant way I was told 48 hours notice was required for pre-orders. When I explained I was only looking to order from the existing pre-prepared menu of sandwiches and cookies, the manager said that would be fine but prepayment was required. No big deal. I ordered and planned for pickup the next day at noon. At noon today, I arrived to no order and a good solid scolding from the manager. She took two opportunities to chastise me actually. She also never bothered to apologize or thank me for my business. After finding the order sheet, she wagged her finger at me and shared that the order wasnt ready and 'this is why we require 48 hours'. Adding insult to injury, as i waited I had to listen to the manager train another apparently knew employee never to accept an order with less than 48 hours notice 'for this very reason'. (Point made. Sorry) My order was hastily pulled together and a few extra brownies added in by the nice woman who assisted me both yesterday and today. I appreciate that. I think it bears mentioning, I could have just as easily walked in today and selected 10 sandwiches and 10 cookies from the case - no problem. I thought the day's notice was a business oriented and thoughtful approach. I'm surprised by the poor service at an otherwise courteous establishment, but more pissed to have been admonished in front of other customers and staff. I made myself walk up Admiral and down California in order to make a calorie deficit for this place... and I am pleased to announce- EVERYONE was RIGHT* I made it in about 3pm on a Sunday... there was a fun bustle going on in the tiny bakery and a few places to sit. The bakery case display was is full affect ,and I was instantly drawn to more than a few items- but sticking with my original research and game plan I ordered a twice baked almond croissant and a macaroon. The lovely young counter girl asked me what flavor I wanted for my macaroon ( I thought they were just diff colors not flavors) and I told her to surprise me. She was not capable of filling this request, and asked again a few minutes later. With her advice I picked out the blood orange macaroon. It was between that and chocolate with salted caramel on top. The twice backed almond croissant was tender, flaky, rich, dense, sweet- but not overwhelmingly so, and perfect. The almonds on top were cooked to the point of caramelizing. My macaroon was unlike anything I have tasted. The were light in the mouth and melted easily. My first time visit choices were wonderful. The prices were approachable. My order was a little over $5. I believe the mini macaroons were $1.25. The space was pleasing, the choices abundant, and the tasty crafted pastries and baked good worth a visit. Bakery Nouveau would be a wonderful desitnation for a breakfast or brunch treat. I, of course, will be back. This is a bakery that makes me not care about the numbers on the scale. Who cares if your pants won't fit; you will have experienced one of the greatest pastries of your entire freakin' life. My first experience here was with their marionberry danish...drool... Normally, the middle of the danish is the part that is the star- not here. No way. Bakery Nouveau won't do that to you; they will make sure you enjoy each and every last bite. I think the way they make their pastries flaky but moist should be a secret protected by Homeland Security. Crisp, but not dry is tough for many good bakeries to attain, but I guess this is why I would call this place great. Their focaccia bread was also delightful; it had a wonderful texture and a great flavor. Sometimes focaccia bread can be a little bit over salted to achieve a decent taste, but no ma'am, not here. The other great thing about this place is the service. I went with a friend who was dairy free (I know, taking a dairy free person to a French bakery is a bit cruel, but I maintain this food would have been worth their pain), and he asked if there was anything that might not have butter. The staff went out of the way to check with bakers to see if there was any treat that he could possibly have (and there was- see I'm not a complete jerk). I am so in love that I just want to shout BAKERY NOUVEAU from the rooftops to let everyone know what a fan I truly am. I have lived across the street from Bakery Nouveau for over a year now and I still struggle with finding the right words to express how lovely this bakery really is - delectable, enticing, heavenly, mouth-watering, orgasmic, scrumptious, titillating - no words do this place justice. First, the service has always been spot-on for me. Even when the line parades down the block, the employees go into assembly line mode and make sure that you are served promptly. Everyone has always been polite to me. One girl even gave me a free pineapple-coconut donut at closing time. I think their goal is to make everyone hyperglycemic. It is really the pastries that will keep you coming back. The secret ingredients are love and crack...lots and lots of crack. I have never been so addicted to pastries in my life. It started off with just one twice baked almond croissant, but that was not enough. I have to keep going back for macaroons, and chocolates, and cakes to get my fix. The only thing that I have ever disliked here was the lavender macaroon and that was just because I felt like I was eating a bar of soap. But I was just pig enough to keep eating it. Here is my must-try list: Twice Baked Almond Croissant: Crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, rolled in powdered sugar, great with a cup of coffee on a cold day. Cassis Macaroon: I flip out for anything cassis flavored - great currant taste with the most interesting texture your mouth will ever experience. Pretty satisfied with all their macaroon flavors, but this is by far my favorite. Kouign Amann: Butter and sugar. Not sure how they make so few ingredients into something that amazing. Phoenix Cake: Very complex flavors - there is a lot going on in this dessert, but it somehow all works. Pistachio Cassis Cake: Super interesting flavor combination! Classic Chocolate Cake: They really know how to make a great chocolate cake. It is a dessert that is so simple and often overlooked, but they make a chocolate cake that you won't soon forget. Croque Monsieur: Don't even get me started on their savory items. I could eat this for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I love their junction croissant, pizzas, and plain ol' bread, but this really takes the cake. LIMONCELLO CAKE: WTF. THIS IS THE BEST THING I HAVE EVER PUT IN MY MOUTH. I have always tried to taste something new each time I go into the bakery and every time I say, "this is the best thing I have had here!", but this honestly is the BEST THING I HAVE EVER HAD. The good, flaky, slightly crispy at the edges good ones that taste like pastry and buttah. I'm a stupid-late bloomer sometimes, and in this case, I really feel like I've been missing out. Last time I went, I got the ham + cheese croissant. YUM. This time I got the BLTA croissant. YUM. Aaaaaaaaaand the pistachio and strawberry dessert croissant. Yup. YUM. Get a baguette to go. After a tasty dinner at Mashiko's my sushi partner in crime and I stopped in here for a sweet little treat to take home. After much deliberation I went with the bread pudding, it was good cold but once I nuked it in the microwave for a few seconds it was OMG heaven, so ooey and gooey and delicious. My friend went with the carrot cake who is a self proclaimed carrot cake connoisseur and she claims theirs rates up there with some of the best. My roommate has also informed me that their cinnamon rolls are a lovely way to start your morning. I love sweets, there's no surprise there - but I've always been a bit hesitant to make the trek all the way out to West Seattle just to wait in a long queue to get a pricey croissant. Luckily for me, a co-worker of mine lives much closer to this place than I do, and as a surprise for my birthday, he picked up a delicious raspberry pistachio cake and half a dozen macarons for me! The cake itself was heavenly, with two light layers of a sweet, sponge-like cake soaked in raspberry juice and speckled with pistachio crumble on top. The bottom layer was more like a wafer, with a white-chocolate coated bottom. This made the cake particularly unique and reminded me vaguely of the "napoleon" cakes that some asian bakeries are well known for. Anyhow, I only had a small slice, but my other co-workers gobbled it up, proclaiming "this is the best cake EVER," so really, I think this place speaks for itself. In regards to the macarons, I admit I am not a huge macaron fan (they're so expensive for what you get, honestly!), however I will say that Bakery Nouveau wins points for innovation and flavour. I had a banana-chocolate one (not my favourite, the banana was overwhelming), a pb&j (the best!), a lavender chocolate (which had more chocolate overtones than lavender), a raspberry chocolate (classic combination, quite good but leaves a cloyingly sweet aftertaste), and lastly, a lavender vanilla (second best of the 6). In summary, if you happen to be in the area, I wouldn't hesitate to stop in, as long as you're patient, that is. This review is for Bakery Nouveau's wedding cakes. WOW! We had the best experience working with Jackie, from the very first interaction over email and throughout the entire process. We had a wedding reception for 400, so it was quite a large order. We decided to go with Bakery Nouveau because we wanted to serve cake that reflected our taste buds. We served two types of cake - a chocolate cake and something inspired by the "Maui Slice", which was a cake we had last year during the holiday season that we had fallen in love with. We were able to order several large sheet cakes and a display cake. The display cake was a two tiered cake, which we had our florist decorate for us. Jackie was wonderful with answering every question I had and providing thorough responses. She always checked in appropriately, was so knowledgeable, kind, professional, and just a joy to work with. One thing to note is that Bakery Nouveau does not deliver, so you will need to arrange for your own pick up. They do, however, provide very thorough instructions for pick-up and make it as easy as possible. We received many compliments on how delicious the cakes were, and we're so happy that it was memorable and delicious! This place has the most amazing pastries I've ever had the pleasure of trying. The service I have received on the other hand is the exact opposite. Its been a while since I've been there because of this. As a customer service employee myself I know how important being friendly is. Not all employees here are rude.Actually I know a few of the ladies and they are super nice. Just one in particular and I have no idea why. When I come in. My friends and I are easy going, make up our minds fast and tip. If a customer fills those qualifications at my establishment I am ecstatic. So why does this bring eye rolls and attitude in this place? This is the first time I have ever stopped frequenting a place with such a great product but, I refuse to spend what my family considers a lot of money for an uncomfortable dining experience. I don't know how to start about this place. It was absolutely amazing. Ordered a bunch of sandwiches, but the one that literally had me saying "This is so good," more than once was the steak, bacon, and bleu cheese sandwich. The meat was cooked perfectly, the bleu cheese flavors meshed perfectly, the bread was fresh and moist, but not soggy. It literally surprised me at how good it was. However, NOTHING can top the chocolate croissant. This is one of the best things I have ever eaten. Again, words fail to describe it. The croissant was baked crispy, but moist and soft in the center. The chocolate wasn't over powering but complemented the buttery, flaky croissant. One of my friends was super full from the steak sandwich and wouldn't try the croissant. We finally forced him to have the last bite. I wish I could have recorded his face. Bakery Nouveau isn't voted the best bakery in Seattle for no reason. As a West Seattle resident, I am so glad I live here. A quick 5 minute drive to the Junction with ample parking in the lot behind the bakery, it is a thrill to wake up in the morning to go grab some pastries. They're most famous for their twice baked croissants and it is always a must to bring at least one home. However, I would like to point out that their savory options are amazing. They don't always have the same thing so hopefully when you go there, something will catch your appetite. My personal favorite so far is the Maple Butter Sausage (or something along those lines). Heat it up (I recommend a quick toast if you have a toaster oven) and enjoy a melting buttery croissant with a sausage packed full of flavor. Something I've learned coming to this bakery almost every weekend is to always try something new. See a pastry you've never heard of? Try it. A seasonal fruit prepared in way you've never of? Try it. Macaroon with a flavor you've never heard of? Try it. An oddly shaped bread with a name you can't pronounce? Try it. It's Bakery Nouveau. Trust them. It'll be good. Sorry west seattle, just because you have one actual bakery doesn't mean that you should all rate it 5 stars. The most overrated place in tha tneighborhood. Ordering is hell. With the layout and way too many items they have, people are asking you to order long before you've seen what you want to order. Plenty of their items are just not good. Instead of making a few things really well, they tend to do an ok job on a mass of food items. Their sandwiches are hit and miss. Skip the bagette unless you're looking to risk dental and jaw work. It's like eating a damn log. The staff are ok, but don't expect that they'll take any criticism. The only thing BN seems to do well is put a bakery into areas that have a lot of people and no competition nearby. Visit Besalu in Ballard to see what a bakary should be. I couldn't even be mad at the woman ahead of me in line. In fact, I was jealous. You see, she was slowly and steadily ordering one or five of just about every single pastry in the case. But even with all the wait time (during which I made up and then changed my mind at least seven times) I was an oaf when it was my turn. My exact words? "Can I please have...wait? What did I decide on? Oh yeah, the banana bread please." Derrr. They must get that a lot. Anyway, the slice was beyond generous and the coffee that went with it was perfectly smooth. This was a really cute bakery right across from the apartment building of the friends we were staying with. We took the advice of pretty much everyone to review this place and tried the twice-baked almond croissant and a cinnamon bun. The croissant was legen... ...wait for it... ...DARY. Simply one of the best pastries to ever grace my tastebuds. It needs no further explanation. The cinnamon bun was also delicious. I'm kicking myself for opting for nearly one of every variety macaroon Bakery Nouveau offered, instead of trying different types of pastries. As I was munching on the different flavors with my girlfriend, I realized that they all ended up tasted pretty similar to me. The individual flavors - be it blueberry, pistachio, or passionfruit - were all too light for me. Some may call the flavors delicate, but I just can't buy that as an excuse. Let the record show that the pistachio was easily my favorite. We also bought up their last croque-monsieur and a standard ham and swiss baguette to take home for dinner back at our hotel. These were good, but I could tell they had been in the display case for a few too many hours by our point of purchase, late in the afternoon. I'd say they should pull the prepared sandwiches if they aren't bought after an hour or two so they're not selling inferior product. The baguette for the ham and swiss was simply too chewy to enjoy fully. It stinks, because I bet the sandwiches are delicious when they are fresh. I still would love to give Bakery Nouveau another try during my next visit north (hopefully soon!). I particularly loved this stretch of California Avenue in West Seattle for being low key and walk-able. Lessons learned! read more

Don't let the deceptively small exterior of the bakery fool you. One step inside and you will be mesmerized by the over abundance of sweet and savory options. After a good two minutes of trying to decide between the French macaroons or a cookie, I decided to get the double baked almond croissant and a cup of coffee. The guilt of unnecessary calories quickly faded from my memory as I savored the last bites of this incredible treat. This was possibly the best almond croissant I have every had. I'm not sure what the double baking offers to a pastry, but from now on this is how I want my croissants prepared. Bakery Nouveau - Bakeries Near Me - Seattle, Washington

If you've been missing good bakeries since moving to the west coast, then you need to go here. As far as I'm concerned, THIS IS THE ONLY BAKERY IN SEATTLE. Anywhere else, they make things with dough, but it's not pastry and most of the time, it's barely even bread. Went to buy a wedding cake, and after going to 5 different places, this was the first place that mentioned the words, "flavor profile" instead of showing me a pretty picture of some bullshit sugar-drowned box-cake with a premium for it being a wedding. For the fact that this place produces the most staggeringly tasty croissants, sandwiches, cakes, cookies, candies, quiches, and effing PIZZA?! - they are extremely reasonably priced. Seriously, $400, produced the best f'n deserts I'd ever had for 70 people, and a year's supply lived in my freezer thereafter. Score. I can't go here without walking out having spent $40 and a grocery bag full of breads, pizza, sandwiches and deserts, which inevitably result in an upset stomach from eating all of its right now! That said, I've been to some other places that claim to be bakeries. They lie. They're not Bakery Nouveau and don't come anywhere close. EAT. read more

I am drooling thinking about the twice baked almond croissant from Bakery Nouveau and crying inside since I can't have another one until I go back to Seattle. It was loaded with an almond filling and had a crispy crust yet chewy bite... even the frangipane croissant from my fave bakery, Tartine in SF, won't do it for me anymore. *waaaaah* Everything sounded amazing so we also brought 3 cakes to go including 2 really dense cakes with caramel, chocolate, and hazelnuts. But my fave was a pistachio napoleon with crispy puff pastry and a light berry cream. I could've spent all day there... I would've loved to try their pizzas and French macarons. This will def be my first stop next time in Seattle. read more
