Truly some of the BEST pizza my husband and I have EVER had (and this is no exaggeration, or small feat)! We found Bakery San Juan set up at the San Juan Island Farmer's Market on Saturday, and followed the adage "buy food from the vendor with the longest line." We scored a delicious set of slices right out of the oven. The crust was consistently crisp in all the right ways, and the various toppings - we had a beautiful mushroom slice, a zucchini and goat cheese slice, and a wonderful tomato and basil slice - were fresh and beautifully seasoned. We were in Friday Harbor on vacation and Yelp became our go to for food recommendations....it didn't steer us wrong. After reading the reviews for the San Juan Bakery, we made a beeline for it on our second day on the island and it did not disappoint. We got three slices of pizza to share - we had them heat them up and slice them in two so we could sample each flavor. That pizza was heavenly. The flavors, that crisp, yet chewy crust. We got the potato, the sausage and the island pepperoni. I recommend them all. So damn good....some of the best pizza I've ever had and definitely the best crust. We also grabbed some chocolate chip pecan cookies for our afternoon boat ride. And they were just like mom's. Sadly they were out of the key lime tarts so many folks have raved about in other reviews. This place is a must visit for your Friday Harbor trip. Heck, take the ferry over just to have some pizza. Take and bake Pizzas are excellent. Haven't tried anything else. Just remember to allot time for defrosting it and heating the oven to 500.

While I think this is the best pizza on the island: best crust, best cheese, I really don't like their spicy sauce. The sauce works well on a cheese or pepperoni pizza, but it really overpowers the mushroom pizza and the artichoke and goat cheese pizzas. All I could taste was spice. I think if they lightened up a bit on the chili flakes it would be pretty close to perfect. I love their fresh baked breads ($7 ea) but their desserts are too dry for my taste. Delicious sandwiches - tried both the turkey and the ham. Stopped in for bakery & coffee both days we were in the island. The chocolate mousse cake was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! My boyfriend's family ordered the 9 inch cake for his 25th birthday and my goodness it was gigantic cake. The mousse paired perfectly with the cake layers and the outside layer gave the cake a heavenly, chocolatey, light finish to each and every bite. This is a good as it gets in Friday Harbor for pizza (whole or by the slice), tarts, brownies, carrot cake and some breads. I asked what made the pizza crust the perfect mix of chewy, crisp, and tender: lots of love a great ingredients, she began, and then added we mix three kinds of flour (white, whole wheat, and rye) and use a special wild yeast. It's tough finding a crust this good anywhere in Seattle. The baguette-like loaf was hand made and delicious. I asked why they were closed on the weekends and she said that they needed to have lives too. I felt like I was in the Old World, both for quality and values. Can't wait to get back. read more

This bakery is located a bit further from Friday Harbor. The bakery isn't too large and had a lot of different breads and loaves available. There was also a selection of sweets such as cookies and key lime pie. Surprisingly they also had pizza offerings as well. Since I stopped in the afternoon, I only tried their key lime pie and a slice of their pizza. Both were delicious. The pizza slice was huge and had a thin crispy crust. read more

Better customer service than pizza. After being on the island for a few days and receiving plentiful good feedback about this place, we wanted to give it a try. We drove into Friday Harbor after an afternoon of activities just 8 minutes before they closed. We gave them a call, assuming it would be too late to order a pizza. Apparently it was not, and they were glad to whip up something for us. Being from the Chicagoland area, I have a strong pizza-bias engrained in my taste buds. However, I feel like I would say the pizza was nothing to write home about had I been from anywhere else... It was just okay; nothing I would need to come back to on a second visit here. The crust was spongy soft; the cheese was overly strong in flavor; and the sauce was barely there! I'm not saying they serve bad pizza, but its not my type of pizza. I will hand it to them, though: my hubs enjoyed it, complimented the sauce, and reasoned it was better than the pizza place we went the night before. Nice people. Love the pizza and the turkey tarragon sandwich. Don't like the two young women who recently started working there and apparently believe that politeness and customer service are beneath them. This place is expanding in a big way and their product suggests they will be successful. This is a totally winning and delicious bakery one would be happy to stumble upon in Seattle or Portland. It has the local but tourist-welcoming feel of Cow Girl Creamery in Marin. Fabulous Key Lime Pie, a variety of excellent creative pizzas by the slice, great breads, cookies, muffins. Super nice and friendly staff. This place is an island gem! The BEST croissants anywhere, incredible pizza for lunch and they have the most authentic Key Lime Pie/tart. The pizza slice they serve is really two slices, so the price (they're about $6) is for a good portion. Perfect for lunch. I love the artichoke pizza, the mushroom pizza, and the one topped with lemon arugula salad. They're nice and crispy and really thin-crust. Really fresh. The croissants are out of this world. I had been getting the ham and cheese one for a while because it was so good that every time I went to the bakery I couldn't bring myself to try anything else because the ham and cheese was just that good. But I recently tried the chocolate one for the first time and it was perfection. I am extremely picky about my pain au chocolate. I hate it when the chocolate is really hard, or when there isn't enough chocolate (or too much chocolate). This one is the Goldilocks version -- JUST RIGHT! Soft almost melted chocolate, and it's very high-quality (rich and decadent, slightly bitter but perfectly sweet), tucked inside a flaky-fluffy croissant. Now I know how good it is, so next time I visit I'll order just depending on my preference for savory vs. sweet that day, knowing that either choice will be the bomb! Friendly people here, too. Amazing find in the middle of nowhere on San Juan Island - I enjoyed the baked goods from here as much as I enjoy the offerings from Tartine, no exaggeration! During our weeklong stay we enjoyed their fresh baked pizzas (they pull these lovelies out of the oven around noon and a line forms out the door immediately - you can get by the slice, and they're on the gourmet-ish side); a fantastic piece of lemon tart; and a beautiful chocolate cake for grandpa's birthday. Everything else looked wonderful too. If you find yourself on San Juan, make a special detour to visit this place - you won't be sorry and you'll probably be back. read more

I have eaten Pizza in every part of the United States, and The pizza here is on my top three list. The other two are a deep dish from Chicago and pizza baked in a coal fired oven in Brooklyn. The crust is so flavorful and the toppings, no matter which ones you get, are amazingly fresh and generously applied. If for no other reason, go there for the pizza. It says they are closed on Saturday, the store may be closed but the pizza people are at the Friday Harbor Farmers Market. Find them, it'll be a little slice of heaven. But, there are many more reasons to visit, starting with the freshly baked breads and finishing with the desserts, or enjoy them the other way around. Having just re-read my review, one would think I own the place, not so, but if they were selling it, I would be first in line to buy, but only if the staff and wonderful bakers were staying. read more

This place is the bomb. Seriously. They have AMAZING pizza. Crunchy chewy crust, well thought out in ingredients, and delicious. Potato, carmelized onions, sausage and delicious cheeses. Even simple pepperoni. Go when its fresh, but second best, is that the local markets sell the frozen pies in the freezer section, and wham bam, out of your oven they are also super delicious! In a 2 week stay on San Juan, we came back twice. This is not a traditional, boring Pizza Hut style pizza - this is the real deal, artisanal quality, excellent toppings, and enjoy with a good glass of wine or craft beer. Their other baked goods were delicious too. We got their sourdough at the Farmer's Market - that is also a "must attend" event. I live in the SF Bay Area, and this bakery would be an easy favorite back home. The co-op next door is also a good shopping stop. Go. You will crave these pizzas. read more

Looking for a place to get a quick bite when we arrived at Friday Harbor. The cashier at the market recommended Bakery San Juan for gourmet pizzas. Small cabin structure at the end of the airport runway with lots of parking. The place is really small, but the atmosphere is friendly. Most of the customers were regulars and were quick to recommend their favorites. We had 3 slices heated to go (they slice it in half so you actually get 2 regular slices). Loved the pizza with mushrooms - you won't find meats on their pizzas! The bakery also offers bread (including challah), pies and cheesecake... will have to go back to try more! read more

Yum, love this bakery, thy even have starter to give away at times. You get what you pay for on the island. Perceived value is the trend however, it costs more for food on the island. get used to it. You will have an easier time if you understand EVERYTHING is shipped in.There is a better chance to have happy service when it is not tourist season. Once you live there you understand the two edged sword of the tourist trade. It can be really hard on the islanders. read more
