Baleen Kitchen is exceptional place to enjoy a high quality meal. You'll get an amazing view while enjoying amazing fine dining with courteous staff. You'll have to valet but they comp some of it. I believe it cost us 5 bucks with tip. I typically would try one of the favorites, but was craving a burger. Luckily the burger was fantastic. Delicious and custom cooked to your desire combined with a side of fries. It'll definitely leave you filled and happy. I also tried the chia pudding and it was amazing.l starter. We were staying at the Portofino hotel and decided to try the restaurant for dinner. Are we ever glad we did! The service from Heidi was impeccable--very helpful and attentive, with always just the right amount of time to enjoy courses. The food was out of this world. I can say the scallops are huge, pillowy, fresh, and prepared with a heavenly sauce. The ribeye was out of this world, as well. We had planned on going to Tony's on the pier the next night, but decided to come back to Baleen instead. The And, we had a fabulous breakfast there, too. The fresh fruit platter was extremely generous and flavorful, and the eggs were clearly fresh and free ranged. The yolks were thick and buttery, with an intense orange color. Just had brunch here with my fella. Love! It was free of tourists even though it was Labor Day weekend! Amazing!! $20 bottomless mimosas, sangria, AND bloody mary's? WHAT!!!!??? The food was amazing. We got the Huevos Rancheros, Pulled Pork Benedict, Breakfast Burrito, and Pain Purdue. Every item was so delicious. I didn't even need any hot sauce. Our server was Sheera, and not only was she super pretty, but she was also incredibly friendly and helpful. She brought us three types of hot sauce!! Mike, the manager, did a table touch, and he was so personable. My fella and I are smitten with him. We love Baleen. We felt right at home, and now I want to go back every week. Excellent experience. my neighbor has been telling me to come here for a while. I'm always skeptical about hotel food as it's mostly mediocre at best NOT the case here At Baleen Kitchen! We started w wine (free glass with yelp check in and entree purchase) & Champagne @ Raw & Rockefeller oysters. These Canadian cold water Fanny Bay (?) were better oysters than I've recently had from the southeast. They were tender and not fishy. They serve them w/ lemon, horseradish ,cocktail sauce & Tabasco , We dined on Snapper w Beur blanc w capers (about a tablespoon too many) artichoke hearts & Yukon purée . The Boyfriend had the Miso Sea Bass. Both portions were a decent portion size. We skipped desert opting for the Maker Mark Apple Bourbon Cocktail. This would also be delicious served slightly warmed in winter. Best advice sip from the straw about mid way through the glass slowly & you will then experience each of the subtle flavors which make this a bourbony -cinnamon-apple- delight , yet not really a sweet drink. Service by Nick was absolutely 5 star! He never said no to any of our requests .He made great suggestions about the food . we'd both like to Welcome you to LA ! This restaurant has the proverbial "potential" to be good or even great. The location is beautiful off the Redondo Beach pier area and a dining area that overlooks the harbor waterfront and boat slips. The decor is nice, interior is spacious and you get a nice feel inside. The service had been sincere but as I've read with other reviews maybe a B+ for effort, but a C for execution. The staff seemed to always be a bit unapologetic. One neighboring table could be overheard discussing a discrepancy with BALENkitchen's Fixe Price offer listed for $35 online and on the actual menu, but the waiter had to explain a price increase by $5 to $40 (odd since its the restaurants duty to correct all advertisements, listings and posting, which could have more easily been remedied by manually writing it on the menu (a simple computer print out sheet which also could have easily been reprinted). The most obvious solution of honoring the $35 price seemed to be an oblivious option, and I think maybe poor customer service / satisfaction move on the restaurant's part... but that wasn't my issue or incident in any case, just something I overheard. The food was "okay" which by Yelp standards is *** three stars. Nothing awe inspiring. The clam chowder was a tad too creamy and bland without much zestiness. The duck carnitas reminds me of how some restaurants prepare BBQ pulled pork or chopped beef sandwiches, by just slathering tangy sauce that dominates over the meat taste. it was okay, but not inspirational. The sea bass was a bit salty, and when it says Miso, I'll say, if you like Japanese styled Miso Black Cod, such as at Asakuma's or Roy's Hawaiian Misoyaki Butterfish, this isn't in the same moist and tender vein. The red snapper was a tad dry and bland, not horrible, but you could quite frankly get an equal or better fish at any of the local fish grill (California, Malibu, Blue Salt, etc.) named eateries for $10-15. Overall, dinner for 3 was $150 after tax and tip, with no drinks nor desert. So, at $50 per person, I can think of a lot better (and cheaper) seafood options in the South Bay. I can't completely criticize the restaurant for a lack of effort, but would feel I'd be doing them a disservice sugar coating a mediocre culinary experience. I hope to see them seek ways to improve, especially since my review is very similar to the experiences of so many others I've read. read more

Management apparently is new - owning a boat near the restaurant makes it super convenient- but no matter how convenient or good the food is. Bad management will trickle down - you will fail ! Bad management will destroy a business - the restaurant was not busy, but I still decided to call and make a reservation- my first attempt went to voice mail so I called back - this time I was greeted by a friendly voice - I told her I wanted a reservation, we have a boat on dock where restaurant is - and she replied oh we're not busy- just grab any open table- (this is how in the past 10 plus years or more we have sat ). Waiting for a server we were angrily greeted by a server who made us feel little and embarrassed- keep in mind there was no one waiting to be seated - we didn't pass a line - it was not busy- she stated she had to go check the guest list - I explained we were told by there own staff on phone to have a seat anywhere - if there was a problem maybe start with your staff - then she had Bianca a "manager" come ? She continues to berate and embarrass us - again it's not busy - but the customers that were there it was uncomfortable. If that wasn't enough they sent the general manager Lindsay - she was very condescending and only offered more lip service - Lindsay asked me what could she do (at this point my beautiful day was ruined) - I said an apology from Bianca - that never happened - I went to the front desk and asked for Lindsay's number and left her a message - don't ask how to fix your management problems and not deliver, yes you can guess no return call. It's a shame Baleen used to be a fun spot - attention owner - you need to look closer at your management team - they will ruin you !!! read more

I went here with my boyfriend's family for a Father's Day brunch because his parents love it there. I wasn't as impressed. Everything is a little pricey for what you get and it's not as nice as I thought it'd be. I got a Bloody Mary for the free welcoming cocktail through the yelp offer. It was a little sour for my taste than usual. The waitress took forever to give it to me too, I was basically done with my meal. It wasn't even that busy of a morning, but we didn't feel attended to at all. We had to ask multiple times for things, only to get them 20 min later. I got the fish and chips which was good, with the Parm fries which were also pretty good. However still not worth $16. My boyfriend got the burger and he thought it was okay. My boyfriends mom LOVES their lobster Mac and cheese. So I'd say if you go - get that. I like that there's free parking! That's a plus. read more

I've lived in the South Bay for nearly 10 years and strangely enough have never eaten at Baleen Kitchen. My wife and I finally went and as we now live only a short walk away. The location is fantastic as it's right in the marina. The restaurant itself is really nice & we loved the overall decor. I ordered the skirt steak (pictured) and my wife got the sea bass (pictured). Overall the food was good, but it definitely didn't blow us away. This isn't even a negative review as we had a great time and enjoyed our meal, it just wasn't something we'd be race back to try again. Looking forward to a possible menu change in the summer and we'll be back for that patio, view, drinks, atmosphere. read more

Very cute restaurant next to Portofino Hotel right on the harbor in Redondo Beach. Had an incredible dinner here which included their filet. They also provide in room dining for the hotel which was spectacular, it took a little while to actually make it to the room but was well worth the wait. Five stars !!! read more

We ordered the cornmeal pancakes which were supposed to have marscapone and a blueberry butter. The picture shows this amazing 3 stack of pancakes topped with 4 or 5 nice strawberries and of course a dollop of mascspone. Ours arrived with 2 very small pancakes, one piqued, unripe strawberry and NO marscapone. I tried for about 15 min. -20 minutes to get through to the restaurant to ask for a serving of marscapone. When I finally got thru the pancakes were cold, and they lied to me and told me the marscapone was mixed IN the pancakes. This was just ridiculous. We had ordered , the night before, a hamburger which was very good. However, what they served us for breakfast was really a joke. While I understand that photos are always exceptionally perfect, you would think that whomever is running the kitchen would never let a plate of food like we received for breakfast leave their kitchen. The problem is this. There is nowhere to eat except at this place. Everything else requires you get i. Your car and drive to eat elsewhere. There are several nice eateries not to far away. If you do end up eating or ordering from the BALEEN kitchen, my advice is you ignore the photos and pray. read more

Went to Baleen Sunday evening, about 6:00 for dinner with some friends. We were seated, the rest of our party arrived, and we waited. And we waited. Oh, did I mention we waited? The restaurant was not busy; as a matter of fact there were only about a dozen tables seated, combining both upstairs and downstairs. After about 20 minutes, our very friendly waiter arrived. We ordered some drinks and 2 appetizers, and we waited. And we waited. 30 minutes later, our drinks arrived, not our apps. 30 minutes after that, our apps arrived and the waiter deigned to take our order. Some of the food (2 out of 5 meals) got there about 25 minutes later; the rest came about 15 minutes after that. All told, it took well over 2 hours to have a casual meal and one drink. My companion and I left before the others could order dessert. The sun was out when we arrived. When we left, the sun was fully set and someone neglected to turn up the lights inside, so we sat there in near dark for at least 15 more minutes. I spoke to the waiter and asked what the issue was; the service was beyond slow. He was offended and snarkily responded that he was getting the rest of our food to our table. So, my review of Baleen - the food is okay, not great but certainly not bad. Prices are on the high side and portions are not generous. But the service - the SERVICE - the worst I've had to sit through in a long time. Not what you expect from a restaurant attached to a Noble House hotel property. Pre-Covid, my friends and I used to frequent Happy Hours at Baleen regularly. We will not be returning. read more

I left unsatisfied. Two of us came here for happy hour, which runs M-F, 3-6pm. We ordered oysters, parmesan truffle fries, ahi tuna tacos, sliders, calamari, beer, moscow mule, and a bottle of Prosecco. Oysters: It's $2.50 each or $1 each if you buy a bottle of Prosecco (we did the latter, but ended up the deal wasn't worth it as the Prosecco was $44). The oysters took a long time to come. They are usually the first to come out at any restaurant, but these weren't. We had to have the waiter check on them. When they finally arrived, they were not thoroughly cleaned. There was still salt water and a lot of chips from the shell. It was unpleasant to eat as every bite, I had to spit out pieces of shell. Parmesan truffle fries: good and crispy, but a tiny portion for the $5 price tag. It was about a mug-worth of fries. Ahi tuna tacos: these were delicious, but each taco was only two bites. It was $6 EACH. Sliders: these were my favorite from the night in terms of food. $4 per slider and it came with bacon, guacamole, cheese, tomatoes and lettuce. Not horribly priced for the size and taste. Calamari: I enjoyed the crunchiness of the batter, but eating them alone was bland. You'd have to use the tomato sauce that it came with. Pretty decent portion for $5 (although I saw other people order it, and theirs were tiny). Drinks were good. The moscow mule is on tap and was delicious. I liked the ginger beer they used. The service was a mess. First there was only one server for the whole bar area, so she was all over the place. It was not entirely her fault. About an hour into our meal, another guy introduced himself as our server. However, 10 minutes later, he said his shift was over. I'm not sure where the disconnect was, but they should've just left us with the first lady, as the guy never helped us at all. Multiple times, they forgot drinks, or to put in our order of food. They had to check on our order too many times. As I said, I left unsatisfied. It wasn't a fulfilling meal, and I'd rather spend my $120 somewhere else (yes $120 for 2 people at HH!)!! I wouldn't have enjoyed it even if I spent $40 for 2 people. I wouldn't recommend coming here for happy hour. I can't say much about dinner or brunch though. read more

While staying at the Portofino I enjoyed the restaurant food twice. Both times I ordered the Brussel sprouts. They were delicious. I also had the Salmon. It was cooked perfectly.
