Came here for a wedding party as well as for brunch the next day and loved the food here. They did Buffet style for the wedding party and my favorite was the tomato soup. We visited BaleenKitchen for our anniversary night dinner. It was a very busy night with crowds from multiple weddings and a celebration of life. The restaurant was hoppin' and really loud. In fact, a little too loud. The glass windows and wood floors are great for looks and ambiance ...and a great view, but not so easy on the ears on a romantic night. We requested to be moved to a quieter place and the hostess happily moved us outside. This table had a nice view of the marina and they turned on the heaters for us, which made everything great on this chilly night. Our waitress was Greer and I am not exaggerating when I tell you that she kicked A55! We felt bad because she had to run from inside to outside to take care of us (we were the only ones eating outside on this night), but she handled it like a champ and always with a smile! ..and no, I don't know Greer, she did not pay me for this review - lol! Greer made some excellent food suggestions, checked on our special kitchen needs and was on the ball. Although we had some long wait times, Greer was always apologetic and kind and because of this, we really didn't mind the waits at all. When our special order arrived very wrong, Greer literally ran back to the kitchen and had the kitchen remake it and back on our table in record time. The food here was very high quality and with a staff this kind and accommodating, we would certainly return here and would absolutely recommend BaleenKitchen to friends and family. My friend and I wanted to do brunch at a place with a view of the marina, and BALEEENKitchen turned out to be just the ticket :-) We were seated without a wait next to a window, and we got to enjoy a lovely view while we sipped our triple-shot lattes and contemplated the menu. Tip: The restaurant has gender-neutral bathrooms, so the wait for men and women (when there is one) is equal :-) I went with for their signature Huevos Redondos (La Bahn eggs over easy, on a bed of round tortilla that was also sitting on a bed of a really delicious mixture of chorizo, black beans, and cheese) - it was both beautifully presented and exceptionally tasty. The food here is really good. I have yet to have a bad dish. We've had breakfast here twice, brought to the room (we stayed at the Portofino Hotel) and dinner once at the restaurant. I will say that it is very pricey, so it's not even moderately priced in my opinion. Still, the restaurant has a beautiful ambience and they have good service. Therefore, we don't come here all the time so when we do, we really enjoy it and so I can't complain. It is right by the Portofino Hotel and Marina in Redondo Beach, and this is our favorite hotel when we come to Redondo Beach. The whole area is just gorgeous. We had the peachy drink, it was so good that we we went for a second round. We shared the burrata which was so delicious, I wish they could serve more bread. I had the Miso cod and my friend the swordfish, both were so delicious. My cod was so exquisite that I devoured it all and wanted to leak my plate. I called Baleen about 10 min before arriving to ask if there's a thanksgiving dinner and a wait. I was told there was one without a wait. When we arrived, my husband went in to ask about the dinner and the wait. The GM was so incredibly rude to him. He not only told him there was a one hour wait despite us calling first but half the tables were EMPTY. My husband pointed out the empty tables and mentioned that we just called. The GM very curtly told him the tables suddenly filled up and they expected 250 people, and "Well it is thanksgiving so we will need one hour." When my husband asked about the menu for allergens because our daughter has many allergies, the GM cut him off and said, "Sorry we can't serve you because it's a fixed menu." At that point my husband had it and asked for the manager because he was so rude and of course he was the GM. My husband now pissed finally told him their service sucked, so the GM sarcastically responded, "Yeah and you've been a great customer." I'm actually gobsmacked. The first thought of course was, was he white and was he racist. Bc the whole "we can't serve you" bit sounds extremely suspect. Where have we heard that before? I've never been at a restaurant that has used such language to communicate their menu wouldn't ensure our child's safety. If anything they are profusely apologetic if they can't. This reeked of arrogance and zero care for patronage. We instead went to Kincaid's, which I highly recommend. Beautiful location, wonderful hosts, and accommodating attitudes. We were visiting from North Carolina and had brunch at BALEENkitchen. Immediately we noticed the menu had a great variety and unique dishes. Each dish we had demonstrated a story that Chef Hung created. Flavors that in my head wouldn't go together, ended up being delicious and having so many notes. Chef Hung has a way of balancing dishes with flavor unlike anywhere else. I had no idea flavors like that could exist in a steak. It was unreal. And again, the Chia Pudding, as simple as it may seem, it's prepared in a fashion that when tasting, leaves you speechless. Many people visit very special restaurants to be transported, and are constantly let down. Chef Hung truly delivers, in spades. You taste the passion in every dish. The fresh and locally sourced ingredients really come through in a journey of flavors that are unmatched, right along with the amazing view of the marina and great service. I have to say, I'm so disappointed... I have come to this restaurant a few times for dinner and it was nice. The ambience was very pleasant. However, I just had Easter brunch and it was absolutely horrific. The food tasted like they just picked it up from the grocery store and threw it on a platter.. I felt like I was eating at a school cafeteria. I also feel they were very misleading in their advertising for Sunday brunch. When I looked at the Sunday brunch, they didn't say anything about a per plate fee. When I made the reservations, I selected this location because I wanted to have the normal menu per what I saw listed. However, we arrived to find $75 per plate fee. The quality of food was so low that it was outrageous for them to ask that. The staff did not come regularly to pick up your plates. They just let them pile up on the table. The whole situation felt like they were trying to be a high-end restaurant for Easter brunch and they couldn't get it together, but charge $75 per person. I felt really embarrassed because we told our guest that this place was good and they should enjoy the food. $350 later everyone is still hungry because they didn't want to eat the food. Sat right away with a nice view. Server was polite and informative however she forgot our wine. We had to remind her and then wait another 10mins before she showed back up with it. When we finally did get our food, she brought my wife the wrong dish. She apologized and and told her she could keep the dish while she puts in the correct order. Where do I even begin? As someone who has worked in the industry for 20 years underwhelmed is the nicest word I would use to describe our experience. We had a reservation of a group of 7 for my mother's birthday celebration. We started in the lounge not much to say about that besides our server promptly telling us no more happy hour when not one of us asked for anything but that we were ready to go to our table which caught me very off guard. Once we arrived to the table the torture began, pretty sure our server forgot we were out there saw her probably 4 times in the next 3 hours! We ordered when we could find her, the truffle fries, tuna tacos, rib eye, lobster Mac and cheese, rib eye, short rib tagliatelle, Jidori chicken, shrimp tacos, wasabi mashed potatoes. For how much each item on the menu cost I was flabbergasted at the quality of the food bottom of the Sysco tier that's for sure. Overall consensus the truffle fries and wasabi mashed potatoes were the most edible. The chicken was was tasted like inedible rubber masked in a overly rich gravy, the lobster was beyond fishy on the Mac n cheese, the tagliatelle lacked any flavor whatsoever, the rib eye I've had better at sizzler, I can continue but will spare you. Overall for how much the bill was I was extremely disappointed and felt robbed almost. For such a beautiful venue and space they are really dropping the ball here. What could be amazing is ran like a camp food hall with a bunch of children who seem to be more into having fun than paying attention to guests paying a pretty penny.
