As a local, this is one of our favorite go to and enjoy staying at the hotel for a staycation. For Thanksgiving this year, a relative spent the night so we met up at Baleen for breakfast the next day. The food and service was good. Can't say the same for their coffee, which was served in paper cups as they were out of mugs. What ruined it was that in the middle of breakfast, the General Manager and a waiter started resetting nearby tables for a large party. As it was loud and disruptive, when asked if they can pick up tables and chairs instead of dragging them on the tile floor, the GM sarcastically said, "we can do whatever you want." It made for an unpleasant experience. Not a response you would expect from top management. (And shortly thereafter he started resetting another table as loudly as the first time). What a disappointment, so glad our servers were nothing like that GM. read more

Food was excellent. Legit good for a place this nice with an ambience. One of the best I have had in the South Bay. 5 stars. Service by our waitress was extremely poor. Took forever to come to table and then told us 45 minutes later there was a "miscommunication between her ordering tablet and kitchen" so food would be late. Yeah right. She was new and so completely forgot our order. I know this because others behind us who came much later than us got their orders. Very frustrating as we specifically told her our toddler is rambunctious and we need her food to come pronto. Most restaurants get the kids their food quickly anyway. She didn't apologize and all the food came at the same time, at which time our toddler was already full of the snacks we had to feed her and completely out of control. Forgot our coffee and Bloody Mary order too. Epic disaster service. I professionally told her we were disappointed and she took 10% off the bill but I still gave her a decent tip because I felt bad and I've relied on tips before so I get it. BALEEN needs to do a way better job hiring servers or training them. I never expected to have a life changing experience tonight and yet it happened. Let me start off by saying I have been all over the world and to many restaurants from end of the food spectrum to the other and I haven't had something this incredibly world class amazing in a long time. What changed my life tonight was a steak and not just any steak. It was a ribeye, and that happened to be perfect in every way from the perfect char on the surface to the medium rare inside and the angle at which it was cut and the perfect thickness of each slice and the right amount of fat in the trim. The first bite melted in my mouth and took me to a happy place. I believe this was one of the best steaks I have had in years. And I want to say even the broccolini accompaniment was perfect too, just the right tenderness and crunch wilted just right and the pressed fingerling potatoes too. I had to know who was responsible for this life changing dinner, so I asked to please meet the Chef. After a bit the Chef came to our table and introduced himself. I could tell by talking with him he truly cared about making great food and he explained where he sources everything from local farms. He also told me the Ribeye was a Prime cut and it really showed. The Chef's name is Hung Quan (Executive Chef) and trust me when I say he is going to do amazing things! I also want to give a shout out to our server Niccola who was also amazing in every way! For the first time in a while have I been this excited about a restaurant and a meal. I will be back here soon for another one these world class steaks and by the way it was only $42 dollars for prime cut Ribeye cooked and done perfectly with great sides! This spot lies right in the heart of the historic Cannonball Run, that every car enthusiast will love to see. The food is to die for also! What a hidden gem! Stumbled upon this place cruising Redondo for something different to eat. Different menus depending on when you visit but we got to pick from the brunch menu. Perfect for our wedding reception lunch! My wife and I did a small 35 person wedding on the tail end of the pandemic and we chose Baleen as our spot. The space was perfect. The open windows allowed for great air circulation, the space was entirely ours, separated from the bar area by curtains. We got so many compliments from friends and family on the space and how fun and non-traditional a reception lunch was as opposed to a dinner/dancing/speeches etc. We worked with Rain Villanueva who was a complete and utter pleasure. He fielded every email leading up to the event to make sure we were satisfied and set with our vendors. We had our wedding cake delivered to Baleen the day before the wedding and they received it AND stored it in the refrigerator for us. They even opened their doors early so we could decorate our space hours before we went to get married so by the time we returned, all we had to do was enjoy the space. The staff and food at the restaurant couldn't have been any better in any other situation. It was beyond my expectations on how the space looked and felt the day of our wedding and I couldn't recommend it more. read more

Absolutely loved the decor and atmosphere of this restaurant! It's tucked away on a small peninsula where the Portofino hotel is located, so it's surrounded by the beautiful marina and bay. Great views of the sunset from here and lots of window seats! Had a large party here and they were able to accommodate us all. We had a few yummy appetizers, my favorite was the mushroom flatbread and truffle fries. The starter bread was a bit too hard and bland for my taste. For my entree, I ordered their scallops ($30). It came with 3 juicy large, seared scallops with bits of fingerling potato, mushrooms, and this good sauce. For the price I wish I had gotten more scallops (it was a small portion and I probably wouldn't have been full without the appetizers). But overall the taste was really good! While the chef and food are great, the location/ambiance lovely, and really good service depending on who you get, this place has been poorly managed for years. It is always filthy and they keep the air-conditioning on full blast. You have to bundle up with ski hats and coats - even when the weather is nice! I have had to wipe down my own table several times, the furniture is stained and has debris, and the floor has crayons and food - and not just from the table before. Truly sad as I want to love this place but it needs serious help. Even when you ask for the air-conditioning to be turned down, they either come up with an excuse or say they will try and don't do anything. The worst management ever! read more
