You've gotten this far (you've found an Indonesian restaurant in a random tourist area in a random American city), so you probably already know where this going. I really wanted to like this place but, deep down, I knew what was coming. It's just so hard to find Indonesian food, even in the more ethnically diverse reaches of the American continent. San Jose has a little market that sells Indonesian goods and will cook some dishes if you're willing to wait long enough for them to do so. West LA has its tiny Indonesian cafe. And I've come across other places, usually randomly, surrounding other urban centers, but they're often gone before I can go again or even recommend them. For whatever reason, Malay and Singaporean food is easier to find but, Indonesian, it seems, is a cuisine that even the most savvy American diner has yet to appreciate. I tasted the fried rice first. It was just mostly soy sauce (too much of it). Then we had gotten chicken satay for our kid. He ate it up, but I'm not sure how, because it was so rubbery and covered in an oily peanut sauce. It was also not typical satay - strips of chicken - but rather chicken chunks that were skewered. Mine came out and had lots of wrong to it, very much climaxing in a pinkish beef rendang that I felt was at least trying to resemble the versions I've had before. It was $12 and served in a styrofoam container. But you're in Old Sacramento. Are you going to do a lot better? Well, yes, but this is at least something more interesting than fish and chips next door, or some greasy Mexican place. Maybe we got the wrong dishes. They made a big deal about their fried chicken. I've had Indonesian fried chicken, and I think it rivals the Japanese version, if not bests it. But I was in the mood for a rice dish. And maybe that was what was wrong. The people were very friendly. I don't take a lot of pleasure in critiquing the food, but I don't want anyone else to come in with their hopes held high. I can't recommend an alternative because there is none. I've heard of Indo Cafe over the years and finally got to go - only to discover their name changed to Bali Kitchen. They have a pretty big menu and being a first-timer it was a bit overwhelming to decide what to get. I got the shrimp kwetiau and it reminded me of drunken noodles. The people who work here are just so nice it makes me want to come back regardless of the food, but luckily it's really good! During a stop at the cafe I was in the mood for soup. My sister ordered some noodle dish (she always orders noodles), my boyfriend got teriyaki over noodles and the kid picked chicken satay (an appetizer, but that's what he likes). We're the kind of family that likes to sample each others plates to see which we like best. So as the adorable staff brought out our dishes we took little nibbles. The noodle dishes were really good, but I was enjoying my soup the most. It had a nice sesame flavor and the meatballs weren't the rubbery kind you get at pho shops, but more soft and gave the soup a comforting home cooked feel. My son's dish came out last and when it did we all stopped mid-bite, mid-chat, mid-slurp and stared at it. I know each of us was thinking the same thing, "I should have got that! Luckily he's a light eater and there will be leftovers.... mwahahaha." Needless to say that when he devoured a skewer and declared he was finished the vultures swooped in and cleaned his plate. Mmm-mm! If you're in Old Sacramento and don't feel up to fish, burgers, or hot dogs I would suggest Indo Cafe. Authentic cheap and good Indonesian food at the tourist traps filled Old Sacramento? Yes! This little cafe is a gem. Nothing fancy just a tiny hole in the wall shop ran by Indonesian family. If you want real Indonesian food make sure you ask for the authentic menu (yellow color with no picture). I would avoid ordering from the generic tourist menu unless you really want some teriyaki beef or sweet and sour chicken. Indonesian cuisine glossary of the day (Courtesy of my Singaporean friend) Nasi - Rice Mie (or Mi) - Noodle So I tried their Nasi Uduk and Nasi Rames. Both of these are rice dishes. Nasi Uduk is coconut rice with scrambled eggs, spicy beef, tempeh (some soy product) and fried anchovy. Kinda similar to the Korean bibimbap in a way. Nasi Rames is steamed rice with beef stew, spicy tempeh, lodeh (vegetables), boiled egg and satay on the side (your choice of either beef or chicken). The steamed rice was a bit dry. The coconut rice was more tasty. I like the mixture of assorted vegetables and all the random stuff on the plate. The beef stew and the spicy beef could be more tender though. The satay (I had the beef version) was too tough. Food is decent for the price. Overall around 3-3.5 stars quality. Reasonably priced good food is hard to come by in this area. They also sell various Indonesian baked goods and pastries you can pick up to go. read more

I just happened to be in Sacramento for work-related stuff, so I turned to yelp to look for a place to have lunch. Search gave me Indo Cafe. I checked out their website and found that their menu is very unimpressive (http://www.indocafe-ca.com/). Mostly consists of a weird mix of Thai and Chinese food and a bit of Indonesian. But since I will always miss Indo food, I decided to go for it anyway. As soon as I went near the restaurant, the first thing I noticed is a group of Indonesian young'uns hanging out on the patio area. So that means the owner must be from indonesia and the food must be somewhat authentic. The inside is super tiny. Only about 6 small tables, and a couple glass counters with a few selection of pastries and snacks. Sat down, and was given the same menu I saw on the website. When I finally ordered though, the guy noticed that I am from Indonesia and offered me the secret menu. There's a secret menu!! Ask for it if you either (1) are an Indonesian person, (2) understand Bahasa Indonesia, or (3) are adventurous enough to try (real) Indonesian cuisine. Yes, there's more to this tiny place than fucking teriyaki chicken over rice. Teriyaki's not even indonesian. Get one of the rice plates. You can't go wrong with Indonesian rice plates. I consider myself quite the expert in southeast Asian food. I grew up eating Indonesian food, and was ELATED to find Indo Cafe in Sacramento. We got to the counter and remembered to ask for the Indonesian menu (good thing I read that on Yelp!). They had EVERYTHING I love, which made it difficult to pick. Finally, I decided on Nasi Kuning, which is yellow rice with beef rendang (Indonesian curry), ikan bilis (peanuts with small deep fried anchovies), fried egg, and fried tempeh (I'm not sure what it is exactly, but it type of grain). I also ordered gado gado, which is cabbage, bean sprouts, tofu and shrimp crackers with peanut sauce. YUM!!!! Everything tasted AUTHENTIC. That's probably really difficult to do when your restaurant is in Sacramento and you're not able to get the fresh spices you need. The owner is super friendly and even offered to make me this special Indonesian chili sauce to go with the meal. That made me so happy! My friend who is new to Indonesian food really enjoyed everything. The rice was really incredible! So was the gado gado's peanut sauce, it was exactly how I remembered it! We forgot the name of this place and called it Noodles Lots of Flavor for the longest time, that's because their noodles has lots of flavors :) My favorite is the spicy BBQ chicken. I like it because it's actually spicy, not medium spicy but spicy with a kick! They give you two large chicken breasts covered in spices and sauce over rice. Let the rice soak up the sauce from the chicken....my-oh-my, so delicious! The noodles are also really good, lots of flavors. Portions are large and I can never finish my dish. After I saw the Fung Brothers Asian Noodle Soup 2 video, I was on a mission to find me some Laksa!! After searching high and low on Yelp, it turned out Indo Cafe is one of the few that serve up this coo coo co co nut goodness. I use to live within a few miles of Old Sac, and Indo Cafe was sitting under my nose for years! The Laksa did not disappoint! It was spicy and creamy coconutty and downright delicious. My only complaint is that I needed MOAR. I could've easily eaten two bowls of this, so I'm hoping some day they will serve up an XL bowl for us noodle maniacs. My wife tried the Nasi Uduk and that coconut rice was divine. I go COO COO FOR CO CO NUT. Sitting outside in the spring is very nice. There's a little chill from the breeze that the hot soup will totally counteract. I like how casual the ordering process is (A.K.A. no tip required, but nice to give). He apologized profusely and said that this has never happened before (which I don't believe, but I am forgiving). He said we could come back and receive a full refund, if we wanted to come back. He mentioned being distraught when the orders were messed up, he didn't even think go offer us a discount. I appreciate him responding and doing all the things I'd hope he'd do. Today, we were eating at the original place we tried to go to when we ended up here at Indo Cafe. My co-worker went and asked for our refund and he gave us $50 in cash to cover all the meals and drinks we ordered. He apologized again and again. If you haven't had Indonesian food (if you're from Sac you probably haven't), I highly suggest coming out to Indo Cafe and giving it a try. When coming here with my Indo friends, I didn't know what to expect. If you want to compare to other foods, I would say it a combination of Indian, Thai, and Chinese but the only way to really describe it is just Indonesian. The first time I came, I got the Nasi Kuning. It comes with spicy beef, scrambled eggs, spicy tempeh, and fried anchovies with peanuts over tumeric rice. There are so many flavors combined that when you put them all together, it just feels like an explosion in your mouth. The tumeric gives the rice its yellow color and has a distinct curry like taste. Some of the parts of the dish might be a little spicy, so just a heads up. On a different day I tried the Nasi Goreng. In concept, its pretty similar to most fried rices that you have, but they use medium grain rice which gives it a fuller texture. For the soy sauce they use kecap manis which is Indonesian Soy Sauce. It has really sweet and savoy taste compared to other soy sauces. The dish was pretty delicious, but it was flavored a little too much. The people here are really nice and helpful. It might be a little off putting to deal with finding and paying for parking in Old Sacramento, but it is worth coming here. I came here once to get food to go, and I was in and out in 5 minutes. I feel like the food is made better when you order it "for here", but the 15 min drive/walk to work might have affected the food quality. If you love good soups, try the Laksa!!!!! I didn't know what to expect. Thurs area is full of tourists and random eateries. This one seemed a bit off the beaten path with regards to food (Indonesian), but I wanted soup and it sounded perfect. My roommate and I came here for lunch for the first time today. We were curious to try the food here since we have never encountered Indonesian cuisine in Sacramento. The service here was amazing. They were really nice and kept coming over to refill our waters and ask how the food tasted, even though we were sitting at one of the picnic-style tables outside. What a pleasant find! My friends and I were sightseeing the Old Sacramento and we stumbled upon this little Indonesian Restaurant. Three of us are Indonesians so we definitely felt drawn to enter the restaurant to check it out! We ordered 1 Risoles, 1 Lemper and 1 cendol and shared since we just had lunch nearby and weren't hungry. I must admit that the look of the Risoles and Lemper from the transparent glass display was not convincing. But hey, don't judge a book by its cover! As I took my first bite at the risoles (crepe filled with chicken, carrots, pot-pie like filling), I was pleasantly surprised by the authentic flavor. Same with the lemper (sticky rice filled with chicken) and the cendol (green tapioca jelly drink with coconut milk and palm sugar syrup). I came here with a couple of friends. You'd expect that a tourist stop in Old Town would be awful, but the people here seem to love preparing their food, and it's well-made, fresh, and tasty. For those reviews that diss it on authenticity, just the fact that it is described as a "fusion" restaurant should shut that down. We had fish, chicken kabobs, and fruit drinks. Nothing overcooked or undercooked, everything with clear flavors and careful preparation. It is a tiny place, and many folks come in just to get a sweet drink. There are 4 or 5 tables. It has a family feel, and is clearly part of a community, not just a chain. If you work near here, make it your regular place. If you are a tourist, take a risk and order a bit more than you might. It's a small business run by the really friendly Caucasian husband who takes your orders at the counter and brings your meal to you and his Asian wife who does the cooking. He went out for a walk and she found me reading an article about the owner, which was not her. (Owners are Jim and Tessa Scaief) She told me they're the 3rd owners of the cafe' and I was reading the news article about the original owners from the 1990's. Hubby and I decided to patronize a local Old Town small business. He liked his Thai curry chicken which came with a hefty serving of rice. I tried the chicken fried rice which wasn't bad, had square slices of chicken in it. I particularly liked their Thai iced tea. The place is tiny with only about 4 tables crowded together. If you prefer, there are community wooden picnic-type tables outside to enjoy the warm weather. I'm gonna start with saying I'm Indonesian and grew up in Jakarta for many years, so I know what Indonesian food is supposed to taste like. So let me tell ya, this place ain't it sis. I went here once years ago and I guess forgot why I never returned, so I gave it another shot on Saturday, and sadly remembered why I only went once. I ordered the Lemper and the Resoles as appetizers- both made with canned chicken, both flavorless, and over salty. Then we ordered the chicken satay which was also beyond disappointing. I'm almost positive the chicken was undercooked and/or old and made me SICK. Then, the peanut sauce... It's like they used "chunky" Skippy's peanut butter and nothing else. I understand cutting cost especially because of the pandemic, but like maybe just try to fake it till you make it. The corner cutting severely effects quality, and I'm disappointed to say that if I want good Indonesian food I gotta go all the way to L.A or go through the trouble of hunting down some ingredients and cooking it myself at home. Overall, I thought this place was pretty good. It's hard to find indonesian food in the bay area now that the main ones have shuttered their doors (borobodur, jayakarta, etc). I ordered the nasi kuning, satay ayam, ayam goreng kuning, tahu isi, martabak telor and lemper. Picked up krupuk udang, melinjo chips and roasted peanuts as well. Everything tasted fairly authentic and delicious! The tahu isi had great crisp to it, however my complaint would be that the filling felt closer to risoles filling (minced/chopped veggies), and not so much the street version I used to get on the streets of bandung (goodness with beansprouts and veggies). A difference in preference I guess, as I have never had their type before. Another disappointment would be that while eating my lemper this morning, there was a long hair embedded in it . Normally I would deduct all stars for this and never come back. But given that the food was fairly authentic, and the only other Indo establishments left in the bay area are in southbay, I will only deduct 2 stars... I likely won't come back though. Hygeine, proper food handling, safety and storage are critical in this industry... especially now with Covid. I'm sad I couldn't write a raving review here or on my instagram as I had intended. Just tried out food from this place recently. We were overall satisfied with the food and customer service. But wish the portions were a bit larger than what they are. We tried: Lamb satay, Indonesian fried chicken and shrimp/chicken noodles. All were flavorful and delicious. Customer service was good. It is a cute little place. Nice and cozy. Like I said not the best Indonesian but tasty. Some items more than others. We tried the Gado Gado (Indonesian salad with a peanut sauce), and then ordered a number of the appetizer dim sum like things. pork bun for my son, the Kroket which is a fritter filled with ground beef and mashed potatoes, and a lemper ayam which is a coconut sticky rice filled with chicken. I wasn't impressed with the Gado Gado. It was a very basic salad and the peanut sauce was much too thick and sweet for my tastes. However, the other items were excellent. The Kroket was spiced very nicely with an intriguing blend of spices including nutmeg. Unusual. The coconut sticky rice was delicious. We were happy with the items except the salad. This is one of my favorite little gems in Old Sac. I always think of overly touristy places or very expensive places when I think of food here but this place is different. Authentic, tasty Indonesian food at reasonable prices served hot and fresh is what it is all about! I have thoroughly enjoyed every thing I have ordered here. I stick to the authentic items and don't stray into the Chinese or American style food so I can't comment on those. The service is friendly but slow. Be prepared to wait a little bit for your food.
