I haven't been to Bamboo Garden in its previous incarnation, which apparently closed back in March so I can't compare it to how it was before. But the place is certainly nice, clean, and spacious. In fact, this space is actually gorgeous! With a golden frieze on the outside, and bright lights in a blue-and-gold theme and chandeliers on the inside, you almost expect a roulette table to come out of the floor and James Bond to walk inside any minute. Best of all, at 12 noon on a warm Saturday in October there was no line. The restaurant was pretty full, but there were still some tables available. Even though we were given a table in the second room, we never had to wait much for carts to come around. The overall atmosphere was certainly less hectic and belligerent than at other dim sum places in Chinatown in Manhattan that are usually super-packed. All the dim sum dishes were fresh and tasty, perhaps the dishes could have been a couple of degrees warmer, but that's just my personal preference. There were a couple of dishes I haven't seen before, like this tofu and fish paste with abalone, shrimp, or duck egg on top. Or rice noodle with chashu pork. And, of course, all the steamed dumplings you can think of. Service is extra-attentive, certainly a step above your average dim sum place, and the bathrooms have plenty of marble and are clean. This regal dim sum palace has incredible kitchen dishes as well. The ambience is perfect and waits for the day this place is full again. Meanwhile, the togo items somehow make it to my place without losing that freshly-made-by-a-chef quality. They have wonderful dim sum in the mornings. I had dinner tonight, so no dim sum. Dim Sum ends at 2 pm, though it's not clear when items start selling out. My spouse loves the Singapore Mei Fun. i usually taste a dirt essence in the yellow curry used on mei fun, which in turn makes shrimp taste unclean. But theirs is clean in both aspects. Today we tried the beed chow fun, dry. It was well-balanced with that addictive wok flavor. Not too many onions, just a nice balance of accent veg. Filet Steak with black pepper sauce is worth obsessing over, and theirs is always delicious. The eggplant with garlic sauce is complex, with woodear mushrooms, broccoli, red and yellow peppers, and onions. The broccoli and peppers add great visual appeal and I am so tickled to get complimentary veg in my eggplant. Their eggplant is cooked to that slinky, squishy perfection. And the garlic sauce is the right balance of sweet and tangy to make me rethink the concept of garlic sauce entirely. read more

My family has been coming here ever since I was a kid and it has been a family favorite since upon discovery. Line to get seated can get long, so I definitely recommend coming here before 11 AM. At that time, food is always fresh and you can also place orders for specialty dishes. My normal Brooklyn dim sum spot, East Harbor Seafood Palace, is closed for renovation until May. Bamboo Garden is basically around the corner and is good for emergency dim sum. You know, when you're lazy and don't want to schlep to Chinatown in Manhattan. It's definitely smaller than the grand dim sum palaces in the city, but the over the top decor is the same. My boyfriend and I came around 10:30/11:00am, right before prime time and we seemed to have beat the rush. We were seated straight away, at a communal table with two other gentleman who kept to themselves. The dim sum was hot and fresh (scallion dumplings, shumai, pork buns, beef ball, all the classics) and was quite delicious. I feel like there is quite a bit of spillover from people who would have gone to East Harbor Seafood Palace and came to Bamboo Garden instead. The carts rolled down the aisles somewhat slowly, there weren't enough of them either. Get the eggs tarts at the end (3 to a serving) and if you're feeling a bit daring, try the durian pastry. $43 before tip for two, to walk out feeling like a pork bun. read more

This review is going to be strictly for the dinner here. Bamboo garden offers the traditional Cantonese cuisine and for those of you who are unfamiliar you'll find out in a bit. The interior is pretty typical, nothing you haven't seen before if you've been to at least one dimsum palace type of restaurant. You got the red velvet in the back with the golden Chinese Phoenix and dragon. There's always the crystal chandelier on the ceiling and each circle table has a red table cloth with a lazy Susan glass table top in the center. The food? Quite mediocre to be honest. Some of the dishes were good but others were average or below average. The Good : Both the boiled and fried crab legs were good. The meat retained a lot of the juice for both and the batter on the fried ones was perfect. My only complaint is the "butter" that they gave us for the boiled crab was definitely NOT butter at all. Probably some type of oil or margarine. The crab fried rice was also quite good. I liked the egg floss and the crispy onion adds a great texture to the overall dish. However, poor use of the crab shell for presentation though. It just looks awkward and random...I mean I see what they were going for and I've personally done it with the outside of a pineapple for pineapple beef that I cook at home, but jeez it just does not work here. The lamb chops were seasoned well and had good flavor, but they were slightly overcooked. The salted chicken with ginger scallion was okay as well, but it's supposed to be a pretty basic dish. The mediocre/bad: Pretty much everything else. All of the vegetable dishes were okay, I mean its pretty hard to mess up stir fried veggies. Nothing outstanding here. The squid with peas and macadamia nuts was below average. When done right, this dish is supposed to be very fragrant from the toasted macadamia nuts toasted at a high fire with the stir-fried squid and vegetables equally contributing to the overall flavor of the dish. If you go to any low-key Taishanese restaurant they'll show you how it's done. I was told that's where it originated from anyways. The one they ruined the most was the lobster yi mein. Also known as longevity noodles. Noodles were oily and overcooked to a mushy texture. I've easily made this dish much better at home. The lobster as a stand-alone was okay, but I've had better. Would I recommend this place for dinner? Personally I would say no unless you know exactly which dishes they nail perfectly here. I mean they get a lot business from loyal locals who want to celebrate holidays or have a wedding feast so I'm sure they know what to order and what to avoid. read more

My family forgot to make reservations at our usual restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner. This was the only place available on 8th Avenue. Unfortunately, we were stuck with Bamboo Garden with a private room in the basement... (shady AF) and it lacked ventilation. Private Room requires you to spend a minimum of $300.00 per table. This fine print was not expressed on the phone upon reservation by the way, so beware. To cut to the chase, food was bad. The only acceptable dish was the Salt and Pepper Baked Squid - well duh, it's a safe dish... We found a thread in the Special Cold Appetizer by the way... be careful. Another 'wtf' moment we had was the Fried Milk with String Beans and Seafood dish... we were served half the dish and half way through our dinner, the server walks in with the fried milk and dumps it into the rest of the plate... and it was cold... This was an excellent find for dim sum in Brooklyn - place looks absolutely gorgeous after renovations, and service is super-quick. No line on weekends, and both times we been there, we got seated right away. Food is fresh, flavorful & bountiful - and even I have to admit, while I do not go for dim sum very often, I enjoyed it all very much. Love, love steamed shrimp dumplings, and all their sweets. We also got a look at their private party rooms downstairs - beautifully set and vary in size for any party size. Split it with someone else, and we both had more than enough food with the rice, cabbage, and good portion of chopped char siu BBQ Pork. Good sweet glaze that made the meat juicy and sweet. Aside from some minor touch ups to the interior and a new sign, Bamboo Garden is essentially the same exact establishment as it's predecessor Golden Bay. The staff remains the same and the product (Dim Sum, Cantonese Seafood) seems to be identical. The question remains, does it taste the same? The answer is yes. Nothing outstanding but certainly better than what could be had in Manhattan and for considerably less money of course. There are Dim Sum specials on the weekdays and the crowds are more of a handful on the weekend. Some items (turnip cake, shrimp dumplings, and crescent pork dumplings) are decent here, while the rest (shiu mai, bbq pork buns, pork spareribs) are a bit on the blander side. To their credit they have a decent array of BBQ meats hanging in their takeout window. When fresh the roast duck and pork are succulent and delicious. Combine that with a takeout wonton noodle or a standard rice dish and you've got a meal fit for a champ. Since timing is everything, the best time to come here would probably be during dinner service. As BK Chinatown becomes more predominantly Fukinese, good Cantonese options are becoming a dying breed. Banquet style places like Bamboo Garden are a sure thing for solid Canto fare / Dim Sum. read more

After enduring a frustrating long-haul two hour commute of four subway lines from Queens to Brooklyn's Chinatown at Eighth Avenue, I worked up an appetite. A good friend (perhaps more, maybe...) organized a Yum Cha gathering in Brooklyn at the closure of enduring a whole week of intense summer's heatwave. Bamboo Garden Restaurant's quality of food is good and dining areas are clean and presentable. The dining areas contains ample seating for large groups. Yum Cha food carts circulation are plentiful as there is no shortage. The price is reasonable for our party of ten totaling $78.00 which includes NYC's notorious sales tax and gratuity. Wait staff service is attentive. The decor is modern frames of Chinese gold character calligraphy in black lacquer which adorns the walls next to large plasma TV screens. I rate Bamboo Garden Restaurant four stars as there are only two washrooms in the whole restaurant where each washroom contains only one unisex stall. Oddly to my dismal, the unisex washroom contains a male urinal wall unit side-by-side next to the toilet, which is unappealingly disturbing. After spending the day at Industry City, my boyfriend and I found this spot and are glad we did. The place is gorgeous- mirrored walls, huge chandeliers and large round tables for family-style dining. We were greeted very warmly upon arrival and given our own table. I'm sure it's busier during the dim sum service. The menu is extensive and has pictures which were helpful for figuring out what we wanted. We ordered the steamed shrimp dumplings, steamed pork dumplings, Chungking chicken, mixed vegetables and two bowls of white rice. Shrimp dumplings- Four pieces of plump goodness. Each dumpling was filled to the brim with sweet shrimp. I could have had another order for sure! Pork dumplings- The three pieces were filled with a pork that was more of a paste and was a nice creamy blend with the greens. Chicken- Nice bite-sized pieces with a medley of colorful peppers. Very big portion so great dish to share. Veggies- Came in a nice oyster sauce and included broccoli, bok choi, water chestnuts, sugar snap peas. I was really hesitant to come here from just looking at the reviews since the only time I had ventured away from my go-to dim sum place in Brooklyn (East Harbor) was to its nearby Park Asia and that was not a great experience at all. However, I must say that Bamboo Garden really surprised me! All of the staff working in the restaurant were super friendly. The ladies pushing the cart were absolutely adorable, trying to tell us what things were in English to the people at our table who were not Chinese. Service was very quick and there was always a cart roaming in the area. The price itself is also very reasonable. Plus, there were very few things that I asked for that they didn't have, which is quite impressive as well. So we wound up at the 3-star Bamboo Garden and I have no idea how it got that rating. Everything was good but the blockbuster hit was the lobster with ginger and scallion, bringing the crustacean bliss with a sauce that augmented but didn't dominate the main attraction. Shrimp with lobster was from the same paradigm as the dish you've had before but much fresher and meatier. We also got steamed flounder and a zingy counterpoint to the seafood in the Hong Kong-style sweet and sour spare ribs. There's a lot more to try on the lengthy, photogenic menu.This is the kind of place when you'll want to look at other people's food on the way in or out. read more

The noodles were pretty thick and floury but they still tasted good! They weren't as drenched in soy sauce like most places. Ok Cantonese restaurant in 8th Ave. I've been here for dimsum and for dinners before and I usually leave satisfied. The decor is great! There is a lot of seating available at the numerous round tables and I like how the windows have drapes as well. Plates are not the cleanest but definitely pass my health inspection lol. Service is a little inattentive but they are fairly nice. Most of the food that we got was alright. The sweet and sour spare ribs and the fried tofu tasted very standard. The garlic chicken was a little on the dry side but the flavor was good. I was not a fan of the steak and broccoli because the sauce was a little on the salty side. Our dinner ended up being $70 for 4 people, which I would say is typical for dinner at Cantonese restaurants. The food tasted very average but I left feeling very satiated so that's a plus. Came with my family on a Saturday morning for dim sum and we were seated in the farthest back table which was a step up from ground level. The carts barely came towards the back. At one moment, my family and I were appalled when we asked the lady what she had in her cart and she told us to come to her and get what we wanted. We were like "???" Okay, never really had that experience before... The large hall is your average Asian banquet: loud and filled with people, the food is also average, nothing too outstanding. The dim sum here is delicious! It totally reminds me of the meals I had on trips to Hong Kong in my childhood. My favorites were the har gao (shrimp dumplings), the shrimp and pork shiumai, the shrimp cheung fun (shrimp wrapped in rice noodles--though we called it ho fun when I was a kid), and the char siu bao! This review is solely based on service with a manager. I brought my American friend to get the roast meats at this restaurant because the food here is quite good. The manager who handled our money snatched and threw our money back at us and then threw the food on the counter. Trying to give benefit of doubt, we watched how he treated the customer right after us and he handled that interaction with much more respect. As much as I personally like the food, the experience was so racist and horrible that I don't feel comfortable coming back nor do I recommend people who aren't Asian to come here. read more

Bamboo Garden has some really delicious Cantonese Chinese food in Brooklyn 8th Ave Chinatown. With a recent dining room renovation and affordable menu, its one of the best options in the neighborhood. The dim sum is so delicious and fresh that my mom refuses to go to Manhattan Chinatown anymore, and forces us to drive 30 minutes out here instead of a 10 minute subway. They also have multiple large party rooms in the basement with elevator access and restrooms. Recently had a Red Egg party and loved every dish that came. The restaurant was happy to modify dishes and the menu. The room we were in was beautiful, with excellent A/C and a nifty button to call the waitstaff when you need them. They do try to fit as many tables/chairs into a room as possible, so if you have to deal with wheelchairs or many elderly people, you may want to ask for a bigger space. It also has microphones for a karaoke set up. The only major con is that the restrooms are not ADA friendly and there are no changing tables. Recommend paying in cash. Parking can be tough, so build in an extra 10 minutes to find a spot nearby. read more

I am gonna stick with the three star rating that seems par for the course with this Canto restaurant. I visited for a family affair so we had a private room with karaoke. Staff was attentive, which is a nice change of place for most dim sum joints. Unfortunately, the food was not always hot, which is an issue. There was coffee, which you could purchase for the asking and it was decent, but the food overall didn't dazzle me. It was o.k. However, if you need a nice room for about 30 people then this could work. Perhaps if you were to select a banquet menu then the food would be prepped accordingly? By the time we were done with our SHRIMP DUMPLINGS which, btw were steamed and served in bamboo dish, not only tasted amazing, but had that bamboo aroma in them, the main coarse arrived and the portions were gigantic!!!! SEAFOOD PLATE look so inviting, it was literally made from dry vermishel, that I couldn't resist an urge to taste...and I did....hmm...lol...first bite taste blunt, just like popcorn would taste without salt and butter, but then it became a totally different experience when I deep it into scallops sauce! SCALLOPS IN THE BROWN SAUSE-it made my mouth jump jump from happiness. It was so delicious, full of flavor and chewy, all at the same time!!! The next thing was SPICY TOFU. It came with grind beef and vegetable in super spicy jalapeño sauce. OMG... almost forgot...for tea-lovers: When they brought green tea the aroma of jasmine in it was hypnotizing, one slice of lemon and it tasted divine. Absolutely will come back!!!! Come here at least twice a week with family. I like this place more than the ones around this area. The prices are about since theres like 3 other dim sum restaurants within a 4-5 block radius. Haven't seen this in the neighboring places, but they have this red date gelatin like dessert, which I order every time I'm here. The different food they were serving had some real inconsistencies. Some were nice and hot and tasted great while others were mediocre and cold. You really didn't know what your were going to get when you pick something out to eat. The atmosphere was alright, the servers who pushed the food carts around were a little pushy in serving their food despite us telling them we weren't interested. This was my first encounter with a dim sum type restaurant. Had some medical issues which brought me in the area and was very hungry. From the outside this place looks random and not at all like a restaurant. I am an english speaker/reader and everything in this area is very oriental so hard to tell sometimes. My friend and I found this on our google map and decided to be adventurous. We got swept in, seated at a big round table and got some delish jasmine hot tea. Everything was a wave of freestyle, kinda wish someone would explain how the dim sum concept worked but it seemed like there weren't a lot of english speakers in the house. Women rolled around with carts full of delicious and strange looking dishes. We strayed towards pork or chicken dim sum, eventually a waiter offered us a menu and we got some mei fun noodles. Everything was so yummy though! The decor was on the fancier side, very gold and red with lots of phoenix/dragon images.
