The Pho here is highly regarded amongst regulars for a reason. My go-to is the Large sized #15a, Steak and Meatballs. The fresh veggies are served on the side, so I pile those in and go to work, leaving nothing behind but an empty bowl. I made it up to Jacksonville this weekend to meet with a good friend. Being famished from driving, we opted for something close by and went to the Banana Leaf Asian Bistro! Going in, there was an hour before closing and the place was moderately packed. For dinner, we ordered 2x milk teas, 1x spring rolls, 1x Banana Leaf special pho, 1x beef stew, and 1x Asian doughnuts. Going into my review, for the most part, everything was great! The Thai milk tea I ordered was ok, but it tasted more like coffee with a hint of Thai spice. The spring rolls had a nice soft chewy texture, stuffed nicely, and a creamy peanut sauce! The pho was a great value, in comparison to other spots, and had underlying aromatics! Beef stew had a nice balance of sweet, salty, and sour flavor; great amount of meat! But there was no tendon and tripe in mine. The doughnuts had a soft chewy texture to it that was addictively delicious and the sweetened condensed milk made it even better! I ordered the house special, a soup with various ingredients, and it took them four times to get it right. Each time they either had the wrong ingredients or left out an ingredient. I had to show the waitress the list of ingredients in the menu. I don't understand how the cook did not know what goes into the house special. Yes! An authentic Cambodian/Khmer restaurant in Jax! A hidden gem located on Cassat Ave. Met my parents and sister here for lunch and the ambiance is calm and casual. Our server is the owner and apparently knows my parents. We're a big Cambodian community so it's, in a way, expected. It was a chilly outside so I ordered the Vietnamese pho with all the meats: flank, meatballs, tripe, and tendon. My sister and dad ordered the Phnom Penh noodles and step-mom got the Beef sticks with rice. My pho was hot and the broth was good. Everything came together well. Overall, quality Cambodian, Viet, and Thai food -- of course, if you come here you're crazy to get anything other than the Cambodian given Cambodian restaurants are few and far between in Florida. And the Cambodian noodle soup I had was quite good -- much like pho. Their summer rolls, which are stuffed with chicken instead of pork as common with Viet summer rolls, are also pretty good. Service was prompt and friendly (they were not however busy when we stopped in, though) and the restaurant has a calm feel to it with tranquil music and a southeast Asian interior that is appropriate for the cuisines at hand if a bit worn around the edges. All in all, a good experience. I really liked their peanut sauce for the summer rolls though I think the actual summer rolls are better over at Pho 7777: more robust and flavorful. I still though would really encourage people to try this restaurant for something different and order some of the Cambodian food for sure. read more

The place is totally non pretentious, however cozy and bigger inside than what it looks from the outside. The service was very helpful and friendly. I honestly don't know much about Cambodian food and didn't felt like venturing today so went for the pad thai; which I'm going to say it was good but not great. There are better options in town. The interior is very clean and updated, the waitress was very pleasant and attentive, and our order showed up fast and hot! *Egg Rolls: they come with 4 rolls and a side of sweet chilli sauce. I've been coming to this place for years. It seems they got new ownership a year or so ago. They renovated it and made it nice and installed quite a large bar. There are big TVs to watch sports if you're so inclined. The food is quite good. The portion sizes have definitely gone down, Since when I went in there last week, I ordered some rice soft rolls. They were very small. They were like 2 inches long and 1 inch thick. I had never seen that. Come out like that before. I also ordered some chicken sticks, I think it was chicken. They were incredibly tiny. The pad was fairly good tasting, but it was also very small. Inside was clean and nice. The spring roll was good but the dipping sauce wasn't as thick and "peanut-y" as I would like. The pho was good but a little stingy on the meat and noodles. I always go for the eggrolls and fish sauce, but enjoy the Pad Thai and specialty Cambodian dishes. It's a mix of different countries, but everything's tasty. Mee Katang is delicious. It's easy to put me in a good mood with this kind of dish. The beef, flat noodles, and sauce make for an exquisite, rich flavor. The jie lan, which I'm often not a fan of, is nevertheless perfect here for soaking up the umami. However, I do wish there was more noodle. I did order the cha kwai to soak up some of the juice, but this didn't work too well. It's identical to the you tiao in dim sum and only made me want porridge. Maybe I'll just order a side of white rice next time. I also tried the Cambodian fried rice. It was surprisingly generic, but well made. The rice is fluffy and the ingredients are nicely sized and portioned. It did have a subtle sour taste that gets stronger after a while, like an apple cider vinegar aftertaste, although I don't think that's what it is. I usually dont come this way but i heard this place's name a lot of times already. I decided to stop by tonight Im Vietnamese and some people said this place has the best pho. But i got distracted by Loat Na (stir fry tear drop noodle) which i had once before and it was sooo good so I ordered it here, and it was great My partner got the beef stew and he rlly liked it, it has a hint of lemongrass which is very interesting, like the food is similar to Vietnamese food but with a slight difference or twist that make it refreshing, i think this is the best bo kho we had so far in Jax tbh usually it's very watered down in Vietnamese restaurant or the beef is tough, the beef stew here use thinner cut of beef and the broth is soupy but flavorful, perfect for cold weather The waitress was very nice and the place is clean and well-kept, their restroom is also very clean. My friends (two are Cambodian) visited me in Jacksonville and was excited to try a Cambodian restaurant. It's located in a shopping plaza next to the freeway. The owner was a sweet woman who took her time to take our order and was happy to find out that my friends were Cambodian. She was very friendly. Onto the food. She forgets three of our items (2 drinks and my dish). This was odd because she sat down with us, wrote it down, then repeated our orders. There was only one table that was there with us and another that arrived after we ordered. My friend said the soups were similar to what his mother makes so it was enjoyable. The stir fry noodle dish he got was "alright," his words. He enjoys things that are burn your butthole spicy so he didn't think it was close to spicy enough. I ordered the chicken dish which came out super late... as it was forgotten. It sounded great on the menu, but tasted like rotisserie chicken cooked with some garlic; it was super dry. Rice was dry too - would've been perfect if used for fried rice. Meat skewers, spring rolls were all so small. For the price, the portion size of the appetizers do not add up. I did not like the Thai tea and it was actually one of the least favorite Thai teas I've ever had. My friend ordered the egg yolk(?) drink I believe. It never came, and we were already done eating at that point so didn't ask since we didn't get charged for it. All in all, I mean I was really looking forward to Banana Leaf but experience was mediocre. But I will also say, this place is definitely delicious and worth spending your pennies. The food is just as good as mama's cooking. Very much home-styled flare with all the fixings. They have a mixture of traditional Cambodian food with Vietnamese and Thai dishes such as pho. My absolute favorite thing to get is the Cambodian style chow fun, meek-a-thang. There aren't many Cambodian restaurants around in Florida so when we heard there was one in Jacksonville, we had to try it! The restaurant stated that it is a Cambodian, Vietnamese, and Thai restaurant. However, although the cuisines are similar through cultural & historical migrations, I would say the restaurant gears towards the Cambodian flavor profile which is more light and mild compared to Vietnamese and Thai. We ordered the beef satay, papaya salad, phnom penh noodles, and ba-bong. The beef satay was good but personal preference, I like the thai version with a bit of char on it better. The papaya salad was nice, tangy, acidic, from the lime juice and the papaya tasted fresh. The phnom penh noodles came with a clear broth with wonderful light flavors complimenting the small rice noodles. I just wish they provided a tray of vegetables and herbs for the soup also. The ba-bong is similar to Vietnamese bún which are a rice vermicelli noodle bowl with eggroll, meat, and assorted vegetables. While Vietnamese bún uses a fish-sauce based dressing, this dish used a light curry broth that felt hearty, satisfying, and brought everything together! TLDR; local Cambodian business with a very nice owner. I'd recommend for anyone who never tried Cambodian food before! read more
