My new favorite sandwich is a grilled chicken or lemongrass beef with a well done egg. Fills you up an extra amount with that egg and if you like pate then add it! it's a plus on flavor. New favorite drinks are Thai green tea and citrus passion fruit green tea (I really like sweet though so you should ask for less sweet if you're not a fan of sweet). Either my experience with Vietnamese sandwhiches has been spoiled by chinatown or all of these reviews are from friends. Hands down worst banh mi I've ever had. Now don't get me wrong, it's not horrible. It's ok... not deserving of any reputation for being a banh mi place. The tea used for the milk teas tastes very watered down... I pretty much had a glass of sweetened milk. Overall a very disappointing experience. To add... 9 dollars for a small sandwhich and a weak rendition of a milk tea with a small bag of chips. Ps, the sandwhiches LOOk decently sized but then you realize it's 50% bread (Are they using sourdough?!). I'm usually pretty lax on food quality but for some reason this place really disappointed me. They forgot to give me my drink ( but I forgot to ask about it) and I didn't realize until I got home. I'm honestly offended by this place. First of all, call it what you want but do not allow your staff -specifically those who are Vietnamese- to make idiotic statements that "yes, the grilled pork sandwich is the same as a banh mi thit nuong." Betch, no it ain't. If I wanted Chinese BBQ Pork, I would go to Sinh Sinh and get a whole damn order and then stuff it in multiple baguettes and add soy sauce myself. However, I wanted a typical Banh Mi Thit Nuong which last I checked does not mean honey glazed grilled pork. Sure, I'm partially to blame for not looking at a menu to actually read the description, but when a banh mi shop is located next to a huge Viet community I just assume that there would be no deviations in standards. Apparently, it's called "lemongrass beef" here. But whatever, I digress. Despite the mishap, the banh mi I received was below par. Not only was the bread not fully toasted, but they drowned my entire sandwich in soy sauce, which made every bite excruciatingly hard to chew and swallow. I haven't been back for a second time, but my sister wanted banh mi's so decided to give this place another try since it's right down the road from her house. She stopped by and placed an order for 5 sandwiches, to which ETC runs a promotion of buy 5 get 1 free. Poor thing waited almost an hour to get her food AND she didn't even get that free sandwich because it probably would've taken another 10+ minutes to make. Lol. Take her experience with a grain of salt, but Vietnamese sandwiches are known for being quick and easy so having to wait almost an hour to get five simple sandwiches which are supposed to be the bread & butter to this place is a hell no in my book. The atmosphere is nice as well as the service, but the quality of the food does not match other places. A chicken banh mi is a classic and is priced at $5. The best banh mi I've had is barely $3. The quality just doesn't justify the price. I've also had the mango smoothie at many other places and the one here makes the bottom of the list. The taste is closer to water and the tapioca is average. My two items were over $10. That price point can get you 3-4 items at places with 10x the quality. This review isn't to bash on them; it's simply to inform the owner/manager that they can do better and to let the consumers know that there is better. I have been hearing very good things in the neighborhood about this place, unless you know what Bahn Mi is, you wouldn't know it served food. I thought it was a Vietnamese Smoothie joint. It always has a good lunch crowd coming and going. So, I go in and see that their specialty is a sandwich on "dough" bread. Prices look very reasonable, but I thought I'd just try spring rolls for my first hit. Ugh so disappointed. What a rip off. I spent $10 on two milk teas with boba and 75 percent of the cup was full of huge chunks of ice. There was hardly any boba in it, which only filled up to the first line on the bottom of the cup. The HK milk tea was watered down and the milk tea tasted like sugar water with a very subtle tea flavor. The boba was STICKY and not fresh tasting. This was my second visit here and I haven't been impressed at all! I keep hoping to get decent boba in the area but I'll make a drive plus pay tollway fees just for a satisfying drink. I was so happy that a place that serves boba finally opened up in the Jersey Village area. I am an avid boba fan and since this was very close to my house I decided to give it a try. The first time I went here after opening, I got a taro smoothie with boba. The taro flavor was extremely artificial, overly sweet, the ice wasn't blended well, and they put very little tapioca pearls. Needless to say I was so disappointed. Today, after several months, I decided to give this place another try. This time I got the green Thai tea. Again, same problem with the drink being overly sweet. The flavor of the tea itself was lacking and overly aromatic. They were very stingy with the boba pearls. Disappointed yet again with the terrible quality drinks. We were in town visiting my dad and happened to pass by this shopping strip. I noticed that there was a banh mi shop that wasn't there before and we decided to stop in. Boy were we in for a surprise! I thought this would be your typical banh mi shop but once we stepped inside, we were instantly impressed! The decor, the lighting, the ambiance... all were on point. We went to the counter to order and were greeted by a very friendly staff. We ordered the grilled chicken banh mi with a well done fried egg, grilled pork banh mi with an over easy fried egg, the chicken eggrolls, and a strawberry/banana smoothie. The prices were a little more than what I was expecting, HOWEVER, the grilled chicken was white meat chicken so that was in line with the price. Understandable. Normally, other places will use dark meat chicken and you'll get pieces of fat and gristle...no thanks! I'll pay a little more for good quality meat. Our food came out quickly. One look and I could tell that it was going to be good! The veggies that came with the eggrolls were FRESH and plentiful, the chicken egg rolls were seasoned well, the banh mi was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, the egg was fried perfectly, and the meat to bread ratio was perfect. I was pretty hungry so I ordered a vermicelli with pork and egg rolls, and a mango slush with boba. The vermicelli bowl turned out alright but the mango slush was horrible. I have had mango slush from multiple shops but this is the worst mango slush i ever had in my life. It did not taste anything close to mango. It was so bad after I took a sip, I returned to the establishment to ask the guy behind the counter if he made a mango slush. I have been searching for a good bahn mi place in this part of town for soooo long and I have finally found it!!!!!!! This place exceeded my expectations! I got the pork and chicken bahn mi and thought they were going to be like the rest I have had in the area, but I was wrong. They did not skimp on the meat and the bread tasted very fresh. Not a large menu during their grand opening. But what they have so far is great. There's a special running these first few days where you can get a sandwich, chips or eggroll, and a fountain drink for $5. It's a steal. Good bread, meat, and pate, crisp and fresh veggies, good ambiance, clean restaurant, friendly employees. This place is great and I'll be back soon. The pork banh mi is delicious, but they were out of eggrolls when I went. They also have chicken, tofu, meatball, and something they call a "special" for your sandwich fillings. They also have smoothies and milk tea, which is something I plan to try next time. You can add on things like egg or extra pate. I hope this place does well so it can stick around! Go visit! read more
