I came because there was a hype about this place. Their prices have raised to $6 for the special sub which still isn't too bad. First to notice is that there are two lines: one for already paid and one for ordering. They will call whoever is next in line to go in to order. Then they will tell you a number which you have to remember because there is no number slip, and then you wait at the already paid side for your number to be called. Their subs are definitely crunchy which is good. Their length are longer than others. However, they skimp on toppings. Few strands of pickled daikon/carrot. One or two sprigs of cilantro. One thing I didn't like is how little pâté they gave. You can't even taste it. There is only pâté on the special sub. The special came with ground pork, 2 slices of viet deli meat, and a jelly meat (which I've never seen at other places). The lemon grass pork was also different from other places as it wasn't grilled so it was soft. The VN bacon had 1 slice of viet deli meat and some thin slices of pork belly. The pork belly was tasty. Overall, I found it very bland since they lacked on all the cheaper fillers as well. Not much mayo/pâté taste, barely any pickled veggies, 1 cucumber, 2 ciltrano, 1 jalapeño that doesnt reach the length of the sub. The pâté was very tasty whenever you get a bigger glob of it in your bite. The jelly pork was also tasty. Even the cheap viet subs at Duffin's Donuts give a lot more pickled veggies although their subs are small. But, so far nothing beats Ba Le for me. Driving by, you'll often see a lineup outside of Banh Mi Saigon. So what's the deal with this place? Who would wait in line for a vietnamese sandwich? I was lucky enough to drive by and see no lineup. This was my chance to find out what the fuss was all about. The shop is no Apple Store. It's not pretty, but it sure is functional. The staff is pleasant and works quickly to get your order ready. I ordered four of their specials. Yep. Four. And they were ready in less than five minutes. Immediately, I noticed the size of the bread. It was larger than what many other banh mi shops serve up. Once I got home and took one out of it's elastic and deli paper, I knew I had made a good decision. I then gobbled it up and moved on to the second. I wish I had paid more attention to the ingredients and the taste, but it was really that good that I just ate it. I suppose that's the sign of some real good food; Getting me to stop thinking and just eating. So to answer the question of who would wait in a lineup for a sandwich? Lots of people. This is one of the best bahn mi places in Vancouver I've been to! The bread is a leap ahead of other places I've tried and for $6 its a really good value for what you get. I tried the house special, chicken, and lemon grass pork and they were all delicious! At the moment due to covid measures you'll need to line up on the left side outside of the store to order and they will give you a number after you pay (CASH ONLY). For the longest time, my parents have been buying sandwiches here but I never knew the name of the restaurant but now I can officially say it is one of my top favourite places for Vietnamese sandwiches! My favourite is the cold cut sandwich, it has a variety of meats and Vietnamese ham and has delicious paté, mayo and pickled vegetables that are so crunchy! They do such an amazing job with putting so much meat (thick cuts too) into the sandwich and it is so filling! Been there 10+ times now in the past 3 months. All good, and therefore a perfect 10 for consistency. Winner: Lemongrass pork and LG chicken. Ask for spicy for that extra kick. If you're vegetarian, they have something for you too. Staff is friendly, and during COVID, it's simple to call ahead and then pick up your order on arrival. Just make sure you have cash. They don't take any cards. The bread is always crispy on the outside and tasty on the inside. The pickled veggies that go inside are just right. I've had Banh Mi Saigon on a few occasions and it never disappoints! The #1 House Special Duc Biet is my favourite and go-to sandwich. The sandwiches are larger than usual, the bread is always baked fresh, and they have high quality ingredients. I enjoyed the sandwich recently when we went to Minnekhada Park and hiked up to High Knoll. I had the sandwich tied to the side of my backpack and pretty much devoured it when we reached the top. We tried to House Special Banh Mi and the Lemongrass Pork Banh Mi. I honestly love me a good typical banh mi (which I would consider the house special) because it's got the cold cuts and pate. To our surprise, we actually LOVED and enjoyed the lemongrass pork more that the House Special! The bread was flaky and fresh (they had actually run out of bread and had to make more, so ours was still warm). The flavour of the pork was phenomenal. The house was good, but while eating it the flavour of pate was strong (so you have to actually like the taste of pate) and I kind of wished there was a little bit more pickled carrot/radish on both sandwiches for that ultimate delicious salty sweet fresh combo. Before I went to Vietnam I maybe had about 5 banh mis in my entire life. When I went to Vietnam, I had about 2 banh mis a day. After Vietnam, I'm craving banh mis left and right and I feel like an addict in need of their next fix. So as a result, I came to Banh Mi Saigon. And damn, did it fix my craving. I tried both the lemongrass pork, chicken, and special banh mis. My favourite? The lemongrass pork. I don't even like pork and I liked this one. It was saucy, flavourful, and so damn good. The special is also really good, but when I come back I'll definitely be ordering that lemongrass pork again. Hopefully they can make a lemongrass chicken option in the future! This spot is fast casual. You order at the counter, wait till they call your number, and then pick up your subs. I love that you can see them making your subs for you... it's kind of like a fancy version of Subway. You can either dine in or take out. But with there being very few tables, take out is the more popular option. One thing to note about this spot is that it is CASH ONLY and there is no ATM in the restaurant. Delicious bánh mì sandwiches! I ordered their house special, đc bit, because it was my first time visiting this place, and it is a good way to judge a bánh mì place if it's good. I arrived at 2:30 pm on a weekday, and it wasn't busy at all -- I was the only person in the shop. I was delighted to see that the staff would make the sandwiches in front of you. The room temperature bread had a crackly snap, chewy, and it tasted like it was baked on the same day in the morning. Sauce wise, there was a good amount of pâté and mayo, as they didn't put too much or too less. I would have preferred more veggies (shredded carrots and daikon radish), and the Vietnamese meats in the sandwich were just tasty. The price at $5.50 for a bánh mì is about right for this neighbourhood and there were plenty of free parking beside the shop. read more

With covid still in effect, they have a pretty straight forward social distancing plan with 2 separate lines outside the store: 1 to lineup to get inside to place your order and 1 lineup to wait for them to call your number to pick up your order (they have a speaker system setup so you can hear them call your number). Don't worry... the lineup moves pretty quick (unless you have someone in front of you placing an order for 10 banh mis). I picked the Banh Mi Dac Biet ($6) which is their house special banh mi that comes with ham, headcheese, meatball, meatloaf, pate, homemade mayo, soy sauce, and veggies. As I mentioned, the crusty bread is just as important as the filling in a good banh mi and the one at Banh Mi Saigon didn't disappoint. As is typical, expect to have bread crumbs fly everywhere as you bite into this sandwich. The filling in this sandwich was also quite good. For $6, this makes a great meal. My family makes a yearly pilgrimage to Forest Lawn Memorial Park every year around December. We pay our respects to family who have passed on... it's a pre Christmas family tradition. After our cemetery visit we usually settle down for lunch, but this year there was so much stuff happening that we had no time to sit down and enjoy a relaxing lunch. We ended up going to Banh Mi Saigon for to go Vietnamese sandwiches than headed to my mom's place to eat and have some congee before taking off and going our separate ways. Banh Mi Saigon was pretty busy. It was around lunch time so understandable but I'm told it's pretty popular so expect to wait! The store is set up like a deli. You go up to the counter order your sandwich, take a number and wait for your sandwich to be made. Seating is very limited but to me it looked like most people got their sandwiches to go. I got the Special Sandwich. It was pretty good. I like the fact that the store looks pretty clean and they make the sandwiches right in front of you. They have a big selection of sandwiches and we were in kind of a rush so I want to come back some other time to try some other things. We should have checked reviews for Banh Mi Saigon Before coming and previous customers were right with their negative comments. Subpar Food: Banh mi xiu mai has chunk of stir fried ground pork instead of xiu mai! Pate chaud: you can barely see the thin sliver of meat filling between the thick dough and not even flaky for this delicate mille-feuille dough. Spring rolls: very oily and again barely any meat in the filling, mostly clear noodles and carrot. Aggressive upselling: Cashier kept peddling different food to my mom even though she said no. After 4 times, she felt pressured and bought extras. Key: If your food is so great, people will buy more than you can make. Bad Customer service: at the pickup counter, my mom took one extra rubber band for the sandwich and they grabbed the rubber band from her hand. She didn't see their sign "Do not take rubber bands" but why don't they just put the rubber bands away from the window? After paying $50, they can't give us one extra rubber band. Take your money elsewhere, for better food or at least nicer service. I would have given this a zero if I could but system would not let me. read more

This is a little grab and go viet Sub store right in the mid of Victoria Street. It's always busy with people lining up in front of the store. The line was short (3 ppl ahead of us) the day we came but still we waited for about 15min to get our subs. Yes it's worth the hype. I tried Banh Mi from other places and nothing beats this one! The fresh bread, the tasty flavours... all so good! We come weekly whenever we are in East Van. Hint: Place your order on the phone, then all you do is pick it up. Otherwise, you line up twice: the left side to order, then again at the right to pick up. *** OWNER if you are reading this, perhaps look into an online ordering system. Your revenue would go up, as more sandwiches will be flying out the door quicker. GREAT quality tho... keep it up !!!! read more

Good value. Decent Bánh mi's, but not off the charts. I've been buying from them since they opened bc they're fast, good value, but few things really big me about the place. They guard Sriracha like it's gold and keep it away from customers. The cashiers are not particularly friendly, and they have a chaotic ordering system which is a problem bc they've clearly gotten busier. Be prepared to get frustrated and wait for some time. It took very little effort for the cute vietnamese ladies that work there to sell me more to get their deals...Ended up leaving there with 11 banh mi sandwiches and 4 minced pork pie! I got the Chicken Banh Mi to go and because I called ahead of time to order this (plus 5 others), i was in and out of there within 5 minutes. The banh mi itself was delicious on a crusty, light baguette filled with dark meat chicken that was flavourful but not too fatty. The mayo though, was a bit heavy but obviously, this is what makes it delicious. There is also a fair amount of pickled veggies, a cucumber and some cilantro as well. For only $4, this was a steal as finishing the whole thing kept me full for hours. Overall, my family gets banh mi from here all the time and with the low prices and delicious food, it doesn't seem like we will be switching shops anytime soon. read more

Their bread is why this Banh mi is one of the best in Vancouver. They bake it fresh daily in the store. The size is great, so your getting a great deal. This is a family run shop. Michael and John do a great job. If you want a treat. They also have a great breakfast puffed pastry with meat inside. It hits the spot on those cold mornings. They also have delicious 6 layer drink. The best layer is the navy bean. Very sweet. One note if you go there later in the afternoon, they could be closed even before there posted time. This place has become one of my favourite places for banh mi. I usually order the dac biet (special) because all the ingredients go well with their freshly baked french baguette. The bread is light and shatters when you bite into it, and that's part of the fun for me. There were crumbs everywhere, on the table, on the floor, on me, etc. I've even converted my sister, who usually prefers a chicken banh mi, as it's hearty, filling and tasty. I've tried it with with extra vegetables (too much) but I think I will ask for extra cilantro next time. I've also tried their puffed pastry with meat and it's very good. It's a great appetizer if you're a bit gnarish while waiting for your banh mi. They have become so busy, they don't even have time to slice your banh mi in half anymore! Their iced coffee is nice and strong and our favourite dessert is their 6 coloured che, a perfect balance of ice, coconut milk and various toppings. I've tried their strawberry juice/drink, but would prefer to try others in the future (passionfruit, tamarind, mango, etc.) Try it. It's easy on the budget and a great lunch option.
