Bar Frites is part of the Poll Restaurants group of restaurants. Somehow everytime i drive/walk by one of their restaurants, they're always busy. I don't understand it. I previously reviewed Hendricks, and the key word was "underwhelming". here, the food was good, but service was not so much. Maybe I'm missing something? I shall try the rest and see if I am indeed missing something. maybe it's the place to be seen? On to Bar Frites: Overall: 3 stars Food 4.0 stars service 2 stars atmosphere/ambiance/etc: 3 stars value: 2 stars Will i go back? maybe for takeout, or if someone else is paying. food: The food was excellent. we went during the lunch rush and ordered 4 dishes between us and ate family style. Grilled calamari, Mussels, Fried chicken and hangar steak. Other than the calamari, the dishes were excellent. the calamari was rubbery and bland. Fried chicken was especially good. Perfectly cooked and seasoned, tender meat--not dry but perfectly juicy. Ran out of time, otherwise would have ordered dessert. Service The positive: our waiter was friendly and made recommendations (fried chicken). the negative: he was scarce. We had to ask busboys for help most of the meal. Atmosphere etc: I don't really care about this, and don't notice much of the decor most of the time unless something stands out. The biggest knock on BF was that the tables are overcrowded. We had a table next to us and I literally was at one of their patron's shoulders. If one of us turned we would have kissed the other on the cheek. I'm not kidding. Value: as with any of Poll's restaurants, you're not getting cheap dishes. Even with lunch. Portion sizes are small, and prices are high. will i go back? Tried this place on a whim because we were going to Tilles Center to watch The Star Wars. The pictures looked good and I'm always down for burgers and frites. Well, from the outside it doesn't look like much. But inside is quite sexy. Open concept, hopping, and very friendly waitstaff. The service was so good, I felt like I should've worn a tie. Even though the senior citizens around me were mostly wearing polo shirts and crocs. If I had a complaint, it would be that the tables are too close together so I had to listen to the very loud conversation of the two admittedly attractive Asian women with the table next to us. I couldn't understand a word they were saying, because I don't speak whatever Asian language that was, but I did get to hear everything. I'm a simple man and I like simple pleasures. So I got the cheeseburger and frites. Talk about sexy, I got a food boner. Whatever their special blend of meat is, it made me want to make love to the cow it came from. I looked at that burger and said "I want you inside me." It was cooked perfectly and mouthwateringly melt in your mouth delicious. My wife got some pasta thing that was very good. Whatever. She's a normal person, so all I knew was she liked it. It was a little pricey for what we got, because I generally don't like to spend $21 on a hamburger. However, the food and service was so spectacular, I upgraded into another tax bracket for one day. Oh, and the soda comes in small 12 ounce bottles. Fancy-schmancy. I like that this restaurant offers outdoor dining. A huge plus during the pandemic! Bread basket contained two lovely looking pieces of bread. They were, however, tasteless. I had the fish and frites. Most of the frites were soggy. The cod was okay. My meal was served in a basket with a cotton napkin. I found that a bit strange. I also had chicken liver as my appetizer. It was good, but nothing special. I was more excited about the chutney that it came with- very nice. My friend ordered short ribs. There were no ribs. The menu and quality of Bar Frites has changed significantly. Some things to know. They got rid of their children's menu (which offered great deals). Now the only options for little children are adult-portion dishes (which are expensive). My favorite dish was the filet mignon with bearnaise sauce. They literally got rid of all their homemade steak sauces, expect peppercorn. And they overcooked both our steaks and our burgers. My mother in law described her burger (which looked horrible) as disgusting. We sent it back. The next iteration was identically burnt and inedible. In all fairness, they took it off our check. But they did nothing to make up for our dining experience. The kicker was when the manager yelled at the bus boys to clear our table, after which they just hovered over us and tried to take our drink glasses even though we were clearly not finished with our drinks. We were regular customers and really liked this place. But we won't be going in the future. read more

Atmosphere - Bar Frites is has a very nice decor with both indoor and outdoor seating. Food - I was expecting a lot more from the food. The food wasn't bad but wasn't worth the prices. Part of the experience was probably because the food was slightly cold when it came out. We ordered the grilled calamari and mussels as appetizer and fried chicken and hanger steak. We asked that the appetizer come out before the meal however, our server waited till all the food was ready to bring the food out and the appetizers were not hot. My husband liked the fried chicken and the mussels were not bad but the grilled calamari and the hanger steak with the chimmichurri were rubber/ tough and bland. However, on a positive note, my daughter, who is a self proclaimed shirley temple connoisseur said it was one of the best she ever tasted :) Service - The service was the main reason that I am giving Bar Frites two stars. As I mentioned by the time we got the food it was slightly cold, and I can't even say it's because the waiter was busy and we had to flag him down to pay for the bill. Doing rainy Saturday errands with my daughter. We decided to go to Bar Frites when we finished. Arrived there around 1:40pm without a reservation. Restaurant was packed; didn't expect great table since we did not have a reservation. We were seated at a table for 2 next to a party of 8 or 10 women and an empty table for 4 on the other side. The seat directly next to our table was empty where the group was seated, but a woman returned from the restroom to join the group & was perpendicular to our table and practically seated on top of our table. We saw the ladies commenting about how close we were, and we also were not comfortable. We asked to be moved. Took us to table right by the door where ppl waiting for tables were standing by the table. We said we would eat at the bar. Were seated at bar around 2pm. Bill was $210. Left 18% tip. Around 3:40pm we were told by bartender that ppl were waiting to be seated at the bar...basically inviting us to leave. By that time there were plenty of empty seats at the tables. No one was waiting at the door. We always frequent Poll restaurants and have had several special celebrations in private rooms @ Hendricks Tavern. Just ate at Hendricks last week. Regularly eat at The Bryant. This is the second negative review for a Poll restaurant in 6 months' time. The last was for Bryant & Cooper. Today's experience would never have happened at The Bryant which is on par with Bar Frites. Disappointing. read more

The burger smelled bad! Not aged but spoiled. The waiter said that the beef was "aged". I mentioned to the waiter that we actually shop and buy meats and cook. I've never had a homemade hamburger smell the way this did and to be completely honest I would not and did not bring their hamburger home to my dogs. Everyone has heard of Bar Frites, it's a Long Island go-to for brunch. A group of 7 of us came here for brunch on a Sunday afternoon. We had a reservation, and we still had to wait 25 minutes to be seated because the restaurant was packed. Once we were seated, it was in a crowded circular table (that wasn't that spacious for us all), in a tight space on top of that. We weren't really sure who our waiter was because 3 different people came for our drink order, our food order, and to check up on us. Once we placed our drinks order, we went right into ordering our food. Not going to lie, there was a sense of being rushed our entire meal. I understand they are busy, however I don't think its polite to rush customers out of the door. Everyone in my party ordered a different item. I opted for the Salmon Eggs Benedict & home fries. I've had this at other brunch spots and am a huge fan. When my food came out, the home fries were cold. Because I was hungry, I didn't think too much of it. The food overall was "okay." Nothing special and nothing bad. I think in the future I wouldn't come on a weekend and I would order something different. The staff was okay, but again because it was busy, they took longer to get us refills or anything else. Interior: Open concept, super trendy and nice! I met up with several friends for a night out at bar frites I was being escorted to my table in the rear of the restaurant when a dog brushed up against me. I have severe allergies and did not appreciate the dog in the restaurant being led to a table right next to mine. I requested at the table for myself and my friends be away from the dog instead of moving the dog and the dogs owner. They moved myself and my friends to a table near the front door without the special elegant dining experience. I was very unhappy with the way I was treated and I won't be going back there. read more

I made a reservation through open table and when I got there We waited at the hostess stand for some good five minutes until finally a waiter sauntered up to us and asked "who you looking for?" I told him I was "looking" for a table and that I had made reservations for four for a booth. I saw there were a few booths but a bunch of people walked in right after us and went straight over and sat down, so it's a free for all when seating is concerned. The person who is supposed to be the hostess, Carolina, finally decided to show up and started to take people. I had already walked halfway inside the restaurant so of course she overlooked us so I had to go back to the hostess table and repeat that I had a reservation for four. I gave her my name again after giving my name to the waiter before - no one even glanced at the book to check my name for reservation... But moreover she yelled at me for not waiting for her to seat us. Excuse me?? That ruined my meal from the start, even beyond that they told my other two friends that I had not shown up yet when they asked for me at the hostess podium, and then that they got mine and my friends order wrong, and that the booth was right next to the kitchen, my least favorite place in a restaurant, and that the food was mediocre but charged as if it were Boulud... I used to think them charming, the first time I came here. Now I find them not really all that worth the aggravation. Our waiter did try to make things better but really it was not enough to want to return again. Oh and what happened to bringing bread to the table? Not very French of them.... Shame. read more

They never had many French food options to begin with, but we used to come here for the quiche for brunch, which was one of the few options in that theme and was delicious. We made a trip here today for that dish specifically, and it is no longer on the menu. The place is essentially only French in decor at this point, with the exception of the escargots, none of the food on the menu is French. They serve basically the same slightly inflated priced American fare you would find at any other Gillis and George Poll restaurant, like Hendricks Tavern. The food is still on the good side of average, and the service is pretty standard, but they've essentially done away with the only part of this restaurant that made it more unique and worth a separate trip to. read more

I've been to Bar Frites numerous time in the last few months because the foods good and the drinks are good as well. But, after the third or fourth time going I started to realize a lot of things that were off. Does everyone know that you have to pay for them to bring bread to the table ?! Or is that just something they include on the bill hoping you don't notice. Second, my friend and I ordered virgin cocktails and paid the same price as normal cocktails ?! So $12 for seltzer, tonic, and maybe some mint leaves ? Third, this was mentioned already but after being in the restaurant the fire alarm went off and we had to wait for the firefighters to arrive for them to turn them off which took over 20 mins ? After paying a $200 bill not even a complimentary drink or comp or next time coupon for dining was given. That just shows that the manager has no idea how to appease the customer for dining (or might not even care) and most people will go but don't return second time. I've known of this place for years and years but never tried it until my 25th birthday. Overall, it was exactly how I expected it would be: high-end crowd, good food, but nothing extraordinary. I wanted more of a "scene" rather than "foodie" experience, so I'm glad this was my dinner pick. The appetizers were just okay, nothing great. My family shared the grilled calamari and beef carpaccio. They were rather plain in my opinion. The entree assortment around the table included the pappardelle bologenese, fish and frites, caramelized sea scallops, and braised short ribs. The fish and frites were good, super hot, and super fried. The pappardelle bolognese pasta was fresh and tasty and the sauce was very meaty which was nice. Scallops were okay, I was more of a fan of the mushrooms that came with it and thought the sauce could be a bit creamier. The weakest entree was the short rib, which was a little bland in my opinion. For dessert we all shared the gateau fondant au chocolat (molten chocolate cake) and the strawberry napoleon. The cake was good and of course, who doesn't love melted chocolate inside chocolate cake?! The strawberry napoleon was sad, but I'm Russian so my napoleon standards were high. It was basically a stack of crackers, strawberries, and whipped cream. MEH. I really don't like how much I'm bashing Bar Frites in this review, IT'S NOT A BAD PLACE AND I WILL GO BACK, but my internal foodie/chef is overly critical at times. However, my ONE pet peeve was that we told the waitress at least four times that it was my birthday, and I didn't get a single candle. The server Arian G decided to come to the table to tell me I needed to tip more.. he said 10% isn't enough. He proceeded to keep going on and on about it after I told him 10% was fine. Very disappointing this time. Have eaten here many times before and although crowded and loud, the food and service were good - not this time. Waiter was not responsive or attentive. Had to ask for water and bread 3 times - and that was before we got our meal. Kitchen was out of our choice of sliced filet mignon so had to get something else. All of our dishes came to the table at different times - the slowest to arrive was a salad! Again, our server never checked back with us and I again had to ask another one for water twice. Filet mignon sandwich (from a different cut) and short rib sliders were both on the overcooked and tough side. Salad with shrimp was ok (hard to screw that up). Very disappointed with the quality of the meat and the service this time. Hope things will improve. Based on past favorable experiences, we will go back - but had this been our initial visit, I doubt we would try it again. read more

Came here for lunch with my sister. Not impressed. We were sitting right by where everyone (staff) hung out. When I go out to eat I request a booth for privacy. I don't like when people can see me eating, nor do I like to see other people eating. Servers just standing in one area in front of my seat were awkwardly placed and weird. Never seen that at a restaurant before. Plus our server wasn't very kind, nor did he make us feel welcomed. He was cold & bitter. Food? We ordered the tacos as an appetizer and it was decent. But not something I would go back for. Then I got the peppercorn hanger steak with truffle fries. The steak wasn't good. It wasn't satisfying, it wasn't tasty and it wasn't flavorful. It was pretty disappointing for being a little expensive. Truffle fries - that's what actually made me decide that I wouldn't come back. I've had truffle fries in several different places and they've been good. Here, I could barely eat it because the smell was so strong. When I did eat a few, it was a strong odor and a strong taste. You won't taste the fries, you'll only taste extreme amounts of truffle. read more

My boyfriend loved his meal, the French dip, but it was rib (who can mess up a rib). However, after two sangrias and a glass of of wine. The waiter cut us off. We made reservations a day prior to which it was confirmed, however, upon arrival they did not have a table for us. Which was annoying but after a 10 min wait our table was ready. The food was 3/5 at best. Nothing was seasoned properly. Calamari was falling apart after dipping it in sauce. Pizza felt soggy in some parts. The filet migon and steak were cooked perfectly with the unfortunate news of not being seasoned properly at all (it was dry). I love Bar Frites! The food is always good, the waitstaff, especially Jack are fantastic and the prices are pretty fair for the North Shore of Long Island. I love the Chinese Chicken salad and the oasted organic chicken. The mashed potatoes and the french fries are awesome. The Pappardelle is pretty great too. Definitely order an iced cappuccino--it is the best I have ever had! Chairs are not very comfortable. That is my only complaint! read more

The place was packed when we went but we were seated quickly. They have a great priced pre fixe menu. The chicken club sandwich and sliced steak sandwich are so delicious. It is pretty loud in there, so if you're looking for a quiet lunch or dinner, be advised. But it is a great place to have drinks and conversation with family and friends. read more
