I first used Barbara's flowers Bergen street location for a Funeral. The arrangements they sent were beautiful that time. However, DISSAPOINTED! First the guy on the phone, what an attitude. He literally said to me, " buddy I've got 5 lines ringing I dont got time for this your stuff is coming. Yelling at me every time. I spent almost 160 dollars on valentine's arrangement, but I was really better off getting supermarket flowers! Bottom line: Flowers came wilted, some were broken off the stem leaving a pile of petals. stems of almost all the flowers looked TOTALLY ROTTED these flowers will last 1-2 days maybe? I was looking for a Thanksgiving gift and figured flowers would be great. I searched for shops around my girlfriend's work area, but the shops didn't have what I was looking for, until I stumbled across Barbara's. And so, I ordered flowers the night before the day of delivery. Everything went smooth, although the next morning, I received three additional payment receipts for some odd reason. In the special instructions, I asked if the delivery could be between 2 PM - 2:30 PM, since that was the ideal time around my girlfriend's work schedule. My girlfriend sent me a text msg and a snapchat of the flowers at 12:50 PM. Now, initially I would've taken off a star in this review because the store didn't adhere to my instructions. But, it's hard to do so over something minor. It wasn't a big deal if they delivered early as I can assume they must've had multiple deliveries to make and my order was along the way. My only concern was if my girlfriend wasn't available to receive the flowers firsthand. The flowers are beautiful and I couldn't be more happy. Reasons why this place is a gem (and also why I don't want to live anywhere but New York): 1) It's a reasonably priced florist. 2) This shop opened in 1902. It's over a hundred years old! 3) The owner told me Maria Callas grew up upstairs and that her brothers first owned the shop. Are you kidding me?! This is fantastic! Ok im giving an update the flowers weren't delivered until 5:40pm bc they had to wait for my cowoker to get home. So even though im super annoyed about the time, I was pleased that it was delivered even after the shop was closed and the flowers were beautiful. That is the only reason why I upgraded the rating. I appreciate that they're a struggling mom n' pop business especially with internet deals offering much better deals and delivery prices, so with my brother's insistence I patronized Barbara's for some Mother's Day flowers. Yeah, I don't think I'll do that again anytime soon. The good thing about going to a shop as opposed to online is that you can easier customize your flower order. I took that as another advantage before entering Barbara's, but was then told two different stories while ordering. The ornery lady taking my order (I believe her name was Pat) told me that for a certain reasonable price that I could get lillies with some other nice mixes so I was sold! But then when I told her I wanted orange or yellow mixed with the others she informed me that I MIGHT get the colors I want. Huh? "But I'm paying a deposit in advance and you have the flowers here. Can't they just save the flowers since I'm a paying customer?" She replies that they can only work with what they have in stock. After another go-around at trying to understand this nonsense, I just decide to 'go with God' hoping they wouldn't screw up my order. Three days later, on Mother's Day, the place is in chaos with people in there either picking up orders or trying to get last-minute ones in, and there was next to zero coordination to get pre-pay customer orders out the door. I didn't mind waiting a bit, its a busy day, but have a system in place, please! As I walk in I actually see my order waiting there ready to be picked up, but there's no clear person who I should speak to. The Pat lady is tripping that so many people are present and takes her time chatting it up with her homegirl and makes a small order of three small cut roses for her, instead of adding some organization to the place. She's not the only one complicit - the dudes in the office seemed to have given up as well. These folks need some leadership! Where's Barbara? I suppose it's like looking to complain to Popeye about bad chicken. Anyway, my order ends up not having yellow or orange lilies, but only plain boring white ones along with purple. So okay, it looked good, but it's not what I wanted...but at least it was mostly presentable - though I wish some of them weren't already dying. (I'm almost done ranting...I promise). After 30 minutes I finally get my order and I'm out the door...but as I'm walking I realized, even though no one else did, that in having to take matters in my own hands that I walked out the door with the wrong order! I circle back and correct it (even though that one was more expensive than my own) and head home vowing never to return. I retract that statement now, because I would return, but only for a small bouquet for my special lady not for an expensive order. They are a neighborhood institution, and I'm glad they're still around despite gentrification, but they've go to get their act together. read more

Where do I start? The flowers appeared nicely arranged and good but after further inspection I noticed something different. They were poor in the sense they were falling apart and even the pink roses had some yellowing. I must say they were not worth the expense and upon calling politely to voice out a concern I was treated with a defensive owner. I tried to explain that the flower arranger could've handled the flowers maybe poorly or the travel damaged them. The owner was more focus on the cost of the flowers as to the more expensive the better treated they are therefore buy at your own risk. As a business owner I suggest you are able to handle criticism and build on it to better your business instead of dismissing it and getting defensive and to an extent verbally aggressive. I appreciate the gesture that my boyfriend put behind the purchase of these flowers but I will suggest him to shop elsewhere in the future. These concerns were based on standards I have from other shops like flowers.com where most of their flowers are just starting to bloom and are vibrant. I never got an arrangement as in quality of that found in Barbara's flower shop. read more

I just have to say that I am thankful that I found this flower shop. My mother died 12/6/15 and this is the second shop I went to. My family members and I were impressed when we walked in because you can smell the fresh flowers. We were invited to sit down and look through the books to choose from many selections (4 of us). The flower spray we selected was delivered the day before the funeral which is perfect. The flowers were designed exactly as shown in the book. This florist made me cry on my wedding day. Let me explain: I got married on the first of September with a very simple, small, outdoor ceremony. The only flowers I wanted was a small bouquet of dark red gerbera daisies. My sister and I called to request them two weeks in advance, and called back to confirm a week in advance. Both times we were told it would not be a problem, and that they would be able to get the flowers. We called the day before the wedding, and were told they had been bought, and were ready to go. We asked about the color, and the gentleman said "dark red, burgundy, very beautiful". The day of the wedding I went to the shop to pick up the bouquet on the way to the salon to get my hair done, so we could put one of the flowers in my hair. The flowers the florist brought out to show me were bright pink (think bubblegum) gerbera daisies. They got the type of flower right, but the color could not be further from the classy, romantic, deep red we had ordered. I hate pink, especially the tacky shade of barbie-doll-accessory pink these flowers were. I explained that there must have been some mistake, that we had ordered dark red daisies, and had been told that they had been bought and were ready to be picked up. The gentleman at the shop looked at me blankly for a long minute and then told me that pink was the best they could do on short notice. Short notice?! They had two weeks to buy 12 flowers! He said that it was hard to find exactly the right type of flower before Labor Day weekend. Tears started welling up in my eyes, and I explained that these flowers were for my wedding in 4 hours, that I wasn't fond of the color, and that I needed a bouquet to hold while I got married. The gentleman stared at me for another long minute, then told me "good luck". I walked out the shop, and started crying in earnest on the sidewalk. At that point my sister pulled up, and took me to the salon as I sobbed in the passenger seat. She, heroically, ran all over Brooklyn in 95 degree heat to find me some other flowers. We didn't end up finding the flowers that I wanted, but they were alright. The most frustrating - and telling - part of all of this is that when we called the day before my wedding to confirm that the flowers were ready, we were lied to. If he had just been upfront about not being able to find the correct flowers, we could have called around to other florists and tried to find an acceptable alternative. Instead, I was lied to, and was offered no apology or acknowledgment of wrong doing. I will never go to this florist again, and I would recommend that you don't, either. read more
