This was a last minute visit before I left for the airport as I wanted to try a famous coffee stop before I left. Friend suggested Barista. The location was cute and ordering was simple. We both opted for a small Americano which was made in front of us. I'm not sure about the price as he paid . The condiment station is nearby and offers a few sugars/creams. I thought the Americano was incredibly strong. Usually I drink it black with no sugar or cream but had to add cream to the version here. Not a bad thing but the Americano didn't taste as smooth. Glad I'm able to say I visited this coffee shop and hopefully will be back to try other items. read more

Great coffee drinks made with great coffee beans, from various roasters. (4/5 green stars) Made a detour to visit Barista and had a latte and it was very good. That's all really :) I'm also giving Barista 4/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: * Coffee beans are from roasters that have direct trade relationships with farmers and most encourage sustainable growing conditions. * For example, Intelligentsia, a pioneer in the direct trade movement. * Or Stumptown, who pays up to four times commodity prices for their green coffee and use compostable packaging. * Other roasters represented at Barista, including Ceremony and Ritual are also responsible about sourcing beans. * I believe that Barista's regular milk is not organic, unless they've changed this. * However, they do have alternatives such as rice and almond milk. * Their mochas are made with Valrhona chocolate. Nice afternoon pick me up! The Cortado is a nice way to taste the quality of their beans, but still have a little bit of milk. The service was very friendly and there were a couple people there who were clearly regulars. This specific location has an interesting set up. The shop itself is located in an indoor, atrium-like spot. But most of the atrium seems to belong to Barista, since they have tables, silverware/bussing station, and water available for customers. It was a cute, relaxing spot to sit in. The downside is that it doesn't feel like you're in a coffee shop, which I did kind of want. Nevertheless, the coffee was good! read more

This cute little coffee shop offers many different types of coffee including their own specialty teas and other brewed drinks. The cashier recommended the hazelnut coffee which was alright. The espresso coffee in the cortado had an interesting natural sweet taste to it. They were both drinks we had to adjust to but overall enjoyed by the end. The customer service is at a 5 star easily but for the coffee itself it's a solid 4. Two employees were running this small shop and it didn't seem to be busy when we were there near closing time. Located inside the great gadsby building, it took us a little bit to actually find it. 5 stars for coffee (my favorite so far compared to Stumptown, Casestudy and Coava) 2 stars for service/attitude. In a town full of great coffee shops it is difficult to stand out but Barista is the one. Offering up espresso shot that is bold strong and unapologetic, I had one of the best Americano during my short stay in Portland that included over 8 top coffee joints. By far my favorite cup of coffee is from here but also my least favorite in terms of customer experience as the barista was cold and unfriendly. Simple eye contact, smile, a bit of chit chat or some basic barista manners (Starbucks training anyone) could be an easy fix and bump this review up to 5 stars. Space wise the place is well curated offering a movie scene level of coziness and style unmatched by others. I really enjoyed this place and hopefully upon future visits the barista improves on her attitude and I could give it the 5 star that I wish to give. read more

I don't drink coffee but I have a love for mocha and latte, but only once in an occasion. I like to stop by this Barista in the Pearl location. The café is set in a lobby of a rather historic building that is beautifully renovated in an architectural sense. It has the Portland hipster vibe. In a partly cloudy partly sunny lazy day, sitting outside the terrace is a good way to pass time, it is almost as if a window providing you a glimpse into one of the most lively streets in Portland, people come and go, which is interesting. Back to the drinks, I love their signature Oregon hazelnut latte and Valrhona mocha the best. Both hot or iced Oregon hazelnut latte are so good. The hot one is more silky and the nutty flavor goes so well with the coffee. It is the drink that I will always come back to. The mocha is so good too and they use Valrhona cocoa, which is premium quality, the bitterness of coffee and cocoa gives a very rich taste, and the right amount of sugar enhances and draws out the flavor for making a perfect balance of a delicious drink. The two signature drinks I had deserve 5 stars, the reason I gave 4 because of inconsistency. It could be so rich and thick (which I like) one day and a bit light the next. Other than that, I am pleased with my experience here. This coffee was a spiritual experience. I did NOT expect the hazelnut syrup to have the perfectly subtle, not too sweet, raw taste that it did. Serious coffee for serious people. When visiting a shrine or temple, there are certain rituals to observe. Purify yourself with water at the chozuya, approach the shrine, bow, throw your coins as an offering, bow, clap twice, spend several moments in quiet contemplation and prayer, bow and back quietly away. This process reminds me quite a bit of my recent visit to Barista. And while there is no bowing, it very much seems like a place perfect for any zealot's coffee tour of Portland. Many people are downright reverential about this place and their dedication to coaxing the best cup of coffee out of their beans. Even their website notes, "Preparing coffee is not just something that we do in between gigs or something to get us through college." It is part passion, part obsession. But for me, it all seemed a little much. Coffeehouse Northwest has been my favorite high end coffee shop for years, but it certainly pushes my personal threshold in the areas of expense and Portland presentation. But I love it so and continue to find more and more items on their food and beverage menu to enjoy. The new challenger for my affection is Floyd's in Old Town. At both of these places, I've been truly touched by the warmth and friendliness of the staff. At Barista, they were efficient and polite, but certainly down to business, although the counter person's response to every order was "nice" or "sweet." What I love more than coffee is chocolate, so I ordered the Valrhona Mocha. It was nothing short of excellent. They use beans from a number of roasters, not just Stumptown, and are one of the few locations in Portland that offer vacuum pots for brewing. That is if you don't mind spending $8 or more for your drink. So they delivered on their promise of excellence, but just keep in mind that it is more than a cup 'o joe. It is very much an 'experience.' Bowing and quiet contemplation with your beverage are probably in order. Say a little prayer for me. read more
