BEWARE OF DOG GROOMER WHO IS INCOMPETENT WITH DEPLORABLE CUSTOMER SERVICE I have a Samoyed dog who loves to swim. It is his favorite activity. He swims everyday - it helps keep him cool and it is good exercise. However, the downside of him swimming is that even though he gets brushed everyday, he still gets matted. To supplement the daily brushing, I have been taking him to Barks & Bones for a couple of years now. The owner has always been communicative and has provided good customer service, with now the exception of his staff, in particular a lady named Alex. The customer service experience that I received from Alex was worse than what you would get at midnight from an Arby's in Compton. At my most recent visit to Barks & Bones, when I dropped off my dog, I acknowledged that he had matted fur around his collar area, which is difficult to reach and said that it was fine to shave out if necessary, but to hide/cover it like always so that it isn't noticeable. When I pick up my dog a few hours later, his butt/backside is completely shaved. First, I never authorized the groomer to shave his butt. Second, the decision to shave his butt was completely unnecessary and just plain lazy - when he gets diarrhea, we use small trimmers/clippers...they could have easily used a combination of scissors, brushing, and small delicate clippers, but instead they took a lazy, and potentially malicious route by shaving it. It shows a lack of compassion, communication, and competence. When I called to express my dissatisfaction, Alex was extremely defensive and rude. I hope that the calls are recorded so that the owner can hear the things she said to me. Instead of taking any accountability, she defended their actions. She even said at one point that he should be completely shaved, which again highlights her lack of competence as his main body/back has no matting. At one point I asked Alex if they don't know what to do and how to run the shop when the owner is not around and she responded with, "no, WE, do everything around here anyway" which is sincerely hope is not the case for the benefit of the helpless animals and customers alike. Additionally, I had/have another appointment on the calendar for a future date and at one point, unprovoked, Alex said "OK cancel", I said what are you cancelling and she said your next appointment. I told her that I never asked for my appointment to be cancelled and told her I would keep it for now as long as the owner is present...she was just cancelling the appointment out of immaturity and spite. A common miscommunication on their part is understandable, even though my poor dog's fur will never grow back the same, but you need to take ownership for your mistake, not double down on it like Alex did. She has no business operating in a customer-facing role. Since the owner has provided good customer service and communication in the past, I will open the door for him to rectify the situation and change my overall opinion and customer experience with Barks & Bones. We've been taking our dogs to Barks and Bones from a few years now! We love our dogs and wouldn't trust them to just anyone (NO WAY!) so when we found this boutique we kept going back. Barks and Bones always calls to remind us of our appointments which we schedule every two months or so. They're located close the the Ontario Mills and Victoria gardens malls which allows us to go shop or eat while we wait if we want. The staff is always friendly and nice and they seem to be dog lovers! The shop is clean and we were so happy to see that they survived the downtime during the pandemic! They give our dogs great cuts and always add cute scarfs and good smelling fragrances! The price is just right and competitive with other dog grooming businesses as well. This place was amazing from start to finish. They even give you a courtesy call to remind you of your appointment. Upon arriving, they communicate to make sure your pup gets the exact cut you want. They are very friendly and welcoming. They called around the time they said they would to pick up my boy. They explained how the cut went and how I can help get my pup a little more comfortable during it. I know he can be super difficult with scissors around his mouth but they still did an amazing job and did exactly what I wanted. He looks so good! But I decided to go anyway since the associate said it will be closer to $60 since my german Shepherd only weighs 50lbs. I was unable to pick her up so I had my father get her and they charged him $75. I was appalled at the price so I went in to speak to the manager. My 3 Shih Tzus have only been to ONE groomer in their lives. I used to take them to the Dog Zone located in Monrovia which I loved. I've taken previous dogs to PetSmart which I will never do again! (PetSmart is pricey, they don't do a good job and your dog is there for the entire day!) However, since we moved it was not practical to keep taking them to Monrovia just to be groomed so I was in search for a new groomer. Note, that I called three other grooming places before I chose Barks & Bones. My three dogs came here over the weekend for "The Works" (includes a bath, shave, nail trim, anal glands, tooth brushing & ear cleaning). I had an appointment at noon, but they called me at 11:00AM stating that I could bring them in earlier if I wanted so I arrived around 11:30AM. After I dropped them off, I received a call from them asking permission to cut out a matt/tangle behind one of my dog's ears. They also asked if it was okay to trim their ears. Anyway, they called about 2 hours later saying that they would be ready to pick up in 10 minutes. When I came to pick them up they had cute pink bows on and a scarf. Each dog was $50, but I had a 10% coupon from my Yelp app. My old groomer charged $43, but that's okay. The other places I checked were quoting me $50-65 per dog. I guess I can save money on gas! They are also a boutique and sell leashes, clothes, costumes etc. They also have a Facebook and Instagram account you can check out. Anyway, loved how they cut my dogs' hair and we will be back next time. read more
