I'm conflicted about Barn Joo but ultimately feel like the service was a big factor. We came in on a Thursday night and the place was packed. Off the bat, I wasn't impressed with service. We were standing at the front without any acknowledgement from staff. When a staff member came by, he greeted the party behind us as opposed to asking who came first. When we were seated, we did not have a server come by and waited until someone asked if we had been helped. The waiter also seemed pretty stressed out and it was apparent they didn't know which tables to serve. We ordered several popular dishes. We ordered the japchae, spicy pork, soft shell crab, and corn cheese. Everything came out fairly quickly. Everything was nicely presented, but nothing was particularly outstanding. The corn cheese was underwhelming for me. I felt it needed more cheese to really have that cheese string pull. The japchae was unfortunately my least favorite. It was a little too salty and overwhelmingly oily. While the spicy pork was good, I also felt it was a little too salty. I did enjoy the soft shell crab which was nicely cooked. The wait wasn't too bad for 7pm on a Saturday night. We were seated upstairs, it's loud and noisy both downstairs and upstairs but filled with lots of energy. Started off with crunchy tofu, veggie japchae, nutty green salad and a ginger limeade. We both walked all over and walked back and forth on the Brooklyn bridge so we came with an empty belly and parched too. The limeade ginger was so refreshing and nicely quenched my thirst. The crunchy tofu was nicely crispy and soft on the inside, lots of flavors, the fried kimchi garnish was a good balance to the crunchy tofu. The veggie japchae was delicious, nice peppery kick and lots of great veggies. The nutty salad was topped with sweet crunchy almonds and the dressing gave it great depth and flavor pops. Wondering imagining how we could get one of these in Michigan, would be so great in Ann Arbor or in Detroit and would be a frequent haunt for me for certain. There's nothing like it in MI at all. Maybe some food for thought to the owner. ;) It's a Monday night and we are back for more. We were seated right away, upstairs too, downstairs seems too chaotic for me. It's before 7pm. We ordered the limeade ginger again, the crunchy tofu, nutty greens and this time trying out the truffle fries and the popcorn chicken. The crunchy tofu didn't disappoint and were just as good as Saturday night amidst the hustle and bustle of the weekend frenzy. The popcorn chicken was also nice and crunchy and went nicely with the smoked sriracha BBQ sauce. The nutty salad was as good as I recalled from Saturday night, but I did have to ask for more dressing as it was rather sparse on the coverage the first round. The truffle fries didn't meet my standards for truffle fries tonight. They smelled of truffle oil, only faintly when they were brought to the table, but I couldn't taste the oil in any of the bites and the fries were over done for my liking. I like a nice golden yellow tint to my Idaho spuds. My hubby will eat any spuds since they are potatoes after all, but not me. I will be back again for some more crunchy tofu, nutty salad, popcorn chicken and some more adventures here in the future. Until my next visit NYC and Barn Joo. Came here at 3pm unexpectedly on our way to get arepas (Next door at costas very good). Saw they had a lunch special stone bowl for $25 with all the fixings! So filling and worth every bit! Stone bowl was nice and hot where the bottom rice had a nice crunch to go along with the meat and veggies. The egg was perfectly cooked where the yolk covered everything as well. My boyfriend wanted to try this place so we did and it didn't disappoint. It's extremely cute inside and the decor feels v rustic but modern. They do check for your vax ID if you want to sit inside but they also have outdoor dining available if you're unvaccinated. For drinks, I got the cucumber gintini and he got the purple rain. Super refreshing and now I want to order them everywhere I go. For our entrees -- I got the spicy seafood hot stone bowl (basc a dolsot bibimbap) and It was PERFECTION. The seafood to rice ratio was perfect and there's so much different types of seafood in the dish. It has the perfect amount of spice but if you're someone that's hesitant about spicy, I wouldn't recommend because it definitely has a kick. My boyfriend got the bulgogi main dish and I couldn't stop picking at his plate, The marinade that the bulgogi was made with has a slight sweet taste but it worked with the other salty elements of the fish. The mushrooms that the dish came with were cooked in a truffle oil and it changed the way i'm used to eating mushrooms. We also got the chicken buns and the sauce on top was really good, however there wasn't much meat in them. The service here is really great but keep in mind that everything comes out a little fast. My first review of 2020 and I want to star it with a 5-star gem! Found Barn Joo on Yelp while looking for some good eats near the Empire State building on. Saturday night. It was easy to make a reservation on the app while we were walking toward the restaurant 10-15 blocks away. I was surprised there was availability for a part of 5 at around 6PM. The place was packed when we got there and because we weren't going to grill at the table, they lead us up to the, get this, 3rd floor. I couldn't believe how many tables they had. All the staff we interacted with were welcoming and friendly, from the hostess, the gentleman who lead us to our table, our waiter, and I believe the manager. We ordered so much food because everything sounded good. Fried asparagus, crispy tofu, popcorn chicken, veggie pancake, truffle fries, vegetable hot stone rice, and beef cube steak. Second visit was as good as the first. Hubby and I stopped in for lunch while in Manhattan. We had to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination and photo ID to dine indoors, which is the case at all area dining establishments. Staff were all wearing masks and outdoor tented dining was available. We ordered Hot Stone Bowls with Bulgogi, which came with soup and Gochujang. I'm typically not a miso soup fan, but this soup was flavorful and not at all chalky. The bowl was steaming hot and the hot stone kept the rice and meat dish hot throughout the course of lunch. I asked for extra Gochujang and received it without delay. The tangy sauce is a must have with bibimbap. The meal was tasty and comforting, right down to the crispy rice at the bottom of the bowl. My friend and I stumbled across this little gem in the midtown while doing our restaurant hopping. We each had just had one arepas from next door. Despite our stomachs being half full (i.e. we were no longer hungry AF), we savored every bite of the tapas that we ordered here. The chicken, lettuce, and sweet/spicy sauce were all of the perfect portions for the bun. The mandos were equally joyful to the taste buds. The shell was crunchy and just mildly spicy but mostly sweet. Inside the mandos, you find vermicelli, vege, and shrimp. Not sure if this was done on purpose, but all of the mandos had a shrimp tail sticking out of it that also got fried to a crunchy texture along with the shell. Kind of a funny/cute thing! Last but not the least, my cocktail - the Barn Joo Passion, was heavenly! We had the BBQ chicken main dish with a side of rice, a shrimp tempura roll, and the hot and spicy pork dumplings. The soy barbecued chicken came with grilled vegetables, roasted potatoes, and grilled corn on the cob. It was garnished with a charred lemon and some overly crispy onions. It seemed like a dish that would come together in a unique and surprising way, but sadly it did not. It felt Americanized, and everything but the chicken was dusted with Parmesan cheese. The spicy dumplings also (although not bad) tasted strangely of pizza rolls. The waiter gave us attitude for noting that in the menu there were no cucumbers in the mojito. (We just wanted the drink remade..). I have come to this restaurant several times with friends but this is the first time I've ordered several dishes to share family style. I usually just order the japchae, which I think is alright but nothing to special. However, today, I ordered the soft shelled crab, hot stone galbi, Korean army stew, and shrimp tacos. I usually do not like eating soft shelled crab but I must admit I was quite surprised because I really liked it. The hot stone galbi was also delicious as it was a perfect combination of galbi, vegetables, and rice. I also enjoyed the Korean army stew but the pot itself was smaller than I would have expected it to be. The tofu stew was nevertheless still good. The tacos were also great with a decent portion size. The servers checked up on us frequently and were really great with making sure our water pitcher still had water in it. In fact, they would switch it out to give us a new pitcher if they saw that there was almost no water left, which I really appreciated! This may not be the most authentic of K-Town experiences, but you should've known that from the moment you saw the words "Korean gastropub." And that doesn't mean it isn't a good time. You've got to decide if you want: 1. The more affordable, more banchan, more Korean experience. 2. A meal that may cost a little more, but will deliver more attractive plates, more items that appeal to an American palate, and in my experience, far, far better service. If you want the former find a different spot, preferably a place that only exists on the second floor of a building around here. If the latter is your style, you're right where you need to be. Just know that if you have Korean friends they will be appalled at the prices, whereas they're pretty standard for a Manhattan dinner out. Don't be ashamed, either; both types of Korean meals have their place. This is an excellent introduction to Korean food for people that aren't as familiar, and even if you are familiar, Barn Joo has a lot of upside. Namely, the food is excellent and well-presented. I have eaten and enjoyed wings, pancakes, traditional Korean truffle fries, galbi, tacos, that mac and cheese-esque thing, bibimbap, japchae, and more. If I were you, I'd wash it all down with shots of soju and beer backs, but that's just because I'm not as into the soju cocktails. read more
