Stopped in while on a cruise. Always bittersweet to find a lovely spot and know it will be difficult to make it back. The beer was great, the beertender was very nice and helpful, the vibe was very chill, and the cat was entertaining (enough that it seems to be my only photo here). They had root beer on tap, which is the one soda my kid will try and it's always more fun when there's something more than water for him. You can't run a tab (not sure if this is part of AK's weird beer rules or specific to Barnaby), but it's easy enough to pay per beer. read more

What can I say Dennis was pretty amazing, even though is a mid weekday afternoon. Dennis was easy to deal and knew quite a lot of brewery side of the business instead of faking it. In my quest to visit every brewery in the state, I have been trying to get here...forever. A combo of weird Anchorage/Juneau flight times, plus restrictive brewery laws (mandated by our liquor-biased state politicians) have made this quite difficult. The location and ambiance of this brewery are incredible. It reminds me of the quaint little downtown breweries (like Tugboat) that you used to find in the nooks and crannies of downtown Portland that are all gone now. To compare the beer here to Tugboat is unfair though, the beer here is much better! Unlike a *certain* SE AK brewery, they allow tastes here! (as all breweries should) I had three different beers, and all were great. I think the alt was my favorite, but that might just be because I was looking for something more crisp. I guess if I could give any constructive criticism it would be that I was there were more crisp and refreshing beers on tap and little less hazies and other beers with big mouthfeel. Would have loved to see their take on a pilsner! Cherry on top for the ambiance is the friendly brew cat that roams the area. If you are in Juneau, this brewery is not one to miss! read more

So just to be clear, I was here ~6 months ago, on a cruise last summer - we just stopped at a *lot* of places during that trip, so I'm still catching up (getting close!) So it's certainly hypothetically possible that they went downhill in the past 6 months - but I don't think it's particularly likely, so I'm posting this now, anyway. As of 6 months ago when I was there, they had a decent sized list of beers they had available - ~8 were only available in cans/bottles (either to drink there or to take home), ~8 were available on draft, including in taster glasses, which you could get a la carte (biggest pet peeve at breweries: only being able to order one specific number of tasters). Tasters were $3-4 each, and were also, notably, 6oz pours (not that I *needed* more booze, coming from a cruise ship where I had a drinks package, but still, slightly taller taster pours than I'm used to.) It's very possible that none of the specific beers I tried are still there (it feels like the sort of place where everything rotates pretty frequently), but they had a pretty solid range of styles when I was there, and presumably still do. While I was there, I tried a tropical hopped stout (pretty good), the obligatory spruce tip blonde (tasty, though not extremely spruce-y), a hazy in the Pink Boots series (great, though my favorite in that series is still from Trademark Brewing in Long Beach, though admittedly I'm biased in that it's down the street from me), and a truly, absolutely *monumentally* good barleywine (aged 2 years in cherry brandy barrels!) They also had a number of interesting bottles/cans - I wanted to try several of them, but as I had made, and was making, a number of stops on that trip, I limited myself to taking home one bottle ($6.50) of their alder -smoked rauchbier (which I have subsequently, unfortunately, drunk, as it was also great. Wish more breweries in SoCal would realize how good rauchbier is!) They also sell one-pint mini-crowlers of their draft beers to go, which I thought was particularly neat. (It is *not* in a basement, by the way - they've moved into a ground floor space since then, with plenty of lighting. Also, thankfully, as someone who likes cats but is also pretty allergic to them... plenty of *air*.) As far as the tasting room - it isn't a huge space, but it is laid out well so that there's plenty of table space for people. They also have a very cute cat! Their cat was happy getting attention from visitors, but as it was an unseasonably warm summer for Alaska, it did not want to move out of *directly* in front of the fan most of the time I was there, which I also get understood. Anyway - I'd definitely make sure to stop in if I were ever back in Juneau, as again, I'm sure the beer list is completely different by now. (Heck, I have a feeling it would've looked fairly different even a week later.) read more

Barnaby was one of my favorite breweries on a recent trip we made to Juneau! Situated in downtown and very close to the port this brewery was an easy walk from our hotel. For this brewery I had two of their beers. One was a California Common beer, a very light kind of beer called the Mcsteamy. Refreshing and not too heavy this beer proved itself nicely with a fine flavor to it despite being very light. A well made common beer! After that I went the completely opposite route and got a stout. Bad Johnny was the next beer I had. It was a very enjoyable stout with it's chocolate and coffee features. On our trip to Juneau it was mostly rainy the whole time(still had a blast) so sitting down to a nice, dark beer was so fitting. Barnaby has fun hoodies and t shirts too! I bought one at the brewery. But others I liked were sold out. I went to the brewery's website however and was able to purchase the shirts I wanted however... so I imagine that came from a different inventory. Cruise ships are known for a lot of things, but good beer does not seem to be one of them. Although, if you're on an Alaskan cruise at least there's the option of a couple of taps from the formidable Alaskan Brewing Co., which - while good - definitely does not qualify as a microbrewery. Not to mention they now charge $20 for a shuttle from downtown Juneau to their tasting room! Enter Barnaby, a tiny, locally-owned, hard-to-find brewery-in-a-basement located on the main drag but just a couple of blocks up from the super-touristy area nearest the cruise ships. It was well worth the additional 2 minutes of walking. The space itself is a little utilitarian, brightly lit with fluorescent lights above. (The crafter in me wanted to put some muslin over them to soften the mood, hint hint, wink wink, nudge nudge.) The place was clean, though, and brightened up by local photographs and art on the walls, and a good selection of Barnaby schwag against one wall. But, of course, we came for the beer. And we were not disappointed. My strange brew loving hubby enjoyed a pint of Goods from the Woods, which he described as a Christmas tree in a glass as he savored every last sip. Being more of a malt-lover, I myself ordered their Bumbershoot Amber, a red ale / American amber with a smooth finish and those not-too-hoppy notes I love. The beertender was super friendly, allowing us to try a couple of sample sips before we ordered our pints. My only disappointment was that on a day when there were FOUR giant cruise ships in town only two other couples could be found at Barnaby. Come here, cruisers! The only thing that sets this place apart from Devil's Club Brewing Company is the service. The bartender was very rude and did not care to talk or answer questions about anything. Another "cruiser" here seeking to make the most of the in-port experience by ignoring the official excursions in favor of wandering around on our own. Our "thing" is to find local brews (and food and take pictures of buildings) so we were stoked to see a sandwich board for this place out on the sidewalk. Admittedly, we got a bit puzzled when we headed in, but it was all made clear by the notices on the napkin holders :) Eager to make the most of our short time, we ordered a flight so we could sample everything. And we liked everything, though I must mention the "Bad Johnny" stout especially and our absolute *favorite* -- the "Nosebleed" SAHTI! This junipery Finnish-style brew was a total surprise: neither of us had ever had it in all our beer sampling experience, and we loved it. Great stuff! The only shame is that we're too far away from this place to come back any time soon. But we will definitely look for it the next time we're in Juneau, and highly recommend it to both locals and visitors. (We were happy to see that although there was only 1 person there when we arrived, it was packed by the time we left! You're welcome...) TL;DR -- great stuff, have a flight so you can try it all. This brewery was not fully open on the day I stopped by (9/24/16). The location is tucked on the upper end of the business portion of Franklin Street in a suite downstairs in the basement. Location wasn't quite ready for prime time yet as their federal license had not come through, but it is anticipated they will be fully operational in 2017. They had ginger beer, root beer and nitro coffee available during their open house as well as some "gear" for sale. The ginger beer was very tasty. I wish the brewer Matt Barnaby the best of luck in his venture. It is nice to have beer options! (They will be Juneau's second brewery behind Alaskan Brewing Company.) Note: Matt's English-style barleywine won best-of-show at the 2016 Haines (Alaska) Craft Beer and Home Brew Festival. read more

Although they may be the smallest brewery I've ever visited in terms of beer output, their beers were quite good and interesting. I especially loved the sour I tried. Still Barnaby Brewing has its own charm and character that make it worth checking out when in the area. The tasting room is a little tricky to find in downtown Juneau, downstairs in what seems like a bright room in a basement of an office building with standing tables only. Unfortunately the day we stopped in many of the options I would have liked to try were not available so settled for a single glass as opposed to a variety flight. The Berliner style weisse is a good choice. They do also offer handcrafted sodas, which makes it kid friendly to bring the whole family. Cold brew coffee also gives customers another option. Worth a quick stop but likely not going to stay around too long. read more

SUPPORT LOCAL!!! Juneau was a port during my recent Alaskan cruise, and after 3 days of "Alaska Brewery", which is essentially the Sam Adams of Alaska, I was ready for something a bit more authentic. Enter Barnaby.... It's literally in the lower level of an unassuming small brick building about a 7-10 minute walk from port. Really has that new brewery/start up feel. These are the small craft breweries that craft beer snobs (like me) LOVE to support - and with good reason!! Also met the owner/master brewer and what a nice guy. The Goods from the Woods was a solid fave. Also tried and enjoyed the Lights Out Pale Ale and the Piggyback Porter. Would have sampled more but....Juneau has this weird law that you cannot purchase and drink more than (I think) 36oz of beer at a brewery?! Lame, and NOT this brewery's fault! So grab the tram up the peak, hike to the top, soak in the views, descend and make your way up Franklin street to Barnaby for that post-hike beer. It will taste all the better!!! read more

Alaska brewing has somewhat of a stranglehold on beer in Juneau, so it's nice to see that other breweries are popping up. This place opened up in spring 2017 and is a must visit for beer lovers in Juneau. Do yourself a favor and order all of the beers they have in 6oz tastings, making a flight. The Mcsteamy and Long Way Home were both outstanding. Very very solid pours. The blueberry pomegranate was also very tasty. Honestly, the only one we didn't enjoy was the barleywine. I'm not really a barleywine guy either, so don't let me steer you away from that if you are. Support this place though, I have a feeling they will be stealing some of those Alaska Brew taps in the very near future. read more

I had seen this brewery pop up on yelp before I had come to Juneau and throughout my busy weeks stay I was lucky enough to be passing by and stopped in for a pint. Its a cozy little spot off the road, so keep your eyes peeled. I was pleasantly surprised with the variety of beers that were being offered as well as non alcoholic beverages. I had a delicious amber ale that had a wonderful finish, and my gf had a ginger beer which was very refreshing.
