Our experience started out great we got seated with a party of 8 super quickly which was great for a Friday night. Our first server Joel was fantastic! He had our drinks out to us before we could even all get situated. The second server was a female and she wasn't as good, took a while to come take our order and messed up a few items. Joel kept checking in on us throughout the meal, kept refilling our drinks and even offered to take back an order that was wrong that we weren't going to send back. This place has one of the better beer menus I've seen in quite some time. I don't even remember all that I had, I just know every beer was delicious. The beers my friends had were fantastic too. The food was awesome. Their bratbürger (on a pretzel bun) is definitely something to try as are their chicharron nachos. The short rib poutine was good, but I'd say the weakest of the 3. So, on a Sunday afternoon with two daddy's in tow, we head on over to try out Barrelhouse 101, and try it we did! Each of us orders a beer flight. From sour to light, stout to hoppy IPA, we have a proper beer taste showcasing the variety that is possible in a humble bottle of brew. The selection is eclectic with both imports and local selections. While the order by number is easy, it would be nice to have the beers arranged by style, location, or alpha. Of course, with this selection, what real complaint can we have? Besides, the helpful staff was more than happy to help us navigate not just the beer but the menu, too. We're not just thirsty...we're hungry! - The chile relleno is interesting, not traditional, but still fun. - Fish and chips...just about as proper as I've had. - French fries - Just what they should be. Sure, these weren't coated in truffle oil, but they were a solid accompaniment for the beer. - Hot wings...I dare you...double dog dare you...the hottest on their list is full of flavor and you can feel each bite as it heads down to say hello to your gullet. Let's see, where do I start....the only reason I'm giving this place two stars is because they cooked my steak perfectly. The food was decent but nothing to talk about. Ahi tacos were overlooked and dry. My friend and I were in Ventura for a work conference and found this place on Yelp and it has good reviews so figured why not? Started out fine. Nice atmosphere. Took a little time for a server to come to our table but we weren't in a hurry. First we ordered chips and guac and we asked about the spicy Mac and cheese. Told the server that I can't handle much spice but I do like a little. She said that it was good and that she doesn't taste spicy in it. Let's just say it was so spicy, neither my friend or I could eat it. While discussing it with the server, she doesn't offer to get a different one. Instead she chuckles and proceeds to tell me that there's GHOST PEPPER in it! The menu says NOTHING about that nor did the server when I asked! Next, we asked for salsa to go with the chips and guac. Server said they don't have salsa but have tobasco...for chips!?!? The server was a bit of an airhead, if you can't tell already... Next we order dinner. My steak comes with mashed potatoes and a house salad. My friend ordered ahi tacos. Food came and the steak looked good but there was a ginormous mound of fries. I asked why there was fries when the menu says it comes with mashed potatoes and a salad. The server (a different one as the first one went on break) shrugged her shoulders and said, "yea they just gave you extra." Ummmmm, extra!? Fries aren't even supposed to come with it! Another airhead server...I told her I wanted the sides that I was expecting to have..she said ok and brought them out. Next, we were shocked about them not having salsa so my friend asked again (remember this is a different server). The server said, "yes what would you like? Buffalo?" Ummm...??? My friend said, salsa for the tacos and the server said they had pico de gallo. Perfect. Thanks. By this point, we are wondering if all the servers are high. Even the hostess looked high. The story is about to get better... We finish dinner and the bus boy comes t clear our plates (after about 15 mins of sitting there...server came by twice but didn't clear anything). We chatted with the bus boy for a minute and jokingly asked him if all the employees were high. The bus boy laughed and then said, "high? Are you asking if I have weed?" We were under he impression the server was being humorous but then realized his eyes were extremely glazed over and he could hardly even pick up the plates from our table. We ignored his question. He then said, "yes I am high." I said, "high on what?" He ten said, "wouldn't you like to know?" By this point, we wanted to get the hell out of there but that couldn't happen before the bus boy dropped some wooden tray in the table on top of the dishes he was attempting to pick up. He then got it together and walked away. I asked another bus boy if I could get change. He was extremely nice and friendly and probably the only sober employee in the front of the house of this place. We started to tell him about our experience and the server and the first bus boy walked up. The first bus boy started up again...this time he told us he is high on prescription meds...we were shocked. Server and bus boy said they would talk to the manager. We asked to ensure the busser does not drive tonight. Server apologized which was ironic because she did not appear to be sober either...both the server and second busser said the first busser is mentally disabled. That is completely okay and I am proud to see him working, etc. however this was unacceptable and somebody must get this young many some help or teach him proper etiquette if he really was not under the influence... Needless to say, this was the weirdest most bizarre experience I have EVER had and we will NEVER return here. I still can't believe we even paid for the meal. The best comparison to this restaurant would have to be YardHouse. Like Yardhouse, this restaurant has a large selection of beers on tap. Some very unique beers others that are the common everyday brand. It's a small restaurant so don't plan on bringing a large party to this place. It's very crampy, especially on the weekends there are times you are bumping into people. Good for the business owners, but bad for the customers just trying to get to the bathroom. I remember the food being over priced. I was with a party of 4 and we orders light appetizers. The cheese platter was okay, the price made it blah. It was almost $20 for 5 small pieces of cheese, some crackers and olives. WIll probably think twice before choosing to bring friends to this joint. read more

If you're looking for a cold beer and you care about the beer you're drinking. Go here. They have the best selection of craft beer in Ventura. Tried some IPAs that I hadn't seen anywhere else. Look at the pictures with all those taps! That's enough to make this place stay for a long time. Food has been decent. Classic cheeseburger on happy hour menu is good. Truffle fries are great. Onion rings look good but it's so much fried dough for one onion. It's like eating a cholesterol soaked doughnut. Fish & chips was ok. I say that because portion size of fish vs. chip is heavily outweighed by the spuds. Service. Hmm. It can be great. It can suck something awful. When the staff is overrun with customers, you could be forgotten. Empty glasses sit sad and empty on the table for a while. My husband and I were impressed to see Einstok on tap. It's an Icelandic beer that we've only had in bottles previously. They call it Barrelhouse 101 partially because it is situated right off the CA-101 freeway but also because there are over 101 microbrews on tap! That's right, a dizzying menu of lagers, pilsners, blonde ales, hefeweizens, fruit lambics, belgians, pale ales, IPA's, amber ales, and stouts amongst other types and not a one from the major national breweries like AB or Coors. If you are looking for a bud light, you're shit out of luck. So, yes, they have an amazing selection of beer. However, that is not all. Their menu can be described as upscale downscale pub food? Does that even make sense? Burgers are not just burgers but half pound bacon guacamole burgers served with truffle garlic fries on the side as an example. Absolutely delicious and gut busting. This place has become a regular weekly hangout for me and a couple of friends and coworkers, coming every tuesday for "$2 tuesdays" where one or two beers from their list are sold for $2 a pint until they run out. Wingman wednesdays are BOGO on their awesome wings (I'd easily say best wings in Ventura). Top it off with a second happy hour after 10PM on Fri/Sat and sometimes, barrelhouse just becomes the default place to be. read more

The selection of beer on draft at Barrelhouse 101 blows every other establishment that serves craft beer in Ventura out of the water. This place stands out because you can also purchase bottled brews (sometimes rare bottled brews) for in-house consumption. It doesn't hurt that the food here is pretty damn good too. I haven't had a burger that disappointed me yet. The chipotle aioli is so amaze. The service can be bad though, especially at the bar. My tip is to look at the beer menu ahead a time, move in and shout your choice at the bartender. read more

We started off with the appetizer Mac and cheese, which was a perfect app for 2. I also was starving, so I grabbed a side of sweet potato fries to start, a big portion for sure. My husband got the fish and chips, and they were obviously great as well. The portions are huge, so I def recommend sharing. We were stuffed! I had a party of 20 and had previously talked to a different place about seating us. They cancelled on us at the last minute. I walked into Barrelhouse feeling defeated and asked to speak to their manager. She was absolutely incredible. Not only was she able to accommodate us for 20 people, she also provided a heater and a cart full of napkins, utensils, condiments and straws. She was amazing. I just wish I could remember her name. The staff were also so nice and sweet. They made this birthday dinner possible and for that I am thankful. Also, their food and drinks are amazing. Their strawberry habanero wings and (I thinks it's called) California Philly Cheese Steak sandwich are delicious. It's so easy to start your own tab and close it whenever you want through your phone. A few of my friends really hyped this place up so I had to try it. This place is pretty cool if you want a good beer. You can't beat their selection since they have over a hundred beers on tap. This restaurant slash bar gives off a rustic vibe and has a relaxing ambiance Now getting down to the food. I ordered the garlic truffle fries and a Argentina style steak sandwich. The fries were ok but not so good it would make you smack yo mama. The steak sandwich was juicy and succulent but the pesto in the sandwich overpowered the flavor of the meat. I like pesto and I like steak but the two do not pair well in this sandwich. I did think it was a nice touch to serve the food on newspaper. The service was quick but there weren't many people there. So, walking in the door: good service, but put off by the establishment itself. However. HOWEVER... 100 beers. Listed. HUGE amount of those on TAP. My date asked for wine: no snobbery about wine in a beer establishment. Our waitress KNEW about beer, and knew well. With the que, I asked "what do you recommend to eat". A few questions, and we took her recommendations. Very, very, very good food. As in, really good. As in hearty, flavorful, and good. Really good. My date's food was just as good. With the opening of other "big box" places to eat, you might be tempted to go to those: skip them. This is, good food, good drink. I got what I expected and more here. Based on the reviews I read I expected the food to be mediocre. It was actually pretty good. I had the brat burger - a burger made with ground beef and bratwurst. It was good. I don't know if this "beef + sausage" trend is widespread but it is interesting. I recently had a burger that was beef and linguica. It was also good. So on to the main reason I came: BEER. They have a very good selection on tap. I track my beer on Untappd - I'm at somewhere between 550-600 unique beers. So I like to hit breweries and taphouses and try new brews. Sometimes I have trouble finding "new to me" beers. Not here. Score. read more

Big Breezy makes the best burgers on earth. Come hungry cause for $12 bucks, you more than get what you pay for. These burgers make a Carl's Jr. $6 burger look wimpy by comparison. The extensive beer menu is organized very nicely, but let the bartender know your style and let her surprise you. Prices are great and the truffle fries are to die for. The hotel I was staying at gave me a bad dinner recommendation and I was driving around looking for a new restaurant when I stumbled upon Barrelhouse 101. When I walked in I saw a long wall with 101 beer taps. Boy, I just got lucky. I sat at the bar and the bartender gave a laminated menu with food items one one side and tapped beer selections on the other side. 101 beers on tap...decisions, decisions. I described the type of beer that I like and she recommend a flight of 3 beers to sample. All 3 beers were good, and I settled on Krombacker, a nice German pilsner beer as my favorite. So I ordered a tall boy of Krombacker. Looking at the food menu I ordered a large pretzel with beer cheese dipping sauce. The pretzel was very good and paired well with the Krombacker. The bartender was very friendly and helpful sorting through the 101 beers. Too bad I was driving and could only have one beer. read more

This was my 4th visit here. The first 3 were easily a 5 star experience but this last time was more of a 2 or 3. The first few times I was here the service was good and the food was great. (I'd recommend "The Avenue" burgers, or the "Taphouse" burgers, they were both great. This last time I got "The Beacon" and it was charred and flavorless.) This time the service left much to be desired. Our waiter would literally disappear for 10-15 minutes at a time and then return seemingly chill and not too busy. Different people brought out our food and beers. Most of the time the food is good, and they have an awesome selection of beer at a reasonable price. This last experience left me not wanting to rush back anytime soon, but if I do go back I hope this last experience was only a one time thing. Every time I come back here it's worse. It looks like they're cooking the burgers (with toppings) ahead of time and then letting them just sit on the side until someone orders, they're dry and not fresh. Our server came by about every 15-20 minutes (it looked like he was out back smoking bowls between visits to our table). This place clearly looks to be mismanaged (if there's any manager at all on duty). The only good thing about this place now is the beer, but I can pay $9 for a glass of beer anywhere. She also was not really helpful with ordering as we ordered way to much food. I got the Cesar salad which was a bit bland but did not get the anchovies so that might have been why. we got the pretzel which was huge and only needs one sauce (fantastic and a must have) got the short rib melt, wow that was good. the side we got was the onion rings (HUGE) we also go the mac and cheese which was tasty but the cheese is not "strong: enough to be without something else felt as though the server should have let us know that maybe one dish should have been left off. the server also did not clear the table. EVEN when she brought the bill, brought back the bill to be signed...never cleared it. We have recently visited a couple more times. The beer selection and laid-back atmosphere are definitely a plus. I like the waitstaff and bartenders. The pub food was good but never great. I absolutely love the hot wings. I participated in the hot wing challenge, it's a huge week spot for me, so I always come here for their wings. I'm always willing to change my opinion, I raise the score from 1 to 3 stores. If my next visit is very good will give it another star. Cheers. Old: One star for the great beer selection. We went yesterday to this establishment. Friendly, efficient great service! We had the strawberry habanero wings. So crispy even with then being dunked in the sauce. The meat is moist and tender. Best wings!! The sauce isn't overly spicy. They were so good that we went back todayon our way home and got 2 more orders!! The short rib sandwich was on toasted/ grilled sourdough. Had a slightly spicy sauce to add to the sandwich. It really added the perfect zing. Good helping of meat, very tasty. It came with truffle fries, a tad on the greasy side. Tap house burger wasn't bad but the onion rings were large tender onions covered in a perfectly light crispy batter. Highly recommend The devil spears are bacon wrapped, pickles drizzled with honey served with a dipping sauce. If you like pickles. These are awesome. Best of all our server was knowledgeable about the beer menu and had some great suggestions. I appreciated her taste in beers especially since she shared my disdain for sours. I am a favorite spots to eat by the beach. I do not like the fact that they do not let you try the beer unless you buy it. Which is why I'm giving it for stars. But I have to say the food is amazing. It is not your basic for food and it has a twist to it. Their short rib fries with gravy and duck fat are to die for. I have never had anything like it and there Chorizo burger Is out of this world. Today I also had there and Ahi tuna tacos. Only do you get bang for your buck, but is the most tonight I have ever seen in a taco. The flavor of the blackened tuna in the sauce he put in it go well together. And my opinion it's one of the best tuna tacos I have ever had. I've stopped in to Barrelhouse a few times now on day trips to the coast. It's a solid offering of filling food and a great selection of beer, all in a pretty laid back atmosphere. The restaurant itself is pretty typical pub-grub in feel - inside tables, many with high pub chairs, a big bar, and some sports being shown on TV. A small patio wraps around the building, though it mostly enclosed with big ventilation windows. Perfect to shelter from any coastal breezes without losing a bit of feeling of being outside. Service has always been stellar at this restaurant. Friendly staff that has shown to know a decent amount of information about the beers served. It can be frustrating to dine at a beer centric establishment, but not be able to get questions answered about what's being served, but not here. The staff may not be experts, but they can hold their own and answer the general questions. The ordering system is simple - pick your beers, write the corresponding numbers on the dry erase mat, order with your server, and wait for it to be delivered to the table. Some beers run out and may not be marked as such on the menu just yet, but in a place with 100+ taps, it's going to happen at a rate that's too quick to keep up with. What I appreciate is that the staff stayed on top of it, so orders weren't taken and then met with being informed 5 minutes later that the order wasn't possible to fill. I can work with that. For food, they serve a pretty hefty selection of sandwiches and burgers. My favorite thus far is a portabella sandwich with avocado. I pair it with a house salad, as the salad is spinach based as opposed to plain old iceberg. That saves room for the over the top poutine fries with shortribs and cotija cheese. Definitely indulgent and something to be split. On other trips I've tried the mac and cheese and pork skin sides - both heavy, but delicious, and a great treat. In general, portions are quite large, and it's easy to walk away with leftovers, especially when adding in beer and an appetizer. One last note - this place is very dog friendly. The enclosed patio is a nice break for pet owners who may not always like being outside while they dine after a day at the beach with their pups. We brought our lab mix with us and she was greeted with water. We also ordered her an item off the "doggie menu" - plain chicken breast (other option is ground beef), which she loved. We skipped the "Bowzer" beer for dogs, though it's a cute idea. Recommended as a great watering hole and all around reliable food and service. read more
