No bar service. I went there on a weeknight the bar was full,the tables maybe half. I got a seat at the bar and the bartender didn't serve me or ask me what to order or even see or look at me for over 15 minutes, and I hate having to yell at bartenders so I left the place. She was ringing up paper tabs at the register and refilling existing customers' beers and just did not look or scan the bar for new patrons at all. Shen seemed a little overwhelmed. Maybe the owners should staff up or hire someone experienced. There are plenty of bars in the area one block up on Main St. to go to read more

Today was my first Visit to use my Axxess card at opening. Ordered right away for my 3yr old neice. Just one very nice waitress. She brought her lunch. We finally ordered and thinking it was taking awhile to make our burgers. Waitress said it was almost ready. 35 min or more in we asked about our order and again she said it was almost ready. About 6 min she comes and says the order never went in. Seen her put it in but not sure if it was sent. Manager came and apologized and said he would take care of neice food. And that was it! This place easily deserves the five stars given. I went on a Saturday night after leaving Institution in Camarillo because it was too busy, decided to head over to Ventura to have a few drinks every other spot was extremely full and happened to come across Barrelhouse 101. As we walked in we were greeted by Jenny and David at the bar. We sat at the bar as the group of people I was with thought we were only going in for drinks but ended up ordering their Strawbanero and Buffalo traditional wings.. AMAZING. Definitely recommend! My first impression was that the place was really clean and so were their restrooms(a definite plus), also they have one of the coolest and nicest people working there. Jenny and David are hilarious and we're on top of their game making sure we were OK. Honestly there personality behind the bar definitely made me want to come back. I came in for Sunday football game and So far my party of 4 waited 10 minutes before a girl said hi. Then took 15 mins to get waters to us then continued to disappoint. As we continue through the horrible service, and was trying to give the establishment some credit. I was blown away by the neglect that the waitress gave us. The Mac and cheese was cold, I'm waiting 30 minutes on a water refill. I will never come here again. Burgers here are legit. Great menu all around and the beer selection is awesome. Nice main seating area with plenty of TVs for sports. Patio area that is dog friendly. Service has been a bit hit and miss sometimes over the years, but it's probably cause the place is often packed and maybe the cooks were overwhelmed. But don't get me wrong, very friendly, hard working servers and they will treat you like royalty when they get to know you. Chipotle Aoli sauce is devine and did I mention the burgers??? Lol. Beer selection: Five stars. You name it, they have it. Both times I was there, the waitstaff seemed to be pretty familiar with the beers, and they have a truly impressive selection. Food: Three stars. Average quality for pub fare, with some somewhat-interesting options like shrimp tacos. The salmon sandwich with avocado was pretty impressive despite being impossible to eat without a fork (protip: blot the salmon or the oil will make the bun fall apart). The veggie sandwich was also pretty good. Service: Mixed bag. I've been for lunch twice; once the service was great and once I got completely forgotten after ordering a beer. I was drinking slowly and had nearly finished it by the time anyone came to get my food order, and the place wasn't busy at all. Ironically, the time with good service was when there was one employee working the bar and waiting tables, and she kept up with the few of us in the place. Ambience: Mixed again. Inside has some cool decorations and custom metalwork; someone had some serious cash to start this place up. But it's two blocks off Main St and doesn't really fit in on Thompson next to a gas station and across the street from a tire shop. One time when I visited, despite being open for business, all the lights were off as was the heat, and it was "cold" for SoCal--I needed a sweatshirt inside. The meh factor: prices. Seriously. If I wanted to pay $15 for a sandwich and fries and $7 for a pint of local-ish beer, I could drink it in Santa Monica where there's more to do. Or, I could pay less, drink similiarly good beer, and eat better food on the Ventura Pier upstairs at Ericsson's (though, admittedly, Barrelhouse has WAY more options beer-wise). Three stars because though I don't want to bag on any business that's helping fuel downtown Ventura's revival, this one is one I probably won't be back to. If I lived here, I might stop in for a beer every now and then. tl;dr: Go here if you want to try beers you never see on draft in Ventura. Otherwise, take a pass. read more

I've been here twice and both times were really great! The first time was on my birthday and they were really great with our larger party. The second time I went, we had dinner. Was at this place last week and will be returning. Frank was our waiter and was extremely knowledgeable with the beers. I inquired about a few and he steered me in a different and perfect direction. If the name scares you don't let it, but try the Avocado Honey Ale. Very good. The flight selection we chose was a hit with my husband who normally doesn't care for trying new beers. Lunch portions were big. I had the barbecued chicken salad and my husband had a burger. Started off with the garlic fries as an appetizer, which I would highly recommend. I was invited to come to Barrelhouse 101 for a Birthday party, I was meaning to try this new restaurant, especially since it claimed to have about 101 beers on tap. My first instincts, "this is Ventura County, half the beer is probably: Corona, XX, Budlight, Budweiser, Coars, and for the fancy crowd New Castle." OK when I arrived I was totally wrong, no signs of any Budweiser or such, instead I found a huge array of Firestone Walker Brews (I love that Brewery and also love how this restaurant supports local beer). Along with that brewery there was a huge selection of other CA beers, ranging from San Francisco to San Diego. Big props to that. Of coarse my favorite beer was there (Firestone Double Jack) along with enough Red and Sour beer to go crazy. Since I drove that night I had to control myself :-(. The food was also good, well at least what I had, onion rings are superb, and the pesto mushroom sandwich eggplant had great texture and flavor, went good with the beer. The prices were reasonable, again in Ventura County, restaurants tend to serve Budlight or Corona, so folks are use to cheaper prices. However this restaurant offers drinks beyond that, so be prepared to pay a little more than Buffalo Wild Wings (million times better than that), it's worth a try. Great place for people who enjoy real beer, there's enough hops for everyone to go around! read more

I always have a good time here! Nice, open atmosphere with an endless list of delicious beers on tap. Easy walk to the pier from here. The bartenders are always very nice and it is not too noisy like other bars (I like being able to hear my friends talk)! Although the staff is very nice, the food is terrible. The menu didn't really have many meals to choose from. I ordered the fish and chips. The fish was way too over-battered to the point that there was uncooked batter in the middle making it horribly mushy, and it was extremely greasy. I won't be returning. read more

Went to the car show downtown yesterday and decided to stop in with my brother and give this place another try. We sat at the patio/bar section so we could feel the breeze...(seemed like the inside was lacking air conditioning). Mario was the bartender on duty and he was great. A little quiet at first but the more I talked, the friendlier he became. This guy was awesome! Maybe he was the missing element from my two previous visits. He was fun and personable and all the customers at the bar seemed to really enjoy him. Despite him being the only bartender working, everyone's drinks were always full and he was great at checking in to see if we needed anything. The food was good was well! The French fries were perfect---crispy golden brown perfection. And the short rib sliders were great too! A little greasy for my taste but the bread was amazing. Overall I'm really happy I came back to give this place another try. The staff was friendly and not all just standing around the bar talking to the bartender when they had a full dining room as my previous visits. Looks like they've gotten their stuff in order! Like beer?! Want practically an endless variety to choose from? You miiiiiight want to check this place out. We usually come in for appetizers...and beer...obviously. The appetizers are all really good. We've tried most of them. My favorite is probably the artichoke and the pretzels. The only negative thing that I would say is that the service can be really slooooow sometimes. We usually sit at the bar to avoid that issue. Had a great time at dinner here. The beer was excellent, and our waitress Justina was fantastic. Thanks to her recommendation, I found a new favorite. I was worried based on the mixed reviews, but the food we got was good. It's pub food, so I don't think it's fair to compare to a 5 star restaurant, but I'd definitely recommend the salmon sandwich and the burgers with homemade potato chips, and the side salad had decent fresh greens. The place was packed, but service was great through it all. Quick update - Went back for lunch - beer and food were still good, but service was slow and inconsistent. One person's burger came 30 minutes after everyone's else's food and it seemed like the waitress kept forgetting our last order. Still a fan, but I see why reviews are mixed. read more

They have the beer organized by style and then list them in descending order of IBU's. Makes it easy for folks to find a beer they like. He seemed like the bar manager but we watched him berate his staff member for 10 minutes because she started cutting lemons. Even if she was doing the wrong thing, he didn't have to stand their and chide her in front of all the customers. So embarrassing of him. Places like these are a dying breed folks! Nearly limitless choices in super duper premium beer, many names you've never heard before. Yeah, their pints are 7-9 bucks a glass...but the quality is through the roof, as is the ABV!! It's very pub-like inside, that is to say kind of dark with oak bar and furniture but it's nice. You can definitely take a date here. It's also located right in the thick of downtown Ventura so it makes it easy to grab a pint and food, then walk up to the various clubs and music venues. Barrelhouse 101 reminds me of the trendy L.A. style bar/foodie joints found on Ventura Blvd, Silver lake, and Santa Monica. Unlike L.A., Barrelhouse has less crowds and lacks the typical trendy " Sophistos" and socially elite you have to sit next to at Father's Office or Umami Burger. Most importantly, Barrelhouse 101 has good beer, and lots of it. You don't have to settle for Coor's Light or Pabst. read more
