The gentleman I spoke to answered all of my questions during the booking process. On the day of the party, we showed up a few minutes early to put up some decorations. A waitress and waiter came and greeted us right away. The owner even came by, promptly, and introduced himself to me. The kindess and professionalism was outstanding. Our waitress (I wish I remembered her name! I feel terribly that I can't provide it.) did an outstanding job! We were a big group of people and she took all of our orders, answered questions, and helped us with anything we needed. I hope it can be determined who worked that day so she can be given her kudos as she was lovely! Lastly, the kitchen staff did a great job getting our food out in a timely manner. I love Bartels and I love Redding California. One of my biggest mistakes in my entire life was leaving Redding years ago and coming up to Oregon. I have fond memories of Bartels since I graduated from Shasta College way, way back a long time ago. God bless Bartels, they are a family company and make the best burgers in the whole, entire world. When I was going to college I worked at Tubby n' Ann's, but they no longer exist. It broke my heart when I found out about that, because there are a lot of Redding landmarks that make the town feel like home, and Bartels is a landmark and there's no place like home. God bless Redding and Bartels and every other family business there and don't ever change, cause if you do it just won't be the same. I'm done. read more

The woman working at the counter was very friendly, and the restaurant itself was exactly what I had hoped for: a small, local burger spot with plenty of character. I ordered a double Bonney Burger with pepper jack cheese, along with fries, fry sauce, and an unsweetened iced tea. I didn't have to wait very long, and the food smelled great when it arrived. The first thing I noticed, however, was that the burger looked a little bare. I couldn't see any cheese, condiments, or sauce; it mostly looked like two patties between a bun. Of course, appearances can be deceiving, so I took a bite. The patties themselves were delicious, but the burger was extremely dry. I couldn't taste any condiments or sauce, and I barely noticed the cheese. I kept eating because toppings are sometimes concentrated toward the middle or back of a burger, but it remained mostly the same throughout. I eventually tasted the pepper jack, but because I had ordered a double burger, I assumed it would come with two slices of cheese. Apparently, it only comes with one, so that was my mistake for assuming. I could have asked for extra sauce halfway through, but I also feel that a burger shouldn't require additional sauce just to keep it from being dry--unless, of course, that is how someone prefers it. The fries were nicely salted, although they were crinkle-cut, which happens to be my least favorite type of fry. There was nothing wrong with them; that is simply a personal preference. I should have asked beforehand because I probably would have ordered something else had I known. The fry sauce was delicious, but the small container wasn't quite enough for all the fries, so I ended up using ketchup for the rest, which I don't normally do. Overall, I gave Bonney's Burgers three out of five stars. I don't feel that they necessarily did anything wrong or served bad food. Much of my rating comes down to personal preference. I like a juicy, flavorful burger with plenty of condiments, and this one was simply WAY too dry for me. I know people who prefer burgers on the drier side, so perhaps that is what their regular clientele enjoys. I will definitely return because I always give local businesses a second chance.
