Your food is cooked to order, you don't get a burger that has been sitting around, The fries and chocolate shakes are delicious too. The shakes are nice and thick. I have been to Bartel's a handful of times but after tonight, I am not sure if I will be going back. $20 for two double burgers and a large fry - one of the burgers with grilled onions was a disaster with a soggy bun and the other burger had the slightest amount of wilted lettuce. And the fries were definitely not enough to classify as a large. If I do decide to go back I will definitely be eating inside so if this happens again, they can correct it. Another old fashioned run down dump. However, the Giant Burger is in my humble opinion the absolute BEST burger I have eaten in my life. They have that right combination of quality local beef, right grill temperature, buns, etc. I LOVE how they have thin and very crispy fries, and their fry sauce is the second best I have ever had. For some reason, they always seem to hire 400 pound ladies who have a not so nice disposition (not being sexist or against anyone heavy, I just think its weird that it has always been that way for the last 25 years or so). You may have to wait a bit for your order during lunch time, deal with limited seating and high prices, but it is fresh and fantastic. If you have a little time, give them a try. read more

Apparently this place USED to be the best burger joint in town, but based on my visit I can't believe the place is still in business. I got the "regular" burger, which was literally the size of a Mcdonald's burger. My husband ordered the "giant' burger, which was what I would consider to be an average-sized burger. They have a very limited menu, and you can't add avocados to your burger (bummer)! The attendant at the counter was unfriendly and looked as if she hated her job and couldn't wait for us to order and get out of her sight. I asked for my fries "really, really well done." They came out white, floppy, and very greasy. They were very skinny and (again) reminded me of McDonald's. When I asked them to throw the fries back in again, they fried them for about 40 seconds and then handed them back to me just as white. There was limited seating, lots of flies buzzing around, and they were very over-priced... I will not be back again. read more

I haven't found a burger joint I like more than Bartel's. The food is fantastic, the fry sauce is to die for, and the shakes are some of the best. The environment feels like a perfect blend between modern and vintage, where it's clearly a present-day establishment, but the decor and the barstools give it quirks reminiscent of the '50s joints from TV. Let's face it, Redding is a little short on Bay area sophistication... BUT this is a great little hamburger joint. You can pick your level of doneness, you get some fries, you get to watch it all being cooked. What's not to like? This is probably my favorite burger in redding. Every time I visit, I've gotten nothing but the best. I've never had a problem with my burger and I can always expect great quality from this restaurant. The inside isn't very big, but I'm usually on the go when I get something here. I would definitely recommend this as a quick stop to get a great burger. Other than this, Maxwells is the only other place in redding that has a legitimate burger with great quality. read more

Burgers are good. But the amount of meat is less. The regular is like the kid burger and the giant is like the regular. Tiny amount of meat for the price and the onion is slightly old. Wish they would stay consistent. Quality is being compromised for profit. read more

I was in July 3rd 2013, The people were friendly which I found few posted were bored & sometimes in the back room? WRONG! My order was taken quickly and the gal order taker did not try to push other food items which was great! I came in for a good burger Med Rare and that's what I got. I like the fact I did not have to wait In line! Large Meat with on a large bun. I did not ask for the regular burger, I asked for the "Giant Burger". I do not mean to dis but the night before I went to a del Taco and for $3.11 I got a "Macho Meat Burrito, It was small and the meat was ground fine like a bunch of oatmeal with meat flavor, a few bites and not even a snack! My boyfriend has fond memories of this restaurant throughout his childhood and young adult life. After being away for over a decade, he decided to treat me to the 'Bartell' experience. He chose the giant burger, and I chose the blt, which was practically the only other option but all fine with me because I love a good bacon lettuce tomato sandwich! We get our sandwiches to go with an order of fries and a med root beer shake in which we shared both. The shake was yummy! The man said the fries tasted burnt as we sampled them on our way home. When we got home and opened the bag, expecting large delicious portions sliced from heaven itself, we got a dumpy burger stacked upside down and a child sized blt. Literally child sized. Super disappointed, and we won't be back. There are other shakes in town. Next time we will try Dudes. read more

The burgers are very good here, cooked to order. The produce used on them is perfectly ripened and proportioned. The fries here are the best that I can remember ever eating, crisp, not greasy like the average fast food restaurants', and served piping hot. They refill your soda as many times as you request and are just general friendlier than restaurant staff at high end restaurants. read more
