Great service, treat good, and prices not reflective of Waikiki. A very pleasant dining experience

I had a nice breakfast here. Service was good and breakfast was tasty. I went in with expectations that everything in the area will be priced at a Waikiki cost so I felt the money paid was worth it. When walking by a few times, I was surprised to see this place nearly empty. Give them a chance and you'll be satisfied.

Lomo saltado- don't order if you actually want meat and not fries
    Rose O.

We ordered the lomo saltado breakfast, it was basically fries saltado. Meaning very little meat. And a whole lot of fries. I brought awareness to the waiter and they told me they were going to bring me a side, then the manager came over and said it was 4oz of meat and he was sorry I felt that way, since I said "it is very little meat". They didn't bring me the meat either. I suggested they add the weight to the menu he said he wasn't going to do that but rather instruct the waiters to educate customers when they choose it's the taste was very good though. And the manger gave us a 20 % discount. It was very kind of him

Service was great and the food was excellent. We had the pork chop, the prime rib, and the pan roasted half chicken and each dish was delicious!

Happy hour is from 2-5pm daily and is only offered at the bar (bummer, because it looks like they have a nice outdoor area...) The prices on the HH drinks were good and I'm always glad when they have local beers on draft. However, I was pretty underwhelmed by the food. Garlic chicken sliders: Instead of having one piece of chicken, it was multiple small pieces of chicken, which means they kept falling out of the sandwich. They were also soft - and so was the mac salad on the sandwich, so there was no textural contrast. It probably would've been much better if the chicken was crispy. Garlic soy fries: Interesting shape! They were crispy on the outside but were sitting in the sauce, so they could get soggy if they sat too long. Overall it just felt like everything was a touch too sweet and needed a hit of acid or salt or something to punch it up.

Rodd helped me plan my mom's 60th birthday dinner here at Basalt and they exceeded in impressing all 14 people! They helped me curate a 3 course menu that fit perfectly with our group and the the pricing was more than fair for the amount and quality of the food we received. I have to give huge props to Rodd and his team, especially our waitress Bina, for such an outstanding job. We all enjoyed everything, from the salad starters down to our desserts, everything was perfect! Our meal started off with the house salad, perfectly dressed & great size for an app. Then our guests had 3 items to choose from: fish, chicken or gnocchi with sausage. I chose the fresh catch of the day which was marlin. It did not disappoint. Loooved the cook on it. It came with veggies and white rice and was perfectly portioned. I tasted the chicken and the gravy was amazing along with the mashed potatoes. Loved how lightly the skin was fried. Also tasted the gnocchi which was really flavorful as well. The third course was a dessert option of a mochi brownie or POG (Passfruit, Orange & Guava) mousse. Both options were great as it provided a chocolate and non-chocolate dessert. I liked the brownie the best! Everyone had nothing but great things to say about their meals. I definitely recommend Basalt for any occasion! Appreciate Rodd, Bina and everyone at Basalt in creating a memorable experience for my mom's birthday. Thank you times a thousand!

Great food! Very tasty! Relaxed environment. Excellent service! Very attentive! Enjoyable experience! 10% Kama'aina discount.

Had a wonderful brunch at Basalt. I had a tasty skillet mixed with steak, French fries, and over easy eggs. My dish had alot of personality. My dessert was a fruit mousse cake slice that was flavorful and different from the usual chocolate mousse served in most restaurants. The service was very courteous and prompt.

We stumbled upon this place when having a starvation in Waikiki. When you walk the entrance is through another business/store. It is very casual with both indoor and outdoor seating. Our server was really friendly and engaged in conversation while providing suggestions for us. The food was good, specifically the charcoal pancakes. It was light and the flavor was good. We will definitely be back.

The charcoal pancakes are an absolute must try - soft & fluffy, delicious, and visually appealing! The loco moco portion here is a bit smaller compared to other restaurants (but sized right for a moderate appetite), but it was packed with more flavor, very delish. Nice service. Would return to try other items on the menu. If driving, you can park at the Hyatt Hotel 6th floor and Basalt can validate it for 3 hrs. We ended up shopping around the area a bit longer so we had to pay for an extra 1.5-2 hrs of parking, which ended up being like $12.

Price: $30 per person for brunch. $$. For touristy area, it is not bad. 4 stars. Ambiance: modern, nice dining area with outdoor seating. 4 stars. Location: in the heart of Waikiki, part of the Hyatt Centric complex, on Kuhio street. I believe you can get parking validated at the Hyatt Centric. It is kinda interesting Location since it shares space with a convenience store. So you can do some grocery shopping afterwards. 4 stars. Meals: we only came here for brunch. So, menu is limited. We got salmon toast and loco moco. Both are very tasty. 4 stars. Service: so so. It was not busy on a Thursday morning. There were about 3 small parties. It took 15 min to place order and another 20 min to get our meals... I know, it's island time! Regular coffee with unlimited refill: $5 each. Orange juice $6 Loco moco $20 Salmon toast with side salad $25 It's not a cheap eat but does not burn a hole in your wallet either.

    Pork loco moco
    Stephy L.

A little sad that they switched their menus and a chef change. My favorite item before was the wagyu loco moco, which they now swap out for a pork loco moco to be different. If comparing the wagyu loco moco to the pork, the wagyu was far superior. But if comparing a pork loco moco, which is different from the rest of the strip, it's good. Cooked perfectly. They still had similar items, like the charcoal pancakes, and a few other items. The menu is still affordable for most items. But with the swap of the loco moco, it will definitely deter me from coming often, or at all. The wagyu loco moco was my favorite on the strip. Please bring it back!

I ordered the squash risotto. It was luxurious, rich, and creamy. It did not taste much of squash however. The added mushrooms dominated the flavors, but I'm not complaining. I love a mushroom risotto. My friend had the French onion grilled cheese and loved the sandwich. The tomato compote again was a bit too spicy for my friend to enjoy. We wished more of the ingredients would be listed so we can make some better choices for their spice sensitive palate. I had the tea and tamarama cocktails. The tea was a bit too sweet for my taste but still enjoyable. The tamarama was definitely more compatible with my palate and I loved it. Overall, we had a great time, the service was great and I enjoyed all the food immensely. We went over the weekend and it was quite loud so that might be something to consider when deciding to go.

First impression, I thought the location was kinda hidden and small. But when you enter inside,…read moreit's actually huge! They have the bakery, sit down restaursnt area, and an open kitchen. We came around 4PM and were surprised it was almost empty (but slowly it did get busier). Our food came with complimentary bread with guava sauce. It was really good! The bread is toasted, crispy, and buttery. Everyone in my party enjoyed it. We did not expect our food items to come in really large portions. I loved the chicken karaage! The batter was light and crispy with great flavors and had a yummy sauce drizzled on top. It also came with a scoop of rice, buttered corn, and Mac salad. Mac salad was delicious! Prime rib sandwich came with salad and au jus sauce and a side of salad. It's good but also very filling. I didn't try the burger or teriyaki chicken but was told both were delicious. After dinner, we ordered a few items from the bakery to eat on the plane. You have to take a number and wait for them to call it. I got 2 kouign Amannn, 2 Dubai coco puff, and half dozen green tea puff. The kouign amann is a circular croissant. I liked that it was soft and flaky and had a sweet, crispy glaze over it. The Dubai coco puff had a strong pistachio crunchy flavor but I thought it was way too sweet for me personally. The Star of the show are the green tea cream puffs! I would come back to just order that! The top filling tasted like a thick creamy brown butter green tea-flavored icing. The filling inside doesn't taste like brown butter and less thick but still really good. Overall, they had really good food and items from the bakery. Highly recommend the infamous green tea cream and chicken karaage dish! Customer service was quick and professional though I felt like our server wasn't that friendly lol. The restaurant was very clean and had plenty of seating.

I ordered the clam chowder, and the waitress placed the spoon directly into the soup -- not something I expect from a place with their reputation The fried chicken, which I normally enjoy, came out dark brown, a bit dry, and tasted like the oil wasn't cleaned. And when I ordered the prime rib, the waitress asked if it was takeout while I was already seated in her section Clam chowder: very good Fried chicken: 3/5 Prime rib: 5/5 The bakery area is almost too good to pass up -- coco puffs still hit, and the Dubai-style pastries are a nice treat I still love this establishment, but I hope they tighten up the quality and service again Marie

We were actually asked about 3 times by 3 different servers if we wanted a different drink besides water, which was ok with us. We appreciated them being very attentive to each table's needs. Food: 10/10. I ordered the Veggie Eggs Benedict and it tasted really good. I liked how the ingredients taste fresh and how the benny complemented very well with the potatoes. I also sampled my brother's fried rice and it was amazing. The Extreme Mess was flavorful too, a little bit on the saltier side for me but my boyfriend enjoyed it. Ambiance: We were seated outside but it was covered and well-ventilated. The place is well-maintained and clean, and has a "local brunch place" vibe which I liked. Parking: We lucked out and got parking at the available space by their lot, around 11am on a Saturday. There's also street parking available.

My fiance won a gift card actually 2 of them (from his coworker whom could not get a reservation secured), we knew we had to make the trip over before they officially close. We had multiple dishes, but staff made Kauai prawns and tomato miso black cod dishes on the house since they ran out the Hokkaido scallops. We ordered the short ribs, lobster appetizer, hamachi crudo and lastly sashimi moriawase to finish food palate. Lukki lemon dessert was great way to end to night. Ordered the Milk tea bouquet cocktail while my better half had water ( either way the food coma knock him out cold the rest of the night lol). To be honest, it was difficult to determine which dish was the best because the staff kept quality there despite it being busy every night since they announce the closure. Sashimi moriawase, fish was so fresh, reminded me of my time spent in Hokkaido and Sapporo. Short ribs was soft and rich in flavor. Both me and my fiance liked the lukki lemon dessert, like lemon meringue pie but broken down version. If you have a chance to dine here before closing and got a reservation, definitely will have a lovely dining experience and your stomach will be full by end of the night.

We had leftovers for breakfast the next day! - For appetizers we got: Ulu Tots, Japanese Eggplant, and Corn Beignets. The Corn Beignets was the best. - For entree we got: Tomato Miso Black Cod and the Short Rib. Both were delicious and worth a try. Sad to see that this restaurant appears to be closing.
