The food was excellent. I went in on a Saturday morning, I was in early and there were only a couple of other people there so I was a little worried. I was greeted promptly, sat and served very quickly. The place is on the ground floor connected to an ABC and a couple of other food places, it has a bar in the middle, and tables around it with some patio seating. I ordered the smoked salmon toast, which came with a side salad and a side of Portuguese sausage. The toast was delicious, with scrambled eggs, delicate smoked salmon, onion and capers. The salad was fresh and well dressed, and the sausage was melt in your mouth. The food was good and the service was good. Before I was done eating the place had filled up a bit and had a good vibe. Upon looking for breakfast places on Google, I stumbled upon this one that offered something called "Charcoal Pancakes." The reviews said great things about it and the color itself made it exotic. Therefore, I went ahead and ordered that with a side of eggs & bacon. The strawberry jam paired SO well with it & i like that the whip cream was also dark in color. Definitely recommend it if you stop by for breakfast. We sat outside as there was nobody inside and the day was beautiful. Our server was very attentive and friendly. We enjoyed dining at Basalt while enjoying a Staycation. It provides a nice quiet ambiance without the crowd and noises of bustling places throughout Waikiki. A place one can enjoy as it is quite spacious, clean, and with great food. We had both breakfast and dinner. Coffee was excellent; nice and hot. We had a side order of Pancake which was light and fluffy, delicious with eggs Benedict which was perfectly prepared. Dinner we had wine and the seafood coconut curry. The clams were plump with meat but had particles of sand so just needed to be cleaned better; but the mussels, shrimp, etc were perfect. We enjoyed this dish very much with a nice serving of greens. Ok, I walk by your restaurant every day, I'm a local GM of a nearby restaurant. Every day I literally get sad when I see your restaurant. What are you doing? You have basically the only street level lanai in an 8 block radius and you are at the corner of easily one of the 5 busiest foot traffic intersections in the state. And you serve Italian food, a cuisine almost everyone enjoys and that has an established, successful business model that requires very little proprietary uniqueness to replicate and achieve success. You have the funding that would get most GMs physically aroused. And you share a wall with what's left of an iconic Hawaiin Landmark. I mean in order to mess that up you would have to make the outside lanai look cold and uninviting with no real barrier between the guests and the delivery truck exhaust, and the sign and and entrance look like it's to a haunted house, and you'd probably have to make your guests enter and exit through a convenience store. Cuz that's where I want to take a client to impress them, or a girl I want to see again. I walk by and I think how nice it would be to have a street entrance to a plant covered lanai with A 8 foot wall against the alley, with wicker light patio furniture and bright linens and wine, a meat and cheese board, and a Caprese salad, with Italian music playing. Ya know, an airy, fresh, escape from the hustle and bustle of the busy street right outside. A place to take a break with your friends and relax. Like stepping off the crazy busy path and entering into a different time and pressing pause while you have some wine for an hour or so. But nope, I've gotta go to the escape room entrance and have the hostess walk me through a food court, through a convenience store, through an empty cold and dark Italian restaurant and sit me at a sharp stone or metal looking table on a closed in lanai, 10 feet away from 3 clearly visible teenage tourists smoking weed by a loud delivery truck. What are you doing?? It just makes me sad, such a wasted opportunity with so much potential, I truly don't wish you any ill will, but I'd bet that I don't need to. Im sorry, I'm trying to help. I'm sure the service and food is fine, but you guys just messed up the concept. Good luck! If the owners or GM is reading this, it's time, cut your losses and do a grand reopening with a new brand. And for gods sake don't make people enter through a freaking convenience store!! Use the rare and game changing advantage of the street access you have and waste. Please. lol read more

And winners because I got to taste both. Pork belly was super soft and the taste was great. Loco moco and fried rice were awesome. I also got an avocado toast, I should've ordered it with an egg but It was still great. I'm not much of a pancake gal but my other half ordered it for himself and it was actually pretty good. The best meal we had in Hawaii, hands down! I met a friendly lady and her husband on my hike up to Makapuu, who recommended this hidden gem. They mentioned the charcoal pancakes were a must-try, I was a little hesitant but when I hear "hidden gem" I am just too curious! Luckily we were able to make it to breakfast here on our last day in Hawaii. This restaurant is at the back of the Duke's Lane Market, which from the street just looks like another market. Truly hidden indeed! We were seated immediately which was nice for a change as many popular restaurants in Waikiki require some wait time. We ordered the signature items on the menu including the loco moco, pork belly fried rice, tapislog and of course, the charcoal buttermilk pancakes! The server gave us small plates for our family to share without us needed to ask. We also had our waters refilled throughout. Appreciate the attention to detail and excellent service! The loco moco had a sunny side egg on top of a wagyu beef patty, mushroom gravy and bacon fried rice. This was sooo delicious! The wagyu was melt-in-your-mouth juicy and the rice soaked up all the goodness of the egg yolk. Next up the pork belly fried rice, which came with scrambled eggs and roasted pork belly on the bacon fried rice. This was also amazing! These were protein heavy dishes but were so yummy, not greasy or overly salty. The tapislog was probably my least favourite but only because I am not a huge fan of pickles, but my family did enjoy this dish. The star of the meal was definitely the charcoal buttermilk pancakes! It came with a guava strawberry sauce that paired perfectly with the whipped cream and fresh berries. The pancakes itself were so fluffy and soft. Had a chance to dine in at Basalt yesterday and it was a nice time. We came here for our honeymoon dinner and were excited to try this place out after seeing the wonderful reviews. This spot had a sweet ambiance - we ended up sitting outside where there was lots of open space which i liked. The service was also really sweet, it was a little slow - but the staff did try their best. They even told us at the end of the night that they would not take any tip (which we still gave) since they were understaffed. They also gave us this yummy charcoal bread with whipped butter to start which was nice. For the food we tried: * Tomato soup - this was part of their $50 pre fix menu which one of us got and this was yummy. This was made from local Hawaiian tomatoes and was hearty. * miso black cod - this dish was delicious as the fish was flakey and in a delicious broth. This also came with some bokchoy and mushrooms and was really well made. There was a side of rice to accompany the dish * Fried chicken - you could tell this was made fresh and the sauce to dip the chicken in was really yummy. This also came with the pork belly fried rice which I enjoyed as well as a side of green beans * Basque cheesecake - for our dessert we got this and it was delicious and well made. This came with a berry compote which had a nice tart like taste which went well with the creamy cake * Iilikoi crème brulee - We really loved this dish. I am a huge fan of anything passion fruit and this dish delivered. This was creamy with the crunchiness of the caramelized sugar and i loved how the passion fruit flavor was not overpowering. My wife got the ahi tuna and her meal was equally aesthetically pleasing as it was flavorful. We came here around 10:30 AM after our morning flight and it wasn't crowded at all. There are other shops that share the building space (like a mini food hall with an ABC store too). The Better Than a Pina Colada drink was very sweet from the pineapple, coconut, and orange juices, with a frozen slushy texture. I could barely taste the alcohol/rum but the subtle bitterness was definitely there. Our dishes came out in 5-10 minutes. We shared a Loco Moco and added a side of pork belly since both have pretty much the same things anyway - egg and fried rice - just different meats. The fried rice had little bacon pieces, mushroom, green onions and flecks of black pepper. This was really savory. The hamburger patty was pretty dry though (it says Wagyu beef patty on the menu but tasted like normal 90 or 93% lean beef you get at the grocery store). The two eggs were pretty runny and spilled out easily. The first piece of pork belly I tried was also a bit dry (not crispy but a little burnt). Until I got to the outer edge and it suddenly turned into a delicious melt in your mouth texture! I think it was only seasoned with a tiny bit of salt but the char added flavor. read more

My friend made reservation for my early birthday celebration on Saturday. We all had a great time at Basalt. Parking at Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach and they validate 3 hours parking. The atmosphere was very clean and lights were pretty bright. Our server was very friendly and he explained the menu for us. I didn't get his name but he's a Chinese server. Food was delicious. I ordered the $50 Prix Fixed Menu. I highly recommend this menu as it's worth it. The ribeye steak was very juicy and tender. Also, the mashed potato was really moist. I chose the dark chocolate mousse cake for dessert and I enjoyed every single bite. My friends ordered the Miso Pork Belly Carbonara and she said it's good but pretty spicy. The Macadamia Nuts Crusted Fish was just OK, it was pretty dried. The server surprised me and gave a piece of Cheesecake as my birthday dessert. It was SO good! Right next to the International Market Place and within its own busy shopping mall, this casual New American spot turned out to be a lucky find for Jamie W. and me in the wilds of Waikiki. We were looking for dinner and because of the long lines, frankly were about to give up and head to 7-Eleven for a couple of egg salad sandos. Fortunately there was plenty of space here. Located inside of Dukes Lane Market. When you first walk through, it's like a full-on grocery store, head towards the back you'll have the host stand/restaurant. The ambiance wasn't terrible, more on the casual side, with patrons milling about throughout the storefront. Parking is located inside of Hyatt Centric or you can try your luck through various parking garage locations within Waikiki. The menu is short and sweet, so we opted for the prix fixe menu so that we could try a little bit of everything. The miso black cod was probably my most favorite dish of the evening. The fish was prepared nicely on top of a bed of white rice and veggies. Though, the ribeye steak was overly salted for my liking and the lobster bisque was missing something. As for the service, it felt a little off. Our server started off great, providing us water, beverages and said he would give us a few minutes to decide. Though he didn't come back for another 20 minutes, which by then we were wondering if he'd gone on break. The food took a bit to come out, probably because it was coursed, but we ended up being one of the last to leave, though we got there almost 3 hours before closing. And for me personally, never having had charcoal infused menu items before (charcoal rolls), I noticed my tummy was not too happy for a couple of days after. The other individuals in the party were fine, so we knew it wasn't food poisoning. But just my experience. At the time of my visit in April 2024, Basalt was advertising some really great dinner deals. Basalt is in an easy location inside Duke's Lane Eatery with free parking - same as that for the Hyatt Centric, which is a huge plus in Honolulu. We started with the dramatic complimentary bread basket with black charcoal hued bread and butter. From there we tried the crunchy quinoa shrimp and fattoush salad, which were nice apps/sides. The shrimp had the lightest of breading, it was crispy balls clinging to the outside which made it light. The salad was a pretty generous portion and our group shared it easily. The reason for our visit was the Prime Rib, classically served with green beans/carrots and mashed potatoes. It was well cooked. The other entree was the Szechuan fried chicken with a dipping sauce and oddly, a weird condiment bowl of green beans that we didn't like. Overall, a good meal. read more

Came here at 11 AM on my own for brunch on a Tuesday. There were only a handful of other diners. I've always seen the restaurant name outside, but was surprised to see it's actually attached to the Duke's store. Basalt is my cousins' favorite place to eat in the area. They rave about the happy hour. Although I didn't make it for happy hour, I think it was still a great choice for a first meal of the day. I was torn between the pork belly fried rice and the loco moco. I haven't had a loco moco blow away before, but I think this is one of the best I've had. The garlic fried rice was tasty, moist, and the flavor of the beef was high-quality. I especially liked the golden eggs on top! It came with two pieces of fruit, a pineapple and an orange, and I got toast. I also got coffee with unlimited refills, which were they were very attentive to. I felt a bit early to start drinking, but I thought why not, the mai tai looked really beautiful and it was my last day on the island. And it was as delicious as it looked! My server, Thuy, delivered exceptional service. I thought the price was great for the quality and service that I got too. If you're goin for brunch this would be a nice sweet dish to share Kahlua pork tacos- The pork was a bit dry. I didn't think it was really that much better than what I can get on the mainland. I also think the ratio of meat to like other stuff wasn't great. Great value if you want protein tho. Imo it was just too much meat and maybe there could have been something like avocado or more salsa. I also didn't really love the flavor of the salsa tho again there wasn't much of it so I barely tasted any flavor besides just meat. One of my absolute favorite things about this place is that they change their menu, and it's more often than you think. The chef has an exquisite palette and imagination that brings culinary excellence of blending some of the most unique and intriguing ingredients to bring you a food experience like no other. This trip I stopped in and found a new menu and even the side table black rolls have officially been removed showing that the best won't always last! The mushroom risotto and Singapore clams is what I went with this trip and neither disappointed. The clams were by far the best I've ever had and the subtle spice was perfect with every bite. It wasn't a spice you couldn't enjoy but rather one you wanted to keep going back for. The risotto was absolutely on point to cooking and the mushrooms was a melody of flavors adding to the touch. The weather was also perfect to be able to sit on the patio which I usually enjoy when it's not raining. Service is always above and beyond here and I've never made reservation and have always had the ability to get a table or sit at the bar without waiting. The food was very good, I ordered the miso butterfish, hubby ordered the mac nut crusted fish and others ordered the prime rib or paella. The miso butterfish was excellent. Came with white rice and I immediately added it to my plate to soak up the broth.....yummy. My hubbs was a little disappointed, he felt the mac nut fish was too tomato-ey.
