This review is for anyone that has any dietary restrictions or sensitivities. If that's not you or one of your guests, this is a great place (decor, food, service, etc). I'm vegan, so I don't eat meat or dairy. A chop house wouldn't be my first choice, but I was in the area for work and this was the only non-fast food restaurant open. I called ahead and confirmed that they could make something for me (I was told a combination of sides or a vegetable pasta on the phone). I went with a few colleagues, explained to our server my restrictions, with specific mention of chicken stock (which eliminated the pilaf) and butter. She confirmed with the kitchen that I could go with a few sides with no dairy, which I did. I tried some of the broccoli which had a strong butter taste. I asked the server if they used butter, so she checked with the kitchen and confirmed that they had when they steamed it. She then asked me to taste the asparagus to see if it was ok as they weren't sure if butter was used there. So not only did they not know if an ingredient was used that I'd specifically requested be omitted, their solution was to ask me to try it myself and let them know. How is it acceptable for me to be my own taste tester? So yes, not ideal for me to eat at a chop house in the first place. You might also not agree with my diet choices but if a restaurant agrees that they can serve me they should follow through on it. On the positive side, the baked potato was great. read more

I have been here only once and I order the tour de force Wagyu NY Strip steak, which was plain old not good. Tough and disappointing are words I would use to describe the steak. Flavorful is not how I would describe the Greg Norman signature steak. A friend told me it's brought in frozen from Australia or NZ so that may be why it's not good. Oysters Rockefeller, rib eye, and chicken masala. I had oysters Rockefeller and rib eye steak (medium well) and my friend had chicken masala, which I tried. The oysters were good and plenty. Although it was cooked properly, the steak was obsolutely bland. No flavor at all, which means it was probably stale. I have had better steak at Outback. I tried my friend's chicken masala and it was tasty, a lot better than my steak. No complaints about the service. read more

My wife and I went last night for our early Valentine's Day dinner. Our server was excellent unfortunately that was the highlight of the night. Calamari was very chewy, not cooked properly, flavor was good. My 50 dollar steak had no flavor and was charred. My wife had blackened grouper and for another 24 dollars added 3 scallops. The sauce was pure butter, so rich and once again no real flavor. I have no problem paying for quality food and drinks, which by the way were completely watered down. I know for the prices there are several better places in our area. Not good for 250 dollars total. read more

The wagyu ribeye was the best tasting steak I ever had! I never had anything like it and as good. (That includes steaks at Bern's on the same trip to the Tampa/St Pete area). And the price was reasonable for wagyu. Moreover, our server was excellent and very personable. -- We are looking forward to coming back to Bascom's on our trip to FL next year. read more

We were here for a business event. The food was out of this world! The shrimp cocktail fresh and delicious, the house salad was great, the seared five spice tuna was perfect, the bacon wrapped scallops were amazing, the crab cakes were nice and crabby and the carved beef was tender and flavorful. The courteous staff were very attentive and we had an incredible evening. This is a wonderful place for a group, for a family or for a romantic dinner for two. I would highly recommend Bascom's Chop House to locals and tourists and we will return soon. read more

Ended up here as a result of the recommendation from the Courtyard down the street. I'm always a bit leary of recommendations from hotel staff as they either have never been to the restaurant and/or just providing some type of coupon. Myself and a few colleagues went for dinner and were very impressed. I had the pistachio crusted halibut and it was excellent!! My colleague had the rib eye and said it was very good. Jalepeno mac and cheese is a great side dish!! Overall, very happy with our dinner and will be back when we're in the area for customer meetings! read more

A rep took my team out for lunch recently, and we ended up at Bascom's! And I am glad we did! I ordered the grilled Prime Rib lunch, and it was the best prime rib I have had in in a restaurant in quite a while! I ordered it medium rare, and it was perfect... just warm in the red center. Very tasty... the Au Jus was excellent, the horseradish they serve is wonderful, not overpowering! The Caeser salad I had as a side was excellent also... it actually had real anchovies in it, and tasted like the dressing was freshly made. Very well done! highly recommended! Amazing steak house! I have dined here twice in a row. I always though there wouldn't be better steaks and service than The Capital Grille but I was wrong! Bascom's delivers amazing steaks including a wagyu NY strip. I usually don't order NY strip as it is dry and not tender. This one at Bascom's is nothing like that. It is actually pretty tender and tasty. The sides and the appetizers are awesome too and the wines are great. They usually run specials for wines and the prices are actually very very resonable. If you are looking for the perfect lunch salad - try the Seafood Cobb. It may appear a bit pricey, but you get a significant amount of lump crab and it just seems to be the right amount to eat at lunchtime. I have been to Bascom's Chop House many times for networking meetings and have eaten there before and after. This place makes a good steak but the steak isn't any better than an Outback or other chain steak restaurant. When I pay up to order a steak out I want a steak and I want it awesome. This is just A-OK. And it isn't cheap either. The place is very dark with dark wood and low mood lighting. But this isn't in a chic sort of way. It is in an old world oppressive sort of way. I find it dated and less comfortable than it should be. I like to judge a restaurant, not only by the quality of its food (which was ok here but not a stand out), but by the quality and cleanliness of its bar. Bars have higher margins than the food and less cost to maintain so a well run place will maximize the bar's presence and keep it clean. A poorly run place will have a shoddy bar. Bascoms bar is shoddy. It has the poorest layout I have ever seen. It is tiny for the size of the place. It doesn't keep up with the local beer renaissance that we are having right now, and I was just not impressed at all. My beer was cold. But they didn't have the whiskey or bourbon that I wanted to go with my steak. What a shame. So this is just an average steak house by my count. It is a shame because Bascom's has potential but I think that they found something that worked and never updated it. Now it is getting frayed around the edges. Even a successful restaurant has to reinvent itself or it will lose it luster. And Bascoms has tarnished its reputation with me! read more

Several reviews have mentioned the old world charm. It is very much that and more. This place serves steaks and seafood in rooms with dark wood trim outlining the windows that separate the different dining rooms and art work on the walls. The presentation of the table was functional elegance with a white tablecloth covered with white paper adorned with a decoratively folded napkin. All the patrons were dressed in business casual or even less casual. This place definitely had a feel of come relax, enjoy, and taste some wonderful food surrounded by charm. I was greeted in a very friendly manner in a nice foyer that allowed for seating if there was a wait. I was seated promptly; however, while on the way to my seat the host provided options of seating encouraging a relaxing experience. I was on a mission for lunch and knew what I really wanted. My visit was to satisfy a craving for a French Dip and French Fries. I have to say that I was very pleased with my experience. I even added a couple of extras to enjoy. My lunch started with a savory lobster bisque that had a smooth creamy texture topped with delicate pieces of lobster. The flavor was very satisfying. The French Dip and au jus was just right. The sandwich came on buttery toasted sour dough bread that crunched when you bit into it leaving your mouth tasting the layer of butter as it sinks into the prime rib. The au jus was not over powering with a salty flavor. Just right! When the bread, prime rib, and au jus were combined it created a delightful symphony of flavors. Oh the French Fries! The first thing I noticed was they were hot. The salt was just right to awaken the potato. This was a delicious delight even right down to the crisp fresh pickle garnishing the plate. As an added bonus to my lunch experience I discovered something new about the iced tea they serve. It started with a slight mix-up on my drink order and ending with a wonderful delight. I originally ordered sweetened ice tea. However, when she came with my drink order she had brought unsweetened tea along with all the normal choices of artificial sweeteners. My response to her was that the splenda would be better for me than all the sugar in a sweetened iced tea. This led to a brief conversation about natural sweeteners and stevia where she explained that they had a sweetened tea that used this natural leaf. She brought out a bottle of black tea from "The Republic of Tea" that was just perfect. The label stated it was brewed from black tea leaves and stevia leaves. I was delighted. I know it is a simple small detail but I really enjoyed the variety of the choice. (Note: I left my tea snobbery at the door suffice it to say that an article on tea can absolutely stand-alone by itself) It has been a long time since I have been to Bascoms in the evening and that was with a large group in their upstairs area which has its own bar, dance floor, and separate dining areas for several large parties at one time. With that said, I did pass through the downstairs bar that looked as though it had plenty of room for a social event happy hour. Their happy hour offer is $1 off cocktails, wine or beer until 7pm daily. Whether upstairs or downstairs it appears they have plenty of room to mingle. read more

My bf took me here for Valentine's Day with 4 more of our friends. I had a few glasses of wine before we left and split a bottle with him for dinner. So I was in a great mood! Everyone we were with had a different dining experience. We all split fantastic calamari, delicious mussels and superve spinach dip with no disappointments! It was the entrees that brought everyone's night down. We waited about 1hr and 45mins which was expected for V Day, but the food was very poor. Everyone's steaks were cold and cooked more than what they had ordered. Not only that but the outsides were burnt. Plus the service was awful, we had to call someone from another table for our check because our server was no where to be found for 45mins after we ate. It's a shame, we all had high hopes for this place. I don't think any of us will go back. read more

Oh where to start. Was in town on a lay over after a cruise and decided to eat in the "best steak house in Tampa" per the advertisements. That should have been enough. A really good steak house doesn't need to advertise they are good, they just are. But I digress. We were seated at a normal table. Looking around I could tell this was going to be a doozy. The art ranged from a blank canvas I'll call "Beige", to a Japanese-esque print (oddly numbered 40/18) in a cheap poster frame, to great grandmas childhood portrait, to Timmy's 4th grade art project. The bread came first. It was bland and doughy. The "butter" sadly added no taste. I decided to order the "back by popular demand" Billionaire old fashioned. This came with a piece of bacon so covered in black pepper it made me gag. There was no hint of fruit as is typical of an old fashioned and the sweetener (which I believe was supposed to be brown sugar) was imperceptible over the black pepper. Decided to skip appetizers as we were in a bit of a hurry. For the entree decided to go with the filet and added a lobster tail. It's hard to mess up filet, as usually just a little salt and pepper makes it epic. Even decided to add a marrow/butter sauce to make sure. I was wrong. It was under-cooked and had zero flavor. Literally the onion straw garnish was more enjoyable. As an aside, the steak knife had a faux-bone handle that was never in style and looked dated and cheap. The lobster tail was on a whole different level. It was stringy. Literally stringy. I have no idea how lobster is stringy but it was. The "for looks only" topping added no flavor and the clarified butter tasted like canola oil. Then we get to the sides. Ordered gouda Mac and cheese and broccolini. The mac and cheese was good, as expected. The broccolini however was not seasoned but instead slathered in some odd butter sauce that added nothing. Hoping to add something I wanted to salt it, but there wasn't even a salt shaker on the table. By this point I gave up. Asked for the check and decided to get out of dodge. Never again will I trust airport billboards. My bad. read more

This was my first experience at Bascom's and it was great. The inside was very upscale and nice. dressing up is optional and not necessary - some guests were dressed up nicely and some were in sweatpants. I was in a party of five and we all enjoyed our meals. No complaints. The waitress was very knowledgeable, polite and attentive. We started off with complimentary warm bread and butter. We ordered crab cakes as an appetizer which were very good. This was free through the coupon on Yelp :) Although there were only two small crabcakes, so split between 5 people we all had a couple bites each. I ordered coffee and a mojito - both perfect. Really good coffee, surprisingly. Next was the french onion soup (amazing!!!!) and chicken marsala with all broccoli side (equally amazing.) It was my birthday so I was then given a free dessert of my choosing -- i went with the flourless chocolate cake slice. It was soooo rich and very tasty! I recommend it but don't expect to finish it on your own! Definitely sweet enough to satisfy a group of five sweet tooths. Other orders at our table were the King steak (medium rare) and coconut snapper special - all enjoyed with no complaints. Lovely place! We weren't able to get reservations, so I sat at the bar while waiting for my friend to arrive. It was a long wait for a table, so we were pretty content at the bar, though we preferred a more intimate place to talk. However, the hostess was amazing she came and found me when a high top was available. My friends had the salmon, which was incredible! I had the seared tuna which was equally delicious. The house red wine was really nice. Better than I had expected. It was overall an excellent experience. Slightly loud, but we were near the bar. If you're in the Sanford area and looking for some excellently prepared food, this is your place. read more

FIVE STARS AND IF I COULD GIVE TEN I WOULD DO SO!! I decided to use Bascom's Chop House for my wedding ceremony and reception and let me just say, THEY WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND!!! Keith Macatee, the events manager, worked with me the entire way. I had a guest list of ~25 people and a fast engagement, and he was able to accommodate me on a Saturday evening at opening of the restaurant (5PM) until 8PM with just two short months notice. When we arrived, everything was ready for us. Keith allowed me to show up an hour before the restaurant opened to prepare myself plus tables and decorations, and perform my ceremony in private with just my invited guests. The bartenders were amazing. The music was available to play whatever I liked over the speakers walking down the aisle (I went with a traditional Canon in D). My daughter was able to happily throw her flower petals for her flower girl duties! The room we had booked was the smaller "red room," but since no one else had booked an event that evening, the wonderful Justin upgraded us to a much larger dining room (the crystal room!!!) with plenty of space. The lighting was gorgeous. The food was beyond excellent. My guests RAVED about the food for days afterwards. Here are the best quotes from my guests - "The worst part of a wedding is always the food but I didn't want to put my fork down!!" "The bar service was amazing and their special cocktails were reasonably priced and to die for. Service was completely on point." "Steak and potatoes were so good I'd eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner for a month!" Justin was a complete pleasure to work with! I unfortunately did not get the names of all the amazing servers but they were all SO polite and accommodating that they deserve awards! Best of all, with the affordable prices and amazing service, I was able to pull off a wedding of almost 25 people for less than $2k total including the delicious food and gratuity! My friends were astounded at the low price. I would recommend Bascom's for anything- a date night, a birthday dinner, a fun night out or a wedding! Their signature martini is delicious and, if it didn't have enough alcohol to put a small person to sleep, I would have ordered another. Also recommend the escargot and creamed spinach. read more

I was recommended to go here by a friend. It was convenient in regards to where our hotel was. Had taken mental notes, browsed their menu ahead of time, then decided that if someone recommended it, that it shouldn't be too bad. First thing I noticed was the interior of the restaurant, then checked out my wardrobe for dinner and felt woefully under-dressed. Most guests arriving after us were in suits, shirt & tie, etc etc. I was there in tourist clothes, my "Nick Nolte collection" shirt and shorts. I didn't believe there was a dress code, and nobody turned us away or broke into a closet with sport coats ready to throw on us to blend in. Second thing I noticed, after being seated, were the prices. It was something I was warned about ahead of time. If you're going for dinner, you won't be eating cheap. If I recall correctly, all items are a la carte. Want a steak? That's all you get. Want something extra with it? That'll cost you. I'm not a seafood person, so I was essentially left to pick between steak, chops, a chicken dish or two, appetizers, salads, soup. I settled on the 8 oz filet and side of garlic mashed. They also have a 12 oz filet, but I'm thinking it was the price that convinced me to get what I did. And with what I had, the food was really good, steak was cooked perfectly, and their menu warning of the sides being enough to share, they are correct on that. After finishing my meal, I still had room for more. But, my time with Bascom had come to an end. They took my money, provided me food, and kicked me out. The service was decent. Not great, not shitty. Our waiter seemed like he had pulled consecutive all-nighters and would like nothing more than to go home, wherever his home is. Be it a shelter, an actual house, or in the kitchen. To put it lightly, we had a far more energetic appearance as the customers. We were seated pretty far away from the entrance, in a restaurant that we saw 2 other tables with people at, not sure why it was decided this was the best idea but it kept us away from any noise really. Would I go back? Yes. Absolutely. Not as a last resort. The food was prepared really well. The menu and waiter made us aware that dinners did not come with any additional sides. I say this because some restaurants don't clearly state such on their menus and only when the bill comes do you find out what happened. I had also seen their lunch menu which is presumably cheaper, but I wouldn't know. They offer about the same number of options as the dinner menu does. That's next time if I get back to the area to try their food again. Lastly, while I made the remark about our waiter, and suspect if he had to wait on a table with multiple children, some loud and obnoxious, that he may flip out and put them on the grill in protest, he seemed like the guy who was just there to do his job and that's the end of it for him. If you're expecting a family of four to be fed for under $40, this is not the place to go. If you want a nice meal, this could do it, but be prepared to pay. read more

Another business function another dinner. This place is designed for a good time. Nice mood lighting and decor.... Those things are always nice but it is the food that matters. I ordered the prime rib dinner with a side salad and when the meal arrived the meat was overcooked and dry the waiter noticed immediately and said that he would bring back what I ordered. Within in 5 minutes what I had ordered arrived to the table and it was cooked exactly how I like. It was tasty and tender and a small portion of mashed potatoes had the little chunks that I like but the vegetables were cold and bland. The key lime pie for dessert was okay but I have definitely had better and I didn't know you could cut a piece that thin....lol. We went here to celebrate a birthday and while the service was good the food didn't live up to the expectations given the price point. The shrimp appetizer was bland and presented as shrimp swimming in a pink sauce... not much flavor. For dinner some chose steak while others chose pasta.. I chose the pasta.. Maine Lobster carbonara. There were good pieces of lobster in it, but the pasta( linguine as requested) seemed to be cut up and stuck together... the sauce was rather clumpy instead of creamy maybe this was due to it not being hot anymore. The food took a while to get there but this I get, less staff and a weekend... that wasn't a problem, but when you get it it should be hot. Dessert was great! We got the key lime pie, cheesecake and chocolate cake! Overall this is a pricey restaurant and I don't mind paying for it if the quality of the food lives up to the price point... this did not. read more

This evening, a colleague and I decided to have dinner at Bascom's in Clearwater. The evening started off well with a good meal. After about an hour and 25 minutes, the manager, 'Paul B., Asked my colleague and I if we could kindly vacate our table since we were no longer eating or ordering drinks. This is the first time in my entire life that I've had a restaurant say something so completely rude. Usually when a customer spends over $100 at a high-end restaurant, they don't expect to be rushed out the door. I guess at this restaurant, as long as you continue spending money, you are allowed to stay as long as you like. However, as soon as you stop, you better hit the road and fast. I've eaten at this restaurant several times in the past but I will think long and hard before bringing any colleagues back to this restaurant again.
