Being a chef, I could tell they use the highest and freshest quality ingredients. We also tried the wood fired pizza which was delicious as well. For the surrounding area, it is one of the best meals I've had in the neighborhood. Interior is very nice, rustic, and bigger than I expected. I kept my pizza simple and just got a plain pie, and it was really good and a good size for 1 person to be full from. The sauce was sweet and delicious, and you could really taste that it was brick oven pizza. We got the ricotta cheesecake and tiramisu for dessert, I like the tiramisu more and it had a really strong flavor. The ricotta cheesecake was different and lemony tasting, and it was also pretty tasty. The service was a bit slow towards the end of our meal, and we actually sat around for about 40 minutes without being checked on to see if we needed the check or anything else. I was craving an artesian style pizza for so long and I had no idea where to go. I did some research and found this place-- boy, I am so glad that I did! Let me break down my brief experience at this restaurant. Upon being seated, the ambience is just great. Great decor. So rustic and simple. I went on a Sunday afternoon, and it was pretty quiet in there. The waitress was super sweet and funny. I don't know her name, but she was just fantastic. Thank you for that. Now the food. My husband and I ordered the homemade meatballs as an appetizer. They came as sliders. Moist, tender, and delicious. For the main course, we ordered the Popeye pizza. These pies are perfect for 2 people-- perfect sizing in my opinion. A poached egg on a pizza? Don't knock it till you try it, people. This pie was divine. The balance of toppings to crust was PERFECT. Poached egg made it perfection. But my favorite part? The crust. Fluffy, chewy, yet had a crispness to it. We came recently here to meet our boss and I was not impressed by the pizza. We love brick oven pizza but the pizzas here were flavorless. We got the tricolore, a margarita with mushrooms, and basil one with potatoes. The pizza either wasn't too hot or it got cold really fast. You have got to try this neighborhood gem! I noticed it from the sidewalk and thought it was just a casual pizzeria (by the slice) and a nice bar next door. Didn't even realize the bar was part of the restaurant. l went there last week and was so amazed at the restaurant/bar that lies beyond the door!! It has a west village vibe with exposed brick walls, soft lighting and DELICIOUS food! The pizza menu is very original and all great. The entrees were also amazing and the owner and staff all provide great service and they even sent us free dessert at the end of our meal - the best homemade tiramisu i've ever had! I found the Italian white wine recommended by Owner to be perfect for our meal These people are so nice and really struggled to stay open during COVID. PLEASE go eat there. You won't be disappointed. 4 and a half stars easy! I will update it when the renovations are finished. I am leaning towards 5 stars for the return visit if it is still good. Many new restaurants open and are good for a few weeks or months and then they decline once they glide on their new popularity. I do not think that will happen here. Y'all know that I am a pizza fiend. And on this particular Saturday afternoon, with a group of 13 hungry drunkards in tow, I went hunting (on my cellular device) for a decent pizza place to satisfy our mutual pizza craving. Truthfully, Basil Brick Oven Pizza was the first and only place I called, for two reasons: 1. First of all, the man who picked up had a beautiful Italian accent, and I decided right then that it is a natural law of the universe that if you have a freshly accented Italian answering the phone at your pizza place, then your pizza must be at the very LEAST quite decent. 2. They automatically agreed to seat our party of 13 with less than 15 minutes notice. We headed over there immediately like a clumsy gaggle of pizza-hungry zombies, and were not only greeted by the same friendly Italian man that we had spoken to on the phone, but by a gorgeously-set window-side table near the entrance. He gave us some wonderful appetizer recommendations consisting of a lovely salad and antipasto, and we ended up sharing a few of their absolutely delicious pizza's. The crust was wonderfully flaky and thin, and the toppings were divine. The dessert pizza (nuttella and nuts), was astounding as well. The sauce was great, not too sweet. The basil of course was fresh. The dough was nice and thin with barely a burn on it. As a seasoned Astorian I can tell you industry standard is 30-45 minutes in the 30th Ave parts. I look forward to ordering again as they have many pies to choose from. There isn't a pizzeria in New York City with this many pizzas on the menu. I'm reluctant to highlight this though, because I don't want them treated like a sideshow. Here, it's all about quality and being down-to-earth. This is how pizza should be. Try their namesake pie, the Basil, with pesto, rosemary potatoes, and pine nuts - the namesake's gotta be good, right? Every pizza name refers to a region or a word in Italian - like the Girasole , who's moniker refers to its egg on top resembling a sun. And the Contadino , or Peasant , has to do with its use of taleggio cheese and corn. Or check out the La Scozzese, meaning Scottish ; it makes sense because it employs the use of smoked Scottish salmon. With the help of Google Translate , simply reading the menu will take you through the prep time of your meal. There are 40 pies total, and 20 more promised for the future , it would be an enviable experience trying every single one. Here's some advice: When you get your pie, the basil appears as one leaf on for each quarter. Take some time before you eat for contemplation, then tear the basil into pieces and disperse throughout your pie. This is probably preferable to eating an entire leaf in one bite... Other than pizzas, there are 4 pastas, 4 salads, 3 appetizers, and a list of 10 succulent paninis on the menu. Ordering is easy yet complicated. One recommendation: end it with the homemade tiramisu; it could be sensibly called Best in the City. Basil fits perfectly with Queens. It's quality, confident, and workable with your wallet. I ordered from here for the first time and was delivered a pizza 30 minutes later than they told me over the phone. The pizza showed up cold and I asked for a new pizza. They said the new one would take 45 minutes so I asked for my money back instead and they showed up at my front door nearly 3 hours later when I was already in bed half asleep and asked me to return the pizza!!! It's one of the best pizza wine bar all together in one place. We came here after finding out that the flight to Chicago was canceled due to the weather. We heard about the restaurant from a restaurant owner in our neighborhood so we thought ok, why not try it since the reviews were terrific. We got there around 4ish to have our early dinner. We found a parking space in front of the restaurant. Hubby went to get a ticket at the same time the manager (Dino) opened the door to welcome us. Due to his nice gesture, Hubby asked me to go in first and get a table. Dino took me past the front dining area and the kitchen and tada! I'm in a beautiful ristorante! This restaurant has 3 sections: the front, the bar and the back. I could see the cook, which I really like the concept of being able to see my chef making great meals. We ordered 2 appetizers and 1 margarita pizza. We had a nice antipasto that came with prosciutto, salami, mozzarella cheese, olives and small salad. This was crazily tasty! We had fried calamari and this appetizer size was really big and filled me up quickly. It was outstanding! Then came the pizza. We finished them all. Need I say more? By far the greatest place I've eaten at since I moved to NYC. Not only is it close to home but the food is amazing and the service is impeccable. It tends to get crowded so I don't always dine in and get take out often but if you have a chance to dine in, the experience is well worth your time. All of the pizzas are delicious! I'm also obsessed with their pear salad (I get mine with shrimp) and this cripsy bread service with a balsamic reduction sauce...love! But my absolute favorite thing on the menu is the tiramisu. I'm not a dessert person, but for their tiramisu, I'd eat dessert all day everyday! To...die...for! The service just blows you away and I believe the guy behind the counter making the pizzas (where all the magic happens) is the owner. He is the nicest guy EVER and really takes care of his customers! Had some friends visiting from home and took them to eat here one night. They absolutely loved it! Everyone was so nice and they gave us a complimentary dessert and also some shots of lemoncello (is that how you spell it?). It was the most fun we've had at a restaurant. We ordered 2 glasses of wine a salad and a 12' inch pie. It was just enough for the two of us. If you have a big appetite you may need to order a second pie. I can't comment on the food although it certainly sounds amazing- I never received my delivery. After waiting an hour and a half for my food (1/2 hour late), I called the restaurant wanting to know what was up. When the receptionist told me the food would be anywhere from another 20-30 minutes, I tried to cancel my order. It wasn't worth it. When the receptionist tried to convince me to stick it out instead of just simply cancelling it, I had to ask to speak to the manager. This is where it gets interesting. Instead of a manager coming to the phone to cancel my order, I heard the receptionist ask the manager to come to the phone and listened to him tell her that she should say "he wasn't there" and that "she should deal with me". She came back and told me that the manager wasn't there, and I responded that I had heard the entire conversation and I would hold until he was available. Then I got hung up on. When I called back (I still had not actually cancelled my order at this point) I was annoyed, and I'll admit to demanding to speak to her manager. She told me she cancelled my order, and hung up on me again. This happened a few hours ago, so the charge is still on my card. I'll wait a day to see if it drops off, but I'm pretty sure I'll need to follow up with them. Hopefully their day manager is more diligent than the one at night. Update: I've since been contacted today (the next day after the review was written) via yelp, as well as been helped by a different manager, so maybe they were just having an off night. I really can't recommend Basil highly enough. It's absurdly good. Is the place nice, with reasonable prices, and the service really good? Absolutely. However, none of that really matters compared to the food. I fight back daily temptations to eat here (the most obvious downside of this place being that it's by no means healthy to eat on a daily basis). There are a number of reasons that everything is so good, but it really all comes down to ingredients and attention to detail. All of the ingredients are incredibly fresh (e.g., basil), or made in-house (e.g., mozzarella). And as other reviewers have mentioned, the chef is meticulous about making everything well. In terms of recommendations, the Classico Panini is what I get 90% of the time, and the Tiramisu is honestly the best I've ever had (NB - I prefer very light tiramisu with less coffee flavor, and this fits that perfectly). Also, make sure to exchange clumsy punches with him for 20 seconds until some sappy Good Samaritan whines, "Guys, guys, this is wrong!" The hilarious part is that my sparring partner and I briefly aligned in purpose by shouting at the Good Samaritan ("Get out of here!" "This is none of your business!"). I still don't know why that fight happened. I think we were just two guys who had bad days and who are used to getting zero appreciation from anyone, and who drink, and that's why we were destined to briefly wail on each other. My only regret is that I didn't invite the dude who slugged me in the ribs out for pizza. Instead, I met up with someone who yelled at me the entire time for reading my text messages. I've been waiting for months for the "coming soon" sign to come down, and I finally got to try Basil pizza (for takeout) this weekend. There are so many options on the menu - we went with the Girasole pizza. It was ready in 5 minutes (guess that's what a 900 degree oven can do), and it was great! Danielle, the chef from Italy, was friendly as well. I definitely plan on trying more of their offerings. I'm afraid Papa John's down the street will be losing my business; while the price is more expensive at Basil for the quantity of food, the quality/taste make up for it. And, at $11-14 for a 12" pie, the price is competitive with what something like California Pizza Kitchen charges, so it seems reasonable. You can literally smell the fresh basil aroma as soon as you walk in the door. I ate here for the second time this weekend. Most recently, I took some close friends and family including my two little nephews. The friendly staff promptly provided us with a kids chair. The service was friendly and very helpful. My favorite dishes are the Boscaiola pie with the truffle oil, the marinara pie and the Nutella pie with strawberries(as dessert). The dough is light and perfectly crisp. I have been on the hunt for my favorite local pizzeria. I found Basil on Yelp, hoping it would be the one. We tried the Margarita, which was basic, yet good. It is on the smaller size, cut into four slices. They have TONS of variety when it comes to the pizza so I am definitely going to go back and try some different kinds. We also had pasta. We had the gnocchi with pesto: so delicious and the rigatoni which was good too. We wanted to have the penne and ordered it not realizing that it had prosciutto (we don't eat ham). The owner was extremely nice about it and let us switch out the dish. The ambience of Basil is similar to that of a place in the city with a very Brooklyn like feel. The staff is nice and so was the waitress but there seemed to be a bit of a language barrier since she did get confused about a couple of things such as our drinks, but we didn't mind so much as everything else was fine. I love the food from here! I've eaten pizza, rice balls (aranaci), and a sandwich and have never been dissapointed. The food is very fresh and has the right amount of flavor. The pizza is thin crust. They offer Italian wine and beer. My boyfriend had the beer and said it was really good and it is stronger thsn American beer. The waitress that served my table had an Italian accent, making the experience all that much fun. read more
