    Coq Au Vin
    Michelle K.

I came here with my pseudo adoptive father on a calm Thursday night in September - we had no reservation but were easily able to get an outdoor table. They were kind enough to have a heater above to keep us warm! I forgot to take a picture, but in addition to the coq au vin and the vegetarian dish (I think it was risotto) we also ordered a charcuterie board, which was super lovely. The food itself was alright - I got flavor fatigue pretty quickly with the coq au vin but the noodle texture was splendid. Overall, a decent experience if you're looking for a semi fancy dinner at Balboa. One odd note is that the young male server for some reason deliberately kept avoiding eye contact with me which was a little awkward, but he was amiable and helpful besides that.

Came here on a date with my boyfriend after a night out. We honestly found this place on accident. The staff was so kind and did inform us that there was a prefixed menu ,but we're still welcomed to order from the regular menu as well. We came during raclette night. Server made sure we were constantly happy and really took care of us. Such a special place for a quite intimate date night.

My husband and I visited Balboa Island for a spontaneous getaway, and we landed on our eyes on this restaurant for dinner. They prefer for guests to make reservations to ensure seating availability, but luckily, we arrived right as they opened and they had 1 table left available. We had to be shuffled around a bit because the table we initially sat at was reserved for regulars of the restaurant. It was no problem for us to be moved around since they accommodated our last minute seating, but be aware this could happen. However, the service was wonderful and there were many apologies about the shuffling which is why we were not offended nor frustrated with being moved around a bit. They had a great selection of specialties from which we chose the Mushroom & Spinach soup (not pictured). We also got bread and butter on the side ($7), that came out fresh and hot (still steamy)! The butter had coarse salt coated on top yet didn't taste overly salty, and left us very impressed. Dipping the buttered bread in the mushroom & spinach soup was divine. The soup itself having an excellent flavor profile as is (vegetables grown in house, and explicitly stated by server!). We then ordered the rack of lamb & oven roasted duck breast, which were both excellent. Both had a unique flavor (ordered as medium rare). While we enjoyed both immensely, we agreed that the duck was just superb, so we highly recommend getting it. My only critique would be for the rack of lamb to have a bit more char on the outside for additional texture. Overall, we are planning on visiting again in the future. We look forward to trying out different items on the menu and will get dessert next time as well.

Went here Thanksgiving weekend with my family and had such a wonderful experience. This cozy little Swiss-French spot is full of charm. My husband was beyond excited about the wine prices--seeing Silver Oak at that price was unbelievable. The food was delicious, and the desserts were phenomenal. The chef even came out to serve us--so kind, humble, and welcoming. We were a group of five tucked into a corner, knees touching, but it honestly felt cozy and bonding. (If you prefer lots of space, it may feel tight.) Warm, intimate, and memorable. Can't wait to go back!

Fabulous food selections ! Great flavor in every dish. Cheese platter is a nice way to start out with a couple of Kir Royals. Swiss onion has a nice ,flavorful broth, delicate onions and toasted bread. My wife had the fish special and I had the steak. Service is not rushed at all, and very attentive. This is a small, quaint restaurant that has the feel of being in Switzerland. One of the best wine selections in town, from new world to old world, if you cannot decide, just ask.

This multi-generation restaurant is an absolute neighborhood gem! It's super small and intimate, and is like being an invited guest to dine in the chef's kitchen. Third time here and always awesome. Jeremey our server tonight was delightful. Make a reservation as the restaurant is very small and very popular with locals.

Went here for a Friday date night. Did al fresco due to limited seating inside. The prix fixe menu was nice. The sauces that accompanied the entrees elevated the courses. With the cold night, the soupy dishes were quite comforting. The dessert trio was good, although we thought one of them was a little dry. Service was quick and efficient. Street parking is decent, but I can see how it could be difficult on a busier night.

This restaurant is a gem for French and Swiss cuisine enthusiast! Their All You Can Eat Raclette night is a must-try, offering an authentic experience that will leave you craving for more! Atleast I do Be sure to call ahead and inquire about their schedule, as it's usually held on the first Tuesday of the month only and sometimes they might also extend it. This family-owned establishment boasts a cozy yet elegant atmosphere, perfect for a romantic evening out or with friends! With a focus on fine dining, seating is limited, so reservations are a must and call ahead and ask them for availability. The service is impeccable, and the food is simply amazing!!! If you're a cheese lover as much as I do, the raclette experience is tailored just for you! Their traditional French and Swiss dishes, such as Beef Bourguignon, are cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. I highly recommend this restaurant for its exceptional cuisine and warm ambiance!!!

    Blue crab salad

We'd been wanting to try this restaurant for years and finally did. What a charming ambiance and wonderful food! We had the signature veal in mushroom sauce, duck breast, beef bourguignon, blue crab salad and of course, raclette. Everything was delicious, fresh and tres European. And the service was very gracious. We loved it and look forward to going back! Highly recommend!

Sweet little dining room with 9 tables. Reservations are recommended.

Had a glass of white wine which was recommended by the manager/sommelier while we browsed the menu. As our friends have dined here several times, we started to nibble on the whipped ricotta, burratina, empanadas and the pan con tomate w/jamon. All 4 were delicious but the empanadas were amazing! Our table was ready once we finished the 4 appetizers. Next up we decided on the tiger prawns, branzino and seared scallops. Thought the prawns were a tad bit overcooked as it was a bit tough. The scallops were well seasoned and especially loved the saffron risotto. Finally, the branzino was cooked perfectly but wasn't a fan of the romesco sauce as it tasted sweet to me. Though we were absolutely stuffed, we ended up trying their creme brûlée, gelato/sorbet flight and their olive cake. I absolutely loved the creme brûlée as the custard was super light. The gelato/sorbet flight was also tasty but sadly wasn't a fan of the olive cake. The place was packed and patrons seemed to stay for a few hours at a time. Only complaint is with how loud it can get with both the music and patrons drinking countless bottles of wine. Service was phenomenal and would definitely head back if in the area. Although they do validate for the 1st hour, we ended up staying for quite some time and parking ended up costing another $18.

Yesterday, I came here for my birthday lunch with my mom after she made a reservation, and honestly, I wish we had just gone somewhere else. We sat down right at our 1:00 reservation and then waited 35 minutes just to get a drink menu. Not food. Not to order. Just the menu for drinks. After we finally ordered, the champagne showed up about 20 minutes later. It was served in wine glasses, which feels like basic wine bar knowledge, but apparently not here. When we asked to switch them to champagne glasses, the waiter brought out smaller wine glasses. Not exactly good etiquette for a place that leans so heavily on its bar concept. The whipped ricotta appetizer came out even later, around the 65 minute mark. As an appetizer. It was fine, probably the best thing we had, but "fine" after that kind of wait is not a positive. From there, everything just dragged. It took almost an hour for my mom's meatballs to come out, and when they did, they were raw. Not slightly underdone. Fully pink in the middle. She sent them back and was so turned off she didn't even want to eat anything else. I ordered a salad and specifically asked for light dressing. What I got was the opposite. It was drenched in a thick, heavy dressing that made the whole thing borderline inedible and the lettuce soggy. After our food, I tried to order drip coffee, which they didn't have, so I settled for an Americano. I asked for warm cream, which I've had done at plenty of places, and somehow it came out clotted. If you know anything about coffee, that shouldn't happen. At this point, we had been there for over two and a half hours. For a salad, an appetizer, and four raw meatballs. The server was very nice and doing his best with being busy. BUT, the overall operation felt completely disorganized and untrained. We weren't the only ones either. The couple next to us was also complaining after waiting 40 minutes just to order breakfast items. To make it even better, parking is only comped for 90 minutes. So because of their slow service, we ended up paying for parking on top of overpriced, underwhelming food. What should have been a 45 minute lunch turned into a 2.5 hour ordeal. The bathroom also wasn't clean either time I went, which pretty much sums up the lack of attention to detail across the board. The only slightly redeeming part was the crème brûlée, which was... fine. Not amazing. Just fine. It's a pretty space. I'll give them that. But that's about where the positives end. The food is not good, the timing is unacceptable, and the whole experience feels like Instagram style over quality and substance. Definitely not worth the money, and not somewhere I'd ever go back to.

It's waterfront and can be accessed via the boardwalk (it's behind the street-side shops). Parking can be tough and very expensive - you'll likely have to park in the structure and walk over. Make sure to take your ticket with you for validation. Seating is available inside and outside on their covered patio. Plenty of space for parties of all sizes. I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to make a same-day reservation for a Sunday afternoon. They had plenty of open seating even when we got there. Tables were very dirty. They have a lot of work to do - it seems like months if not years of food, dust, and salty moist air mixed together and collected in the creases in the tables, on the walls, etc.. It's like a sticky gross residue that never gets completely clean. Many people like to dress nice in the area but honestly I would hate to wear something nice here out of fear it would get dirty. We also required new plates as ours had old food stuck to them. Service was not great. Our waiter was somewhat attentive but not nice - the poor guy seemed miserable like he hated his job and did not want to be there. Despite the restaurant being full, he wouldn't come by often when we actually needed something - he even disappeared towards the end and a new waiter had to help us. Food is delicious. Besides the location, their saving grace. We tried the sandwiches and yummy! Fries were also delicious with the spicy mayo. Love the different options they have, overall. They also had some great looking food on the brunch and drinks section of the menu. You can scan the QR code at the table to see pictures of each menu item.
