Finally tried Basilic Restaurant in Newport Beach. Ask for Alex. Definitely worth the money. Food was excellent, wine pairing was perfect, and service was excellent. We choose the wine pairing and five course meal, which included a dessert trio. Servers are familiar with cutlery etiquette so that was a plus! Servers knew when to take my plate away, when we loved the food, and when we were just pausing btw bites, etc. There's nothing that makes me cringe more than having my plate go missing when I walk away. Seriously, there are "fine dining" places where the servers are snobby, but lack fine dining etiquette. It's sad. Basilic isn't one of those places. read more

One of my all time favorite restaurants in the Newport Beach/Irvine area! The restaurant itself is very small and intimate with maybe a dozen or so seats. The cuisine is traditional French and Swiss and my god is it delicious. The bouillabaisse here is the best I've ever had - so intricately spiced and mind-blowingly delicious. The vegetables were tender and perfectly cooked, the fish cooked with fresh herbs and spices, and the stew itself was an indescribable saffron-y delight. I did not think it could get any better than this. But I was wrong. Dessert was an unparalleled experience. I strongly considered going with the creme brulee, but never in my life have been more glad I said "No" to the creme brulee (I never thought this day would come). Instead, I chose the caramelized pecan walnut chocolate tart with a creme anglaise, and it was hands down the best decision of the day. Words cannot do justice to describe the culinary experience that is this chocolate tart - it's definitely something everyone has to experience for themselves! Just an update. After frequenting this fine establishment a few times now, I can think of no other restaurant to enjoy a proper dinner. The wine list is detailed and extensive. The food, the food is never anything short of awesome and the best. Hidden gem. The two easiest words to describe this restaurant. I came across this restaurant from Zagat, and we were not disappointed on any level. For me, it was an instant transportation to the Ile de la Cité in Paris, such lovely bistros with quality above and beyond the American norm. 1) 2011 Terrebrune Bordeaux, this was a great pairing for our meals. But overall the wine list is deep and very thought through. 2) Beef tenderloin tartare. No words here just that this was the best steak tartare I have tasted. The portion was spot on and tasted excellent along with the wine. 3) Rack of lamb. Presented with poached vegetables and potato cauliflower mash. The crust on this lamb zinged with lemon and thyme, however not enough to overpower your palate. Remarkable. 4) Chef special filet mignon. Nicely seared and finished in the oven. Filets have always seemed bland to me when compared to a ribeye but this one was different, it had depth. 5) creme brûlée and chef special dessert. If you enjoy classic French dishes as much as I do, then you will love this Swiss/French restaurant. I went there for dinner with family and everyone loved It as we dined alfresco. We started with some salads that were delicious. The greens tasted very fresh and were dressed with a classic style French vinaigrette with a twist of finely chopped basil. Then, we shared melted raclette cheese. Chef Bernard Althaus was very hospitable as he greeted us and checked to see if we having a good time. Our entrees were bouillabaisse , coq au vin, and beef bourguignon. They were all delicious. But, the stand out dish out of the three was the coq au vin which was very good. A family member also raved about the onion soup. We washed it all down with a very nice bottle of French rose. I don't remember the winery, but I believe it was the only rose on the menu. I ended my meal with a nice sweet tarte tatin that was accompanied with vanilla bean ice cream. read more

This place exceeded my expectations beyond belief. Easily the best dinner I've had in a very very long time due to covid. We started with the charcuterie board which was small but tasty, wish it had a more than one cheese though. For main course we had the filet and the John Dory. Let me tell you the filet melts in your mouth like butter. Better than any steakhouse I've been to. The John Dory was crispy and light and packed with flavor. Raclette review only: I've lived in Newport my whole life (literally up the street from balboa island) but I have never actually been to a restaurant on the balboa. You're probably saying "keb dats so cray!" I know, insane right??? Well anyways we decided to try the Basilica for raclette night. They serve it once a month for four months out of the year only. It's all you can eat so make sure you are ready to roll out of the restaurant with a belly full of cheese. So y'all probably want to hear about the food. There are two options for the raclette, veggie or meat. Basically the difference is that the meat option comes with an added assortment of salami, prosciutto, and a few other hams. The sides are potatoes, cornichons, and pickled bulb onions. Overall, it was amazing. It's a small intimate restaurant with only about eight tables. The chef brings out two blocks of raclette and broils the top so it gets ooey, gooey, and crusty. The crusted part was amazing. Imagine the cheese that oozes out of a quesadilla and fries on the pan; it was that except on crack. The cheese works well with all the sides but my favorite is the pickled onion and cheese combo. The vinegary and brininess of the onion cuts the fattiness of the cheese. It is a combo made in heaven. You should definitely check it out read more

Awesome Bouillabaisse at this little gem of a restaurant on Balboa Island. Always accommodating as we called and they squeezed us in last minute :) Owners are Swiss "the real deal", server is French and super nice and professional. Great food, great ambiance for a date ;) The Charcuterie appetizer was so "Euro", felt like we were in Zermat in the Swiss Alps "après ski". The Meringue Coulis Dessert was next level. I've only been here a few times over the past ten years, but this place is consistently some of the best Swiss and French food around. One hundred percent worth the drive from LA. And if you're not local, maybe spend the night in the area--the wine at Basilic is great too. Not only does Stephane and the team put out great food, the place is so quaint and charming as well. With only a handful of tables, Basilic is somewhere between alpine chalet and Balboa nautical. My boyfriend and I ordered the tasting menu for our anniversary. The tasting menu is $59 a person for 5 courses. When we first walked in I was shocked by how small the restaurant is. It is probably the size of my bedroom. The whole restaurant can seat like 19 people and had a whopping 7 tables. It inspired me to open a restaurant in my garage. I loved the room, it made me feel exclusive and important. When we arrived we were alone in the restaurant with another couple who was already seated. Little by little the restaurant started to fill up and my boyfriend kept laughing at me for whispering throughout the dinner. I could hear everyone else's conversations so I felt like they could hear mine. The decor is very quaint and homey. Our server was adorable and very helpful. I loved hearing him talk to the kitchen staff in French, I felt like I was in Paris. Okay enough chit chat and on to the good part, the FOOD! Since the tasting menu changes I won't go in to detail but the food was delicious. Granted some entrees were tastier than others but even the worst of the dishes was better than average. And portions are very fair. I was stuffed by the time they brought out the dessert trio. I will definitely be back, but probably for another special occasion. Tips: Definitely make a reservation and if you can splurge, go for the tasting menu. Balboa Island is like a gated community because instead of gates they have the bay which you can liken to a moat surrounding a castle. This moat protects all the people who reside in the 92662 from the drunken bro barbarians outside its walls, and luckily they don't have a draw bridge. Instead, you just have to drive over the bridge, and you're within blocks of Basilic. It looks as though not all the barbarians have figured this out. Basilic has an intimate 24-seat ("intimate" and my "dude friends" don't go hand'n'hand here) comfy atmosphere and some fairly reasonably priced food - $59 for a 5-6 course meal. Be sure to read "Charlene C's" review. It's very useful unlike mine because I'll start to babble. Actually the rest of the reviews are also very helpful. I google/wikipedia everything, so here's a couple things you might not know about Balboa Island... here's your chance at filling your brain with trivial information which will push out your ATM PIN number, significant others bday/anniversay, or high school geometry: 1). Out of 3,000 very densely packed residents in a 0.2 mile radius (more dense than SF), approx 260 of them speak French on Balboa Island. 2). Another interesting fact is that it's also one of the most expensive real estate markets in North America which really is no big surprise. The average price for a 2 bedroom home with a water view is $3 million dollars which is equivalent to Lower Manhattan. 3). Basilic is listed as French, but it's specifically "Swiss French" cuisine. With a little research, it looks like the most popular dishes of the French part of Switzerland is a leeks and sausage dish (papet vaudois), fondue (come on, you got to know this), and cheese on potatoes (raclette). Don't know if these dishes were on the menu here, but leeks was definitely an ingredient. I live in the 92663 amongst the barbarians, but I will definitely want to go back with a hot wench for another try of Basilic. read more

More on her in a bit... And since God did not bless me with the $206 million lottery win, the free dinner was much appreciated. I chose Basilic because, let's face it, in a sea of chains and wanna be chains it is tough to find a good independent restaurant that isn't Asian and per various reviews including Yelp, Basilic seemed to fit the bill. For all of its wealth and density, Orange County still has a paucity of interesting neighborhood restaurants especially ones that are European. And since The Secret Agent has spent some time skiing in Switzerland, in addition to having a French heritage, we made our way on a freakishly foggy and wet night to this intimate establishment on Balboa Island. I was a bit under the weather which The Secret Agent picked up immediately, even though I tried to hide this fact, because she has been trained in psychology and human behavior (I jest). Because of my slight cold, we started with a carrot-curry soup and then split a Salade Chèvre Chaude (Frisée Lettuce topped with Goat Cheese Onion Marmalade Tartlette Candied Walnuts, Nicoise Olives and Aged Balsamic Dressing). Surprisingly...especially with how I was feeling, I enjoyed the salad more than the soup. The soup was overly sweet and under seasoned whereas the salads multiple flavors coalesced into a delightful palate refresher. Entrees were Seafood Risotto and Magret de Canard (Oven roasted duck breast with pomegranate sauce). Both were subtle renditions that could have used a bit more flavoring and seasoning. These renditions were playing it safe and would have been greeted with yawns in Paris and certainly were greeted with yawns at our table. Desserts were underwhelming versions of a special berry tarte and creme brulee. Should have held out and gotten a frozen banana on Marine Ave :) Service was very good...friendly and efficient without calling attention. Wine list was small but smartly chosen...with only 24 seats I know they cannot have that large of a selection but what they did paired perfectly with the food. I enjoyed the Champagne I ordered very much. Obviously, based on food this is more like a three star restaurant but I'm going to give them that fourth star for the service, for the wine list and because they are a successful small independent in a County lacking in such. I know they have to play it safe for the Balboa crowd but I wish the chef would take some chances especially with his sauces and seasonings. Now this lunch wasn't just for my birthday, but, in a manner of speaking, to say goodbye to my spy friend who is leaving for another mission and will be gone for months (I kid again, she will be gone for months but not on a secret mission). And maybe the jokes about being a spy can be annoying to her because it seems to discount her work...which of course I'm really not doing (as I'm sure her other friends are not doing by making similar jokes). People come in and out of our lives so frequently...the impact they make can only be measured by what they leave you with, and hopefully what you gave them. I once dated someone who if nothing else I took the brand of toothpaste I now currently use :) I'm not sure what I gave The Secret Agent other than some occasional amusement but what I took from her was her passion for her life...which I admire very much...and the reaffirmation that one should not only do what they love, but, that one should also never forget how fortunate they are to live in this place and time...with the resources we have...that to always be grateful when the lucky accident of birth can give you opportunities billions of other people (staggering number when you think about it) never had or will have. Like very few people that I know...she understands her great fortune and it fuels her desire to use her gifts, not only to accomplish what she wants to accomplish professionally and academically, but, also to make the world a better place. With too many people floating around this world like unfeeling zombies, too many adults with childlike ambitions and childlike pursuits and childlike emotions; we need more passionate and committed people like her....she makes money and makes a difference. They don't have to be mutually exclusive. So thanks Secret Agent for floating in and around my life...thanks for the dinner...and hopefully we will see you sometime again in the future...after you save the world of course ;) read more

First time ever coming to this special little area. It looks like nothing like the rest of the OC. A comfortable place to be and looks great for family time. Basilic one of the tiny fancy restaurants in the area. This place only fits like 20 people at most. My bedroom looks bigger than this place. You feel special here. You get the attention being in this place. A fancy place without all the noise and unneeded space. I took my gf here a few days after Valentine's day. The very intimate restaurant had a small menu. It was pretty easy to order from and the portions were just right. They brought out a piece of toast with some type of cheese on it. Then a loaf of bread and butter. Which were all complimentary. For the appetizer I went with the French onion soup. This was a bit bland and not something I would recommend unless you're sick. For my main dish I had the rack of lamb. I ordered it medium rare and it came out perfect. So very tender was the meat. The veggies that came with it were good. The only part I didn't enjoy were the mashed potatoes. That tasted a little frozen. This is a perfect spot for a date. Very nice and friendly. The pricing isn't too bad either for a fancy spot. read more

What a cute homey restaurant. To grasp that intimate setting, there are very few tables here. Reservations are a must and they close relatively early from other restaurants. Only one waiter in the dining experience too. There were 5 of us who dined here last week and had an enjoyable night. For apps, we had the buratta cheese special, crab dish and endives salad. Both were very tasty. The crab was delicious and wasn't a true crab cake. I was impressed with the portion amount and crab selection for this dish. Paired with a hint of Dijon mustard that gave it a nice flavor. I am a huge fan of scallops so I like to try different places to see how they are prepared. These were delicious and paired with Mexican White Shrimp! The lamb is the most popular. It literally melted in your mouth like butter ! Excellent preparation ! We indulged in some yummy desserts too ! Enjoyed a 1/2 bottle of Prosecco, white wine and of course my favorite, port wine ! Went here for my boyfriend's birthday with his folks. When we first walk in, we notice that the place is very small and quaint. The set up of the restaurant was country French cottage, however the table settings were very detailed. The service was great. The waiter always kept our water glasses filled with iced water and he made sure that our wine glasses were filled to the appropriate amount (that is if you bought a bottle of wine). So a great start already. For appetizers, we got the Fresh Blue Crab Cake, the Viande Sechee "Bunderfleish" and the Foie Gras. The crab cake was delicious! Honestly, probably the best crab cake I've ever had at a restaurant. The crab was fresh because it tasted like they prepared the meat that day and it was flavored just right. As for the Bunderfieish... if you like cold cuts this is the app for you. To me, it tasted good, not too salty however all meaty. I would suggest this dish if you really love eating meats. And lastly the foie gras was AMAZING! It was prepared fantastically!!! The liver was very fatty, very delicious and it was cooked with boysenberries and served on a piece of butter toasted. If you haven't had foie gras yet, I think you should try it here for your first time. You won't be disappointed at all. My boyfriend's mom and I got the soup of the day which was mushroom fennel and thyme soup, while my boyfriend got the Soupe à L`Oignon and the mom's boyfriend got the Salade Maison. The soup was great!! Both bf's mom and I loved it. My bf enjoyed his soup, he loved how cheesy it was. As for the mom's bf he enjoyed his salad as well. For our entrees, my boyfriend's mom order the Saint Pierre aux`Epices, her dish looked amazing and she really enjoyed her dish. Her bf got the grilled steak and he absolutely ate every bite up. For my boyfriend, he got the Magret de Canard, beside looking delicious, it tasted amazing. The duck was very plump and meaty. Having it with the some mash potatoes was so exquisite. (As I'm writing about it, I am slowly craving for it now.) As for myself, I got the Wild King Salmon, it was served with pilaf rice and veggies. The salmon was super fresh and delicious. Having it was the pilaf rice and veggies accented the whole thing. I enjoyed my entree very much and recommend it to anyone who is feels like some salmon for the night. And we couldn't leave without dessert. We got the Seasonal Mixed Berries and the Crème Brulée. And they were great! Overall experience: service, atmosphere and FOOD! 5 STARS!!!! Made reservations here for a very special dinner, to celebrate my engagement earlier that day. I had reservations at a couple other restaurants that evening, but decided that this would be the most appropriate. The place is tiny, extremely intimate and cozy. We started off with the blue crab, which was excellent. Very fresh and savory. Then the daily special soup - mushroom and asparagus. For her main course she had the scallops and shrimp and I had a daily special filet mignon. To finish we had the creme brulee, which I'm not a fan of in general, but this was excellent. Everything we had was deliciousness personified and the service was pretty great as well. I was very satisfied and was very glad to have a celebratory dinner in a nice, quiet restaurant. This place is so romantic! It resembles a cute little bistro in Paris. I'm in love with the intimate setting which reminds me very much of The Little Door in LA but maybe 1/5 of the size. There are only about 8 tables total so you can imagine how small the place is. We came here for date night and it was the perfect choice! Both of us decided on the tasting menu to get a feel for the food since it was our first time. The tasting menu is 5 courses, changes nightly and about $60/person. They also have an amazing selection of French wine, we asked our waiter to choose something for us and he ended up bringing us a Chateauneuf du Pape, Dom Du Galet des Papes which paired perfectly with our meal. This little gem will definitely be one of our date-night go-to places! Tip: Make sure to make a reservation because the place is small. What an evening. I get to travel a lot and let me tell you.. last nights dinner at Basilic, which was the first time we had been there, was incredible. It was a special occasion - my wifes birthday and I couldn't have asked for more. Firstly this place gets booked up because a) it's fantastic and b) they literally only have 8 tables. So get your booking in early to avoid disappointment. It's a small, very comfortable and charming room that transports you from the beach town vibe of balboa island and into a chalet on the Swiss side of the alps. We were greeted immediately and sat promptly at 7:30pm which was our reservation time. The staff are fantastic throughout and even the owner and chef came out to greet us after service. Lovely touch. I asked for a recommendation for either their Steak Au Poivre which I had eyed up online in some yelp and TripAdvisor reviews, or the special which was a Filet Mignon. The gent suggested the Filet. I asked for a good red to go with it as I wanted to keep it old world wine.. when in Rome.. or Switzerland.. he suggested one. I ordered it. We started with their specialty the Raclette - Swiss cheese cooked a special way, sliced thin and then served with bread, cocktail onions, cornichons and little baby tats. Amazing! Next I had the most amazing French (Swiss) Onion Soup - no lie, great depth of flavor and richness with gooey gruyere cheese and the crouton on top. YUM. My wife's Goat cheese & onion marmalade tartlet on frisee was delish too. On to the Main event - wife had the John Dory which was exquisite and had a surprising curried flavor in there, which being brits we're happy to eat. Now let me tell you about THAT FILET.. oh baby. One of the best entree's i've ever eaten, anywhere. If you see it on the specials menu, don't think, just order it and you can thank me later.. WOW. Every bite fantastic.. druewling a little as I write this.. these tiny little discs of crunchy but melt in your mouth roasted potatoes, fresh veggies and of course you can't go to a french restaurant without some of the best sauces, it's what they do.. the porcini red wine sauce was incredible. Just when I didn't think it could get better, I have a swig of the french red wine our server suggested.. BANG go my taste buds. Absolute heaven exploding in my mouth. The wine was the half bottle of the Bandol.. (it's a grenache, syrah blend) Stuffed but committed to get to dessert, my wife had the Caramelized pecan walnut chocolate tarte with creme anglaise. now if you like chocolate.. oh mumma.. they put a single long candle in it for my wife which was very cute of them. I always have to have a creme brûlée if its no a menu. This was better than most. I've had one at 2 of Gordon Ramsey's London restaurants and they tasted like burnt plastic on top and grainy creme.. this was light, smooth and delicious. People get down there. We live in Laguna Niguel and will be making the trip to Basilic often. It's not a cheap night out - all that food, plus a full bottle of Sancerre and the half bottle of red was circa $250. Fabulous food, wonderful service. Five of us in this very small, wonderful restaurant last night. We were all adults. Children would find the experience confining. There is no children's menu and the plates and food were served very hot. It was a lovely dining experience and the highlight of the week's trip. The food was beautifully prepared, served and presented in a leisurely atmosphere with no rush at any point. All the selections we made were really wonderful. Highly recommend for adults. Woah. This place was AMAZING. It had the most amazing service, the older gentleman who waited on my fiance & I was beyond sweet, the music was beautiful to hear while we enjoyed our meal, and the ambiance was so so.. friendly. We made friends with the rest of the people inside the restaurant & left with our stomachs full & our hearts happy. Went there on a anniversary date and we ordered a tasting menu, which has 5 courses including a salad and dessert. We really loved it. The wait time between each courses are reasonable. All the dish on the tasing menu are not on their regular menu. But I would definitely come back again. Outstanding! Incredible food, service and ambiance. True Swiss experience. A Gem! The only problem is getting a reservation...

I reserved a table for my birthday for 6 people, but the 6th person arrived late and didn't order anything and they still charged a gratuity for the 6th person. We spent 2 hours there just because the service was so sporadic, when we were more than ready to order within 30 min of sitting. For the price it's not worth the service, serving size nor the quality of the food. The service was extremely slow, we were totally confused who our server was because there's was like 5 different people who came the the table to seat us, take the drink order 3 separate times, food order, give drinks, give the food, and some one else for the bill; they didn't explain the wine menu or ask if we had questions about the menu and seemed rush, the food wasn't given together (mine was given let when the others has their dinner almost half done), and the food was Luke warm when served as if they forgot about serving my dish! read more

Had a great dinner here this weekend. Great wine selection. Had the Steak Tartare, Squash Soup and Duck. Well prepared in true authentic French/Swiss style. Not too rich, creamy or cheesy like most American interpretation of French food. Great service, quaint and charming 8 table restaurant. Nice choice for a special occasion dinner. read more
