Always an amazing experience. Went last week for the wife's birthday and that was really the first time since Covid shutdowns that we went out. The food was great, service was fast and what impressed me the most is our waitress also paid attention to our 18 month old, he even got some snacks and when he's happy dinner is better and we are happy. Can't believe it has taken me this long to finally experience Basque Norte. Went here for my birthday. Had the sangria, which was amazing , and a few appetizers. The mushroom caps were truly delicious. My husband and son shared a massive t-bone (20 oz or more). They said it was amazing. I went for the 3 lamb chops. Garlicky and rareness heaven. I enjoyed all the parts of the meal---and the ice cream ---kind of a toffee praline---was just the right finish. I will definitely be back (oh, just a warning. , don't let the ole manager lady put you off ---clearly doesn't handle stress, so try to ignore her---loss of one star for her 'tude.) read more

Ok full disclosure, this place is pricey but you get a fantastic meal. I was looking for a steakhouse in Chico and there wasn't a lot to choose from. The Yelp reviews for the other steakhouse said surf & turf was $75!! The average entree at BN is $48.00. This includes filet, ribeye, New York, etc. The great thing about this place is all the sides are served family style. You all get the same things except your entree. Once you order the food comes out so fast because we all get the same sides so its easy for them and fast for us. They also get free refills of all sides if you want. There is nothing to prepare to order except the meat, seafood or pasta. You get fresh hot bread, an amazing tomato garlic soup, tossed salad, red potatoes, baked beans, green beans, garlic spaghetti and vanilla ice cream scoop for dessert. We were stuffed and definitely got our money's worth here. If I had a complaint it would be...well ok two complaints. Dessert included a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream but man I wanted some syrup on top and it wasn't gonna happen. Other issue is potatoes and green beans are cooked in a lot of butter. Sure butter is great and easily creates flavor but the sides could have been good or even better with less butter and more seasoning and TLC. Overall this place completely met my expectations and will not go anywhere else in Chico for a great steak meal. read more

I don't know why we didn't try this steak house sooner. We had the 14 oz ribeye and it was phenomenal, it had to be one of the best steaks we have ever had. It was also so hot I was sweating and couldn't enjoy the 2 sides I could eat bcuz it was all warm. Loud kids and other guests were yelling. I have been in the Tapas side of this restaurant a few times and never had a problem. Tonight, I ate a horrible tasting and grisly rib eye steak on the dinner side of the restaurant. The sides are NOT impressive and the service lacked professionalism. The waitress hardly was available. We told her about the steak and she did nothing. We ordered a full pitcher and when joking with one of the waiters about how much it was and how we wouldn't be able to finish it, he said, " I'll bottle it for you." What? The Tapas were amazing. This is a beautiful restaurant way out on the Esplanade -- just go North, keep driving, even after you think you're lost, and you'll find it on the left. Definitely worth the hike. Menu includes an assortment of grilled meats and fish, pastas, surf & turf -- each diner orders their own entree, and then all the side dishes are served family style, in the Basque tradition. I love the interior -- it's like stepping into a big welcoming family home. The walls are covered with Basque memorabilia. The service is friendly and accommodating. The reason they get 4 stars and not five is because I felt that for the value, the prices were on the high side. None of the side dishes were Wow! or even memorable -- we left most of them behind. (Other Yelpers have already nicely described what you get with the full meal.) We both ordered the New York steaks, and they were about $25 each. The steaks were tasty; however, I ordered mine cooked medium-well and it came out well done, with the outside definitely on the char side of the equation. I've enjoyed other Basque restaurants where the side dishes are scrumptious -- and the prices are dramatically less. (If you're heading South, try the Wool Grower's Club in Los Banos!) This would be a good place for CSU Chico students to let their parents or grandparents take them to. read more

Humm. Should I have the meat? Or the meat? You know that feeling when you go into a new restaurant and you eat like a pig, because everything is so good? Well, this wasn't one of those times. Let me tell you how this night went. We got there at five, so we were the first in the dining room. Quickly acknowledged, by hostess and waitstaff. Water and menus were quick. The dining room looked like it probably did when they opened. Italian opera posters and huge, old wine barrels decorated the walls. Cheap, tacky tables and chairs to sit in. A pretty, but dated, bar. But who the heck cares if the food is good? Since I had been lusting over the menu for some time, I knew the best deal-- a ginormous porterhouse steak for the same price as the filet or the rib eye. Now, if you know the cut, a porterhouse is a NY steak and a filet with a bone in the middle. NY is my hubby's favorite, and I like a flavorful filet. We usually share a porterhouse. But it was my birthday. Hubby got three lamb chops and a quail. He wasn't suffering, either. So, for a bit more than most places, at Basque Norte, you get large amounts of food-- no need for appetizers or a separate dessert cost, everything, including the ice cream, is included. You have to pay for a drink, but, hey, water is free. The relish plate was just how I like marinated veggies. Crisp, tasty. Not enough of those, for my taste. Then the endless side dishes. We are trying for low carb, but the spaghetti with butter, garlic, and something else, was too die for. Gulp, gulp. *remember to save room for the meat.* The beans were PDG. (That is my new text speak for, "Pretty Damn Good." The salad and the soup, and the green beans... otherwise known as "the healthy foods?" Not so great. Ice burg lettuce, canned green beans... you get the picture. But this was not a night to eat healthy. Then the meat came. And all else was forgotten. Three waitstaff had to carry my porterhouse. Okay, that is a lie. But it was big. My eyes bugged at the sight of a well-charred piece of meat. Hubby's quail and lamb chops were PDB. (my new text speak for, "pretty damn big"), as well. The first bite... Sigh. You know when you take a bite of something and it is so crazy good that, in order to appease the culinary gods, you rest your fork and knife on the table and look to heaven (the left side of sky) while you chew? It was that good. And, either because I mentioned that it was my birthday, or that they recognized a foodie who worships great steak, they brought me a piece of mud pie. Which is now in the freezer. Dined her this weekend and almost didn't write a yelp review because I am so conflicted! First, I agree with many of the reviewers that this place is just meh.... and could use an update, but I grew up going here. I also have to take into consideration the uniqueness of ths place and what else is available in Chico.....does nostalgia win? I can't decide.... First, the building is dated, driving up is concerning if it is your first time. There is absolutely no exterior charm. Second, the interior is like stepping back in time - to 1978. Nothing has been updated or changed as far as I can tell. The room is dark and quiet. Again, not particularly charming, but their wooden cutout of Spain is cute, and the lighting is nice. For the food. I've been to basque country in Spain and never had anything remotely similar to this food. But, that doesn't mean it is bad. It jut isn't authentic. I like that the food is family style, but you get to choose your own main dish. They call the sides the "set up", which includes the soup, potatoes, greenbeans and pasta served family style. You have to like garlic to enjoy their side dishes, the soup is garlic tomato and the pasta is garlic too. The three people with me ordered steak, and really enjoyed them. I got chicken and enjoyed it, it was marinaded in their famous marinade that you can buy. Overall, I'll go with 3 stars....would go back, but don't crave their food....would like to see them do a bit of updating, but at least you have some variety in Chico because they are here..... read more

Had dinner on Saturday December 27th. Arrived about 7:30 PM just a short wait to be seated in the dinning room so had a drink at the bar. This is the FIRST time having dinner here, last time ( last review) was just experiencing the drinks and Tapas. By far this has probably been the BEST steaks we have ever had out and "hands down" the BEST steak meal in Chico! Cooked to perfection! Had the 14 oz ribeye and the meals come with a garlic soup/ fresh salad/ warm bread and a few other sides: like garlic pasta, sliced new potatoes, green beans and baked beans. Yes, all this is included in the cost and the soup, it's homemade! Finish with a Creamy Praline Ice Cream for dessert! Price was affordable, food was fabulous, service and atmosphere was wonderful. Been going to Basque Norte since I was a kid and it's always been awesome! I always pig out on the shared dishes, and then take most of my entre home. If you want a killer steak, get the Porterhouse. So worth the money. The shared dishes are simple, but also great. Great service too! Went last night and our waitress was excellent. Love this old school steak house. Its my favorite steak house that I have been too. The steaks are out of this world good. My son can eat a bowl of the pasta by himself. This is truly a old school spot, there is next to no advertising, its old school inside and the parking lot is still full all week long. Great job! read more
