Food was okay but some items seemed overpriced. $60 steak was okay. Pastas were good overall. Service was not great and ambiance does not seem to match prices. We were sitting under the air conditioner and our table kept getting condensation water dropped on us through out the meal. There were drops every couple minutes landing on us, the food, and in our drinks. When we brought up to waiter he said they would need to turn off the AC unit in order for the condensation to stop and that it would get way to warm inside. It was also our first time attending and my mom's bday that night, when it came to dessert, we didn't know the bday rule. But pretty much you pay for dessert and they put a sparkler in it for you. Lunchtime, mid-week, the place is at best 25% busy. So why was the service so SLLLLLOOOOOWWWWWW and INATTENTIVE? Took 15 minutes just to get a glass of wine. Never got the bread and oil I asked for. Never had a chance to order another glass of wine as no one bothered to check in with us once the food was dropped off. This place has a significant staffing issue, at least during our lunch visit. Not sure if its a quantity of staff issue or a quality of staff issue. But either way the service overall was atrocious. Food was good however. And the atmosphere both inside and one the patio is airy and bright and not overly packed with tables which is why I did not give them 1-star. But seriously, get some staff that understands what service is, at least during lunch. Try to learn things like promptness, checking in during the meal, etc. read more

I was so excited to finally try this Basta as I've heard great things about the Agoura location. I wish I could give this a 5 star rating, but unfortunately, our experience was not what we had hoped. Wait time (2/5)- an hour and 15 minutes. I get that it's busy at dinner time on the weekends, but there is no place to sit while you wait, and they won't take your cell number or give you a pager, so you can't even go get a drink elsewhere while you wait. And we would have tried to get a drink at the bar, but there was no room. Host (1/5)- Needs more training. There were 2 young gentlemen working the host stand (both looked like they were maybe 17-20 years old). One was very polite (but he was the quieter one). We put in our name the other one told us the wait time and then immediately jumped in with excuses about problems in the kitchen and it's a busy night. I don't know why he even shared those details as clearly we could see it was busy and never questioned the wait time. Unfortunately, his tone came off a bit arrogant. Maybe it was a long night for him (or maybe he was warning us, as you'll see from the rest of my review). It was our first time there and didn't really set the best tone for the evening. Ambiance (4/5)- A bit loud inside and difficult to maintain a conversation with people across the table from you, but the setting is gorgeous. Service (2/5)- Slow and seemed to miss some basics. They really needed at least 2 more waiters/waitresses that night. We ordered some wine, which was nice, and water for the table. They were short 2 glasses and we had to ask twice for additional glasses. They took over 30 minutes to take our food order. They also didn't have enough table settings, and we had to request that twice. When they brought dessert, there were no spoons provided. Had to ask for that as well. Salads (5/5)- Delicious! The best part of the meal. Highly recommend the lemon roasted jidori chicken and quinoa salad. We ordered a couple of other salads for the table, and they were good, but this one is a must try. Entrees (3/5) - Pappardelle (flavor good, meatballs very salty), Tagliatelle al Ragu (great flavor, but very dry, almost no sauce on the pasta, just mainly ground meat and pasta). Dessert (2/5) - The tiramisu was just okay. Mainly mascarpone cream, with little flavor. They also use biscotti instead of lady fingers, which would have been fine if they were soaked in coffee, but the biscotti pieces were large, dry, and too hard to bite. Overall I'm giving it a 2.5/5. It would have been a 1 but the salad, wine, and ambiance made up for some of it. I hesitate to go back as it seems very overrated. read more

The Good: Great food, drinks, and service. The Not so Good: Super loud inside. Can hardly have a conversation. Next time will opt for patio seating. The Bad: Bringing steaks from the cooler at the hostess area by tongs without a plate or covering and placing them directly on the Expo counter to prepare for cooking. I don't see how that can be sanitary and pass a health inspection. Would never eat a steak here after seeing that. read more

Ordered the "special" duck ragu tagliarini. When you have to ask the waiter to confirm what was served was indeed duck (it was mostly ground beef/pork) with imperceptible amounts of duck, something is wrong. Same with the kale salad with "marinated pear". There was one sliver (about 1/4") of pear in the entire salad. The pizza carbonara was lacking much of any toppings (the outside crust was 4") and generally dry. Hey, but the free bread was good. I would rather pay more and have what is described vs. a bait and switch. read more

4pm on Sat 2/8, seated in the corner of the restaurant. Ask for a child's cup of water , got the child's cup, but no straw???? Ask for bread, repeatedly. Waiter's response was , "we are in transition of support staff"???? Basically got the bread well after wine & dinks. After asking 3 times. We were celebrating my Mom's 89th bday! She doesn't eat much anymore, she saw the child's spaghetti & meatball that my 3 year granddaughter got. She said that's perfect for me! Waiter said, we can't do that. He directed to get to the full menu pappardelle meat ball & sauce. Well, the pappardelle noodles are 5/8" thick, not something an 89 yr old can chew & enjoy. Why he wouldn't allow her to have the spaghetti noodles, like the kids pasta, was beyond me. Really disappointing experience, waiter wanted to sell the tab!!! Not good customer service! Luckily he went on break & another server came to our table & made things right! Why he was only concerned about ringing up the tab is beyond me. Food is fresh & tasty. This was my first time coming to Basta and wow I'm impressed. First of all, huge shout out to Josh who was our incredible server. He had great recommendations and everything was timed perfectly. Speaking of perfect...our steak was cooked to perfection...seared on the outside and pink on the inside just like you would find in Florence. Pasta made in house and again...perfection. Al dente and delicious with big slices of garlic. We got the mussels to start along with the octopus salad and everything was delicious. We chose a Super Tuscan wine to go along with our meal which was also an excellent choice. Coming from a critical Italian this place is the real deal...authentic and delicious. After looking at the menu again online. I wanted to write this review. We ordered a lot of food for 4 people and one thing in particular that I wanted to try the pizza with truffle sauce and porcini mushrooms. However after spending over $600. When I asked about the pizza why there were no truffle sauce or porcini mushrooms. The waiter told me that the pizza has no porcini or truffle sauce in the pizza. And was telling me no no that I miss read the menu only sausage. However It's literally in the menu! She could tell I was very confused and disappointed and she never once asked me if I want something else or to take it away or anything. After no one eat the pizza after two slices. So I'm just really upset and disappointed when they try tricking you. Also it was my birthday dinner not one person asked if we were celebrating anything. As classy as this place wants to be it missed a many marks. Pistachio dessert was amazing but everything else was pretty mediocre and not good. Steak was seared too hard. All the put is salt and olive oil. Looked like someone put it in the fryer outside was impossible to chew. Beef carpaccio was missing something. It was very bland and tasted like cold roast beef with some mustard. We got some cold cuts and cheese that was delicious but again probably not home made. Pasta was rubbery my kid didn't even eat it. Octopus salad was under seasoned. Unfortunately many restaurants do this. It's not my first time ordering food with false ingredients. But that is just lies and I'm really upset that a place will write truffles and porcini mushrooms and use brown mushroom and try and get away with it. Then charge you for prime ingredients. Thought this was a nice classy place. But it's far from it. Also we waited 50 minutes for a table. The customer service is not good. read more
