I am so glad that I had my first taste of Cambodian cuisine at Battambang in Oakland. Wow, a Texas boy feasting on Crab Fried Rice in the Bay! Who would have thunk it? On a quiet Saturday afternoon, my girlfriend and I saw this place on Yelp and decided to take that culinary adventure. Cozy and communal, this place felt very intimate to the point that we had a full-blown conversation with the owner, who was the nicest guy ever. He shared a little bit about his memories of Cambodia as well as gave us time to check out a book of photographs showing the bike life of Cambodia. As for the food, we had the kebab, crab fried rice, curry, and stuffed chicken wings. The food was well-seasoned and smooth with the sauces and the flavors; everything was hot and fresh, no microwave or reheating. The curry and fried rice were standard; however, the stuffed chicken wings were packed with noodles and other ingredients that I cannot identify due to my limited foodie language. Trust, just because I can't name it does not mean that you should not order it. Stuff your tummy with those chicken wings. If you have never had Cambodian food, then come here. First time trying Cambodian food, at least from a restaurant. Came with some coworkers and one is an Americanized Cambodian with immigrant parents. So, he spoke the language with our sweet server, who reminded me of some of my own aunties. I didn't do any of the ordering, I just went for the ride. A ride I would repeat again for sure. Smoked Eggplant Dish ($15/5*) Holy smokes (pun intended) was this awesome. Peeled eggplant was kinda mushed up and cut but you could still make out the actual vegetable. Definitely not pureed like some Mediterranean dishes. I love eggplant in most forms, so the texture did not phase me at all. But small bits of ground pork and chopped shrimp fill each bite which gives it substantial meatiness and umami. Then a tangy lime dressing just ties it all together. I'd get this every time I come here. Appetizer Combo ($18/4*) So this had 3 components on the plate. Lemme try and break it down. Rice Crepe: Seemed more like an omelet than a crepe to me. Quite thin and stuffed with bean sprouts and maybe some green onions. Pretty plain so the lime/fish sauce condiment was pretty mandatory. Stuffed Chicken Wing: I had no clue you could stuff a chicken wing. The skill and work it must take to debone that tiny chicken part, wooo heee. The chicken itself had a great grill marinated flavor. The filling was like an Asian chicken meatloaf. Kinda dry but pretty tasty. Probably ginger and lemongrass went into it. Great ride cuz I've never had anything like it. Came with 2 types of rolls, 1 fried which looked and tasted exactly like Lumpia. And 1 fresh which looked like a Vietnamese Spring roll. Both good and again were dipped in that accompanying sauce. Beef Skewers ($13/2.5*) This was the only miss for me. Sure, the beef had a nice South East Asian marinade. But it was just too well done for me that it came off as tough and dry. I guess not so much a knock on the dish itself, as I'm sure this is how it is always done in the native land. But my American preference was just not digging it. I did try a full skewer though. Trout ($16/4*) Can trout be found in this native land? Can someone Google it for me and get back to me. Lol. But I love trout so I was intrigued. Nice boneless butterflied trout came perfectly pan fried. Crisp skin and tender flesh, flawless. It was topped with yet another lime-y sauce, so that flavor profile was being repeated throughout our dish selections. It wasn't bad, just repetitive, kinda wished it were another sauce. Crab Fried Rice ($13/4*) Great fried Rice with a decent wok hei. The crab was really shredded though, so kinda hard to discern. The crab flavor was there though, so much props. With some cold Singha Lagers, this was an awesome end-of-week meal with some coworkers. Glad I was finally able to try some Cambodian dishes and even more glad that I want to come back. I have to say that this restaurant is excellent in every way and has exceeded my party's expectations. I came here for a birthday dinner on a Thursday night and it was busy. My party asked for birthday candles since we brought cake and forgot them. A staff member happily serviced us with free birthday candles, a lighter, cake knife, small plates, and extra utensils, which were more than what we asked for. That is what exceptional dining experience is. As a pescatarian going vegan, I opted for vegan. This place is vegan friendly and they can eliminate animal paste or sauces and such for your appetizer or entree. I highly recommend this restaurant for any special occasions. I first tried Battambang a year ago and it has since become one of my favorite places in the East Bay. I hadn't had Cambodian food before this, and I was absolutely blown away by the combination of flavors. My favorite dish has to be #9 Troub Trung Kor (smoked eggplant with prawn & ground pork). It's the perfect balance of sweet, savory and tangy, all rounded out by the creaminess of the eggplant. The silky texture of the eggplant is contrasted nicely by bits of pork and shrimp, and it goes perfectly over rice. It's a dish I find myself craving VERY often. With excellent food, generous servings and friendly service, Battambang provides a thoroughly memorable dining experience. read more

Tried this place on a whim. I have never had Cambodian food before, so wasn't sure what to expect. They were closing pretty early for a Friday night, so we didn't get too much time to look through their extensive menu, but our waiter was very helpful and went through the popular dishes. I feel like Battambang has been around 30+ years in Oakland Chinatown although I'm not sure if it has been the same ownership the whole time. My Cambodian friends say it's pretty legit, and I like them too. I like the Cambodian dish which is the stuffed eggplant dish, forgot what it's called, plus their curries. I don't have much experience with Cambodian food but I was pretty happy with my visits here. Portions are big, prices are low, and service is very friendly. Food-wise, I personally prefer Nyum Bai and Phnom Penh Restaurant, but the convenient location right by the Bart and great price-to-portion ratio are big draws of Battambang Restaurant. Recommended: -94. Amok Trei ($15.95) plus white rice ($2) - delicious catfish in a lemongrass curry sauce, steamed in a banana leaf. This is much better than the version at Phnom Penh Restaurant. OK/good: 68. Bye chah sach kdam ($14.25) - Dungeness crab fried rice. Nothing too fancy but this was good. Really generous portion with lots of crab meat and not too oily. -70. Battambang noodles with chicken ($10.95) - pan-fried rice noodles in a tamarind sauce. Pretty good but not great, and the portion is generous. -66. Troub trung kor ($12.25) - smoked eggplant sauteed with prawn and ground pork in a sweet lime sauce. Definitely sweeter than expected, with a lot of sauce, and it didn't taste that smoky to me. I liked it a lot more after adding sambal. Not recommended: 32. Appetizer combo platter ($12.95) - this sampler platter had egg roll, imperial roll (with a gummy wrapper), stuffed chicken drumstick, and rice crepe. Back in my traveling days when I was in Venice, Italy, I recall how the best restaurants were those places that focused on quality and that were hidden with little if any loud or boisterous advertising. The restaurants that boasted the best quality were always the places with less than stellar quality. This is what can be said about Battambang located along the outskirts of Oakland Chinatown on Broadway St. As a long time Yelper mostly concentrated in the Greater Oakland Area, I've learned that to find new places, you need have connects with what I call stealth foodie locals who take the time to observe their surroundings and find little secrets like this gem so that a loud big mouth outspoken foodie like myself can write about places like this and act like I'm the know-it-all when truly, yours truly has only skimmed the surface of establishments like this. Embarrassed to say that I tried this place for the first time given that it's practically next to the office I've worked in for over 18 years, my colleague took me here and I must say that I was impressed. The interior is naturally lit, very comfortable and unobtrusive. The perfect vibe for eating and socializing. Very low key which is always a plus to me. Now to the food, I only had a couple of dishes and both were superb: For appetizers, we had stuffed chicken wings. 5/5 very delish!!! For the shared main course, crab fried rice. 5/5 off the charts fresh with plenty freshly cooked chunks of dungeness crab without all the work needed to get to the meat! Major yumminess factor here. I was fortunately introduced to Battambang years ago by a very discerning Cambodian friend from Cambodia. Not only is their food always fresh and delicious, the owner and her family are always so welcoming, attentive and kind. Among our many favorites are crab fried rice, amok trei steamed fish in banana leaf, lok lak beef appetizer, somlaw machou peng seafood hot and sour soup and all the curries. Plenty of vegetarian options too. In addition to coming here with local friends and colleagues, my wife and I bring all of our family and friends whenever they're visiting from out of town. It's one of the few places we can share a delicious meal and comfortably hear each other to catch up. My friend since moved to SF, but still comes here when craving an authentic home cooked meal. She's gone to many others, including a popular Michelin mentioned spot, but says Battambang is still THE best in the Bay Area for taste, pricing and service. With many family owned small businesses in downtown Oakland, especially Chinatown, still struggling after Covid shutdowns and drastically reduced foot traffic, I highly recommend supporting this minority woman owned restaurant for both dine in and take out. I can't remember the last time I had Cambodian food so I can't speak on how authentic Battambang is, but what I had was pretty darn good. After arriving in Oakland, I wanted to grab a quick dinner and decided to give them a call to place a takeout order. I ordered the crab salad ($21.95) and the battambang noodles with beef ($17.95). Way too much food for just me, but the leftover noodles made a great snack later on lol. I highly recommend both items. The noodles reminded me of a really good pad thai and the amount of dungeness crab on salad was generous. They've got a lunch special menu Monday-Friday, which is probably worth checking out if you're in the area during the workweek. Battambang, bada BOOM! For some reason, the name of this place just reminds me of that classic phrase. But was it a "bada BOOM" kind of experience for me? Welp... unfortunately, it wasn't. So, let me start off by saying that I've been spoiled by Phnom Penh. If you've experienced Phnom Penh before, then you already know what I'm talking about. I hate to instantly compare the two, but Phnom Penh's flavors are so potent and fragrant whereas Battambang takes a much more subtle approach. Some people may enjoy this, but I just felt like something was missing. I was in the area and decided to come here for dinner after running a few errands. When I arrived, the place was quite busy inside. I was greeted near the entrance as soon as I walked in and was sat and given a menu. I must say that their menu is extensive and the dishes that were listed definitely sounded authentic. I perused the menu for quite a while until I came to a final decision: the Trei Chlaing Chien Kroeurg. This dish consists of a pan fried catfish filet marinated in lemon grass and then simmered in sweet lime sauce. The description made my mouth water so I knew that I had to have it. I ordered this with a bowl of brown rice because I've gotta have my fatty carbs. The food took a little longer than expected to arrive, but when it did, I dug in immediately. The catfish filet was moist and tender, garnished with fresh parsley and red bell peppers, and served alongside fresh cut cucumbers and tomatoes. The presentation was perfect. The flavors, although subtle, were definitely apparent. But, it just seemed to the lack the Cambodian spices that I'm used to. It was just missing that wow factor for me. Maybe I just chose the wrong dish? I'm not really sure, but the fish was just "okay" in the end. Not bad, but nothing spectacular. Service was definitely minimal. I saw my server exactly 3 times during while I was there. Once to take my order, once when I was finished eating, and lastly when he brought the bill. He never came around to ask if I needed anything, never refilled my water glass, and took quite a while to finally bring my check. It was fairly busy but not busy enough to forget these simple tasks. In the end, Battambang wasn't a bada boom. It was more of an "it's aiight" sort of sitch'. Would I come back again? Definitely. I don't want to base how I feel on just one experience here and one entrée here because they seem to have so much more to offer. I'm planning to come back in the future to try something different. Maybe then, I'll find something that I will like and that will allow me to rate them more than just 3 stars. read more

We were visiting our son in Oakland after just returning from our trip to Vietnam and Cambodia. We fell in love with the food in Cambodia and wanted to let our son experience the flavors so we dropped into Battambang. Our meal was delicious and very authentic to what we had just experienced on our trip. Was this my first Cambodian restaurant? Yes. Was it delicious? Also yes. Portions were HUGE, so much so that we actually moved to another table to fit everything (more our gluttony than anything). Crab fried rice and Battambang noodles were definitely good but the standouts by far were the stuffed chicken wings and eggplant. The eggplant was SO good, some tang from the lime but still sweet and tons of savoriness from all the meat. I'd go back just to bathe in the sauce. Ugh why is Cambodian food not more widespread in America? It's so good! Happy I now know that Battambang is here to add to the amazing range of food in Oakland. The menu was a little overwhelming - so many things looked good. The bf and I try to keep our meat intake low, and there were lots of yummy, meatless options on the menu. After a few minutes of indecision, we went with a red tofu vegetable curry (the 48) and a fried rice with egg and crab (the 68, yes I know, not meatless - but looked too good). Sorry I don't remember their actual names! Both dishes were delicious. I particularly loved the curry, which had bamboo, mushroom, pineapple, and other goodies. At first I thought the pineapple wouldn't go well, but it really added something. The rice dish was simple but also very good. These dishes together cost about $30 with tax and tip, standard around these parts. Service was a lil slow but the people who work here seem very sweet and genuine, so I didn't mind. They were also very responsive if flagged down, so I think they were just busy and needed little reminders. On Broadway in a busy part of downtown. I would walk from the office if you work nearby or consider taking bus or Bart, which are both nearby. Parking downtown just sucks. Also when you get here, know it's a little tucked back from the street. We accidentally walked right past it and almost went into the wrong restaurant, which would have been v sad because we loved our dinner here. Really enjoyed my dinner here last week. Ordered the imperial rolls to start, they were nicely rolled and flavorful even without the sauce. I got the beef skewers, with pickled veggies, my friend tried the creamy catfish dish. We ordered a pot of rice for the table and some wine. Food was very versatile and flavorful. I could easily taste how Cambodian food differs from other Asian cuisines that I also enjoy. Overall, really nice experience, restaurant is nicely decorated, gets a lot of natural light and the bathrooms were clean. Wow...I have lived walking distance from this place for years and somehow today is my first time trying the amok (catfish) and the sticky eggplant with pork and shrimp. The catfish is deliciously steamed with lemongrass really shining through. It is steamed and tastes amazing with the lime/lemon. Was on social media and I was asking for some recommendations for some where to eat. A friend suggested I try out Battambang Cambodian Restaurants in downtown Oakland. I asked if they had any favorites or what should i get so that suggested I try the Stuffed Chicken Wings and Crab Fried Rice both are favorites of people who frequently come to the restaurant. So of course I had to try it out. The Stuffed Chicken Wings - were two chicken stuffed with onions, bean stock, peanuts and pork. The chicken was very tender not overly cooked & seasoned very well. Nice size wings which you can eat alone or enough to share with at least two people. 4 out of 5 Crab Fried Rice - didnt have alot of vegetables which is a stable in most fried rice but id have to say you didn't need it.. the Eggs, green onions along with the nice tender crab meat & rice was everything you could want. It wasn't that busy, with only 2 other tables but there were a couple of groups of people coming in and out of the restaurant to pick up their to-go orders. The menu is massive but I think it can be a hit or miss depending on what you order. I ordered the Vegetarian Cambodian Crepe, and my partner got the beef sticks with rice and a small salad. I also like how honest the restaurant is and how they care about quality because I came here one time and I wanted to order mango sticky rice since I had it before and the worker told me that they don't have it and I was really disappointed, but when I got to the restaurant to pick up my order, the worker mentioned that the reason why they don't have mango sticky rice is because mango is not in season so they don't want to serve it unless the mango is good or else the mango sticky rice wouldn't taste good.
