I got a t-shirt too that I wore for years until it was ultimately retired. I actually wrote a Yelp review about it that I deleted. In it, I said "The smell of the waffle cones filled the place with smiles and enjoyment. I knew I wanted a waffle cone." What a terrible critic. He will never be Yelp Elite. I haven't been back to Hey Mikey's since then, just because I haven't really been back to Galveston in some time, but my memories of the unique ice cream flavors and toppings remained. Heading back to Galveston for a cruise, I wanted to try and make a stop there again for nostalgia's sake. Instead of heading to the Airbnb, my girlfriend and I drove straight to Hey Mikey's as our first stop in Galveston. We got there around 8:45 pm, which was 15 minutes before they closed (our fault). This is no diss to Hey Mikey's, but almost everything else on The Strand on a Thursday night closes way too early, so it felt like everyone was at Hey Mikey's. The line was extensive in front of us and behind us even after it closed. After waiting through the line for quite some time, I got a waffle cone with their cereal milk ice cream, which had Fruity Pebbles in it, topped with Lucky Charms. They gave it to me with a temperature-changing plastic spoon that turned from yellow to purple when cold. The ice cream was sensational. What an incredible flavor. The only downside was the waffle cone being a little stale, but I fault that to it being a waffle cone ordered right at closing time. The next night, I returned with my cousins and ordered a cup of cereal milk ice cream with Cocoa Puffs as the topping instead. Fantastic stuff. Once again, being there too close to closing meant we had to wait, and we didn't get our ice cream until 9:30, a full 30 minutes after they closed. It was nice that they still served us though! One thing I did notice, which I don't know if it's a normal thing, is that since Hey Mikey's is the only ice cream shop open past 8 o'clock on most weeknights, they seem to get a lot of foot traffic after that time. Their menu is pretty large in its offerings. If it were just scoops of ice cream, the line would move fast, but so many people were ordering shakes, which are a lot more labor-intensive and removed a staff member from their assembly line to focus on the shake. I don't have any advice on how they could easily move the line in the later hours of the night, but man, those kids are working their butts off for everyone to get their late-night sweet treat. Hey Mikey's, you are just as good as I remember.

There a few tables inside the establishment and it was quite packed with a line, however service went pretty fast. From the traditional chocolate and vanilla to Americas colors, and Salted Carmel, lots to choose from shakes, bowls and a banana split. I had the double scoop Nutter Butter and Salted Carmel and the misses had a Brownie Sundae. If you're in Galveston, check it out. If you're a fan of cooling off inside, you can do that to to enjoy the ambiance.

From display case after display case filled with various chocolates and candies, to bins overflowing with colorful saltwater taffy, and machines busy making fresh popcorn and warm roasted nuts there's no shortage of sweet treats. You can stop by the classic soda fountain, or pick up something vintage ice cream counter, and even find a spot to pick up tea or coffee, this gem truly has it all. I've been visiting since I was a little girl, and coming back reminded me exactly why it's such a staple on the Strand. This place has been part of Galveston for generations, and it still delivers that same magic. It's always busy, always full of energy, and there's truly something here for everyone. The candy shop alone is worth the stop--rows of old-fashioned sweets, fresh confections, and that nostalgic atmosphere you just don't find anymore. The divinity is divine, and the ice cream is just as good as I remembered. I had the lemon custard (so good!), my brother got a scoop of chocolate on a cone, and my friend ordered cinnamon. My mom insisted she didn't want anything...until she tried my friend's cinnamon. She loved it so much she immediately went and got her own, which says everything. And for $5 a scoop, two could easily share. This is one of those must-stop places when you're on the Island. Whether you're there for the ice cream, the candy, or just the experience, it never disappoints. A+.

It felt kind of cluttered. I expect they must have a patio setup on nicer days, but on this day all that equipment was taking up all the space right inside the front entrance. I'm not much on sweets. I can be talked into an interesting cookie, but this was not the place I expected and I don't think they sold cookies or interesting milk flavors from what I could tell. They do sell sketchy looking hot dogs and pizza. I'm not sure who orders that. It seems like they specialize in ice cream. I tried one flavor and it was pretty sweet for me. I'm not much on sweets so that's not hard to do for me. I stood around letting my wife pick her flavor. I would have waited outside given how cramped the space felt, but it was pouring rain. My wife mentioned the place has artwork and stuff. I didn't see that and didn't know to expect it. I also heard there is a wine bar somewhere on the premise. I may have to come back and give that a try.
