My husband and I have been coming here for a few years, and we've never had a remarkable customer service experience. This review is 2 stars ONLY because the quality of the coffee has always been high, but we had a 0-star experience with the cashier today and walked out without purchasing anything. I don't know what had her in such a sour mood, but this woman with chin-length black hair was very curt and rude from the beginning of our interaction. Didn't return our "hello/good morning", which I would expect if it was busy, but we were the only ones waiting to order. When my husband asked for a cold brew, she snapped "I don't have cold brew. I can make an iced americano" without looking up from the POS screen. He said that was fine and gave her my drink order next (an iced vanilla latte). When she read the order back, she said "iced vanilla nutmeg latte" and I tried to correct her. The tone with which she said "vanilla NUTMEG. We don't have vanilla. The nutmeg is IN IT already. I can't make a plain vanilla latte." was so shocking that I was second-guessing myself--do vanilla lattes not exist? Had I not been ordering them for years at Bear Coast? How did I not notice that they always had nutmeg in them?? My husband dragged me out so that neither of us would be tempted to match her energy. What was already an off morning took a significant turn for the worse with that negative interaction, and it's been bothering us enough for the last hour that I felt compelled to write a review. If you're reading this, ma'am, I really hope your day turns around! I would hate for Bear Coast to lose any more business or long-time customers because of the negativity. read more

The coffee was good. The service was underwhelming. It felt like the staff was part of a clique and I wasn't. To make matters worse, the SUGGESTED tips from the checkout terminal were 20, 22, and 25%. Really?! There was a time when a 15% tip meant someone hustled and was really kind which resulted in great service. In this case, I stood in line to order my own coffee and had to pick it up when someone finished making it. And you EXPECT 20% or more for a tip. NOPE. read more

January 2019 Glad to announce that all is back to normal, every visit from December thru present have been pleasant and have not experience any problems. We love their warm MORNING CITRUS (just a tip, first have your Hot lattes prior to diving into your Morning Citrus bc the citrus changes the palate taste to the latte. It may not be a problem fir you but it totally changes mine just a heads up.) They only serve their Breakfast Burritos on Weekends. They use to offer them everyday of the week until a few weeks ago. On top of all this, I get an avocado nubby on my feta and egg sandwich, that was just the last draw of the day, we didn't even stay for hot lattes. The first few days it was awesome everything was excellent and no problems at all. It all started coming down shift after this past Sunday, we came in and the barista was not pleasant at all she looked tired and no kind of welcoming vives at all. No worries we left it alone and carried on with our day. They were too busy, which is a good hung for business, but we couldn't even get ahold of someone. So we kust I hope that they pick up and continue to what we love them for. Proof that their house made Almond Milk is frothy and oh so yummy! It's hard to find an almond milk with this consistency, unless it's filled with nasty undesirable gums to create that froth. Not this one, this is house made great quality and yum in a cup good! I highly recommend you adventure and try their White sesame seed croissant with cheese and mustard on the inside (delicate taste not over powering) whole-wheat. It's very fresh and just perfect for an afternoon snack! The customer service is on point, the atmosphere is lively and the area is quaint and just a cool place to enjoy the perfect latte! You can also walk across the street and sit at the Plaza's concrete benches. They are always rocking and seating is VERY limited so there is an option. Plus the plaza also has a cute historic little water feature on the entrance (left side of bear coast across parking. Also on Saturdays, the plaza hosts the Daba Point Farmers Market so there is limited parking spaces available up front, but in the back of the building they have plenty. read more

On a scenic drive down Coast Hwy, we found ourselves in need of a good iced coffee. And we're so glad we found Bear Coast. I asked a really authentically friendly guy working the register what he'd recommend and he pointed to their house-made syrups (specialty drinks). We tried the Vanilla Nutmeg Latte and the Horchata Latte, both iced. Similar flavor profiles with the Horchata being just a touch stronger, super smooth espresso, absolutely loved them both. We also tried the pistachio almond croissant and were oooohing and aaaaahing - croissants are always a gamble...will they be dry?...not one bit on these - so good! Great outdoor area on a nice plaza - on Friday morning, people were visiting and working on laptops. We liked it so much we came back the next morning on our way back up Coast Hwy - the Saturday crowd definitely has the baristas hustling but it was still a great experience and we got to take our drip coffees (great complex flavor profile!) and walk around the farmer's market. This place is awesome! The coffee is top-notch--I love their Ethiopian and Colombian single origins. Their drip coffees taste as good as other places' pour-overs. My wife said her latte was one of the best she's ever had. The bliss balls and pastries were all tasty and fresh-baked, and next time I'm going to try one of the breakfast sandwiches. We loved the vibe--there was a line out the door but the baristas and friendly people working the register kept people moving through quickly. Bear coast is awesome - perfect spot for a post surf cup of coffee and a blueberry muffin. The coffee here is excellent, and the baked goods are seriously above my expectations from a standard coffee shop.... but for me the breakfast options aren't great. Something about the breakfast sandwich just doesn't work - it's loaded with pesto and greens, tons of bread, not much egg and no meat. I've had the breakfast burrito in the past and it's nothing to write home about. To end on a positive note, they make a great latte and again their baked goods are awesome! My wife and I came here for the first time after a long ride up to Dana point. We were excited to try a new coffee shop and had previously heard good things about their coffee. I ordered an iced v latte with whole milk and the wife ordered another flavored latte with whole milk, iced. In addition we ordered the breakfast burrito. First things first the latte's were god awful, they both tasted like 98% milk and 2% tart/burnt espresso. I was going to simply ask them to remake mine but I tried my wife's and her's tasted the exact same. We're not sure if it was the barista on shift or what but it was only the second time in my life that I've taken 2 sips of a drink and thrown it out. I didn't attempt to return it as if they were 0/2 I'd expect then to be 0/3. Next the breakfast burrito we got was delicious. Unfortunately it was so delicious that I remembered the flavors from a food truck I know, called Rooster, which is one of my favorites in LA and do they prepare their burritos for coffee shops I frequent. That said, coffee shops always advertise when they serve Rooster burrito's this place seemed to be passing it off as their own which seemed a bit odd and backward to me, no where on the menu did it say that their burritos are pre-packaged by Rooster. It seems a bit sneaky to me that they are not a advertising this. All of that said it was my first time so maybe I'll give them another chance for coffee down the line we'll see. read more

I feel bad, but I gotta day it. Am I the only one who thinks this place's espresso is nasty? Ok, so local Laguna girl here who loves coffee and discovering the next best coffee shop (especially because the ones in Laguna Beach are meh). Celine is the name, almond milk latte is my game, and always on the hunt for the best. I originally tried Bear Coast in San Clemente a few months ago. I got an iced almond milk latte..which btw $1.25 for almond milk?! But I guess they make their own in house? So that's cool. Anyway, at that time I thought the latte was not very good. Bitter, almost sour or burnt taste? I couldn't quite figure it out. Even the color is like a very warm caramel color..much more yellowy brown in comparison to other places. But then my boyfriend and I decided to give it another shot since we saw there was the location in Dana Point. Well, I chickened out and got an iced almond milk chai. Very good. But this morning after yoga I decided I was gonna try the espresso again, thinking it might have been a fluke at the SC location. Nope. Today I got an iced almond milk dirty chai latte. It has that same soury taste, so yes, it is their espresso. I'm sad to leave this review because I like the place. The employees are nice and the vibe is good. The best coffee in South OC by far is still Portola for me. Soo good. Their espresso just works so well with almond milk, whether having it hot or iced. And the reason we even tried this place in the first place is because a barista at Portola told my boyfriend Bear Coast was his fave. Maybe their regular coffee roasts are better, but whatever they're doing for espresso is just not working for my taste buds. The only saving grace for me is their chai. Whatever brand of chai concentrate they have is yummy. And that's the reason I'll come back to Bear Coast every once in awhile. I went in and ordered a drink. While I was waiting for my drink, a customer came in with a massive dog who began to howl like a wolf... insanely loud. The worker making my drink started howling back at the dog and the dog kept jumping up on the counter excited to see the worker and is putting his paws all over the food on the counter. Both were howling so incredibly loud at each other. Obviously, this customer is a regular as this seemed to be a normal routine with everyone. The worker making my drink then stops making my drink, gets a piece of bacon, comes from around the counter, and feeds the dog the bacon all the while the dog is licking his hands. He then pets the dog and fur is flying everywhere. The worker then goes back behind the counter, DOESNT WASH HIS HANDS, and finishes making my drink. It was the most appalling food safety scene I'd ever witnessed. NEVER COMING BACK. WARNING: if you come in the morning, there's a good chance dog fur or saliva is somehow in your drink. read more

Was excited to try a new local spot but was turned off after waiting 20 minutes for our order-which wouldn't usually bother me for local spots but after seeing other people come and go that came after us, yes I was annoyed. One of the employees had her friends come to visit, and they of course got their drinks right away before us. So that was definitely annoying and of course her friends distracted her from doing her job and as a result my husbands coffee was sitting there (no one called his name) so it was not warm anymore and they forgot about my drink, the easiest drink (cold brew). I asked for a splash a oat milk 3 times but the girl was too busy talking to her friends she didn't hear me, and then she has the audacity to give me a sarcastic "thank you" because I didn't say thank you when she gave me my drink-she should step outside to hang with her friends and maybe someone should be taking care of paying customers.
