Seeing Beard Papa in the Marukai Pacific Square Food Court still got me excited like a little kid seeing Mickey at Disneyland. My wife was like, "Calm down. After dinner, honey." Once you have the cash somehow, you're in for some nice cream puffs. I usually grab a few from here before gatherings, as I'm always excited to share these with friends and loved ones. It's located inside Tokyo Central, which used to be Marukai. I'm so glad that these shops inside remained unchanged with the new building name. There's different pricing based on which kind, the size, and quantity. I don't remember the exact prices, but they sell them by the unit, half-dozen, or dozen. I don't believe you save much (if any) by purchasing more. Obviously, the bigger ones cost more. Same goes for the fancier one(s) besides 'original'. And once you order, the person begins to fill each one up just before you get them. That way, you know the cream puffs aren't sitting that way for long. It's close to $10 for a half dozen of these but so worth it. It's the custard that makes it so good. Not too sweet which I think ruins other cream puffs. This custard is also "light" in a sense. it's a hit or miss , last 3 times was good no burnt puff if the the old man was making it , all is okay , then today .. WTH ? this young female made it and she gave us all burnt bread puff . Sometimes I find myself craving Beard Papa's and other times my dad is scolding me for spending nearly $2.00 for a tiny pastry dessert. The first time I ever had Beard Papa cream puffs were back in the day like 10 years ago when my friend brought them over from New York City. Even though they were smashed in her carry-on luggage from the flight from NYC to L.A., the cream puffs still tasted heavenly. Years later, I am so glad that there is a Beard Papa inside the Marukai market, and I can get fresh cream puffs made to order. It was the perfect dessert after having a New Year's Eve brunch of dim sum with my parents at Sea Empress. You can get the plain cream puffs filled with vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, or green tea filling. Or you can get them inside the fancy eclair puffs, which are the same puffs but with a glaze on top. I think the glazes come in the same flavors, too. My favorite flavor is still the original cream. It is SOOOO GOOOD!!! Rich and creamy and perfectly sweetened, you can see the specks of real vanilla bean throughout the custard. My bf noted that the puffs we bought were fresh out of the oven, and they didn't fill them until we ordered them, so the puffs stayed nice and crispy. Sometimes pre-filled puffs tend to get a bit soggy, but ours remained light and airy... even after the 30-minute drive to my parents' place, where we gobbled them up upon arrival. Trying to not get distracted from my errands was a challenge so I quickly made a pit stop at Beard Papa's in Gardena. It may not seem like such a big deal if you're not fond of cream puffs, but what makes this place unique is that they fill the puffs with cream as you order. You just ask for the cream puff you want, as in you can choose the one topped with pink, white, or milk chocolate, and then you ask for either the vanilla, chocolate, or green tea filling. Perfect! I purchased one with green tea and the other with chocolate filling--both were perfectly puffy and slightly flaky. However...Yes, I do have a however when it comes to the flavor. The green tea filling was perhaps too mild for me as I could barely taste it. I usually love flavors that make a STRONG statement, and I think the green tea was hardly detectable. But if you're one of those people who prefer mild flavors and aren't a fan of strong tea, then this might be a good choice for you! I ordered the original cream puffs. You may think that a French bakery would have the best cream puffs, but you would be wrong. Because Beard Papas is by far the best cream puff I have ever had. In the past, I had cream puffs with either a whipped cream filling or a very eggy custard. Beard Papa's cream is very smooth and creamy and has an authentic vanilla flavor - none of that vanilla extract but pure vanilla bean as you can see the flecks of vanilla bean in the cream. The cream is definitely my favorite part of the cream puff but I also loved how the breading of the cream puff was very crispy and tasted fresh. I would definitely come here again and again. However, I did want to note that my sister also got the same cream puff as me but had a different experience. She said the breading of the cream puff tasted stale and soggy. I guess your experience is highly dependent on when you come and if you get a left over cream puff or one straight out of the oven. Since all the cream puffs are displayed in front of a glass pane next to the cashier, I would recommend looking at the cream puffs to see which one looks best and pointing at the cream puff that you want to the cashier. Trust me, it will be worth it. When you get a fresh cream puff, it's truly the best thing ever. I'm not kidding. This is seriously the best cream puff I've ever had. Note: This place is located inside a supermarket and there were other restaurants located inside the supermarket, so you could have lunch and desert at the same place. Even though I came literally 15 minutes before closing because I wanted cream puffs and I was in the area, they still tasted warm, crispy, and of course the cream was delicious. Unlike what some of the tips say, you can actually use your credit card as long as you go over $5 which for me was pretty easy when you want one of each and more to bring home! The good thing about the cream puffs here is that you get one big one instead of a bunch of small ones (though they have the option for that too I think). There was no line when I arrived, and there were two girls working. However, one of them was a new trainee and was being taught how to work the register, so things moved pretty slowly. It took me 10 minutes to get my cream puffs. I ordered the 6 piece box with 4 originals and 2 green tea flavored cream puffs. I was beyond excited to finally see what these Beard Papa's cream puffs were all about. WOO BEARD PAPAS! I took my first bite, and the cream inside was absolutely delicious. The green tea was spot on. However, the exterior bread didn't taste fresh and was quite stale. Almost like cardboard. While the green tea was amazing, I couldn't say the same for the vanilla. The taste itself was great, but the vanilla cream puffs were only halfway filled! Not just one, but all. I've noticed this was another complaint on many reviews, but I don't understand why my green tea cream puffs were perfectly filled, but the vanilla ones were not.. Doesn't make sense that they were running out of filling either since I went around noon.. It's been quite a while since i had a Beard Papa cream puff, these were all the rage maybe what 10 years ago? I forgot when they migrated over from Japan, but I think they are still associated with Marukai, and now Tokyo Central. As a gift, I was pleasantly surprised that these were the mini size cream puffs. Peeking inside the bag were 3 flavors, matcha (powdered tea), traditional with confectioners sugar, and mocha, with a powdered cocoa on top. Perfect size and went well with my soy latte lol. The matcha with the matcha powder on top and so obviously in the cream, that dark green color cream lol, was much more an adult flavor. It had very little sweetness, so kids wouldn't like it much i dont think. The traditional in this mini size was very refreshing and tasty, just a crisp bite of crust with the pudding like cream which is so good, and this is what made them famous. The third was again, sort of on the less sweet side, and had cocoa powder on top and mixed in the cream, but i can see kids trying this one. They might not like it or they might like it, i think it'll be 50/50 lol. But overall, brought back good memories. If you never tried, start with the normal traditional ones first, then venture out to these other flavors. Get a nice ichibancha shizuoka sencha (green tea leaves) and make some boiling water. Pour the water in a mug, let it sit a few seconds then pour that water into your tea pot with tea, let that sit 2-3 min that should be the perfect temperature for making a first picked tea, perfectly. Enjoy by pouring a little in each cup, going to cup to cup till the tea pot is empty. That ensures that everyone gets a balanced flavor of tea. But yes, go try those cream puffs, yummy lol. read more

Although beard Papa has a reputation of being a delicious sweet light and fluffy dessert, I was very disappointed when I was craving something of that nature. Not only did they have odd flavors but even something basic like strawberry flavored was disappointing because the strawberry was so thickly coated on the cream puff it literally became a weapon. The inside cream was very underwhelming. But the most disappointing thing was the price for a regular size cream puff they're charging over $3 and for the small nugget size bite is a $1.25. It's safe to say that I will not be returning ever again because for that price it's ridiculous. You're better off going into the market and looking for a custard. read more

These creme puffs are absolutely the best I have ever had! The outside is nice and crispy and the cold creme inside adds just the right amount of sweetness, they stuff the puffs when you buy them. The supermarket has a food court of sorts, with a couple of vendors and a nice sitting area. We ended up getting three of original cream puffs and three chocolate dipped cream puffs. Sadly they had run out of the cream flavor of the day, chocolate. But it didn't matter the pastries were superb! Everything is made fresh daily, which makes the pastries just plain amazing! This Beard Papas has nice thick chocolate, vanilla and strawberry cream in their cream puffs. However, as mentioned in several reviews, the pastry shell was a little stale. My favorite Beard Papas so far is still the Sawtelle location. This one is located in the Marukai food court and is CASH only. If you're in the South Bay, this is the closest Beard Papas, so if you need a fix, it'll do. My kids didn't seem to mind the slightly stale pastry and neither did my sweet teef. read more
