Unless I have been misinformed by the staff about their offering, they do not use custard. The "cream" they use tastes like whipped cream and the after taste is disgusting. The Beard Papa's I know is in the Japanese or French veine and use real chocolate or vanilla custard. Custard. It's thick, sweet, cold and marries with the puff crust perfectly. When did this franchise/ brand stop caring? Bring back the real custard and stop dipping the puff in cheap chocolate and call it a chocolate puff when it should be filled with delicious chocolate custard. read more

The best cream puffs in the US, period! Tried different flavors, their raspberry, cookies and cream, chocolate eclairs and the creme brulee. All of them are excellent but of course I have favorites: the creme brulee and the raspberry. I'm a huge fan of Beard Papa's cream puffs. My first experience with these fluffy little pieces of heaven was in Hawaii, then I was thrilled to find that a San Francisco location opened while I was living there. Now in LA, I often stop by the Sawtelle location when I need a puff. But I have to say, visiting this location consistently makes me miss the other Beard Papa experiences I've had in my life. First of all, there's something I don't like about the fact that they sell a bunch of other bakery goods in addition to their famous cream puffs. I know it doesn't make sense, but I just like knowing that a place is dedicated to being really good at their specialty item. Although the cream puffs are filled on the spot like at the other locations, the pastry part always tastes a bit less fresh than the other locations, too. Don't get me wrong - I still love these cream puffs, they still hit the spot. But they don't give me that moment of bliss in the same way that the other locations do. Finally, I was very unimpressed with the service I experienced on my last visit to this location. The lady behind the counter was super unfriendly and looked like she was going to kill me when I asked which cream puff was the vanilla and which was the strawberry. i'm sorry, lady - they look exactly the same! She almost threw them at me as I was paying... doesn't she know how delicate these little cream puffs are? Uncool. After having lunch with a small Yelp Crew at Curry House, my overindulgent can't get enough food in my mouth self decided to hit up Beard Papa for some dessert. I figured that a cream puff or two would do the trick and that these bad boys would have me ready for my afternoon siesta. Now was it everything I had hoped it would be? Not really, but it did get the job done and leave me with a smile on my face so kudos to them for that. I guess I am a bit spoiled after having tasted the cream puffs at Chantilly so please take that into account when reading my review. Now for those of you who are unfamiliar with Beard Papa, their giant choux pastry puffs are filled to order and pretty damn good. They come in several flavors and ordering is quite simple. All you have to do is choose your puff, pick a filling, and voila its ready to go. Not to mention service is top notch as they even let you sample the various creams before making your choice. Today I went with the cookie crust and filled it with their signature vanilla cream. Their cream filling was not what I was expecting and has a similar consistency to pudding. I would have prefered a more whipped version of the cream, sort of like a mouse, but the pudding like cream was delicious nonetheless. I do have to say that Beard Papa does a wonderful job in baking their choux pastry puffs. They are very light, airy, and make for the perfect vessel to deliver their signature vanilla cream. Went today 7/15 around 5pm and had to deal with the rudest staff ever. One of the guys literally started laughing because a lady asked how the ordering system worked which is a very normal question. She was in there for the buy 5 get 1 free deal and he totally dismissed her and treated her as if she was very dumb. It's hard to explain on here but his energy was very negative and it was some of the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Partially because everyone seems to love Beard Papa's so much, partially because I was hoping I was wrong. I am shocked and surprised by how much I disliked the cream puff I got last Friday. I mean, I love cream puffs, I have a sugar tooth approximately the size of Mt Rushmore, what could go wrong? The puff was flimsy and too crunchy and the cream was too whipped-cream-ish (I hate the stuff) and bland. Also, they have a new pumpkin flavored puff out for fall. Sounds good theoretically, but stay away! Again, I'm shocked and surprised. I love pumpkins and all things fall, and I couldn't finish my half of the pumpkin puff. It was so depressing! Beard Papa's has been an addiction ever since I wandered into this little shop out of curiosity several years ago. I was intrigued by the snowy bearded, pipe smoking, beanie wearing old man that adorned the windows adjacent to Nijiya. Little did I know that this very dwarf looking man would serve such luscious treats and even appear in Disney's "Wreck it Ralph" years later. My favorite cream puff is still the original--a standard choux pastry filled with Barvarian cream with a light sprinkle of powdered sugar. It is just sweet enough to satisfy a sweet tooth, but not at all cloying or heavy. When I'm feeling particularly indulgent, I may opt for a chocolate covered shell. Of course they have other flavors like strawberry, chocolate, and sometimes other seasonal delicacies like dulce de leche and green tea and various shells to choose from, but I always find the original to be the best. For large orders, call in advance. They usually ask for a couple hours notice, though this past Sunday I was delighted when they had my order ready in less than an hour. Plus they helped us carry it to the car! Parking spaces in front of the bakery have a 20 minute limit. Warning: getting into and out of this parking lot can be very tricky. Be on guard for wild drivers--you are in the parking lot of an Asian market after all. read more

What's not to love about a small puff pastry with yummy flavorful custard filling. Truth be told one is never enough. My favorite filling is the green tea, which is sadly only available Monday & Tuesday. The original is my second favorite and available all week long. What I love about this location is the hours and the service. It's open till 10:00 p.m. daily and even though the line is out the door you'll be enjoying a yummy cream puff in less than 5 mins. Beard Papas are filled to the brim with cream. Beard Papas are fairly inexpensive. Beard Papas are tasty. But Beard Papas did not my mind blow. Tip taken from Jess P.: find the "point of injection" and start your chomping there. Makes it much much easier to enjoy your Beard Papa without having the delightful cream goodness within come spilling out the sides all over your hands and running down your forearms. I don't know if this chain was created in Japan, the U.S. or on another galaxy, but their cream puffs and eclairs are truly magnificent, so good that they're probably bordering the illegal. The pastries are filled with orgasmic deliciousness to order. The flavors on my last visit were chololate, strawberry and vanilla. The shells are freshly baked with the exception of the eclairs. This is because the chocolate topping has been refrigerated adding extra delicious to the already wonderous. (I realize that I'm using a good many superlative adjectives, but trust me when I say that they're justified). You can eat your creation there or have them boxed to go. When I first saw Beard Papa's face on that sign off Sawtelle, I wasn't sure what to think of him. At first I thought he was a bit suspect. He looked nice enough, but sometimes those genial-looking old bearded guys are actually child molesters. Maybe it was the way his eyes looked shifty whilst he smoked his pipe. And then I wondered what sort of car Beard Papa would drive, which would be a good indicator. If he was one of Those Crazy Dirty Old Guys Who Live in a Neighborhood Around Santa Monica, he probably drives an '82 Buick Skylark with the backseat filled up to the roof with old Diet Pepsi cans, Hemingway books and issues of "Jugs" from 1987. Thus, his cream puffs would be filled with nasty artificial fillers and....other nasty....stuff. But he also looks like Wilfred Brimley, which would mean that maybe he drives a Jeep Wagoneer with the wood side paneling. Because that's what Wilfred would drive. And if that was the case, then I figured his cream puffs would be wholesome and worth trying, because guys who drive Wagoneers named Wilfred Brimley are stand-up dudes who live in cozy log cabins in Montana. I went with the "Wilfred Brimley" assumption and walked in with my girlfriend. I was wrong. Beard Papa is neither of those guys. I assumed because everything was so fresh and clean (the ingredients and the interior), that the cream puffs might be sort of.....healthy? I know that sounds f'ing stupid since they're $#%@ CREAM PUFFS, but Beard Papa's pipe had been shotgunning me with those pastry fumes, so I wasn't thinking straight. No, Beard Papa is the crack dealer on the corner in Skid Row, and he drives an old camino with 20"s. His cream puffs are so addictive that you WANT MORE AND MORE UNTIL YOUR BODY CAN'T TAKE ANYMORE. You eat one, and then you're all, "WTF that's it? I need another one" And then you end up stabbing a passerby with a shiv made out of a plastic spoon and then take his wallet so you can get an extra few bucks to get another puff. read more

You walk in and there's a counter selling Beard Papas cream puffs and another selling cakes, coffee, and tea. You can buy cakes by the slice or full -- I recommend the Strawberry Shortcake, their most popular. Get the cream puffs by the box; it's the best deal. You can get them sprinkled with green tea or chocolate powder if you like. Now I wasn't the biggest fan of cream puffs (the American kind) until I was introduced to this place. I stereotyped the ordinary cream puff as super sweet and heavy, but BP is barely that. Light and slightly crunchy on the outside with a filling that's sweetened juuust right. I love it when you call me Beard Papa's. Delicious! I've tried the vanilla, chocolate and eclair. I'm interested to try the strawberry. (And I don't like green tea anything, so that's out of the running for me.) The cream puffs are delicate and gooey and.....comforting. A little bite of heaven. I'm kinda baffled by the hype that surrounds this place. The pastry isn't that special but I do lap up the custard filling like some crazed custard-monster. Otherwise, the pastry itself is a little too hard for my sensibilities. The addition of the mini-cream puffs is a great, cheaper alternative; of course, there's a greater custard to pastry ratio with this which is why I probably enjoy them more. And I die over the strawberry flavor, which my niece says tastes like a gooey strawberry shake. She's right. Hmmm, I never asked them if they sell the filling without the shell. I read about the Beard Papa's phenomenon earlier this year on the net, and how they were the best of the best (this was about the time the Hollywood/Highland location was opening). So earlier this summer, I was very pleasantly surprised when I saw my very own local branch as I was coming out of the Nijiya Market on Sawtelle. Would all the hype set the Puffs up for fall? Would they be flat and tasteless? I walked in and plunked down a buck and a half for one Vanilla Cream Puff. I equated it to ordering a plain cheese slice at a new pizza joint, to be able to taste just the basic essence and judge the establishment on how tasty the fundamentals they came make. It was divine --- the perfectly layered, crispy (yet soft), and textured dough and the perfect creamy consistency and flavor of the filling. The Puffs have lived up to all the hype, no question about it. And the girls who work the counter are so darn pleasant, too. I have since tried two other flavors --- Chocolate and Green Tea. Chocolate was not as good as the Vanilla, by far. Yesterday, they finally had Green Tea --- and I have to say --- I was as disappointed in that flavor as I was with the Chocolate. But that Vanilla --- it makes up for any shortcomings the other flavors may have. On just the Vanilla flavor alone --- Yum, Yum, Yum! read more

Very fresh cream puffs, about $2 each. They are on the smaller side, and the chocolate cream has a light dusting of chocolate powder. It is not topped with a chocolate glaze. Not incredible, but quite enjoyable, light, and not that sweet. The puff is not flaky enough to rank higher. Six puffs are $11, you won't feel like you are too indulgent, even when eating three of them. Good place to stop for quick sweet and coffee break. They don't have cream pitchers, just the little sealed cups of half and half. Saw only a young staff of two, keeping quite busy with the baking, taking orders, making coffee. 3.5 stars, rounded up. Uggghh!!! They have this strawberry shortcake with shaved coconut that is to die for!! Around $4 a slice or close to $40 for a round cake, either way I'll pay. It's light, not heavy at all and has a fresh taste that's not too sweet. Also, their cream puff with the strawberry filling is my favorite. Sadly they only offer this filling on the Sat & Sun - thank god for the freakin' weekends! From the odd fisherman they use for their logo, and the creamy goodness of the filling...yummyyy.... When was I introduced to this delectable delight? Several years ago I was unaware of this and then...doom...I would forever crave a cream puff. Since then I've introduced it to my family, and caved in to the demands of my sister to bring her to Beard Papa's, and to out of town visitors. I've even had to have it in NY, where unfortunately the cream puffs are made smaller! I still stick with the original vanilla flavor as the absolutely best. Very smooth and not overwhelming, and goes perfectly well with the puff. Next is the strawberry flavor, because they use real strawberries! Caramel is also quite good, a bit sweeter but if that's what you like...well get the caramel. Chocolate and green tea are tasty, but I don't like the powdery texture of the cream. Sometimes the puffs are fresh, sometimes not, but still pretty good if not. Part of the fascination with these is the way they do it right in front of you. They have these machines that just pump the cream into the puffs. Kinda fun to watch if its your first time ever. This place has excellent, speedy service. I ordered a dozen puffs to bring onto a small movie set, and the cast/crew devoured the box within minutes. I would recommend BP cream puffs to buy friendships. It works for me! I heard that the Mousse Fantasy part of the store used to be very popular, but I never see anyone buying pastries there anymore. Most people seem to be opting for the cream puffs. The only downside is that I've tried to come here in the morning to pick up some snacks for the office, but, alas, they don't open until 10am. I'll just have to plan ahead and get a box the night prior. There is limited parking in the lot and more spaces in the underground garage.
