I used to live/work over in the Pasadena area and one of my co-workers would always bring a box of these from the Lake Ave. location to work on the weekends. Never was a biggest fan of cream puffs, these particular treats converted me to a full-fledged fan. I also recall these powdered sugar treats being messy as all heck and we'd have to clean up since we were all dressed up before going back on the floor. However, there was always sloppy 'evidence' that one had just helped themselves to the yellow box in the back of house. Since Pasadena and the Hollywood location have closed, Sawtelle became a reasonable location due to moving over on the west side. Since then, I always have to make a stop at their location whenever I travel to LA area. This location is very convenient, right next to Nijiya at Sawtelle Japantown. An hour before I left Los Angeles, I stumbled into beardpapa's cream puff in nihon-machi. I saw a dozen different color-cooridinated cupcakes enticing for my attention. They were smiling at me. I smiled back. They are all homemade cupcakes. I couldn't resist the temptation. I got 3 of them. They are the best cupcakes I have ever tasted in my life. After grabbing dinner at Kula, my best friend was craving something sweet for dessert and I was already super full. I followed her into Beard Papa's and my nostrils were filled with such a sweet aroma that it made my mouth drool and made me want to buy one for later. They always have chocolate and vanilla flavors cream puffs but they switch up the special flavor everyday. I went on a Thursday and their special flavor was coffee. The other special flavors of the day are strawberry and green tea. The cream puffs are $2/each and they have minimum of $5 credit card. They have seasonal holiday boxes when you buy larger amounts of cream puffs/other pastries. The store has about 4 tables with chairs so you can still and enjoy the yummy treats before continuing your day. We got the cream puffs around 7:30 PM and we didn't eat it until around 10 PM and the cream puffs were still hard and not soggy! I've come in here frequently for years and have always enjoyed friendly and efficient service. This last week, however, I had the worst experience ever. I stopped in with a friend to buy three cream puffs: one for me, one for my friend, and one to take home. The woman behind the counter (a young Latinx) informed me that if I was to buy five, I'd get one free. I politely declined. One might think that this would be enough. Unfortunately, through the next ten minutes while I contemplated my order, she reminded - neh, insisted - that I increase my order from just three cream puffs to five, in order to take advantage of their special offer. I kept declining, but she kept pushing. When I had finally made my selections, she snapped an "Are you sure?" at me, as if I was somehow so mentally deficient that I would not know my own desires. I recommend getting the regular flavor with any of the pastries. You can't beat the regular flavor. They also have some nice artwork on the chalkboard. I will be back soon. You get to order exactly what flavor of puff you want, and they fill it with your selected cream right in front of you. MMMMMM... grab a napkin because invariably, the cream will spill as you bite into this heavenly puff. But your tongue will be so happy, you just won't care! They seem to run out of the mini puffs a lot, but I got to try them recently. Although I've passed by it numerous times, last week was the first time I actually decided to stop in. I've heard alot about the creamy custard inside of a delicate puff, and I'm glad to say this place lives up to its hype. I got a regular cream puff for myself, and decided to split a Smore's, Crispy Cookie and Honey Butter with two other friends. The crunch and crisp of the pastry was fabulous, and the custard inside was bountiful and rich. The three speciality flavors were also good, but it was a consensus that the Honey Butter was the one that stole the show. Also, these things can be a little messy if you're trying to cut them into thirds or even halves, as the custard is going to ooze everywhere once you put some pressure into it. You're better off getting your own, and you'll probably want one all to yourself anyway. read more

I'm not sure if it was amazing, though (or maybe I'm not enough of a cream puff connoisseur to really appreciate it??). The puff part is nice. It holds it's shape well and the outside shell is crispy and airy. I think that the flavors can taste a bit artificial, but perhaps that should be expected given that they are flavoring custard. My husband and I stopped by yesterday afternoon because we wanted a sweet treat after dinner. We ended up walking out without purchasing anything for two reasons. 1) It was uncomfortably HOT in there. Warmer inside the place than it was outside. Another customer opened the door to let the cool draft in. 2) We were never acknowledged by any of the employees.
