My husband and I tried one bite dumpling yesterday evening for the first time. We were seated promptly and ordered Jasmine tea. No water was provided which was a little weird but I'm sure we could've have asked for some. We got the chicken chow mein and chicken soup dumplings. I really enjoyed the chow mein, very fresh noodles and flavorful. I wish there were more noodles but it was still a decent portion. The chicken dumplings we received were dry and did not have any soup in it. They were also very bland tasting so we didn't finish them or take them to go with us. I would recommend this place for their noodles to be honest, a little disappointed with their dumplings and services but still a place I'd like to come back and try more food! read more

Spartan settings in a deep corner of a strip mall at William Cannon and Manchaca - this place is no frills, but serves up good Asian food which is so lacking in South Austin. Service is a little spotty as they work out the kinks (one open 2 weeks), but hopefully it will even out - they are very friendly and appreciative of your patronage. Walk in and take a look at the window where you can see dumplings made by hand. We feasted on a few things: 1. Braised beef and tendon noodle soup (this was sooo good). 2. Garlic bok choy (very good - a bit too much garlic for me but I think others would love it) 3. Mapo Tofu - so flavorful and a very good sized quantity. I like this one in small quantities since the peppercorn and its numbing effect isn't my favorite). Still - very good with the bowl of rice it comes with 4. Spicy wontons - slightly sweet and spicy. Good but was not expecting the portion to be as large as it was - like 10 wontons or so. 5. Soup dumplings - these were very good. Finally! Legit Chinese food in South Austin! I was so excited to try this place. Overall, the food is a solid A-, the service a B, the ambiance, well... maybe a B- (and that's me being generous). We had a large group, so tried quite a few things: - Soup dumplings (the crab and the pork): They're well filled, with a good chunk of meat in each. Both the crab and pork tasted really fresh, but a little under seasoned. The wrappers are on the thicker, stickier side, but not offensively so. - Beef roll: this was a crowd favorite. It skews a little sweet, heavy on the green onions, but it's yummy, and the fried roll gives a nice texture layer - Veggie egg rolls. Basic, but well prepared. - Bbq pork bun: Really nice. Soft, fresh, tasty. - Dry sautéed green beans. These were one of my favs! So good. Like I don't know how, but so good. - Braised beef tendon noodle soup: This was awesome. The broth is so rich, and the noodles are perfect. - Sesame balls: a little small, but tasty. - Chicken fried rice: again kinda basic, but solid The service was friendly and helpful, my only complaint is they didn't check on us much. Like we were trying to flag someone down for a while. Atmosphere: It's very clean, and I love the live food prep window--it adds a fun energy. That said, the interior feels a bit unfinished, like they haven't had the chance to fully dial in the vibe. Think bright lighting, a sparse setup, and a quirky mix of lantern-style and crystal light fixtures that don't totally match. Still, the food makes up for it. I will DEFINITELY be back. Happy for south Austin to have another Asian cuisine , especially since it replaces a legendary spot. My partner and I arrived at 1145 on a weekday and were pleasantly surprised to be greeted and seated immediately. There were probably 10 other tables being served throughout our lunch experience. You can order from a QR. code at the table and I assume you can order more and check out on their as well. I menu is straight forward and easy to understand, almost every item had a photo to reference. We got an order of salt and paper squid, pork soup dumplings, sesame balls. I was only taken back by the salt and pepper squid as I was expecting more body than rings. But it was well season/battered. The dumplings were very juicy initially but dry up quickly as the lid is taken and the dumplings dry out as it sits. Haha eat fast. The balls were okay. Nothing to crave for me... I ordered the crab soup dumplings, spicy shrimp soup, and shrimp lomein. Unfortunately, the only pic I grabbed was for the lomein and the dish I liked the least. The crab dumplings were great, the shrimp in both the soup and the lomein were great, but both were lacking flavor. I also really wanted to try the seafood dumplings, but I couldn't because it doesn't list what's in the seafood mix. My meal did come amazingly quick and hot at well! This restaurant is in the old Hao Hao space. There's lots of parking during the weekday. Servers were all so attentive! They were all extremely friendly. The owner, Jake was very nice. He took our order and also checked us out. To start, I had the cucumber salad, egg rolls, and pork soup dumpling. The cucumbers were thicker pieces which I liked and it had a lot of garlic slices which I really loved. The eggrolls had a nice crisp to it. The soup dumplings were really tasty! For my entree, I had the spicy beef noodle soup. The noodles are thinner than I'm used to but that's not a bad thing! Just something I noticed. The meat was super tender. I'd heard you had to pay for rice separately but that no longer seems to be the case. Our entree came with white rice. Don't get me wrong, I love myself some crappy greasy Americanized Chinese food. But this isn't what this place tries to present itself as. And it definitely doesn't hit like that kind of Chinese food. How it got such a high rating confuses the heck out of me. Nope same stuff from other shitty Chinese takeout spots Wontons in chili oil. Oddly sweet Crab Rangoon. Also oddly sweet, stale wrapper Beef noodle soup. Not bad. Green beans. Brown and wilted. Fish in chilli oil. Where was the fish?? Yang Chou fried rice. Why the heck is it brown and soggy?? Uncle Roger would be LIVID. On top of all that they garnished everything with wilted brown cilantro. None of the food looked like it did in the pictures. False advertising for sure! I was really excited when I found out that there's a new dumpling place in south Austin; however, it's a bit disappointing. We ordered their pork soup dumpling and it tasted really plain (my wife and I think that Costco dumpling actually tasted better than this lol) the scallion pancake isn't too bad but the portion is too small for a $6 appetiser. The black pepper beef udon is a letdown. - very salty, too much sauce and pepper. Service is decent, food came out decently quick. Parking is widely available. Even though this place specializes in handmade dumplings, I was pleasantly surprised to find other standout dishes. The Taiwanese basil fried popcorn chicken nuggets came out hot and with a generous portion. I really wanted to eat them like popcorn! But also don't sleep on the braised beef noodle soup. There are two versions on the menu, and they're equally flavorful with one being slightly more spicy and oily. The beef was tender and easy for my toddlers to eat. Took me a while to realize there was a QR code on the table to order from (would've been nice if someone told me that lol). I definitely over-ordered because I wanted to try everything, but overall the quality was solid across the board. We ordered a little bit of everything at One Bite Dumpling -- bacon fried rice, chicken chow mein, beef with peppers, udon soup, steamed soup dumplings, barbecue bao, Kung Pao chicken, and orange chicken. Every dish had its own highlight, but the bacon fried rice and the orange chicken stole the show. The rice was smoky, savory, and full of flavor, and the orange chicken had that perfect balance of crispy, tangy, and sweet. For the portion sizes and flavor, it's honestly a great value for your buck. Saw Yelp reviews for this place and had to check it out. We started with egg rolls which were carefully formed and deliciously crispy. Could have used a bit more of the sauce to dip all 4 of them. Then we enjoyed the beef rolls and were surprised at the larger size, the slightly sweet flavor and the crunch of the greens inside. Our pork soup dumplings arrived and they were not too hot to take the whole bite at one time. I thought these could use a bit of seasoning so added some soy sauce. The chicken corn dumplings contained corn kernels with ground meat and were tasty. There are no dessert options yet but the waitress said they hope to add some in the future. (Note: I write Facebook reviews for residents of Turner's Crossing, a new development in Buda, as we all learn about good places to dine in Austin.) ------------- I'm going to write this review while the memory of the great food we finished only minutes ago still lingers on my taste buds. Turner's Crossing neighbors highly recommended this place after trying it recently. Being a couple of foodies, wife Karen and I were anxious to give it a shot, considering we have not been at all satisfied with the Chinese restaurants we have sampled so far in the area. I think it's pretty sad when the best Chinese food we have had since moving here about two years ago is dished up at a buffet, the East Buffet at I-35 and William Cannon. See my earliet review of that place. We have been there at least five times. Note that if you Google One Bite Dumpling to check out the directions and the menu, you are redirected to the website of Bee Dumpling, which is apparently its actual name now. The restaurant itself is still adorned with a large sign that says One Bite Dumpling. Until they change the name on the building, I will refer to it as One Bite Dumpling. It is located in a strip mall at the southeast corner of the Manchaca Road intersection with William Cannon. The twin strips of parallel shops run perpendicular to Manchaca, so watch carefully for an entrance as you near the intersection. One Bite Dumpling is a spacious, comfortable and clean eatery with an extensive menu of goodies, many of which I have never tried. I grew up eating Chinese food on a regular basis, and almost every restaurant my family went to specialized in Cantonese style food. Since then, I have also become fond of Szechuan cooking, which is different and can be much spicier. After looking at the menu, I asked Oscar our waiter what Chinese cooking style was featured but he did not know, just said it was likely a mix of various styles. The menu was not specific. For my first of what I expect will be several visits to this place, I picked the chicken chow mein ($12.99), partially because ithe menu photo looked similar to the Cantonese chow mein I had ordered my whole life. Oscar pointed out that the portions are generous. He wasn't blowing smoke, because I took about a third of my dish home. It will make a nice lunch for Karen or me, depending on who gets to it in the refrigerator first. My chow mein was definitely not the same as Cantonese style, which I always enjoy, but I relished this change of pace. It was tasty, served piping hot, and satisfying. Big chunks of chicken were tender and coated with a delicious sauce. Karen, who had never eaten Chinese dumplings before, went with an order of the crab meat soup dumplings ($13.99). Interestingly, Oscar the waiter noted that Karen's order contained sausage, which I guess he does because some diners have an aversion to pork. I'm surprised that little cautionary note was not on the menu. Karen's dish was also steaming hot, and she carefully slid a large spoon beneath one dumpling to try it. She immediately nodded approvingly, so I knew we had a winner. Check out the menu online. Dumplings, especially soup dumplings, appear to be a lot more popular in Chinese restaurants in the Austin area then they were in the upper Midwest where we hail from. Karen graciously allowed me to sample one of hers, and it's something that I will be likely ordering the next time. We were also intrigued by one of the appetizers, labeled salt and pepper squid ($12). We vowed to include that in our dinner on our next visit. The restaurant has a pretty good mix of tables with comfortable chairs and the usual booths. Service was extremely efficient. We were also grateful that the temperature inside was comfortable, and sweaters or jackets were not needed like so many restaurants where they only have two settings for the air conditioner: Arctic blast, or off. We had a chance to enjoy a pleasant conversation with Oscar, who quickly commented on my Ohio State cap when we entered. In the first few minutes, he explained that he studied a year in Columbus at Ohio State. He later spent some time at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, and was a big fan of the state of Ohio. Of course, that was enough reason for me to give him a bigger tip. He spoke fine English with a thick Russian accent because his family came from Kyrgyzstan, formerly part of the Soviet Union. I was surprised at the heavy accent because he was born and raised in Chicago. Nevertheless, he is an affable chap and an excellent waiter. Ask for him if you decide to try One Bite Dumpling. The place is well worth the short drive from our neighborhood of about 20 minutes or so. After only one visit, we already have this restaurant among the top half dozen places in our rotation of eateries. read more

I was bummed when Hao Hao closed down, but I'm so happy One Bite Dumpling moved in and took its place! It seems like they're still decorating and getting in to the swing of things, but we had a great meal overall. Our server was friendly and helpful as we asked some questions about different items on the menu. We started with the Pork Soup Dumplings and Radish Salad. The dumplings were classic with a deep pork flavor and nicely steamed dough. The radish salad was really fun. We loved the crunchy, pickled kind of vibe the dish gave off. For our entrees, we got the Black Pepper Chicken Udon and Hot Spicy Beef Noodle Soup. The udon was really great and unlike anything I've had at other Chinese restaurants. I would highly recommend giving it a try, especially if you don't do spicy. The beef noodle soup was probably our favorite dish of the meal. It was heat spicy but also Szechuan peppercorn tingly. The noodles were delicious and the meat was flavorful and tender. We are looking forward to visiting One Bite Dumpling many times in the future to try more tasty food. read more

Tucked into the corner of a totally unsuspecting step mall, this delightfully delicious shop is very stepped down cafe style. Not a lot of art or ambience, just mellow Asian pop music, a couple TVs, and generic tables. The waitstaff is friendly and definitely not in a rush to get you out of the store. Take your time, eat several courses, you won't be disappointed. We had chicken pot stickers (delightful with the surprising pops of sweet in the corn), BBQ pork buns (always a winner), beef chow me in (good, nothing fancy), beef & bok choi noodle soup (excellent hearty broth, heavy on the beef, a little light on bok choi), and the start of the show: pork soup dumplings. None of us had tried soup dumplings before and now we're all hooked. I knew it was gonna be good when I saw dark vinegar on the table with the soy sauce. Amazing, we will be returning. read more
