I think it deserves 3.5 stars. Atmosphere: It's a lively place depending on what day you go. Normally, I choose to sit outside and sometimes it's hard to find a place to sit when it's busy. Ruggles has a certain smell to it when you walk in. I can't exactly pinpoint what it smells like, but it doesn't smell good to me! Food: I usually always get fish tacos, they're pretty good and the portion is big so I normally share with somebody. They're known for their white chocolate bread pudding, but some would say that the Ruggles in Rice Village is better. It's good at City Center, too! Their burgers, pizzas, and pastas are nothing to rave about. Their creme brûlée wasn't very good when I had it. It tasted too soft and runny almost. Service: Mediocre. I visited bellagreen a couple of weeks ago while in Houston for a wedding. I love any place that boasts homegrown, healthy, and fresh dishes so this place immediately called to me. My boyfriend and I weren't really starving when we dropped in so we decided to share a pepperoni pizza and the goat cheese salad. The pizza was great... plenty of cheese and sauce without it being soggy. The goat cheese salad had slivered almonds on top that gave it a great little crunch and the dressing they used was really tasty. The ambience was nice... not too loud or too quiet. You can spend quality time with your friends and loved ones without being interrupted by wait staff and you order up at the front counter so you don't have to wave anyone down for anything. Came with the fam for dinner on Saturday at 7. I was happily surprised that there was no wait, as I had been bracing myself for one. I'm a big fan of their order at the counter and seat yourself model, as it's super efficient. The ambience is also really bright and fun! The food was great. You could really taste the freshness and quality of the ingredients. I ordered a buffalo burger with mozzarella cheese and sweet potato fries, medium rare. The patty could have been a little more rare, but it was still really tasty. They really stack on the veggies, which I love, but it also makes this burger a knife and forker. The portion is really big - I wanted to get dessert but was too stuffed by the end. I also tried a bite of my dad's fried fish tacos, which was delish as well. Ruggles also gets major points for their excellent selection of hot sauces - Sriracha, Tabasco, and Cholula among others. This is a great healthy, family friendly, and convenient location. All of the ingredients were fresh and the dressing (on the creamy, sweet and slightly tangy side) went really well with the salad. The chicken, honestly, didn't look very appetizing as it didn't get a lot of grill marks on it, but it tasted great. The honey battered goat cheese was one of the best parts of the dish. The crust was crunchy and slightly sweet, and the cheese on the inside was really creamy and smooth. The fries were really crispy and cooked perfectly. It's best to get here early. I have come to this location several times and usually had a pleasant time. I ordered the veggie wrap with fries and my friend ordered a burger with fries. I was given a red sauce that was clearly not ketchup so I thought it was a mistake. My friend clearly had ketchup as I tasted both. What I was given tasted weird. I went to the counter where there wasn't any customers waiting and when I asked for ketchup, they looked at me confused when I told them what I was given wasn't ketchup. They handed me what appeared to be the same sauce. I went to go get my friends ketchup to show them the appearance was clearly different and asked that they taste it if they didn't believe me. I even said I'm not crazy after getting confused looks from 3-5 employees. One guy even mumbled something and made a hand gesture like "shoo" and said I didn't understand. I wasn't going to make this a bigger issue. Clearly they didn't care to see that maybe I was telling the truth that the red sauce I was given wasn't ketchup or was expired ketchup. I went back to sit and eat my food. About 10-20 minutes later, one of the young women who had told me it was ketchup came to our table and grabbed the 2 red sauce containers. I thought, oh maybe they finally realized I was right and she would bring me ketchup! No, she never came back. I left wondering what the purpose was for her coming to grab them. Ruggles is usually my go to anytime I enter the Houston area. I love it for so many reasons but mostly because the ambiance is fabulous the food is to die for and the cuisines are all healthy- minus if you're getting yourself into any dessert- than you know what you're doing . I absolutely love their veggie pizza and I like to get it with a side of the sun-dried vinaigrette dressing to dip it in, that makes it all the merrier. I also love the goat cheese spinach salad, I like to add salmon on it for some much needed protein. Their quinoa Mac n cheese is also good- when I order to go I usually get this along with a side of their house salad and fruit bc it comes with too sides which ends up being a cheaper and quite large meal. Their chicken caesar wraps are also bomb and are highly recommended. Try the Kobe burger- egg sandwich- and kale salad. Honestly I would say try anything on the menu and you'll be happy. After reading reviews and what not, I was dead set on coming here with my out of town friend for a Sunday lunch. I'm a person of restaurants, I love food more than most things and I can be a huge critic of a lot of things, especially service in restaurants. If I could describe Ruggles Green to someone who's never been, it's pretty much an upscale Jason's Deli. And I wish I had someone describe this in reviews for me because then, I don't think I'd be so dead set on coming here, or at least be prepared. While sitting outside there were even a few people who opted out of coming due to it not being a waited type of restaurant. Moving forward, You walk in, grab a menu and wait in a "lunch line" and figure out what you want to order before getting to the register. I ordered the South West Roasted Chicken pasta with a side Caesar salad. Once they put in your order, they give you a number to set on your table and you get your own beverage. We sat outside on one of the plentiful tables they have with in view of the center field watching families enjoying the pretty day. My Caesar salad came out first. Typical Caesar salad but it was also topped with roasted red peppers, pickled red onions and home made croutons. Different, but good. The pasta came next. First glance, it was very colorful and full of red from the tomato based sauce. It's a quinoa linguini pasta with shredded tender chicken with a lot of vegetables including bell peppers and even sweet plantains topped off with cilantro and queso fresco. I wasn't blown out impressed with it or anything and my friend ordered a turkey meatball Panini. While it had the grill marks I honestly don't know why they even called it a Panini as it wasn't even pressed down like one. It was basically a sandwich. The sweet potato fries however, were amazing. The reason I would only return is now that I'm aware of the type of service they have and to try the other things they have on their menu that looked delicious from what I saw others munching on. Oh and the location of how close it was the the field center and stage they have. This restaurant is a self-served so if you're looking for great interaction with the staffs, you won't find it here. (I feel like a few reviews below are upset because they don't understand how this restaurant work. I mean they take your order at the register???) On the weekends you can sit outside and watch live bands and people dancing. It's usually loud but lunch tends to be mellow. I've tried all their vegetarian stuff and they're really delicious. This place is so freaking good. But wow it's so pricey... too expensive for a casual weekly thing considering I eat out a wholeee lot. I got the buffalo burger, and it was PERFECTLY medium rare! And their housemade pickles... keep in mind, I freaking hate pickles. But they were so lightly vinegrated (?) that it seemed more like soft cucumbers with a little vinegar! As much as I love dark chocolate, I don't think I would have been able to take it if the whole cake was made with that dark chocolate.. it was THAT rich and decadent!! So the white chocolate balanced it out perfectly well. All in all, 50 bucks (with tip) for two college students, and this didn't even include drinks because we just like water. Worth it? Heck yeah. They also had slender upright fans blowing just in case it was too hot. If you were living in Houston in the 80's or 90's, you'll remember Ruggles Grill was the place for fine-dining in Houston. It was less stuffy than Tony's and the other high-end restaurants, and the food was fantastic. Most memorable to me, was the outrageous desert menu with something like 20 deserts to choose from. The Chef/Owner, Bruce Molzan, ran into some financial troubles and a famous dispute with it's staff over their claims that he owed them thousands of dollars in tips. The dispute culminated in a Saturday night walkout of the entire staff. Can you imagine being there on that night? ...Awkward. In 2012, Molzan closed the doors of Ruggles Grill for good. In 2008 Molzan and two partners opened Ruggles Green in the Upper Kirby district becoming the first Certified Green Restaurant in Houston, and it received a lot of attention from the local media. Now the chain has five locations across the city. So you are probably wondering "what's a 'green' restaurant?" According to their website they: Use local and organic produce and ingredients. Use all-natural meat products: no hormones, no antibiotics, no steroids. Compost with some help from their friends at Animal Farm. Offer the most extensive gluten-free menu in Texas. Use water saving devices like energy star dishwashers, low-flow sprayers, toilets, and aerators. Recycle everything: plastic, cardboard, glass, paper, metal, etc. Purchased electricity is 100% wind powered. Use100% LED (light emitting diodes) for indoor and outdoor lighting. Supplement their electricity with 2.5KW solar modules. Use state of the art energy management systems to regulate their electricity. Interesting concept, and admirable way of doing business, but does the food live up to the hype, and the Ruggles name? Nice digs I visited the CityCentre location for lunch one day, and business was good. The line to order at the register was backed up to Katy, and there didn't seem to be any open tables to sit at. No worries though, they have a large patio and there was plenty of seating over looking a large green lawn. The menu Ruggles Green's menu is pretty extensive with lots of options, from tacos and burgers to pizzas, and salads. I noticed a lot of dishes containing hemp. I have to admit the high-protein hemp brownies sounded interesting. Somehow I think they are different than the hemp brownies you might of had in college. After reading up on hemp protein, it is made from grinding up the seeds of the hemp plant, and while it won't get you high because it doesn't contain any measurable amounts of THC, it does contain all 21 amino acids, which puts it in the superfood category. Although, like legumes it is fairly high in carbohydrates. They also had lots of gluten-free options on the menu, but I tend to stay away from flour substitutes. Many flour substitutes have the same, high-carb and overly processed characteristics I'm avoiding by staying away from flour. Their Buffalo burger was tempting, but I was in the mood for a salad, and boy were there lots of salads to choose from. One interesting thing about Ruggles Green's salads is you can add up to six different proteins. The options are, goat cheese, chicken, tofu, salmon, grilled shrimp, and blackened shrimp. I was not very adventurous on this occasion, and just went with the grilled chicken. Although, the blackened shrimp looked really good. I opted for the spinach salad. Fresh spinach, boiled eggs, all-natural bacon, diced tomatoes, red onions, sliced Portobello mushrooms, croutons, and queso fresco; tossed with warm bacon vinaigrette. The monstrous line moved quickly, and by the time I made my mind up as to what I should order from the vast menu, I had made it to the polite cashier. The meal It took a while for my food to come out from the kitchen, but as I mentioned earlier, it was a very busy lunch crowd. The salad was beautiful. The greens were all organic and tasted very fresh. The chicken breast was tender, juicy, and well seasoned. The bacon they tossed into the salad gave it a wonderful flavor. Combined with the mushrooms, and boiled eggs, it turned out to be a very protein-rich salad. The best part was the dressing. The vinaigrette dressing was very tasty. Next time I'll definitely add the goat cheese though. It would have paired nicely with the sweet but tart vinaigrette. The only surprise, was that mixed into the salad, were lots of croutons. It was easy to pick them out, so it was fine, and upon further review, they were listed as an ingredient in the salad. All my gluten-intolerant friends need to be sure to ask for the gluten-free option. The verdict Ruggles Green's spinach salad is one of the best salads in town. And, with lots of gluten-free options, sustainably farmed meats, and veggies to choose from, I'll be back for sure. I dislike salads in general, but respect when respect is due. The quinoa mac and cheese is tasty, but requires sriracha. The veggie tacos are the go to vegetarian item here. This time, I ordered a squash spaghetti off the specials menu. Aside from ~3x too much olive oil, the dish was nice. It used mushrooms quite well. I also had the vegetable minestrone soup, which was a bit too much like cheap canned soup for me. Yes, I put sriracha on both dishes this time around. I'm not a freak for spicy food, but vegetables and salt alone do a terrible job of making water flavorful. Olive oil and pepper make a nice mix, but can't define squash noodles without more help. Looking around Ruggles Green is like staring into the struggling soul of the Texas millennial diet. Unsure of what to do with ethnic flavors but apply them to chicken atop salad or mashed potatoes, struggling to make the chicken for steak substitution in the first place, unsure of how to eat healthy aside from a salad, and still trying to make burgers and fries into a balanced meal, patrons of Ruggles Green manage to maintain a bright vibe despite these deep food-philosophical battles. I've never been to this location, so my first time here. I ordered a veggie nut burger. Naturally they ask which fries I wanted with my meal, I said sweet potatoes. My food came out with regular fries. No worries, I got up and asked them to exchange it. Ruggles Green is one of my favorite places in City Centre. The food is always fresh, the desserts are fantastic, the staff is friendly, and there's plenty of seating outside or in. The veggie sourdough panini is great - full of grown-up flavors with a great combo of veggies and hummus. The veggie burger is another pleaser that will satisfy even non-vegetarians. With any sandwich, I always opt for the crispy sweet potato fries. The desserts are great for sharing or eating whole if you come just for the final course. The best thing I've had was Charlotte's Web: a decadent layering of chocolate cake, espresso mousse, whipped cream, and heath bar crumbs. The pink velvet has great cake and cream cheese frosting, but the fruit filling tasted like store-bought jelly. I heard about this place for their awesome veggie burger so that was exactly what I got my first visit just last week. It was very much amazing and I would definitely go back to get it again! My friend and I also shared a dessert - "surprise me" we told the guy taking our order and so he did. I don't remember exactly what it was that he ended up getting us, but it was a dual layered pie that came with a scoop with real vanilla ice cream and that awesome bit of chocolate that began drooping after five minutes in the outdoors. I thought the dessert was good, though not the best I've ever had (I did love how the ice cream seemed to have bits of vanilla bean in it though). I still haven't tried their famous bread pudding - perhaps next time? There is a note: I wasn't sure how they work but apparently, you wait in line at the front where you order. Then they give you these long and flat plastic "cards" for each person where you take with you to your table of choice and you stick in this "docking station" which alerts the kitchen where you're sitting. I thought that was a genius idea. Service was prompt and they were very nice - as long as you go up to the counter. I initially just stood there looking around before I headed to the counter, but all was good. Also, you'd think that they have many tables but when it gets busy, they really don't - especially the outdoor tables. The food here is definitely good but I still find it a little pricey for counter-service but I do like the atmosphere with all the windows overlooking City Center and the fun/quirky paintings on the walls - my favorite is the parrot with a pirate on its shoulder, so clever! Just had the wagu bacon burger with sweet potato fries, and omg can I tell you this was the tastiest burger I've had in a really long time. Burger was cooked exactly how I asked, bacon was crisp with out being over cooked and had a glaze on them that made my mouth melt as soon as it touched my lips. 10/10 read more

They opted for butter lettuce instead of the usual iceberg and it just didn't mesh well, as I found it to be a little too savory. The dressing was creamy and chunky, but the salad was nowhere near as good as Sullivan's. The pink velvet cake is much too sweet with icing in every other layer. It tastes like vanilla cake that was dyed a reddish-pink hue. I think overall, I prefer Ruggles Cafe Bakery on Rice. An organic-certified restaurant with really great dishes but the service is in need of improvement and the serving system is awkward. You stand in line, place your order, you pay and then you are expected to tip before you even see your food, eat your food, and decide if the tip is even worth adding. I got the Ruggles Green House Salad and really enjoyed it. The portion size was huge and I really digged the dried blueberries! (Yum!) My other favorite is the organic spinach dip; it was a little on the heavy side but it didn't give me stomach cramps like regular spinach dip would. Ordered a pizza pie to share with everyone and by 2 slices, I was full. Still worth trying them out though. Aside from what I complained about earlier, the tables are too small for the large dish sizes they serve. When it comes to the city centre Ruggles green is a good place to visit. Its been a while since I've been back. I usually hit up yardhouse for the wide selection of booze. My usual is the veggie nut burger diary free add avocado with sweet potato fries. Delicious! I remember back in the day I tried the quinoa mac & cheese, the margarita pizza which are good, not great but still good. But now I solely rely on the nut burger, & who can forget the hummus. I think the hummus is exceptional! Comes with sun dried tomatoes & soft pita. My goodness my mouth is watering just thinking about it. A must try if you haven't already. Ruggles has a small selection of beer, wine, cider etc. I tried ace pear cider for the first time at this place, now me & a buddy are actually brewing are own cider cause of ace. Got to start somewhere, so we still trying to master the art. Anyways, facility gets busy around lunch & dinner time the usual hours. Service can be slow at those peak hours so be patient. Restrooms are small but clean which I appreciate. If you choose to take carry out, don't be surprised. They have a 3% increase on take out orders for the supplies. If your like me & appreciates a facility who only uses recycled goods & are environmentally then you wont mind. If you do then thats all you. Good place to try on a date night. Good place for hang out at City Centre. They offer variety of salads which are very healthy. You can never go wrong with salad here. I love the blackened shrimp and the Asian salad. Bathrooms were gross and dysfunctional. Half of the sinks and soap dispensers weren't working. The layout was strange. There were only two sinks for men and women and they were located in a communal space that was open to the public. Each toilet had its own separate door and everyone had to go around and try the handle of each door to know if it was occupied. The toilets were disgusting, pee all over the floor and toilet. It was clear no one was cleaning them with any regularity. The food was ok, definitely had better elsewhere. read more
