My family and I went to the Chandler, Az restaurant for my grandsons birthday. We were all very disappointed to say the least. The chef was trying too hard to be a one man show comic. The waitress/ servers were hard to understand and forgot to bring my Daughter her cocktail, then never brought our dessert. My steak was bad, every other bite was grisly. But the worst part was when my son-in-law was paying his tab, the rude server stood over his shoulder watching him enter his tip amount, she blatenly stated for all to hear: "That's not enough!" And my son-in -law called her out on it. When I asked about it, Ryan the manager at night was very rude and condescending acting like I was trying to steal a reservation. I have dined here before with no issues but when I came here for dinner last night I was very disappointed. My reservation was for 6:45, was sat at 6:50 with our server, Amy. The service started out okay with the soup and salads, but then we sat there for 40 minutes waiting on a chef. I went up to the host to express my concern and spoke with the manager, Rob. Rob was very apologetic, and said he would have a chef come out to us soon. He then stopped by the table to let us know the chef would be out soon. After about 55 minutes of waiting, our chef Alex came. The manager, Rob, did stop by to check on us right after our chef came out. I have nothing but great things to say about Alex! He immediately changed the mood of the table and provided a great service, show and lots of funny jokes. 11/10 for chef Alex! If I could rate just the chef, Alex, he would get 5 stars. I did hear the host tell our chef that our server, Amy, left...even though we hadn't finished our meal. The host then became our server, and did the best she could to fill in. The entire meal took 2.5 hours and cost $120 for two people. Very disappointed in how my dining experience went. I get things can happen, but it's all about how it's handled. Just left this location and everything was great until it was time to check out. Our waiter Romone kept my sister change from her check and Insisted that one of my sisters come back in and tip or he would have to come out of pocket and tip the chef himself. He messed up 4/7 of the tickets. I was so distracted by the mannerism he had for paying customers that I left my food on the table that I barely touched. Romone stole from my sister literally said that he didn't want to give her her change because he didn't want to pay the chef out of pocket. I hate to leave negative reviews, but I feel compelled. I can't speak to food quality because despite making a reservation, we never made it in the door. They take reservations and are even on Open Table, but they don't honor reservations. When we arrived, we were told that despite our reservation, there was an hour wait because they were "running behind." I had received a text and call confirming the reservation the day before so they had my phone number. I wish they would have simply called me and told me they were "running behind" or too busy to honor the reservation - we would have simply come later that evening. Instead, we stood outside waiting. One of my family members has a disability and can't stand for that long. There was nowhere for her to sit and we soon learned from others that they had been waiting for over an hour. Disappointing service and managerial response. Our party of four was seated with another party. Our waitress took our drink orders, came back later and took our food order. We waited the usual 20 minutes for the chef to arrive. The chef showed up with our food only to discover no one had turned on the grill. It was cold. And since it hadn't been used all day it wasn't even warm from previous use. We were told it would take 20+ minutes to heat up. So we sat there and waited. No one apologized. No manager visited our table. Nothing. 45-55 minutes after our arrival, the chef was finally able to cook our food. When all was finished, no one had said a word of apology or anything. The explanation of what had happened was the closest we got. It's disappointing because Benihana is not an inexpensive restaurant. You expect better responses from the managerial side. And charged the other persons check for my bill?! They ran my card again and sure enough since it's a duplicate charge they flagged my account for fraud. His personality really came out as he was cooking for us as well. He's inviting, friendly and funny, And he told the best stories.
