Hard to find but worth it! This restaurant is in a nondescript strip mall - and I would never have found it if I weren't dropping off some stuff at the Goodwill just a few doors down from the restaurant. [The Goodwill is in the same strip mall. There's small gym right next door, and the restaurant shares a wall with the gym, which makes for the occasional interesting (read, amusing) background noise, whilst dining.] Moving on to the food... The pork & shrimp egg rolls were so good! They were piping hot, definitely made to order. If the egg rolls were the only thing I ate, I'd return just for them. But I also had the rice vermicelli, also with pork and shrimp (2-item arrangement on menu); it was savory, refreshing and scrumptious. Portion was ample. I barely could finish my bowl but I wanted to keep eating, eating and eating; it was SO good. Thai iced tea was equally on-point. Didn't have time to indulge on dessert (hello cassava cake!) but I will definitely be back!* Parking is not a problem; lots of spots available in the strip mall. Prices were reasonable. Oh wow it has been 3+ years since my last visit to Benley and overall I still think it is one of the better Vietnamese restaurants in Los Angeles & Orange County, but there are other places in Little Saigon (e.g. Pho 79 Restaurant) that offer cheaper prices (just as good as Benley's food) and Benley's service has gone from great to average (e.g. I had to share the menu with my friend because our server only gave us one copy of the menu). *** Lemongrass Charred Pork Spring Rolls (2 spring rolls cut in half, $6.99): This dish also came with peanut sauce. Pretty expensive for 2 spring rolls, but I did NOT feel a bit of disappointment. Bowl of pho (rare slices of steak, $9.49): The broth was so savory that I drank the entire bowl of broth. The noodle were tied together like a globe knot, but nonetheless still tasted pretty good. *** If you ask me where can I find a bowl of pho with excellent broth OUTSIDE of the Little Saigon, then the first place I recommend checking out is Benley (yes - I like Benley's pho better than Golden Deli's pho). read more

I found this place within a short driving time from my work and was really surprised. Most people could miss it as it is not within obvious view from the streets. It gets packed during lunch hours in the middle of the week. The servers here really hustle, though. I love their lunch special: small banh mi or vermicelli bowl and a banh mi sandwich. The banh mi sandwich can run out though (or at least the bread), but it is really good. I also love their lemongrass pork banh mi -- it is my usual go-to. I usually pair it with their pork vermicelli noodles. If you have peanut allergies, do not forget to request for no peanuts if you order this! The pho here was also not bad -- the broth is quite flavourful and it is definitely better quality than what I have eaten in other parts of Long Beach and the western OC area surrounding Seal Beach. Because one person is taking orders and servicing all the tables, you can expect to wait for your food or a table. Disappointed. I ordered take out for pick up. Got home and realized they did not include all the items I ordered. Also, typically when I order pho from other Thai restaurants the noodles/meat are in a bowl container so I just have to add the broth, fixings, and eat. No bowl--I had to look for something at home large enough to put the chicken, noodles, broth, and fixings in. Pho is normally a fairly large bowl of soup--cereal bowls won't do. I had to resort to a mixing bowl. Not very much fixings provided--a sprig of Thai basil, small packet or hoisin sauce and sriracha, etc. Overall, not a great take out food experience. I thoroughly enjoyed everything I got to try. I had the lunch special with a lemonade and shared the fried green beans. The lemonade was delicious. Not as sweet as most places make it which I was super grateful for because usually lemonade is way too sweet for me. The green beans were so yummy. Crispy and sweet and just spicy enough. There were enough for four of us to share them. The banh mi was great, tasted fresh, and only got better as I got farther into the sandwich. And the pho had a stronger, richer broth than I'm used to. It was really good. I might not want that much flavor in the broth if I was eating a larger portion. Overall a delicious meal. I appreciate the little details such as the Cafe Du Monde cans, being that New Orleans is one of my favorite places! The spring rolls were delicious and peanut sauce made them over the top. The pho was my favorite part and although looks simple in my picture, once you start stirring it's like a little treasure chest. I found bok choy, cabbage, carrots, etc! For 9.49, their lunch menus offers a combo or either pho or bun cha with have a banh mi. I chose their lemon grass beef bun cha and their Vietnamese "ham" banh mi. I also shared an order of Benley's charbroiled pork spring rolls. Overall, the meal was good and filling, but I felt like my bun cha and the spring rolls were just vermicelli. The service was good and the restaurant itself is hidden within the plaza. It's a tiny little thing, but cute and minimally decorated. Others shared how much they enjoyed this dish. Now we know why. The beans are about the size of an asparagus spear. They have a light coating, similar to tempura, and served with a pleasant sauce. Don't miss out on this dish. I enjoyed the Meatball Pho. The meatballs had the texture of a hotdog. If you are expecting an Italian meatball (like me), you're in for both a very pleasant treat and surprise. My wife enjoyed a combo vermicelli. She added the pork and egg roll. She made a great call, but then I'm not sure if a bad call is an option at Benley. At lunch they have a sandwich available. I'd give this place a 3.5 - ATMOSPHERE It's a cute little spot tucked away at the end of a strip mall in Los Alamitos/Long Beach. I pass this strip mall all the time and had no idea it was even there. Glad my friend shared it with me. It's definitely a little gem of a place. It's nice and clean inside. They use the space well. It's small inside, but there's plenty of seating. We got there early but stayed through the lunch rush, and there was never a wait, but the place was packed. The decor is nice. They have photos of Vietnam (both HCMC/Saigon and Hanoi) actually taken by the owner's mother. Really cool! CUSTOMER SERVICE Our server is the owner. She was so great and welcoming. She was very helpful when I had questions about a few dishes and she always had a smile on her face. Gotta love that! FOOD I ordered off the lunch menu which, by the way, is a killer deal. So, if possible, go for lunch during the week! I got the BUN CHA GIO and the CHICKEN CABBAGE SALAD. I love the Bun Cha from Hanoi and was excited when the owner told me that the bun cha gio is the kind from Hanoi. They have an incredible selection of entrees that vary from meat lovers to veggie delight to everything in between! Quick: Delicious, thoughtfully presented and fresh. Pho is yummy, almost elegant but not the "best" you could ever have. Just a flavor of it's own. Banh mi's are also good and the green beans are a must. Pros: Vietnamese food, presented clean and a touch of care. Cons: If you're looking for "cheap" viet food, this is not it. So Benley lives in this strange place among restaurants. It presents a lot of authentic Vietnamese, but it has an Americanized feel and taste that differentiates it but doesn't take away from the experience. That's what I mean by touches of care or thoughtful. For example, the pho comes out and when you eat it, you don't think to yourself "Wow! This pho is beyond any other I've had!" I find myself thinking more, "This is very simple pho, but very delicious. Very balanced." The banh mi as well. The green beans though, these are a pow of flavor. Crispy breading and a slightly sweet and sour sauce makes these a tasty appetizer. Overall, Benley fills the void for Viet food in the area that is lacking such establishments. We always go to Gentle Care Pet Clinic right next to this Vietnamese restaurant and today we decided to give it a try and we were happy to have tried it. The brisket pho was traditionally sized and not monstrously big like most pho places and the pork banh mi was one of best that I have ever had. The pho broth was flavorful and the brisket tender and delicious, the texture of the noodles was perfect, garnish was fresh! 5 stars for this dish! Tiny small restaurant in a strange strip mall that looks abandoned half the time. The restaurant is TINY so be prepared to wait if there's a lunch or dinner rush. They have probably 15 table seating arrangements against one wall or the other and a small aisle in between. The great thing about a small restaurant is that you get to smell the heavenly aroma of delicious food and see what everyone else is ordering as the dishes are brought out to neighboring tables The crispy green beans are delicious. Think tempura with more spice. This is a must order! The pork egg rolls are bigger than normal and cooked perfectly. Served on a traditional long leaf of lettuce and a side of dipping sauce. Roll up the egg roll in a pulled off piece of lettuce, dip it in the sauce, and it's practically healthy! I love their simple pho with beef brisket. The meat is tender and has almost no fat on it at all. The broth is delicious, rich and savory. The serving size is great. The only cons are that it is a little pricey and they tend to run out of items on the menu after the lunch rush (like the banh mi). I've been there four times and there is usually only one server working. The restaurant is small but sometimes I think they need more help. Overall so so good. read more

I want to keep it to myself...BUT...it is one of my all time favorite places, so I should give it the stars it deserves. The Spicy Green Beans deserve their own rating. They are a 10/10!!! Every person should order them. I also LOVE the vermicelli bowl with pork and the Lemongrass Pork Spring Rolls. My husband and I eat here almost every week and are usually only disappointed when it's busy because we are spoiled. We've tried the chicken Bahn Mi and the Pho as well...ALL of it was delicious. Me and my mother have been dining here since I was in 4th grade! (I'm a senior in high school now) We have gotten to know the owners and they are so kind to us every time we come. We have even grown to know the waiters who always provide excellent service. I have brought my friends here and can guarantee a good meal here! I have gotten the same thing for nearly 8 years, the salmon with extra aioli. Occasionally I get the pork chops and with a fried egg. My mom loves the pork chops as well. The Banh mi is DELECTABLE! By the time I'm out of school, they've run out but when they have not, the banh mi is a MUST. Grilled pork banh mi is the go to! I always wash everything down with an iced coffee (it will keep you up, very good for finals) or an iced jasmine tea (QUENCHES THIRST). My mom enjoys the cassava cake and I frequent the banana foster. The lemongrass pork springrolls are AN ABSOLUTE MUST! The Benley community has shown us so much kindness and we have enjoyed every moment there. We've laughed, shared stories, and made memories while sitting at those tables.
