This place is alright if you're hungry and you don't want to spend too much money. I mean you'll be full but not necessarily satisfied. Pros: 1. Half off all sushi rolls 2. Lots of menu items to choose from 3. Large space so no waiting and great for large parties Cons: 1. If you order a roll with shrimp tempura, it will probably be stale. 2. The rice to sushi ratio is the reason why you're going to be full and maybe the reason why the rolls are half off. Too much rice that it overpowers whatever is inside/outside of the roll. 3. The Spider Roll is remarkably smaller than Godzilla 4. The waiter was ok, but kept forgetting to bring us stuff that we asked for, like ginger or water. This place is just ok. Let me start by saying I know they are doing a re-grand opening this Saturday, so for all you 1-2 star reviews give them another try... there will always be hiccups. My review is based on taking my first experience with a grain of salt. I understand there will be hiccups and servers may mess up a bit but my food was good, hot and on time. I got bento #1 I believe. Chicken teriyaki, rice, salad, tempura, and California roll. I have to say that the tempura was my favorite the crunch was perfect but it was light and not greasy. I would go back and order tempura every time. The chicken was good and so was the rice but I wasn't too hungry so I didn't eat too much of it. The California roll was standard and had good flavor. We also ordered something called Jale Bombs I think.. they were jalapeno with crab dipped in tempura and fried with sauces on top. Those were bomb and I would order those again too. Now when I say there were hiccups I mean that one person at our table got her order way late and it was wrong. So we were all basically done by the time she got her food. The other problem was they forgot to bring us a roll. So yes there were problems but it wasn't bad enough or affected to change my review. Give them a try again and keep in mind they are still ironing out the wrinkles. If you still don't like it then that is your choice but don't judge them by the first visit read more

I am always looking for good, local sushi restaurants and Bento Box was recommended by a friend. Once I knew all the rolls were 50% off, I decided to give it a try. I went with a friend on a Sunday afternoon and the place was fairly quiet. I ordered 2 rolls, the SMUD (because I love Yellowtail) and the Spicy Chop Chop (because I love scallops...and this roll has a good, spicy kick). The rolls are fairly large for the price, so that's a definite bonus. They're also quite tasty. The miso soup could be saltier, which tells me it's probably watered down. My friend had a bento box with teriyaki chicken and really enjoyed her meal. The waiter recommended the pickled cucumbers...they were not very good. My main issue is with the staff. There were only a few tables of people there when I arrived and 3 different waiters. I, thankfully, had the less clumsy of the waiters. One waiter spilled an entire glass of water on one person as he set it down. Another approached a customer from behind to put down a hot bowl of miso soup in front of her. The customer was talking, waved her hand, and there went the soup! My waiter brought my miso soup and it was sloshing as he set it down. When my table was the only one that my waiter was in charge of, he was very attentive and helpful. When he had to take care of a 2nd table, it was hard to find him to get the bill. When I was given the bill, I was waiting for him to return. When he didn't, I went to the front desk and had to wait a few minutes for a waitress to arrive to let me pay. I never saw my waiter again. It seems like the wait staff have not been trained in serving techniques or even how to carry liquids. This is an easy fix and won't prevent me from returning. However, I'm not sure I would want to come when it's busy until they train their staff. read more

What amazed me is how so many sushi places in sac are half off. How can they do that? The sushi was decent for half off. They have a large selection of rolls. We ordered with and it was just enough for us. Anyway, thus place looks super cool. The decor is nice and it's spacey. Gosh, service always happens to ruin everything. There were so many servers and bussers but we had to constantly ask different people for things. We asked 3 people for the bill. And we were hardly checked on. So many people around us were getting serviced though. On top of that, they had pitchers on the menu for a cheaper price and then when we got the bill back, the guy said that it was an older menu...we even kept it to show him. Seriously??? It must be honored since that was the price that was listed. This place is really sketch, and they need to get their standards up and hire new people. read more

This place is fantastic, and they went out of their way to accommodate our large group of 28. We were there for a team dinner for our volleyball tournament. They were very organized, attentive, and able to split our bills so each family can pay for their own. We were able to get a reservation for our large group and put in our order ahead of time. Food came out less than 30 minutes after we arrived. Food was great with generous portions. Service was wonderful. The place is spacious and has a good vibe. Everyone had a good time! At first I wasn't a fan of Bento Box, but after coming here a handful of times I am now a fan. Sushi in Sacramento is competitive, which you may have noticed when you've gone into a given sushi restaurant in Sacramento and saw that the rolls were 50% off. This wouldn't be my first choice for sushi restaurants, but I think that the locations are pretty central and a good place for large groups. The fish isn't top notch as compared to Mikuni, Sky Sushi, or Sushi Mon, but still it does satisfy your sushi cravings. PROS: The rolls are affordable and a good size. Also they have DOZENS of rolls to choose They sell $1 saki bombs with any food purchase. The restaurant is HUGE so you can come here with a large group of people. They are quick in their food preparations and I've always had good experiences with the servers. CONS: it's always freezing cold in the restaurant, so bring 3 sweaters if you run cold. Also, the rolls are slightly more pricey than its restaurant counterparts (Blue Nami, Arigato, etc). Quality of fish isn't superb either. Overall, this isn't my #1 sushi restaurant of choice, but I do agree to come here when I am invited by friends and when the location is convenient. My wife and kid dropped by here the other day while I was busy out in suburban hell on a Sunday afternoon. Fortunately for them, it was happy hour and they started munching on rolls while my wife ordered a beer. I got done with my work and rolled back into town just before happy hour finished up and joined them. What I saw impressed me. The place decorated in a modern, eclectic fashion and is generally very nice to look at. The entire outside is glass so, if you like people watching like we do, then get a seat by the windows and enjoy the view! They had already been sitting there for a while and had built a nice rapport with the bartender/server. She was very friendly and helpful. Being Sunday afternoon, I expected the place to be empty. It was quiet but had a steady stream of people coming and going. Service times were apropos for a sushi restaurant and I didn't wait long for anything I ordered. Being that it is a California sushi restaurant, expect your standard California types of rolls: saucy, strange names, spicy, etc. and not your traditional sushi. We will be going back! read more

As far as sushi restaurants with 50% off sushi rolls, this is near the bottom of my list. The food was ok, but not as good as Arigato, Sushi Hook, etc. I ordered a torched roll- TNT (Deep fried shrimp, avocado, cucumber, salmon, topped with spicy scallops). Other than some black spots on the roll, it was barely torched. Another deal they have to lure customers in is that they have happy hour from 2:30PM-6PM and 9PM-Close. No thanks. Got my food delivered, this place is seriously going downhill. My ahi-poke was completely submerged in the sauce, and there was chunks of jalapeño and seeds which I've never seen before. I also had a long lovely strand of hair worked into my California roll. I'm not sure how hard it is to wear a hairnet or put your hair up when handling food as it seems hair in food is a COMMON issue based on the reviews. I like this place, but they take a long time. My favorite roll here is the paradise roll which is pretty standard, but today all of the sushi rice was undercooked. The rolls left a hard grainy crunch at the end. We also ordered a bento box and they forgot our rice for the box.... I like the fact that it's a late night sushi bar that's 50% off but service takes a while.....like a while while. They have 2-3 servers on the floor for the whole restaurant which is just insane. I told the waiter it was our first time and she didn't seem to care when I told her I didn't like it and I didn't want it boxed up. I was pleasantly surprised with this place. I went for the evening happy hour. The only happy hour item I got was the baby octopus. You get about 5 pieces for $5. I thought it was ok. I'd probably skip it next time. On the other hand, the wakame side (seaweed salad) is a good serving for the price of about $3.99 I think? All rolls are 50% off all day, every day. It's a marketing tactic, but the rolls are big, and I thought the 50% off prices were a good deal. They also offer 10% off for government and students on non-special, non-discounted items. Granted, there aren't many items left that are not on special, but getting $1 or $2 off the bill is still something. read more

Every time I come to this location the service is so bad. The waitress took so long to ask us for our drinks and then when we did she forgot my moms drink. A different waitress brought it. On top of that when our food came out not one time did she come check on our table to see if we needed anything. We had to flag down a different waitress for wasabi and ginger because our waitress was nowhere to be found. We had a pretty rough experience at this midtown Bento Box last night. Five friends and I were attending a concert at Memorial, so we thought we would stop and get dinner first. The show began at 8:00 so we gave ourselves plenty of time and showed up at 6:10 pm. We walked in and were greeted quickly, the restaurant was pretty empty. About four tables were seated in the main dining room. We asked for a table for six, which the host quickly put together out of two smaller tables. We sat and waited for the rest of our party to arrive, which took roughly ten minutes. This where things took a turn. The restaurant became busier, and a steady stream of people started trailing in. They were all sat immediately with no buffer times, and the single server on the floor was immediately swamped. While there were four or five other employees around rolling silverware and leaning on the host stand, this one man was going to every single table (albeit slowly, but I think he may have been new) and handling all of the orders and eventually the food running as well. After twenty five minutes of being seated and noticing our looking around, the host came over and asked if she could get some drink orders started for us. We all asked for waters, and a few people in our group ordered sake bombs and beers. She said our server would be over shortly. It was at this time that three of the two-tops that had walked in after us all got their food before we had even spoken to the server. Finally after nearly everyone around us got their food he came over and asked what he could get for us. This was now forty minutes after we were seated, and we still had no waters or drinks. He was kind and clearly busy, but that is a dramatic wait time for something as crucial as water, when there were so many other employees seemingly doing nothing. Twenty five minutes later, the group was elated because food started coming out. It was the bento box that I had ordered, and one small miso soup that was part of a friend's order. We didn't wait around for everyone else to get their food, now being in a crunch for time and not knowing how long it would take. Over the course of the next twenty minutes, I would eat my entire bento box and still no one else's food had come. Finally, when we had twenty minutes left out of a two hour buffer time before the show, everyone else's bento boxes and sushi arrived. So, now everyone had to absolutely slam their sushi and food, and in some instances waste some because we were so rushed for time. Realizing it would likely take a very long time to get the check, we asked for it as soon as the food arrived. As everyone finished we were looking around everywhere for the server trying to tab out, but could not find him anywhere. Finally at the last possible moment for us to leave and still get seats, he came to the table and we paid via his card terminal as fast as possible, not realizing that an 18% gratuity was added automatically. We have all been servers and realize staffing is hard right now, but because of this added gratuity being unclear and in our manufactured scarcity of time we tipped on top of that, leaving a cumulative 36% tip for very poor service. I think the blame falls on the shoulders of a lot of people within this restaurant, it seemed like there was no one managing it and everyone was left to their own devices. So, my two stars represent the food being tasty and our server at least seemingly trying to do his job but this whole experience was so long, tedious and ridiculous that I doubt any of us will ever be going back to Bento Box. I hope this review reaches the right person within management that can look at what was wrong and take the steps to fix it. read more

Definitely has potential. There's a great flavor profile. Sushi rolls are a little sloppy as far as presentation and I would highly suggest getting some soy sauce with any roll. Don't turn a blind eye to the light green soupy wasabi. It def gets the job done. read more

The only thing I regret is that I didn't take those pictures of the sushi that I have ordered from this place it was delicious. They have meters on the parking lot on the right side on the building. We used to go here all the time. It has gone downhill. Will not be back. Service was horrible. They got the wrong item and still tried to charge me for it. Appetizers came same time the food did. My husband finished his food and my chicken bowl was still not ready. It came out cold including the ride and when I asked if it was suppose to come cold they said no and said they can re make. It had taken so long at that point we couldn't so we said just the check please. They still charged us for my untouched food.
