I'm sad to leave this review, because Bento Box has been a staple for my family for years. Today's lunch was such a disappointment that I can't let it slide. I ordered a roll I hadn't before, and it arrived with ingredients not listed on the menu description (that I can't eat, nach). I asked the server to have it prepared as described, and he argued with me for two minutes, until I asked him to bring me a menu so I could re-read the description - maybe I just missed it? He rolled his eyes at me, brought the menu, and when I was proven right, he told me he'd have the kitchen re-make the roll, but that they were busy and the order would go in at the end, not jumped to the front of the line. At this point, the rest of my table had finished their meals, so I told him to forget it. He brought the bill, and had charged us for my roll - left uneaten. When asked, he wouldn't remove it from the bill. read more

LOVE this place! I got Bento Box # 2 which came with chicken teriyaki, mixed Tempura, sashimi, rice, & salad for $14.99! The chicken teriyaki was so yummy and juicy, especially with the sauce at the bottom! The sashimi portion was fresh and cool, none of that "fresh from the sea" smell. It says the sashimi is "Chef's Choice" but from my experience I've always been able to get my choice, which was always either Salmon or Tuna. And the salad is awesome too, but you can't really go wrong with salad. A friend of mine got the King Kong Roll and by no means DO NOT underestimate the size of this roll. It really lives up to it's name! It was HUGE! Mildly spicy, but just right. It comes out on a beautifully decorated plate that you're hesitant to dig in, but when you do you'll be glad you did! The service is really good. The waiters and waitresses are all really friendly and are attentive to your needs are not annoying, asking 2 too many times how the meal is. I was excited to try this place out because I was on a real bento box meal kick a few weeks ago and I have to say that I just wasn't impressed. The food lacked flavor and it just seemed kinda pricey for the quality. It is probably the best choice for sushi in the area if you go to Sac State (Tokyo Fros is good for fried rolls), so I will most likely go again to see if maybe another plate hits the spot. read more

Many places for me fit the 3.5 star range. Bento Box is no exception. It's like getting a B- on your school assignment. It's better than average. I do like this place eventhough I would not lean on it for sushi. I really can't understand how some tout this place as having great sushi. It'd be like going to a steakhouse for a great salad...it's just not their specialty...but Bento boxes/terriyaki are. I believe the owners are Korean which would explain the presence of bibimpap in a traditionally Japanese-centric eatery (read: Bento boxes). Of note, I tried the bibimpap. I'd never had that dish before. I will never have it again [BLECH!]. Not my "thing" evidently. Aside from a "steer clear" of the sesame chicken (it's mostly breading), the chicken teriyaki is wonderfully grilled and marinated. Everything else is pretty good (rice, salad, tempura, steamed vegetables). The specials are decently priced enough ($9.99-$14.95) and come with sushi, tempura, and salad with variations depending on just which bento box you order. There are "bowls" which provide enough food if you want to skip the salad and sushi additions and are less than $7. Despite what I said about the sushi, I have to applaud the shiro maguro nigiri. The waitresses are kind but hurried. Expect a sizable wait around lunch hours. The inside of the establishment is small yet there is outside seating. Atmosphere is energetic/noisy. I've made a meal of simply ordering a 2-piece nigiri and a bowl of miso soup, possibly adding a side order of broccoli. Healthy, cheap to average pricing, and tasty. Recommended for a lunch spot. read more

I eat here with my family frequently, and we get our dinners to-go pretty often, too. Great place, we really like them, and enjoy sitting on the patio (it kindof merges with the patio for Jamba Juice and there's a fountain nearby). Yummy yummy food. We love their rolls, esp the Rock and Roll, and the Volcano roll. Once I thought a blob of wasabi on my niece's plate was avocado, and when she let me have the last piece of sushi, i popped that wasabi blob right into my mouth... briefly, before realizing my error and ejecting the bulk of it into a napkin discreetly. if i could give this place less than one store, i would. i have been a loyal customer for over 5 years and ordered my usual pick up. i came home and a roll was missing from my order so i called to inform them and they agreed to comp that roll the next time i came in. They went the extra mile to call me back 15 minutes later and let me know i wasn't charged for the roll so i couldn't get comped the next time I ordered because I wasn't charged. However, I had my order REPEATED to me before it was placed and we travel almost 30 minutes to get this mediocre college sushi. i'm done with Bento Box. they don't offer saki bombs anymore and overcharge for everything. safeway sushi is better than this place. don't give them your service. read more

The last time I came here, I had ordered the expensive bento box (OH YEAH my first review about this place was when I went 2 months ago; this updated one is from earlier). This time around I ordered the gyoza (6 pieces for $4.95) and a lion king ($10.95). I looove looove lion king.. anywhere basically. There are some places where it's a hit or miss with how they make it but here was pretty good. I can't remember how many pieces it was but it was soo much I had to have my friends take some. I loved the gyoza, especially the regular spicy sauce it comes with. I wish it was steamed rather than fried. I tried my friends unagi heaven ($9??) and it was pretty good. It just had waay too much sauce though. What's their deal with oversaucing? I would give this 3.5 because this time around, the service was good and the food (choices I made was better) turned out pretty yummy! The Adventure Roll was huge and super flavorful. The King Kong roll had a nice variety of items in it, but not over the top with the rice. The kids ordered the chicken pan-fried noodles and the sesame chicken bento box. They seemed pretty happy with their orders. Super fast with the food, even though it was a busy Friday night. Everything came out very quickly, though the server forgot to order one of the rolls for us. I think that the biggest drawback for me was the fact that the wasabi was extremely weak... Inside Loehmann's Plaza, between Jamba Juice on your left and big old Save Mart on the right is little old, Bento Box. If you blink, you might miss it. This place is a true gem of a restaurant! The sushi is good, but we go there exclusively for the many teriyaki dishes. If you like teriyaki...anything teriyaki, you will love this place as much as we do. The owner and staff greet you as though you're family. Warm and inviting. The décor and prices are wonderful as well! We eat there every Friday night. We highly recommend it. read more

I came here during New Year's because it was the only place I saw opened. First of all, there are too many tempura and fried roll selections. The rolls I received were huge though. Had a Rock N'Roll and a Vegetable Roll. The former had a funky mix to it, don't think scallops and eel sauce = delicious. The latter was something expected. First time eating here. I was excited because I love most things bento related. I think the name is really cute, and was looking forward to eating here. Food was fresh, nothing spectacular, nothing mind blowing, but perfectly cooked rice, a simple sunomono, a good variety of vegetarian options, teriyaki silkened tofu was good, but the sauce itself was too floral for me. I'm not sure if they add orange blossom water, but it's just really floral, not enough to spoil my meal, just not my preference. Portions are hearty, but I wouldn't recommend dining here with a large group, because when you walk inside, you REALLY ARE in a freakin bento box!!! It's very small, so I'd suggest if dining there, go with a friend, a beau, maybe your kid for a quick bite to eat. Service is retarded. As soon as she sat us down she handed us the menus, and said "Do you know what you want yet?!!" Sorry we haven't even opened the menu yet so chill! We received our drinks, and yet again... "are you ready yet?" NO!!! You idiot! We've been here for a nano second give us a break! I hate feeling pressured into ordering my food like it's a life or death situation. I work across the street so I come here semi-regularly. Even though I feel it's just a smidge overpriced, I absolutely LOVE their Tofu Teriyaki. Yum. I've never tried anything else on their menu, because nothing stood out as something I would want to try (for whatever reason), until today. Because it's a bit windy and chilly out, I was craving some pho. I didn't want to drive anywhere so I decided to walk over and check out their udon (they use veggie broth! Yay!). Yeah, I spent almost $10 on something I very easily could walked next door to SaveMart and purchased in their asian food fridge for less than $2. A dollar more, I could've added some shrimp. Not a lot of veggies and no redeeming tofu or anything. :( I think I'll stick to my Teriyaki Tofu from now on. read more

I can't eat sushi so this review is just for the other items on the menu. We come here fairly often so I have a lot of favorites. One of my favorites isn't even Japanese, it's Korean. I heard the owner is Korean so they also have some really tasty short ribs on the menu. Beef and chicken teriyaki are both good, as is the sesame chicken and the spicy shrimp. The udon noodle dishes are also yummy. The only thing I don't like is the dressing on the salads--it tastes too powdery to me. I usually substitute broccoli for it. It's surprising I don't like the dressing though because the other sauces are all quite good, particularly the ones that come with the spicy shrimp and the short ribs. We usually get take out, but I do enjoy eating in the restaurant also since you are served in the traditional bento boxes, which I really like. Japanese tableware just makes me happy;-) Whether we dine in or take out the service here at the Loehmann's Plaza store is always friendly. read more

My daughter and I have been to this place a couple of times and so far both times have been very good. I ordered the bibimbap and it was delicious. They give you your own bottle of chili sauce along with a huge metal bowl filled with rice meat and vegetables. Amazing! I Wanted to give this place 5 Stars However the stuffed jalapenos wayyyyy too HOT!!! they needed to be boiled first & the seeds cleaned out to take away most of the Heat/spice so the food tastes good with what they stuff inside of it instead of the heat just takening away from all the other flavors making it unedible to me and I'm guessing most people! Well my first time today here and not happy. The "spicy popcorn chicken" legit had no spice and barley any thing on them. They were little deep fried peices of primarily bread not the chicken and it was dry . The teriyaki chicken didn't come with any teriyaki sauce. The servers are younger, you can tell they don't give a care about their job and have attitudes. Won't be returning. I only gave it a 2 because the food was edible but not worthy of a return visit. Update: Took too long to get bill so I had to go get it from them. they asked me when I checked out how the food was and I told them I wasn't happy and it was not good. He said oh , all well. They were nice butttttt...no. I ordered the hwe dup bap, didn't get any soy sauce let alone the spicy sauce it was supposed to come with. I ordered a side of pickled radish, had to wait an additional 15 minutes for it, when all it needs is to be scooped up and put into a container, also didn't get the miso soup. For the chicken "teriyaki", he got literally 2 tablespoons of teriyaki sauce in a container. Overall taste of food was average. Alaska roll was pretty good read more

I was shocked that this place had really good sushi. I went in and was expecting horrible food because they had korean barbque and ramen on the menu. I was blown away.
