Instead of pho, I would come here for all the other classic Vietnamese dishes that come second fiddle at other Vietnamese restaurants. My favorite dish here is Hu Tieu Ap Chao. I ordered takeout. My food was ready on time and waiting. It took me about 4seconds to be in and out and in that time, the restaurant was clean, the staff was friendly and the price was fair. I got pho, salt and pepper squid, spring rolls and these little shrimp, pancake things. Everything was fresh. I prefer my salt and pepper squid spicier but that was my only negative. This is a true hidden gem. Hidden mostly because it's hella north and middle of nowhere. BUT the food is legit...well at least half of it is. If you want American Asian, there's a wide variety. But the star of the show is off their "special menu", basically what's on the chalkboard and not on the actual menu. Everything on the chalkboard is in Vietnamese, so you'll need to be some google searching. Truly worth it though. Must gets: bun bo hue, the crab stir fried vermicelli noodles, the bun rieu noodle soup (comes with a fried soft shell crab on the side), and the crispy noodle dish. Again, just do a google image search and you'll get a sense of what's offered. Staff is super sweet and service is great. OK, been a while since I reviewed a restaurant....years in fact. Blame it on the pandemic and also, I've just been really busy. BUT....I can't give this place a 5. 5 is for restaurants where I leave and think...."Wow! I'm blown away by that place." Bep was more, "Wow. I was hungry, it was darn good." Food...This is why we come, right? You have one (main) job. To make the best possible cuisine. So to that for Bep Saigon I say....it was really very good. I ordered the pork vermicelli (Bun) with egg rolls. After eating at Bep, I'm going to remain partial to Pho Hoang on Louis Henna. But, that could just be a matter of my taste buds versus yours. NOTHING was wrong with this food except for one tiny thing....the egg rolls seemed to be....uh....old? Maybe reheated a couple of times....? I have no idea about these things, but they seemed a little dry, as though the re-heating process had dried them out too much. Tasted fine though....it's just a mouth feel kind of issue. I expected more moisture.... They basically had the same table condiments and I was delighted with that. I love to add Sriracha and Hoisin to give it a sweet/hot kick in the fish sauce. Service...There is no service. Not here. Not at Pho Hoang either. They just seat you, take your order and quickly deliver your food. I don't expect additional service and so I am not disappointed. They are there to make a buck feeding people. So speed is of the essence. That and good food. They provided both of those things. Ambiance...Bep Saigon is located in a strip center retail slot. It neither stood out nor did it make me wonder if I was going to get food poisoning or get mugged. I don't actually remember the atmosphere, so let's go with non-descript. When you go to Tino's Greek restaurant, there are pretty pictures of the buildings in Santorini on the wall....there is at least the possibility that you will feel like you are in Santorini---well or not at lunch in Austin. At Bep....no such effort was put forth. I wouldn't know Saigon if it walked up and slapped me in the face. No trace of it here either. Now I will say, you can see the kitchen area and all the service items. If that is somehow atmospheric to you....then this place is for you! There is a fridge with drinks in it up by the cashier and a table with silverware/napkin wraps....menus, too. That's about all the decor they could manage. You will not be going here for the ambiance. Again, it's just about eating. Tables are tables. That's it. I think if you bring people, as in don't go alone like I did for lunch, maybe that is supposed to be your "atmosphere." There were lots of people eating here which is a pretty good sign that the food is good. Price....Dang. This sucks. I would say it's expensive...but it's probably average. You can pay almost as much for a burger, fries and a soft drink as you will for a bowl of vermicelli and a drink here. So, keeping that in mind, it's not really expensive....but only by comparison. The stupid pandemic caused the prices of so many things to skyrocket. Bep Saigon was not immune to this pressure, so they had to go up on their prices as well. I paid about $15 for my meal. It's a shame, but we all are dealing with it, so that puts inflation pressure on all of us and makes for a level playing field. But I still think $15 for lunch is expensive. But that is just me. Maybe you think that's a bargain. Maybe it is...maybe I'm cheap. In summary, it's Vietnamese. You want Vietnamese food? Try this place. Try some of their dishes....I did see people order other items from the menu and got to see their food at tables around where I was seated. It looked good. They seemed to enjoy it a lot. What do I know? I'm stuck in 1999 on Bun that got me hooked on pork vermicelli dishes for a lifetime.....From Bep, I have only ordered (my favorite food on the planet) one thing: Vermicelli with pork and eggrolls. I didn't sample, for instance, their French-influenced Vietnamese coffee which I dearly love at Pho Hoang. It might be good....But I'd have to go back there sometime, and, to be truthful, I only ate here because of where I happened to be working that day, and it was closer to me than Pho Hoang, but only by a couple of miles. My decision was a coin toss, influenced by time more than distance. But, I like to find new places. You will probably like the Bun here. I did. Maybe they had a bad day with the eggrolls. Everything else in my bowl was certainly good. So, overall I give it a 4.7 rating, but here's the thing: Yelp just goes with a round number...." You want 4? OK. You want 5? No problem. You want something between those two numbers? F. U. Let us do the averaging Mr. Consumer. Don't tell us how to run our business. We INVENTED ratings..." This review was actually going to be a 5 star review previously. You know, this place actually impressed me very much the first time I've had it. Everything was great. The atmosphere, food, and service. It's very nice on the inside compared to other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. They offer many traditional Vietnamese dishes that you can't find at other Vietnamese restaurants. One of my favorite dishes here is the Hu Tieu Ap Chao. However, the more often I visited Bep Saigon, the more I left disappointed each time. For example, I ordered pho tai gau (rare steak and fatty brisket) to go and I get pho tai sach (rare steak and tripe) I don't even like tripe. Is it that hard to read the order off the ticket you guys printed? I don't understand. Another example of the declining service is when I've asked for the ap chao to be spicy. They will stir fry the hot chili oil and sriracha together so everything is blended well. There are several occasions where they just forget to do so, even after the server writes down the order. They will proceed to give me sriracha and hot oil and tell me to just put it on top. Not the same. Overall, a decent place. If they improved communication between servers and the kitchen, I think they deserve the 5 star review. read more

Ease of online ordering 7/10: easy enough to order, but not all food is available to order online such as the sweet and sour vegetable soup (canh chua) or braised fish (can kho). Sadly this was the only positive part of my experience. A pickup estimation was provided for 15-30 minutes. Check in process 0/10: The area is small, and there isn't really any way to figure out how to check in/pick up an order/wait to be seated. And there was no one at the podium to ask, though at least three different employees did walk past me and avoid eye contact. Customer service 0/10: when someone finally came over, they ignored me and sat down a couple of people waiting off to the side. They never came back. A few minutes later, I was able to make eye contact with someone bussing tables and they came over. I let them know I placed an order online for pickup, and that it should be done as it had been about 40 minutes. They took a glance at the table with orders and didn't find mine, and with no other context told me it would be another 15-20 minutes. They didn't even make an attempt to check the kitchen. At that point I asked to just cancel my order because I highly doubted I was going to see my food anytime soon. Food quality: unknown, I never got my food. COVID protocols 0/10: as I was waiting, I was able to observe the restaurant and I can confidently say I won't be back. There is absolutely no distancing at tables, and they were jam packed next to each other. Staff do not wear masks, and often helped multiple tables at once (bring out food, drop off bill, collect payment, etc) with zero hand washing or sanitation between. Overall 0/10: I consider it a blessing that my food wasn't ready and that I could cancel my order. I guess because they are seeing success with their questionable practices my guess is they won't be motivated to make changes anytime soon. Yelp gets it right again! Four and a half stars. * * * This is a half normal/half innovative Vietnamese/Chinese kitchen. Servings are massive. Prices are low. Lots of the items you have seen before such as Mu Shu Pork or Generic Pho. The execution on the standard dishes that I saw (Mu Shu Tofu and Vietnamese Coffee) were just fine. * * * The innovative stuff is mostly very good. I had a first rate Hu Tieu Ap Chao i.e. Fried rice noodles with stuff in them. Not your standard noodle dish. Lightly but interestingly flavored. Seductive noodles. Seductive tofu. I vacuum cleaner-ed mine down in short order. A warm up of lettuce wraps was served both with a ton of spice in the ground chicken and Xmas colored jalapeno rings mixed with the chicken. Not hot enough to cause pain, but spicy enough to get my full and undivided attention. This was my nomination for best dish. My dining partner had shaken beef. To leave the beef thoroughly shaken, they have it watch national news programs in the kitchen. I thought it was a boring sweet dish. My highly knowledgeable tablemate who has had the dish in other places says we were having a superior version. I will defer to the more experienced opinion on this matter. * * * But basically everything we had was good or excellent. The prices were reasonable. Servings were generous. The room was nearly full. Another tasty addition to the many Vietnamese and Chinese restaurants we have here in Austin. The Pho Tai I ordered was everything I expected it to be, but was hoping for more. With that being said, I was still very happy and enjoyed it. The thing that makes Bep Saigon stand out the most in the plethora of Asian restaurants is the cleanliness, interior design, and ambience. It's a very nice restaurant that has very good food that comes with it. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken for my son (of course) which was very fresh and tasty. Bep's also randomly serves Pad Thai (Thai food) which we were pleasantly surprised by. It was also very solid. They have great lunch specials all around with the options they offer as well as pricing. Definitely give them a try if you're around this area. 100% recommend going to this restaurant! The staff is really friendly. Being from Houston I didnt expect much going into it, but once i saw they had banh bot chien (rice cake ) I was eager to try it. My boyfriend ordered the bo luc lac (shaken beef) and I ordered bun bo hue (spicy noodle soup) and the flavor of both was very tasty and authentic. I ordered the lunch special which came with your choice of Chinese dish, egg roll, soup, and rice. It was about $12.99 for a really hearty meal that didn't leave me feeling too stuffed and weighed down. It was just the right amount of food. The egg drop soup was nice balance of smooth soupy base and soft egg whites. It was served not too hot so perfect for eating right away and I finished it fast The pork and veggie egg roll was delicious, perfectly crisp on the outside with soft crunchy vegetables and bits of pork inside. I could eat ten more of these. The kung pao chicken come in a biggggg portion. I didn't end up eating the rice and it was still a hefty meal. The bamboo was nice and crisp like the texture of a savory apple. The chicken was cooked well, nice and juicy. Combined with the peanuts and cashews for a crunch all the textures were nice. I liked the combination of the bell peppers too but those were sparse. It was supposed to be spicy but it wasn't really spicy. As a person who doesn't handle spice well, this wasn't spicy to me at all. The sauce was really good though despite not being spicy. Not overly heavy or greasy. My friend ordered bun bo bowl and the meat was delectable and tender. It came in a generous proportion of crisp noodles, lettuce, carrots, and cucumbers drizzles in a light savory sauce. This place exceeded my expectations and more! I am usually skeptical of restaurants trying to do too many varieties of Asian cuisine, but everything we tried here was delicious. They're currently in their soft opening, but the service and food was spot on. The host was very patient with us and took the time to explain the menu and specials as well as some recommendations. We ordered the yellow curry in a clay pot, hu tieu ap chao (pan fried rice cakes), vermicelli bowl with grilled pork, and general tso chicken. Everything was well seasoned, generous portions including the protein, and well cooked. My favorite dish was the hu tieu ap chao with beef -this is unlike anything I've ever eaten before which is partly why I loved it so much. It's a nice combo of meat, veggies, and the crispy rice cakes add the perfect amount of texture. Totally recommending this place to all our friends! I would say though this is still a mostly Vietnamese place. We tried: - Bo Luc Lac (Shaken Steak): this was great! They don't usually have this at too many places, so was excited to try it out and was not disappointed. They served it with lemon pepper sauce on the side for some reason... definitely don't need that - Lemon Pepper Chicken: Soooo I did not realize this was breaded and fried which is not great for my gestational diabetes, but loved the crispiness and the flavor. - Mi Kho: friend got this, which was dry noodles with sauce on the side, and he couldn't figure out how to eat it... but apparently just dumping all the sauces in did the trick and according to him it was delicious :) - Moo Goo Gai Pan: This was off of the lunch menu, which also includes soup, steamed rice, and egg roll. The portion size was pretty big and it's priced quite reasonably. There are so many other things on the menu, and we also regretted not looking at the specials menu on the chalkboard, which had a few other hard to find dishes we would have wanted to try. Ordered a dinner combo (beef and broccoli) online a couple of days ago for takeout about 45 minutes later. Within a couple of minutes I got a text message that the food was ready. I suspected something might be off and I was right. The food turned out to be awful; bad enough for me to write a review which I rarely ever do. It was stale, totally unappetizing (with large chunks of tough beef floating in a watery brown sauce with barely-cooked broccoli) and seemed like it had been prepared by someone who didn't know how to make it. Apparently it also had been sitting around for sometime and needed to be pawned off on an unsuspecting customer who wouldn't be eating it in the restaurant to immediately complain. My experience could very well have been a one-off, but this has happened several times at other eating places in the recent past to make me think that the practice of treating people like me (who order takeout food) with disdain is becoming common. I have no reason to continue patronizing such businesses and won't be returning to them, starting with this one. read more

As usual, before I decide on a place to go out to, I look through the yelp site to see what's new and good. This place caught my eye and they actually had dining accommodations during this covid time. They are located right next-door to P Terry's and Johnny Carino's on the I 35 Access Rd. Many of the reviews recommended the salt and pepper calamari which we ordered and found it to be excellent as well. The wife had the happy family and I had the spicy Hunan beef. I also got the hot and sour soup and fried rolls. My spicy Hunan dish was not as spicy as I would've thought, but it was very good nonetheless. They do have a drink list but, there are no alcoholic beverages served at this place. The meal would've been complete if I could've had a nice crisp Asian lager to wash it down with. Especially since the food comes right to your table from the kitchen nice and hot. We had great service and got out of there for just $55 which included a generous tip. I didn't bother to take any pictures of the food since there are already so many available. We definitely recommend this place. read more
