I miss the old spot, Juban, that was here for so many years. Very little variety on Beque's menu for what you would usually find at Korean BBQ/yakiniku spots. 1) no filet mignon and very little high-end meats in general 2) seriously....no vegetables?? The only option was lettuce. That's right, lettuce. No onion, no mushroom, no zucchini, no corn. Nada. 3) the sides are terrible. Disgusting tofu strips, glass noodle with pea shoots, sprouts and soy-sauce covered Romaine lettuce. Note, this is in addition to the giant pile of green leaf lettuce they already give you... The meat sticks to the grill because the grill plates aren't cured. You lose tasty morsels to the plate! Which brings me to my next complaint: why they constantly changed out the grill plate. Countless times I've cooked on other grill plates that are cured and we've never had to pause our grilling for the staff to bring us a new one. This happened 4x during our meal and that meant chunks of meat disappeared with the plate! And then there is the fact that they put all the different types of meat on one platters, divided by more damn lettuce of course! Except they didn't tell us which was the two different beefs and also they put marinated chicken with the spicy beef....uh rule 101 of food safety, chicken needs to be separated!! I didn't catch it right away because I wasn't the person in my group cooking and I wasn't close to the platters. The marinades made them look the same, my group started to pull meat off the plate and didn't realize it until I pointed out they'd not cooked it long enough and it was chicken. The place is clean, new, the staff is efficient,but none of that circumvents that otherwise so-so offering from Beque. And seriously, don't serve chicken or pork next to beef! I've been to a la carte korean BBQ places, where it costs $60-$80 per person, and I've been to Beque for lunch, where it costs $20/person (w/ tax and tip). While I would say that I had more sides, and the meat was more tender at the $60-$80 places, I just have a hard time justifying the price difference. I thought the white rice, kimchi, fish cake, rice paper, sprouts, and green salad were ample sides to break up all of the meat that we were consuming. The meet was all quite tasty, and we had about 6 portions between the two of us. This is certainly a place that I'd go back to. read more

Finally another decent KBBQ place to select in Japantown besides YakiniQ! Made a reservation on the phone for two and surprisingly, the nice Korean lady took our reservation! On the day of arrival, my SO and I got off work a little earlier than expected so we asked the server if we may sit down now. He sat us down with no fuss. I also told the lady there (looked like the owner) that I am the person that's supposed to arrive later for two but I am here now. During the whole dinner, she remembered my name and kept checking up on us. So nice :) The food was amazingly flavorful! Huge portions as well. My favorite would definitely be the Kalbi. Although it's an add-on for $8, it came with 7 FAT and full of flavor strips. I loved the House Marinated Pork as well. One thing I love about Beque over YakiniQ is that lettuce is included with the AYCE! We can finally pretend to be one of those fancy Koreans in kdramas eating delicious meats in lettuce wraps haha! Service was quick and friendly. One thing I would need to DING them on is that drink refills took a long time. The restaurant wasn't full but my SO had his ice water cup empty twice during our dinner for at least 15 minutes each before we had to flag a server down for water. I've been here twice and haven't been disappointed, food portion is actually too much for the price so only thing I'm complaining is that they need to reduce (just a little tho). I happen to see this place on the Japanese newspaper and I wanted to see what this new Korean BBQ was about. There's YakiniQ that in normally go to when I'm in Japantown but wanted to try something new. We came on a Saturday night and I had a feeling it would be packed so I made reservations just in case for 8:30 for my boyfriend and I. We got there maybe 10 minutes past 8:30 and we waited about another 10 or 15 minutes till we got seated. It's in the mall where Kinokuniya bookstore is located. Parking at night is a hassle tho but if you want free parking, go for street. If you're a rich ass then I suggest parking in the garage lol. Anyways, we got seated and it took a while for the server to get our order. They look very understaffed but anyways we ordered all you can eat. Pricing is somewhat cheaper than most Korean BBQ but the menu is limited. There's some stuff you can order off the menu that's not included with the AYCE. We ordered the regular bugolgi, spicy bugolgi, and spicy pork belly. The meats were okay. Nothing special tbh. It came out on a big plate and they give you so much meat!!!!! Like in one sitting you'd probably be full if it's only for two people. We didn't even get to try out other stuff bc we ordered those three meats, seafood tofu soup and the sides. I was hoping they would have more sides like most Korean BBQ place like mashed potatoes, more veggies etc but very limited at this place. We also ordered peach soju which I mostly drank since my bf doesn't drink that much lol. On the menu it shows they got different flavors but don't be fooled! They only got passion fruit, peach, yogurt and one more I think?? I was hoping they'd have watermelon but they said the menu was old...what a bummer. A friend of ours was going to move away from SF in a few weeks so we decided to gather the old high school cavalries who could make it to enjoy the evening together. One of my friends requested to try here since it's a new kbbq spot. We booked a table for 10 and was able to get it the next day. The main entrance of the restaurant is actually located inside the Japantown mall on the western ground level side (near the manga store). When we went in at 6pm, the restaurant was not relatively full yet. There were only maybe 2 tables that were occupied. The staff led us to our table with the reserved marker. The menu we were looking at on the table wasn't too big. It was actually a very simple menu. We tried everything on the AYCE except squid and rice. It was saddening to learn that the briskets were "addons" that had a one time charge of $5. Those were one of our favs. I think we only add a few plates of briskets and it ran out.. I felt like the meat quality was just average. I bit into many pieces of pork with a lot of chewy fat in it. Some of us felt like the marination on the meat might have been a tad bit salty but it didn't really bother us that much. I liked the bulgogis and spicy chicken the most though. To end the night, we ordered passion fruit, mango, and strawberry bottled sojus. The service was so-so. It got a lot slower as the night progressed since tables were getting filled. 22.99 dinner for AYCE. Mostly meat. Most tasty is the ribeye. Garlic pork. Bbq chicken. Pork belly. 4 choices first. I liked that these 4 meats in one dish. All very tasty. They changed the grill 3 times. Pour sesame oil to keep less sticky. Shrimp was super fresh. 5 pieces total per dish. Squid was the big kind, big tentacles. So crunchy and fresh. They gave us scissors, very helpful to cut up big pieces of meat. Skip the brisket, so tough. We each got a bowl of rice. 5 bancha: kimchi (excellent, not too spicy), fish cake, jap chee, clear flat rice noodle (used it on the grill to soften it up, be sure to add oil), bean sprouts. They give you big leafy veggie (i assume to wrap the meat). Fondue is really a cupcake size of cheese to be melted and to dip. The other table shared a whole container of soju for $39. I asked for pineapple sauce. So full. Feel bad we had to waste food. We ate as much as we could. Great service but Weds night was empty. read more

Finally decided to check this place out last week. I love KBBQ and Japantown has a few places that offer cook-it-yourself Korean bbq. Beque is the newest in this lineup. Since we went late, we didn't have to wait long. We were seated right away and picked our first three meats to cook and chow down. They give you A LOT. Cooking it yourself is fun but remember that you will smell so wear clothes you don't mind smelling like delicious BBQ later. There is an unlimited menu that you can cook yourself as well as single serving options that requires no work on your end. We did the unlimited route and were not disappointed in the overall quality of meats that were given. As with all Korean places, they also offer a wide variety of side dishes (banchan) and rice. I saw this while walking down in Jtown and thought great! A new AYCE spot where the line isn't as long as Carbon or Yakini. Now I wish I waited in line at Yakini or Carbon. The choices of meats are very limited. I wish they had galbi, pork neck and intestines. They had none of that. Service seems to be a bit slower than the other two restaurants I've mentioned as well. And Yakini is not even that great There is a reason why Carbon and Yakini are always packed. Service is on point and they have more variety. The seating was a little weird (space between sofas and table was too much - maybe they expected our bellies to enlarge quite a bit during the mean) The highlight was definitely the Soju/Mango Soju. We got like a hundred bottles of soju and that turnt the party. Our table was also secluded enough that we didn't feel like a nuisance to the other guests. (although Im sure we were!) Conveniently located, open late, affordable, still feels like the place just opened and the staff is figuring out how to work together and make most of the place. The meats and dishes are fairly average, nothing of what we tried could have been considered exceptional. This is frankly not atypical of the other restaurants at the mall in Japan Town, they're passable but would never be the n.1 option if the lines at the better places weren't so long. Service was OK: the server forgot two of the dishes we ordered on separate occasions, also initially told us they had a type of meat they ended up not offering. There were only 2-3 tables worth of patrons at the time in the restaurant, so it wasn't even a matter of them being too overwhelmed to remember each customer's order. I was looking around for a place to take my parents tonight for korean food and was pleasantly surprised to find this joint in sf! The portions are kind of unusual here. The meats come with big portions while shrimp u only get like three. I do notice the grills get charred up pretty quickly here compare to other bbq grills. Happy there's a another AYCE KBBQ place in this neighborhood other than YaqiniQ. The basic lunch menu price is very reasonable. I was immensely satisfied when they brought raw pork belly strips for us to cook to eat rather than bringing them out already, fully cooked like how most SF KBBQ places serve pork belly. Pork belly is my favorite from the meat-menu here. I didn't like the other type of meats on the menu except the brisket; however, you have to pay extra for the brisket and I don't think the brisket is worth the extra $$. The ban chans were yummy & the many, different variety of sauces to dip your meat in were yummy as well. This restaurant is very understaffed. This place is absolutely terrible. They are insanitary with their meat and food handling and the meat quality isn't very good. I clearly saw them taking meat that had been sitting on a table for a long time back to the kitchen and reserving it to another table. The prices are pretty high considering there's a more competitive kbbq place right on the corner. Not only that the side dishes look old, soggy, and disgusting. It's a smallish KBBQ place tucked into a corner on the bottom floor in Japantown. It's a nice alternative to YakiniQ across the street from Japan Peace Plaza. My friend and I came here for a late lunch/early dinner, and it was pretty empty since it was only about 5:00PM on a Friday. We got to order a lot of meat. Particularly, we really liked the pork belly, brisket, and bulgogi. Although we couldn't take back home any of meat, we were allowed to take other foods, such as the kimchi pancakes in a takeout box. When we took a look at the menu we noticed that brisket & short ribs were add-ons.. we were a little bummed the we had to pay $3 for every order of brisket because WE LOVE BRISKET! So we went ahead and just got 1 order of brisket, short ribs, spicy pork, and pork belly.. everything was delicious!! My mouth is literally watering as i type this lol. This was my first time having Korean bbq and it was fantastic! I loooooved the beef (so flavorful and juicy). We got the drink tower thing (soju) which comes in a ton of flavors (we had them combine strawberry + mango) and it was delicious! Definitely come with a huge appetite though if you want to get your moneys worth of the all you can eat ($22 per person). The service wasn't incredible but they were nice enough and you're cooking the stuff on your own anyways so it's fine. I had a late night KBBQ craving and don't wat to wait for long lines. We stumbled upon this place in Japantown mall. Why not give it a shot, right? It wasn't busy at all. Service was quick and they give you tons of meat. We were not able to finish everything. And unfortunately we can't cook up our left overs and bring it to go :( so we decided to offer it to the table next to us but they said they are on the same situation as well in leftovers. It's been quite a while so not sure if that changed but if not, then they should start doing it. I came here last week and all I have to say is DON'T go here. If I could give it negative stars, I would but unfortunately I can't. I checked the yelp reviews to see if other people had the same issues as me and they do, and it was regarding how the meat was COMPLETELY FROZEN. I love brisket and brisket is usually the safe choice for KBBQ but each time it came out it was frozen and when it was cooked, you can tell it was low quality meat because of the way the meat turned significantly dark brown. It didn't taste good whatsoever. I felt like I had to keep eating just to get my money's worth but I had to stop after the second round of meat because we started feeling so sick. The service was also trash. No one checked in on my table to ask if we needed anything or if we wanted to order anything else, we had to flag them down even though it looked like they were ignoring us. It's not worth the $25.99 to eat frozen meat with bottom tier side dishes and service. Save your money and go somewhere else that won't make you feel sick after because my table and I felt so sick after eating at this place. It's not worth it. DON'T go here. I like this place. They could add a few meats but i get it. It seems they spcialize in bulgogi since they have 3 types. The Kalbi is an extra 8 bucks BUT they give you 6-7 big pieces. They have a cool looking beer / soju tower that seems great for suburbs (whence they came from) or college kids. Thats 20 some bucks and looks worth it. The AYCE includes rice and some basics that are extra at YakiniQ. They have decent seafood selections (squid, shrimp, etc) If you're a bulgogi fan this place is pretty good. If you know your korean bbq and like things like beef tongue, pork neck, pork cheek, intestine, etc then somewhere else maybe your jam. Here's why: - Quite a stingy list of protein menu. - Charges extra for many other items including brisket, tofu soup, and rice (These items often come as complimentary in other KBBQ places). - Subpar meat quality. - Salad was way too salty. - Certain items that we ordered (jap chae and salad) just came us small side dishes and that was quite confusing. It's great to find a good all you can eat (AYCE) korean bbq place. We went late (10pm) on a Friday night since they are open till midnight. The service was great and the staff was very friendly and attentive. The sides were very nice as well, we especially liked the bean sprouts and japchae. The ambiance is a little dated, and the location is set inside a strip mall. That's not necessarily a negative, but just something of which to be aware. The meat was very good. I had the ribeye bulgogi which was very nice, and the spicy pork which was awesome. I filled up on just one round, so no room to try the others. My wife had the bbq chicken which she enjoyed as well. We would definitely come back, especially to try the galbi (which I didn't this time because it was an extra $8). Important Note: Beware street parking! Especially late at night. There was plenty of street parking, but when we came back we saw that the car in front of us had it's window smashed and been broken into. After going over 15 years without a trip to Japan Town, our trip to Beque was the second in three weeks. And our second Korean place in the same length of time. But as opposed to the prior, this restaurant has you cook your own food... and this is where the appeal may be something of an acquired taste. (If I want to cook my own food, I'll go to a store, pick the ingredients, pick the time I want to prepare, etc). Certainly that's not what I have in mind when going to a place that requires reservations. But whatever... if it makes others happy, Sheryl Crow will sing about it, you know? The various meats and vegetables that came our way were decent enough, but it was weird that we had a hard time communicating with our server that it would be a good idea to have an onion to serve as oil for our grill. Or some sort of cooking spray... I'm not suggesting an appearance by Pam was necessary, but staff should pick up on that. Oh, and there were television screens. Not sports or politics or even soap operas, but an endless array of Korean pop videos, where it's apparently a requirement that each and every offering features the singers aligned pyramid-style. Made reservations for a party of 8. Although we were running 10min late due to traffic, the staff at Beque BBQ were extremely friendly and had saved our table. Although the entire restaurant was filled to capacity, it never felt cramped due to the size of the restaurant. We did all you can eat with three towers (two cocktail towers and one beer tower). The mango tower was my favorite, although I would suggest asking to lower the sweetness a little. In addition, the staff was extremely friendly even though it was pretty much crazy busy at all times. They were very aware of the grills, changing them whenever was necessary. Also they were very personable and joined in on some of our table's jokes. Overall, the entire experience actually reminded me of something similar to LA's Korean BBQ scene. We will be back. read more

Legit marinated meat and ban chan (side dishes!), including the rare lettuce allowing you to eat Korean style (take your large lettuce leaf, plop some rice on it, add your sizzling meat, and a dollop of gochuzan- that spicy red paste- and wrap it up to scarf down!). All the pieces were authentically marinated and we never got slabs of fat. Often buffets have low quality slabs of meat filled with mostly fat, but here they have all meat! I came opening weekend and the staff have this whole process down pat. I never saw any server panic or be unsure of anything. In fact, they were quite sassy and fun! True seasoned pros here. Now with a liquor license, and with huge booths for large groups, and TVs tuned into k pop music videos, this all you can eat BBQ restaurant is one to come back for! It's affordable, easy to find, and well ventilated (I didn't come out smelling like meat!). FYI- this place is good for vegetarians too!!
