There's so much to love about Bergen Bagels. Excellent coffee, huge, freshly-made bagels that make whopping sandwiches good cold and hot. That said, bear in mind that Bergen is, as the name makes clear, a bagel joint. Don't go there for a burger or a panini or a wrap. Steer clear of the knishes and beef patties. While they seem to offer the range of a full-service NY deli, the quality of their non-bagel offerings is not what one would expect in a similar establishment. Oh yeah, and they don't make french fries. Stick with those huge crusty bagels with great slabs of Boar's Head or cream cheese and you're golden. read more

I've been going to Bergen since 2003 when I moved to the neighborhood for school. I've been getting delivery bagels on hungover mornings for almost 10 years. Occasionally I would pop in to the store and maybe eat at a tiny table. The old location had a really nice vibe. I remember when they painted photorealistic bagels onto the wall and thought to myself "wow this is a really nice touch." It was always the same 5 or 6 people working the line. When I would place an order on the phone the same guy would always pick up and slightly prod me for only ordering one bagel - "Just for yourself again, eh?" he'd say. Well, fast forward to "the big move" and things aren't at all the same. In the old location near the end they installed a big TV (like Castros - someone is telling these places that TVs add to the ambiance...) that played New York Times headlines peppered with horoscopes, something like a small TV you'd see in an elevator in an office building in Midtown. Although this was not that bad, it was definitely foreshadowing the upcoming demise. On busy weekend mornings the old store was crammed with cops, bewildered freshman wearing combat boots, construction workers, and friendly people of the neighborhood. Now the only people willing to put up with the tragedy that is "the new Bergen" are the freshman wearing combat boots. They might also be the ones working behind the counter as well. The new location looks like it was designed by someone that specializes in suburban mall food courts. Honestly, if you took away all the logos it could secretly be a Panda Express. You walk into this cavernous space into a perpendicular line. The organization of the space is like a car crash frozen in time forever. After waiting in a line with a 6 foot tall glass embankmet shielding your face from the employees, you are greeted with a rotating cast of characters -apparently most of the old employees have either left or are hiding away where they don't have to see the fiasco that is the ordering line. The drinks are far away on the wall after you get to the lonely single cash register. The menus are on huge flat screen TVs with unreadable fonts. None of the employees know what they're doing, and there's a ton of them. The bagels are fine like last time, but there's no way I'd eat at this semi-futuristic tomb. I'd say get delivery, but it could potentially be an hour and a half. I'm not really "nostalgic for an earlier time", it's simply depressing to see a great neighborhood gathering place turn into a Panda Express. read more

I went to Pratt years ago and this was my favorite place to eat. After pulling an all nighter, you could head here before class and get a breakfast special bagel + coffee for less than $4. Years ago they moved to a new location just a little ways down the block, and pretty much since everything's gone down hill. By the afternoon, there are never any everything bagels in stock. Do New Yorkers not enjoy whole wheat everything bagels anymore that a bagel store feels no need for them? Anyway, they skimp on the cream cheese and the quality of everything seems to have gone down in general, along with raised prices. I do have to say that all the employees I've interacted with in the store are nothing but kind, but for the Clinton Hill locals that remember the old Bergen next to Associated before the TD bank days, don't expect the same fair priced delicious bagels loaded with cc you remember. read more

Went here for a bacon egg and cheese breakfast bagel. It was delicious and filling. My only problem with this place was the service. It was slow for a to-go breakfast place and there was only 2 people in front of us. Also, my roommate and I had to repeat our orders 4x because the guy could not remember it. Other than that the food was good but I'm going to check out so more breakfast places. I'm not entirely sold on Bergen Bagels just yet. read more

Bergen is my go-to breakfast delivery and I usually end up ordering once a week. Great variety of cream cheeses and bagels. Check out the sun-dried tomato tofu cream cheese - delicious! I've had the coffee delivered a few times and it's usually fairly well contained but occasionally leaks into the bag. Main complaint is that delivery instructions are never followed - I always note to call when they get to my apartment so they're not ringing the doorbell and waking my roommates, but they only call maybe a third of the time. read more

Yummy yummy muffins.....and bagels too. I frequent this place because I'm often in the area....and the food is delicious. The coffee is kinda blah, and service isn't anything to write home about. They've messed up my order on several occasions, but nothing is ever really bad so I'm usually not upset with the mistakes. Not really a place for a hot date - seating is limited, crammed, and awkward...I suggest this place as a meal-on-the-go. Now for the best kept little secret (okay it's not really a secret, but I still know a ton of people who go here all the time and somehow don't know this).... from 8-9pm all of there bagels and muffins are 1/2 price. The bagels are fantastic, service is pretty quick, especially for how busy they are. Not to say there won't be a long line when you get there, but what can I say, they are BUSY! We order delivery on weekend mornings, they never get our order wrong, and sometimes...if we're lucky...the bagels are still fresh from the oven and warm! I'm never moving to the suburbs. I particularly like this place because they made me a bagel sandwich that was not on the menu. I used to work at a bagel cafe and my usual was a veggie sandwich with cream cheese. My request threw them off at first, but they were cool and only charged me $2.50! Also, all the workers and servers were Mexican - like me! Sometimes the guys seem to actually understand my order, put it all together correctly, i get out of there within a respectable amount of time, and the bagel is actually what i asked for and tastes great. JUST AWFUL!. Bergen Bagels has good food, great bagels and yummy cream cheese. There services is ridiculously unprofessional and rude. I am a "usual" at the one on Myrle Ave. Walk in, only person in line save two women getting one salad prepared. 6 people behind the counter. Wait 2 minutes, 3 minutes, continue to wait. Finally, when someone else comes in, they decide to service the line (apparently, it was ok for me to stand there). They then help the woman behind me. When I explain to them how rude what they did was, the response it "it's ok". No, it isn't. I walked out. The bagels are pretty awesome and I love their large selection of cream cheese but no joke, this place has to have the worst coffee I've ever had in my life. Its sour, tastes like stagnant swamp water smells, and has the aftertaste of what I imagine to be a dirty dishtowel. I cannot for the life of me understand how people order coffee as they stand in line in front of me. Whenever I get bagels from Bergen, I will go out of my way to then get coffee at another place like Khim's or Starbucks at Pratt. Sadly after 15 years of business almost every weekend it's time to go somewhere else. 90 minutes for delivery is unacceptable. 3 calls and not so much as an 'I'm sorry' let alone consideration on the bill. HORRIBLE SERVICE. They couldn't get my order correct, my partners order or the girl behind me. I read a review that someone said the East Indian guy can never get an order right, totally accurate. He's a fvcking moron. Couldn't even get the charges right for my boyfriend and I's order. I wonder how much money they could be losing. Other winning moments included one of the salespeople telling a customer that "he's busy right now, but it's okay" to give him her order. Really starting to not like this place. The food is good, the service sucks! Most of the time I go after 4pm & I get terrible service! The employees are really slow, rude & argumentative. The panini machine is always off. I go at 9pm, it's off, I went @ 5:45pm & it was off. The only time I get good service is in the early afternoon when the morning shift is there. After reading several reviews before deciding to check this place out, I should have really expected that the service would not be great. But still I found myself having I repeat my order many times and not understanding the cashier as she tried to ring up my total, to my annoyance. Worst service ever! I ordered before 9am this morning and was told my delivery would be at my house within 45 minutes. Over an hour and a half later, my food arrives minus my iced black coffee (which I paid for). I have been waiting for 35 minutes for them to return my money for something they did not deliver. They have zero customer service skills and when bagels arrive that late, they are gross! I will never ever order from this place again. Terrible! I would give zero stars if I could. read more

My girlfriend and I came here on our way out of the city and were very pleased with our choices. Great bagels and great cream cheese, and the coffee wasn't bad either. No issues with the service-- it was a little slow for how not-busy the place was, but nothing worth complaining about; we were in and out in under 15 minutes with a great breakfast to take on the road. read more

They have decent bagels and they definitely hook it up with the toppings (read: It winds up being as thick as a sandwich from a restaraunt), but in terms of price, if you're just getting a spread the prices are really high. I like this place mainly because of their selection of cream cheeses my favorite is the apple cinnamon/apple spice it taste just like an apple pie. So we walk in around 4:30pm on a Saturday. There's one customer who just paid for his order and that's all. It's quiet, which is nice for a bagel shop. I ask for 2 bagels - just bagels, no cream cheese, no sandos, just throw an egg bagel and an everything bagel into a bag. And..they get the order wrong. HOW DO YOU GET THAT WRONG?? We avoid going to the Bergen Bagels on Fulton because they always get something wrong with our order (we've taken to writing our order down and handing it to them). Consistently good bagels. Perfect level of chewiness, not too dense. Every flavor I've tried has been well-executed, and the everything has the absolute ideal balance of all the seasonings. We are also big fans of the muffins, which are huge (usually we split them between two people) and delicious - and I am not typically a muffin fan. I would recommend the orange cranberry and the lemon poppy. We've periodically gotten the packs of little black and white cookies, as well, and every time we have served them they have always been a huge hit. They are very good. read more

These are the best bagels in New York. They are generous in size but not the overblown 550 calorie monsters like Pik-a-Bagel's. Particularly good are the pumpernickel and pumpernickel/wheat. Utopia Bagels in Queens are very good. These are better. read more
