I honestly don't know how they have so many good reviews. When you spend 8k for a garage it shouldn't be a painful process, too many other good companies out there.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that my materials cost alone was all at least 4x what they go for online. I got completely scammed by these guys & the worker was super arrogant from the start (first red flag). After he left, he posted a "service/repair" number by the clicker for future problems. Wasn't even the same company he was working for (this one). I got completely scammed & at the end of the day, that's my fault. But here I am sharing the story, save yourself the trouble and look elsewhere for garage work. Hoping this doesn't happen to any other honest, hard working people! About six years ago, the springs on my two-car garage broke. If you've ever had this happen, you know exactly what it sounds like--and you don't forget it. At the time, it surprised me because we were only five years into a newer, cookie-cutter home in Irvine. Jonathan, the owner of First Garage Door and Gates, explained that I have a very heavy door, which likely caused the failure. They were great to work with: professional, quick, and honest. Jonathan personally came out, assessed the issue, gave me a quote, and his tech completed the repair. It was a tough job, and the total cost was $795. I left them a glowing review. Fast forward to now--same issue. The garage springs broke again. Naturally, I called Jonathan, and he sent a tech named Danny out the next day. Danny was polite and quiet. When I asked how much the repair would cost, he said he needed to measure the springs first. He also started emphasizing that this was a "very heavy" and "custom" door, even throwing out a comment about the door being worth $15-20k. That immediately felt odd, considering every neighbor in my tract has a similar door. I reminded him that his company replaced these springs years ago. I stepped back inside, and when I returned about 15 minutes later, he was already working on the springs. That caught me off guard--I had asked for a quote upfront--but I trusted the company. I was a repeat customer, and they had treated me fairly in the past. About two hours later, Danny finished and told me the door would last for years. He mentioned installing heavy-duty "custom" springs and said he just happened to have them on his truck for another job later that week. When I asked for the price, he again said he needed to measure and calculate. Then came the shock: $3,400. I was floored. I told him I paid a fraction of that for the same job with the same company six years ago. He said he was just an hourly employee and that the owner sets pricing. I immediately called Jonathan, who said he'd talk to Danny to see if he could get me a discount. A few minutes later, Danny tells me, "The boss approved $2,000." Clearly Danny was the one setting the price. I'm guessing is just given a floor price to work with that is set by Jonathan. That raised even more red flags. How does a price drop by nearly half in minutes? I told him this should have been quoted upfront and that $2,000 was still excessive. When I questioned the "hourly employee" claim, he admitted he works on commission. I paid the $2,000, but I wasn't happy about it. And not the price at this point, just the principle. The door is the same door. The springs were "heavy duty" last time too. Calling them "custom" doesn't justify the markup--especially when they're already sitting in the truck. Anyone can Google the actual cost of these springs. I think their thoughts are "lets call it custom" and that justifies the quote. Jonathan called me afterward and apologized extensively. We spoke for about 30 minutes. He agreed that dropping from $3,400 to $2,000 made no sense and even asked me not to post this review. I told him it wasn't personal--I believe he's honest--but the commission-based model encourages upselling. He also mentioned that Danny isn't licensed and works under his license, which is concerning given how dangerous garage springs can be under that high tension. After I confirmed I was still leaving a review, Jonathan reviewed my old invoice and claimed the previous work didn't include spring replacement. I disagreed--when you've only had garage work done once, you remember what was replaced. I'm giving 3 stars instead of 1 because I do believe the owner himself does honest work. But the experience feels like luck of the draw depending on who shows up. My advice is, get a written estimate before work starts--no exceptions. I learned my lesson the hard way. And if you have a nice car in your garage, consider moving it out so no assumptions are made about what you can afford.

I checked their Yelp reviews and saw they were a family-owned business, so I decided to go with them. When I called just before 2pm, I was told a technician could come out within the next 2 hours, which was great (but that also told me they weren't busy). The technician arrived just before 4pm. However, he was only here for a grand total of 15 mins. He opened and closed the garage door and said it was in good condition. He then tightened all the hinges, put lube on the door opener track (asking me for a ladder to do so) and then told ME to put WD-40 on the side rails and wheels. I would have thought that would be part of the maintenance service but he said he was out of WD-40. So now I have to go to the store, buy some WD-40 and lubricate the door myself! So I spent $79 for 15 mins of someone's time and a very small tube of grease. Not quite what I was expecting.

When the technician arrived, he said I needed to service my gate every couple of years "just like your car". They'd look at the motor, the gears, the belts, etc. I agreed to $275. Then, he tried to open the gate manually. He couldn't. He took out a wrench and tightened a bolt. Then his 'service' was opening the gate box, opening and closing the gate a couple times and saying 'it's great'. I protested and agreed to pay $225 but the experience wasn't great. BUT, then I spoke to the boss and he was wonderful. He refunded my money and explained that this is not how they do business and that he built the company with his hands and his heart. He seems like a great guy. I probably should have called him while his technician was there to clear things up. I use yelp all the time. These reviews are so important. The lesson is: speak to the owner.

My bad experience with Besser Bros continues. Last time they made a mistake the owner Byron contacted me and made everything right. But once again, I had a really bad experience with the team at Besser Bros. When the rep came out earlier this year, he told me to call them back out before my 1 year warranty is up for the 1 year maintenance. My rep for the homebuilder also told me the same thing. My new rep confirmed with the old rep of the 1 year maintenance before before sending in the work order. After weeks passed I did not receive a call from Besser to schedule. So I called earlier this week and they said they would call me back to reschedule the next day. A few days passed so I called back today and they told me it is not covered under warrant my. I spoke to 3 ladies there and one of the supervisors was very rude. They sent this up the chain to Byron and he will not follow through on what his employee told me and the prior homebuilder rep. They want to charge me to come out for my 1 year maintenance. No thank you. read more

If you are shopping CUSTOMER SERVICE, please go not further. I was totally astounded with their immediate response and care of my garage door replacement. I had Paul Maltzberger come out on Wednesday to not only take dimensions, but to inform me of the various doors to make an informed decision. That very evening, Jessica whom I talked to during the day text me asking if then next morning would be OK....!!! She was so concerned about getting the door from the warehouse to my home...Well, the installer Chris showed up, installed the door and was finished in 2 hours. (taking the order, ordering the door, and installing) takes trained employees who "care" about the client. Our garage opener started to open and close on its own due to a neighbor being on the same frequency. Not a hard fix but the level of service we received from Paul Maltzberger was above and beyond. He called ahead and texted to give us a heads up upon arrival, was on time and not only did he fix the problem at hand, he programmed the built in garage openers in both of our cars and then took the time to educate me on the fact that our particular opener had a battery backup and how to use and maintain it if the power goes out (we didn't even know it had a battery backup! :)) His 30+ years of customer service really shows through. Will be calling Besser Bros as well as Paul again, if/when we need them. Excellent service all around! read more

After I contacted them, Julian Romero came out and evaluated our problem, gave us an estimate and said he would return in a few days to complete the needed repairs. Upon his return, he got to work immediately. You could tell he had a lot of experience repairing garage door repairs, very professional, efficient. I normally love to support small businesses. But Besser Bros has the WORST customer service. After almost 2 weeks of unanswered questions, rude employees not returning phone calls, and them demanding we buy parts that we inquired about, my husband wrote a very professional email to Byron, the owner. He ended up calling us, but in a very aggressive, argumentative, and childish manner. Needless to say, he refused to accept accountability for his employee's behavior. We had a broken spring on our 3-year old garage door. I called Besser and thy actually answered the phone (others had a voicemail). They setup an appointment to work with my schedule. The morning of the appointment I received an email with the name and picture of the service technician. Bob arrived on time and ready to work with an amazing attitude. I had an issue with my garage door and booked an appointment online the night before. The appointment was originally scheduled for the afternoon, but I received a call in the morning and they were able to come earlier and fix it, which was very convenient. As for the cost, it seemed fair, and while Devin pointed out a few parts that may need replacement in the future, it never felt like he was trying to upsell me. My garage door spring broke last night. I called Besser Bros. this morning at 8:30 and spoke with Larry. I was told that Julion would be at my house between 8:30 and 10:00. He showed up at 9:15. He was polite, professional and extremely knowledgeable. He made the repairs, explained thoroughly what was needed to be done and did great work. He completed all work in a timely manner. When I called to get an updated ETA they rescheduled to later but never showed no text or call as I was promised. I called them and they said that there is no waraty on labor and only 1 month waranty on parts, but in the invoce they put 1 year waranty. Asked me to try to move the sensors around to fix it. I spent 2 hours before I alligned them. Again after a few days I had same problem, and when I reach this business I get the same response. Basically they want to extarct money from me again to visit and fix the work which they did within the last 2 months. Now I have a garage that wont close, and forced to look for another service on Yelp to fix this.
